They were a strange version of New Wave because "New Wave" was really a reference to a wave of music from the UK...the new British Invasion. MP wasn't from the UK, so technically they weren't new wave, they came from an LA and NY hard rock background.
I have a priceless possession. I’m looking at it right now. I have one of Terry’s drumsticks. He beat the shit out of it. I acquired it (special memory) when he threw it out during a show. I like Missing Persons because they had a heavier sound than most new wave bands. Dale's singing, the drumming, and the guitar riffs in this song push towards hard rock. They found a really nice balance of punch and pop.
It helps that they had a real drummer, Terry Bozzio. As opposed to a cliche 80s drum machine or your typical new wave drummer. Bozzio played with Zappa during his creative peak, which means he played some of the hardest songs ever written. This was almost a step down for him, into the pop world. Or just a different direction. But he definitely gave this band some serious balls. Something a lot that music is missing.
