The Armchair Historian Hay mate. I just have to say taht your content suprises every time. I especialy adored the animated conversation between Hitler and his generals. Just keep at it. You shoud have a TV channel if I was asked.
The french soldiers trapped in Lille sacrified themselves to buy some time for their british and french friends. We must never forget the ones who were left behind to act as heroes.
I just wrote something similar. Another historical channel showed figurines of historical people and some showed swastikas for Nazi Germany. They were forced to remove the swastikas.
My granddad brother died at this battle to save English soldiers. Everybody laughed at the French surrendered but many people joined the French resistance like my Grandfather. They never gave up the country like the government did...
My grandad was one of the last officers to leave dunkirk, i appreciate what the French did, Never saw my grandad as he died from the affects of mustard gas from WWI that finally got to him.
@@jonny2911 do you think I will leave my country? European Union is a fucking mess and hope many french will vote next year Marine Lepen. UK is also an Islamic country
I only speak German a little, but I loved it. I wondered how good the German accents were. I'd imagine there might be accent differences between those speaking hoch German and the Austrian Hitler.
I spoke to a ww2 veteran a few months before he passed away. He said the french were amazing. They fought until the last bullet to allow the brits the chance to escape. They understood the importance of allowing the brits a chance to escape to regroup and fight again another day, so the french died fighting for that cause and hope. The veteran said he was one of the last men to escape, he escaped on a small paddle boat, he said he can’t describe how petrifying it was to know you were going to get killed if you did not escape. I had so many more questions I wished I had asked him. Unfortunately that time has passed now.
McBizz 9 but they only surrendered after the last Brit left the beach. So, I believe the story of the french were brave and helped the brits escape. Why are you guys so desperate to pull down the french?
65,000 French or more were saved by the Brits plus the British rear guard and German indecision to follow up played the main roles in the expeditionary force escaping.
Also worth noting; The guy who voiced Hitler didn't go for any sort of evocation of the way Hitler sounded in his speeches. Which many do and turn it into a caricature. Good choice on their part.
@@Bluepilled-c5t In their defence, would you really trust someome who broke treaties? I’m not saying the Versallies treaty is ever good. I’m no real Historian but It seems you are leaning to one side based on political ideological belief instead of learning on all sides like a real historian.
I don't even understand why people these days bother to watch TV channels like History channel when you can find way better content online, like these UA-cam videos that clearly has a lot of time and passion invested into them. Truly great documentary videos. Keep it up!
Joel Whitworth Agreed. I know it’s just the troglodytes that tend to scream the loudest about that sort of stuff, and that any person who judges someone else just because of the country they’re from isn’t the kind of person worth having around, but they act like we’re the only country that ever waged wars for profit and colonised land, even though most of Western Europe was on that very same party bus.
@Ricardo Milos we are hated by lots of people just like you, i think the craziest part is how close britain was to joining you germans and how little the germans actually wanted to attack britain, it was literally hanging on the balance, sir oswald mosley a british fascist who supported hitler was going to sieze power but was arrested mere days before he did, with him in power we wouldve joined the germans, wouldve split france and the entire world wouldve likely fell with the german/british army beating anyone who comes at it, the combined air forces and then britains navy.
Europa the Last Battle also has some interesting German accounts of the whole time period. Greatest Story Never Told which was mentioned up above is also a good account.
Media outlets want history to be told by those who can rewrite it for their agenda. Look at the history channel for a prime example, now its all about reality shows and aliens.

