I love how we can appreciate the subtleties of Satriani's playing with well explained videos like this (wish youtube existed years ago!) Thanks LNL alll the best for 2022
Wow David. Your preface to the lesson is exactly how I felt. I couldn’t get on board with Vai because I was deathly loyal to Eddie. But Satch was perfectly ok to like and learn from. Lol.
Joe satch is one of my all time favorites. One of the reasons I wanted to learn how to play. There’s Joe, Zack wylde and Dimebag. I love the legato licks and melodic ideas satch produces. He’s an infinite source of musical inspiration. I’m always blown away by mr Brewster as well. This guys not only can play with the best of them but he also knows his theory inside and out. He has a way of explaining things that really makes sense, even to me, and I have no idea what I’m doing most of the time. 😀 love your lessons! Thank you and happy new year!
Great lesson Dave!! I have been a Satch fan for years but have fallen out of the loop for the last 10 or so. This lesson had gotten me back into his music again!! It doesn’t get much mention but I absolutely love his Crystal Planet album. I think it just came along at the right time in my life, I was starting college and getting out on my own a bit. It was the soundtrack to my life for many months after it was released.
Joe Satriani is a GIANT of guitar. It takes a mighty talented player to step into the shoes of a post vacated by the venerable Ritchie Blackmore. Joe did just that in 1994 for Deep Purple. Would have loved to see how it all would have turned out if he had stuck with Purple for a few years & albums. Thanks for the great lesson!
Satch is my favourite electric guitar player. Circa 2006 I was a teenager and stumbled across Crushing Day off of SwtA which blew me away. I had been listening to rock and heavy metal for a 2 or 3 years and had never heard of him or the guitar virtuoso genre. It sparked a interest in music theory and becoming a better guitar player for me. Thanks for doing this.
I also dig what he's done with Chickenfoot.. What a lineup Hagar, Anthony, Chad n of course the master Satch. Keep em coming Dave. Love your content. ROCK ON 🎸
The Red House riff reminds me of Leslie West, in my opinion Satriani is so accessible because he listened to the greats and allowed himself to be influenced!
Great video! I remember listening to the radio in late 1986, a local college station did a metal show on Friday nights, and they played Hordes of Locusts. I was blown away! At the time I was into Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, but prior to that was into Maiden, Priest, NWOBHM, and also Scorpions, UFO, Schenker, Rainbow so I was used to some amazing guitar players, but Satriani was different. Based on that song I bought Not of This Earth and the next couple of Satriani’s albums. My musical tastes changed in the late 80s but I recently bought Not of This Earth and Surfing with the Alien on CD and it is still great!
In the 80's a friend of mine kept telling me I should take guitar lessons from this guy named "Joe" at _Tupper and Reed Music_ in Berkeley. I actually often went to that very music store on the weekends because they had the best selection of sheet music, and I was transcribing violin solos for guitar (Bach, Vivaldi, Paganini etc). I even remember seeing this guitar instructor come out from lessons downstairs talking to students a few times, and though he seemed like a cool guy, I was more interested in getting a job giving lessons if anything. But they said they had that pretty well covered (now I know why, lols). But my friend persisted and I was seriously considering checking this teacher out when I first heard _Not Of This Earth_ and was blown away. Then maybe a week after that Surfing With The Alien came out, and I was ass out. :/ No doubt I would have only been able to afford his lessons for a couple of months had I jumped on it immediately, but I still can't help but kick myself for lagging until it was too late. Luckily for me I was friends with a half dozen of his students, so a lot of what he taught was passed down to me through trading licks and ideas with them. But still.. lols
Your use of the volume knob on your guitar is incredible,I don’t even think you think about it at all , you just do it . Very underrated skill that most guitarists lack.
I was going to unfollow you a while back. Something didn't click with you. But now I'm glad I didn't unfollow you! Amazing class you just gave me! Thx and Happy New Year's!! I will make sure I go to your channel for now on! FYI BAD ASS
Became a fan of his after hearing Satch Boogie on the radio. First cassette that I got was Time Machine. Love the title track, Speed of Light and others plus the live stuff. Haven't looked back since. He's still my fave.
Satch is the boss. A great composer and technician but always so melodic. I don’t think we can underestimate the importance of the lessons he took with Lennie Tristano. If you notice his licks tend to be things that you could sing. That's because Tristano played him slowed down licks by the likes of Charlie Parker which he made him sing and then transcribe for the guitar and he emphasised making your playing expressive. I would encourage The Late Night Lessons community to try to transcribe Miles Davis licks and Charlie Parker licks for guitar if they feel stuck in a rut. It will definitely broaden their playing.
Happy New Year, Mr B. Promised myself I'd make great strides in my playing this year. Noticed that little mistake you made, there, and I'm aiming to make my mistakes sound as good as yours (tho, mine will certainly be more frequent). Thanks, and looking forward to another year of your great vids
Hey Dave, love your cool channel....Badr, from North Africa , Libya...... Somewhere around that time, Joe has toured with Deep Purple after Ritchie left....I know he was also offered to join Purple but declined due to solo contract....or something. Cheers
I remember the V-AMP. What a great modeller it was. Great sound compared to the POD of the era. I recently upgraded my Zoom G92.tt I've used since 2007 to a NUX MG-30. I hope it lasts as long as the Zoom.
On lick #3 I am curious how on the double stop bend that the high note on the 6th string is not going flat? Is your whammy bar blocked or is a particular type of whammy tailpiece?
I would really be interested in taking live Skype or some kind of FaceTime lessons from you I'm from the back hills of Kentucky and nobody around here since I came home from the Marine corps gives any type of lessons I was in an accident and it has affected my memory and playing ability just need somebody to give me some guidance I played for 14 years but you can't tell it LOL anyway I really enjoy your lessons they are extremely helpful
I was a senior in high school when Surfing with the Alien hit. I’ll never forget it great memories. Poor Ronnie Montrose released the Speed of Sound @ that time & it was excellent but Surfing with the Alien destroyed that albums success. Thanks 🍺’ski 🤟
@@voronOsphere There is an abundance of pro-shot material. Satriani Live!, Live In Paris, Satchurated, the Montreux Jazz festival early appearance, and an abundance of other fan shot material, and pro shot G3 shows (lots).
@@mgdarenz As long as David's doing the heavy lifting of transcribing the licks for us, I don't care what video he looks at, to bring us cool riffs & licks, as long as he stays inspired enough to keep doing it. David always dives into hideous videos for us and pulls out all kinds of amazing musical gems!
This guy is a monster player!! I'm talking about David Brewster from Late Night Lessons of course!👌🎸
Yes!
Dave is the Human Jukebox.
Yes, Dave is pretty darned great!
He is!
Yup. For sure.
Love what you're doing guitar brother.

