If you had to buy a 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser next week, this one would be a good buy.

  • This 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser is well-maintained and relatively clean. It feels like the right balance of project and ready-to-roll. If only the pricing on these wasn't so much relative to the recent past.

I have an identical 2001 with 325,000 miles. Runs and drives like new and believe it or not looks as good as that one!

Your knowledge is impressive thank you for sharing. The holy grail for 100 series is sub 100,000 miles and a southern car with no rust. You can spend 20 grand making it new and driving it for the next 20 years if that’s the case. But those are very hard to find. most have 150,000 miles plus and historical geography makes the undercarriage suspect

On my 100, shortly before selling it, I noticed the faint outline of a dealer sticker that had been removed prior to my ownership. In the right light you could make out exactly what it said. So even if you don't see one right away, it's worth trying different angles, squinting, etc. to see if any remnants remain.

Gulf States Toyota did the flares! For a while they were operating independently of Toyota Motor North America, so they did a lot of stuff on their own, mainly odd accessories and importing weird build specs.

I don’t like the flares! Not here, not on the 200, and not on the 80. If I get a Tundra, I’m taking off the flares on it too!

I just bought a 2000 100 series for 14,500. Lived most of its life in Houston tx then spent about 4ish years in Colorado. 167k miles. Pretty solid service records. The front seats need to be replaced and it has a ding in the passenger front door, some light scratching and a decent ding in the driver bumper. Most service records at dealership. Looks like the first owner could have gotten older or sick. For about 3 years the mileage barely moved and the service records just show state inspections. Sold at auction then shot yo to Colorado. Minimal rusting. Going to work on restoring it back to its original glory little by little and drive this thing to 400k miles Land Cruiser gods willing 😂

I'm eyeing that auction. It's rough still for buyers. I've got a lovely GX470 and have always wanted a 100 LC, and thought this might be the one... but the $27k estimate hurts, and I don't think it's far off what it'll close at. BaT is an extreme example, but it seems EVERYONE is flipping these days.

I’m waiting the day when flippers get left holding the bag. There are a few examples, but there’s still money to be made.

@@thelandcruiserproject As an owner yourself, would you pay $25-27k on such an example? All my past Toyotas have been truly rust free, no frame paint or any funny business. I'd like the same for any 100 I own, but my gosh the price delta to get there is painful. Even high mileage/rust free hurts. Maybe the market is cooling a bit. Or maybe I just say that to make myself feel better.

No - because that price is bonkers. BaT represents the high end of the market and it gets even more exaggerated for the clean and low mileage specimens.
What you want to do is find this type of vehicle on the private market and you’ll get it for 10-30% less, assuming you’ve got cash in hand and can move fast.
To some, the premium of having BaT present you with the good specimens is worth that premium. All you have to do is check your inbox and bid. It’s the east button.

@@thelandcruiserproject That's probably what I needed to hear. There's always some old dude (or gal) with deeper pockets too that wants to hit that easy button more, too.