Despite our overwhelming numerical superiority, the French counterattack in several points. I cannot understand how these soldiers, sometimes fighting 1 to 20, still find the strength to assault. It’s amazing. I find in them the same passion as those of Verdun. We do not pierce anywhere and suffer terrifying losses, some battalions have lost more than 60% of their troops sometimes even more. " "Dunkirk provides me with proof that the Frenchman is one of the best fighters in the world." General Georg Von Kuchler.
The conversations where good, but it still came down to Hitler's War of the Generals. Hitler wanted to take credit for everything that went right and blame others when things went wrong. And letting 300,000 British troops slip through his fingers, was well worth it to Hitler to have a handful of Generals in his grasp. There is much of Hitler's motives that we can never definitely know, but one thing we can know for sure, after Dunkirk the Sitzkrieg was definitely over.
@@pavivier I figure as long as we acknowledge that it's a hypothetical conversation then that's fine. If we purposefully misled our viewers then that would be a problem. We also did extensive research to really understand each general's perspective about the battle and tried to model the conversation after something we think could have actually occurred. Just like how in documentaries they use footage from reenactments to show a hypothetical of how combat would have looked, we used animations to show a hypothetical of how a conversation would have looked.
@@behindthearmchair8727 Oh definitely, the statement at the start was more than enough, my dislike for it is purely personal and it isn't misleading at all. There were more Luftwaffe planes under the English Channel than there were U-Boats. And there were more U-Boats providing air support at Stalingrad than there were Luftwaffe. Dick Dastardly and Muttley would have commanded the Luftwaffe with more success than Goering. But they were too busy trying to catch that Pigeon *NOW!*
You jest. But there was an SOE plan to assassinate Goering. It was decided that his removal would hinder the Allies rather than help them so the plan was shelved.
I have to say Griffin, the animation and voice acting made this video beautiful. I cannot imagine how much time you've must have spent on making this. Super great done and keep going but don't exhaust yourself!
true! do not exhaust yourself griffin! otherwise Hitler won't let you attack those defenseless divions on dunkirk... eh i mean post another video. yeah, otherwise Hitler won't let you post another video! ... that doesn't sound right...............
I think Hitler expected the British to negotiate with Germany as feelings among most of the British aristocracy and Establishment were sympathetic ( and quite well connected ) to the Nazis war against Bolshevism. This is one theory for Hitler holding back for a few days during the Dunkirk campaign.
Hitler felt like what his army had just accomplished excluded the possibility of continued war against Britain... what happened at Dunkirk wasn't really a miracle as much as a matter of the trapped Allied armies being spared as a gesture of goodwill to Britain, who Hitler was convinced would then come to terms and cooperate against Stalin. It's very well documented that Hitler never wished to fight the Brits or even challenge their naval supremacy. The lesson I suppose is to never make such assumptions, never squander a golden opportunity to destroy the enemy.
@@jeremybunn8473 It's pretty obvious that is what happened. When I was in school Dunkirk was characterized as a miracle but in the years since I've come to realize it was largely a moment of weakness/overconfidence/wishful thinking by Hitler. He never dreamed Britain would refuse to come to terms after what amounts to a serious gesture of goodwill on his part. For somewhat obvious reasons (mostly political), this reality is obscured in Western history texts.
@@bobshenix Hitler didn't order the halt, Von Rundstedt did. His Panzer Divisions had been fighting for 3 days without rest, had outrun their Infantry and Artillery support and were suffering 50% attrition rates for their Tanks. On the side of the Allies in Dunkirk they had good defensive positions, AT Guns, Tanks and, with no way out, would fight ferociously. Von Rundstedt ordered the halt because, well, wasting his Panzers at a worthless attack on Dunkirk could have cost the Invasion of France dearly. Tanks, without Infantry, will get butchered in Urban Combat. Just look at Turkey wasting it's Leopard 2s by sending them into cities alone, only for some teenager with an RPG-7 to put a rocket in the side of it. Invading Dunkirk would have been a waste of time and material for a 50% chance of grabbing a few extra kills/POWs, or losing multiple Panzers and having to retreat while the Allies get away, thus making the rest of the invasion potentially fail or have much higher casualties. Hell, the Armies at Dunkirk could have even counterattacked if they repealed the Germans, which would have been disastrous for Germany and their logistics.

What did the Germans learn from Dunkirk? The British saved their professional soldiers British eventually won the war. The Germans lost their most experienced army, 6th army and all the equipment at Stalingrad for nothing. This gave 'the USSR impetus to win the war. A temporary retreat is a good thing.
@David Kuijl "Now they say that the allies never helped us, but it can't be denied that the Americans gave us so many goods without which we wouldn't have been able to form our reserves and continue the war... We didn’t have explosives, gunpowder. We didn’t have anything to charge our rifle cartridges with. The Americans really saved us with their gunpowder and explosives. And how much sheet steel they gave us! How could we have produced our tanks without American steel? But now they make it seem as if we had an abundance of all that. Without American trucks we wouldn’t have had anything to pull our artillery with." -Marshall Georgy Zhukov They were called the "Allies" for a reason. The Soviets needed the UK and USA, and vice-versa. A man like Stalin wouldn't ask for help unless he needed it, and he was constantly demanding the opening of a Western Front to relieve his troops.