The 3rd lick was sick! I can't get it out of my head.
And the tone of that fender is quite nice 💥💥💥💥💥💯💯💯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤘🤘🤘🤘👍✌️
Thank you David
Clicked instantly ... Satch fanatic here 30 years now!
tone is glorious here brother🎸💪
Great analysis. That is a lesson on its own.
Three is not enough! More More More!!!
Heck yeah! The reason I became a shredder! Total musicality, melodic and finesse.
I love the bonus licks and they never disappoint
My favourite Satch period, thanks David :)

Another master Late Night Lesson!!!!
Wow, this was really great! Having started with Surfing (way back when), the Jagger era is brand new to me. Thanks brother! D 😎🤙🏼
This is awesome thanks man. My goal for 2022 is just to bend in tune all the time and this is a perfect start to the year.

Nice David! Okay, the licks are great of course... but the thing that alwayd shocks me is seeing Satch with hair! 😆 🤣 😂
I like the idea of choosing licks over a song that most everyone would likely end of playing! Thanks!

I think a reasonable goal for for me this year would be to learn and retain 1 lick/phrase/chord from each video posted in 2022.
That's a great idea! This channel covers so many styles that any guitar player would greatly expand in ability doing that!
Satch is a beast - melody, feel, shred, as is Mr B - a total beast. Would b cool to hear more Satch from you.
Man, is there anything you can't do! Just great videos!
Satriani is a very talented guitar player/musician! The live version of ‘Echo’ from the ‘Time Machine’ album is unreal!

Interesting to learn about the link between Mick Jagger and Satriani. Jagger also helped Living Colour get their big break around the same time.
Jeff Beck with Mick Jagger is also amazing!
Going to Japan has helped many players survive the lean years and get to the next level.
Nice 👍🙂

Great lesson/video .... Unfortunately SCREW TUBES endless obnoxious commercials make it impossible to watch all the way through 😠
lol...i had every one of those magazines.
I dream of being criticised for sounding too much like Satriani 😢🇬🇧 Great start to the year DB 🇬🇧👍

Eddie, joe, Eric Johnson to me are still the standard to work towards!
mmm...Satch....thx.... \m/
The second part is based of the E9
We don't have Randy Rhoads anymore, but we have Joe Satriani!

The Lydian king 👑
Stolen my fair share of licks from Joe😁
Happy New Year David🤘
Hey man, what club is that support shirt for?
👍

Surfing and Eric Johnson tones from that era! Btw you would love zakk wyldes group black label society. The album covers are similar to yours.

I love both of them
Satch!
i need the lick that would be the second bridge in mystical potatohead fast alternate picked repeating pattern.. at least thats what i think hes doing
Holy shit, it's strange seeing Satch with hair.
You chose an 88 bootleg clip with Jagger to showcase Satch? SMH.
What other obscure Satriani video would you have chosen (for David to break down a few licks from for you) instead of this video and these licks?
