Actually a GREAT showing....Kudos....Superb...Excellent,,,,Supreme. Thank you Thank you Thank you. I am very impressed. You have an extraordinary talent for using the minimum amount of Straight forward talk to say the Most...Keep doin this in your life....Your stuff is the stuff I would recommend for use in Schools . I appreciate it when a video takes an extra 2 seconds to mention countries besides the USA and Britain. It was a world war after all. Would have been funny though if he sarcastically mentioned Degaul claiming it was France alone that freed France

    • @cgaccount3669
      @cgaccount3669 4 роки тому +4

      @Feldmarschall just because 1 speech is thankful it hardly means he didn't continue to claim france was freed by french. Even french documentaries today make silly claims... like france was the 3rd major at Normandy... no mention of Canada. Speaking of Canada... are you aware he was pelted with tomatoes in Montreal? That he was clueless about French Canada's lack of support in 2 wars. Yet he called for the break up of Canada. don't be like some countries and ignore a bonehead leader based on part of 1 speech

    • @cgaccount3669
      @cgaccount3669 4 роки тому

      @Feldmarschall Watch the the World War 2 video from Indy N... on him. Sorry. I don't have the link. Its actually quite funny. He quotes Chuck... and pauses every part of his speech where you think he's going to praise the allies. But every time he says France instead. The point about Canada was in a very well known speech he called for the break up of Canada. And was pelted with tomatoes later at Expo. In Montreal of all places. France and chuck may acknowledge allies sometimes. But it needs to be everytime. don't trump this issue lol. Picking and choosing statements and ignoring the big picture and how he acted. I do like that he tried to raise the pride of his country and that he fought with the allies. But he could be a lot more diplomatic and spread truth rather than lies.

    • @cgaccount3669
      @cgaccount3669 4 роки тому +1

      @Feldmarschall thanking the allies once or twice. Then pretty much ignoring them the rest of his life. Why do you excuse that? I realize he was trying to restore French pride but it's as ignorant as Americans claiming they won world war 1 and 2 themselves. History needs to be accurate. Anyway I myself should acknowledge De Gaulle was an important and good ally in the war. He resisted the Nazis and represented France well during the worst time in history for that country

    • @wh8787
      @wh8787 4 роки тому +181

      Maybe... I suspect the western allies would have had another go later, plus a failure of operation overlord would presumably allowed the Nazis to send more reinforcements East. I mean, sure, if the western allies had been unable to invade Europe then it would have ultimately ment the Soviets would have had to defeat the Nazis on their own, aside from air raids. It's also not certain how far West the Soviets would have gone, partly because they would have necessarily conquered Germany before they got to the rest of Western Europe, and partly because by the end of the war, the Soviets were running low on man power, it was a brutal conflict and the Soviets bore the brunt of losses, that would have been even worse for them without an allied invasion of Western Europe.

    • @wh8787
      @wh8787 4 роки тому +35

      The other thing to keep in mind is that Stalin had been calling for a major second front in Europe for ages, the Soviets had been bearing the brunt of Nazi aggression. If I had to guess, if Overlord had failed the Soviets would have occupied the whole of Germany and probably Austria too, I don't know that they actually would have occupied anywhere further West, though I suppose they may have ended up going into Scandinavia depending on what happened. I think there's this perception that the Soviets had a basically inexhaustible supply of troops to keep fighting but this isn't really accurate, the Soviets were hitting a serious manpower crisis by the end of the war. Now, do I think they would have lost without Overlord? No, absolutely not, the Soviets would have won but it would have taken longer and been an even bloodier fight in the East than it already was.

    • @Archive41024
      @Archive41024 4 роки тому +17

    If you look at a lot of Churchills suggestions during the war, I kinda get the impression that he knew as soon as America joined it was a victory and they had to think of the future. For example, his idea to invade through the Balkans is a good one, completely messes with Stalin's plans and would have left the West in far better shape during the cold war much earlier on.
    Churchill was that kinda guy, always thinking ahead to future conflicts.

People tent to forget that it was not just the Americans, British, Canadians and free french forces that participated in these operations but polish free forces as well as the french resistance. You are someone who pays attention to detail and that is what makes the difference in a video like this. I hope you continue to make videos as long as you have the time and funds to do so. They are so well researched that I find myself learning more on here than most other documentaries offered today. The wide screen that it uses is also another BIG plus, this makes one of the biggest differences to me on whether or not to continue watching. or to even give it a chance to begin w. 13:33 Operation Epsom a failure? Thanks to the British holding off German counter attacks at Caen, it allowed the Americans free reign of Cherbourg and Brittany without fear of attack, allowing them to force the Germans across the Seine. Caen may not have been captured on day one, but it did deplete and tie up the bulk of German forces which was a success.

    13:40 What gets conventiantly left out here is that whilst the British held up EIGHT panzer divisions the Americans in the west were only fighting half that with four understrength German armoured divisions opposing them as the Germans threw most of their reserves into holding back the British and Commonwealth at Caen. To call it a blunder is almost inane considering the forces opposing them, especially when a German general was dismissed after it was reported he said that with the defeat in Caen and the great amount of armour lost there, the war in france was effectivally over.

    16:00 onwards. You seem to be negating a massive point here. Most probably the primary reason why Cobra was such a success. This being that German forces in the west were all but non-existent. This being due to the constant attacks on Caen, and how it sucked in more and more men and equipment.

      He also grossly over summarises Operation Epsom as a "Blunder". Sure on the face of it it didn't capture Caen nor achieve a huge amount in the way of territorial gains. However the assault petered out because the German's were forced to commit 6 Panzer divisions in order to contain it. This included ALL of their armoured reserves. From this point on nearly all German armoured forces were positioned against the Commonwealth forces. A strategic success in the long game as it was a huge help for operation Cobra.

    I really appreciate the wide inclusion of Operation Dragoon: I feel like that, along with their operation in Alsace-Lorraine, are the pinnacle of an organized French army being a considerable force against the Germans in a war that have often seen them sidelined. Too often are they overlooked. France had a 1.3 million man army by the end of the war, and I love to see their contributions to the allied cause covered more often. Thank you so much.