At the Battle of Montcornet ! De Gaulle had even written a book well before the Second World War to alert the French high command on the importance of war of movement with mechanized means where he had perfectly predicted all the German strategy and in particular the breakthrough through Sedan. He had acquired military command experience during the Soviet-Polish war where he had obtained a quote and especially during the battle of Verdun and throughout the ww1 but he was mocked and demeaned by the politicians of the time ... He put his plans into action with the Offensive of Montcornet which was a success while the Allied armies were breaking up. Unfortunately his strategy would have had to be applied on a larger scale to be effective.
Zericoyo _ feel bad for him the more I learn. He saw how the next war would be fought and knew better then most how easily peace in France could be flipped on its head. He has the solutions but a bunch of assholes won't let him fix the problem.
There was several counter attacks. One British counter attack caused the SS 'Totenkopf' to break and run in panic. It lead some Germans to conclude they required more time to prepare their final offensive. They had very little intelligence about British and French strength in the pocket and they certainly did not anticipate a vast naval rescue.
@@DeafLord18 Yep for info his mentor was Philippe Pétain in Person. He had so much respect for him for the 1st World War that he called his son "Philippe" in homage to "Philippe Pétain". No, they wouldn’t have surrendered. This Germanic obsession of winning one battle = win the war is so preposterous it has to be countered at every turn. Britain, safe behind the channel, would build up its army again while fighting on every other front and wait for the “New World” aka the Dominions (and not the USA like everyone believes) to build up their own strength and help liberate France/defeat Germany. To put it bluntly, no general in their right mind would fold with the hand Britain was dealt. This was always the plan. The bravery of the civilian men that sailed across the channel to help their fellow countryman is a characteristic and a strength that lies deep within us all. We don’t often find ourselves in situations or circumstances that cause and require us to summon that kind of selfless heroism. When the stakes are as high as having to protect your homeland from the threat of tyranny, suffering, and subjugation of your fellow countrymen I think most people would sail that proverbial boat straight into a war zone in order to keep that from happening. That kind of power is in the hearts of all good men and women and it’s that strength that evil men fear and wish to stomp out. We are constantly divided in this country and I find myself falling victim to the tribalism in our media all the time. Feeling forced to pick a side and trying to push my opinion onto other almost in a dogmatic way. For that I am guilty and I know many others are as well. We all must remember that as Americans we have to stand up to that same kind of evil that was exhibited at dinkirk by the German leaders. There is nothing more that the most powerful evil selfish egomaniac men want in the world than to divide us and make us easy to control. We must stand together and we must all be willing to sail into war for our brothers and sisters no matter what political or religious values we each hold individually.
Its interesting seeing the battle of my hometown from a different perspective. We learn more about the Victory of operation Dynamo than the fails of the Germans. Also Dunkirk used to be a beautiful city before the war but it got all destroyed and rebuilt quickly to accommodate the thousand of homeless.

@@CharlesDeGoat The amount of disrespect you are portraying is unbelievable. There should be mutual respect for all nationalities who managed to turn Dunkirk from what looked like a certain disaster into a success, that allowed 330,000 soldiers to continue the fight. 120,000 of which were of other nationalities, including French soldiers. To say that the French were the only ones fighting is an insult to those British soliders who died in the Siege of Calais, who knowingly gave there lives so these 330k had a chance to survive, and it is also an insult to the Belguims, Polish and Dutch and potentially others who gave their lives in support. The conversations where good, but it still came down to Hitler's War of the Generals. Hitler wanted to take credit for everything that went right and blame others when things went wrong. And letting 300,000 British troops slip through his fingers, was well worth it to Hitler to have a handful of Generals in his grasp. There is much of Hitler's motives that we can never definitely know, but one thing we can know for sure, after Dunkirk the Sitzkrieg was definitely over.
i disagree , i don't think putting words in historical figures moths is a good thing for a documentary to do unless they actually said them
@@pavivier I figure as long as we acknowledge that it's a hypothetical conversation then that's fine. If we purposefully misled our viewers then that would be a problem.

Hitler didn't order the halt, Von Rundstedt did.

It will never cease to amaze me how much respect soldiers have for each other regardless of who they’re fighting for.
The Germans had no respect for Polish or Russian soldiers, only intense hatred. And vice-versa I suppose.
@@tonywells6990 Mm no. The Germans did have respect for Slavs and Jews. Most did.
They fought because of nationalism and patriotism. Because of family and friends.
Most were threatened, forced, and conscripted to fight. Most didn't agree with Hitler's supremacist ideals, but they thought it would rebuild Germany, so they had to go with it.
They were national socialists, not zealous crusaders.
They were a fascist-forced people, not racist torturers.

The French and Belgian role in the evacuation of Dunkirk is massively understated. If it wasn’t for them, Britain would have had to surrender.
Why would Britain have had to surrender?
no they wouldnt. there were 340k soldiers.thats more than enough to defend the germans and it was Britains best and most well equipped army.
@@redeese9268 Subsequently, the Royal & Merchant Navies lifted a further 191,870 men, together with 310 artillery pieces, 2292 vehicles, and 1800 tons of stores, from ports in Western France, during Operations Aerial & Cycle.
The British have been doing this strategy since the War of the Spanish Succession because it works. What difference if France is captured when Germany can’t even grow enough food to feed their own people, much less oil for their machinery.

1. Pronounce the word "a" as "uh" Nobody pronounces it "ay".
2. Pronounce the word "the" as "thuh" when it precedes a consonant sound, such as "the plane" or "the tank" but pronounce it "thee" when it precedes a vowel sound, such as "the apple" or "the honest man" or "the X-ray".
