I have 3 different types of grow lights. Used them on my plants all winter. I had neighbors ask me what I was "growing in the spare bedroom". lol They saved my succulents this winter in LA. I started using 24 hours, but when I saw one of your videos, I did only 8 to 12 hours a day. They grew a lot better that way.
I want to ask how you set up your succulents in your spare bedroom? I have a spare bedroom too but I am not quite sure how to display them for sunlight and air ventilation. Thank you very much
OMG finally I found an answer for what brightness to use!! Everyone says high, low, grow lights etc but no one says what watt, kelvin, brightness etc to use I found you as a guest on another channel I was subscribed to and have subscribed to you! Love the knowledge you bring as well as how to make the hobby affordable for as many people as possible! ❤
I have so many grow lights stashed in Amazon cart never purchased. I've been so lost as to what I needed. The blurple ones I did not want all over my house. So glad you did this!!
Wow this is an eye opening video! I’ve been using the Blurple lights and noticed that the succulents grow slow and still stretch. I had no idea you could use a white light!! This is so great to know. 💚💚
Wow, thank you for this! ☺️ I didn’t think I needed grow lights ... But now that I know it can be as simple as a desk lamp, it might help to keep my indoor arrangement healthy & happy!
They are regular bulbs just like she said.. Any Home Depot Walmart etc. Carries them Not sure why they said their not regular bulbs. I just wanted to let you know yes they are regular bulbs just higher linens that's all Same ones I use for my garden seedlings 🌱 every year. Fluorescent is a great bulb too!!
When I first bought my first grow light, I thought I did “research” and purchased the red/blue light and I did not like it, but used it for a year or so because I did not know exactly what to do. I then decided to try a brighter one and bingo, my plants became much happier. Thank you for this info.....I will do even better! 😁👍🏻
Just found you… I have just become a succulent cultivator , I’m addicted already…love all you do and your vibe ,thank you so much all the way from Australia ☮️🇦🇺🌈 🥰🪴
Wow, I never looked into grow lights, I just assumed that they were special lights(kinda like the ones you use for baby chickens) and I am so glad I watched this now! Realizing I just need a regular lamp, and bright light! Going to start doing this now!😍
You have no idea how much time and money you saved me. I purchased three Goose Neck Desk lamps with 100w and 1500 lumens for my succulents. All for under $100 vs buying a plant stand with grow lights built in. Still trying to arrange plants according to light needs, but overall, I’m very happy with your advice. Thank you! 😊
Ok,, you've convinced me. I always steered clear of grow lights, but now I've "seen the light'. I realize my plants will love me even more with some help from more light. Thanks for showing me what's best, how to use it, and what to avoid. Bless you, Cassidy. You are definitely the succulent guru of the world!!
I bought some of the lights on the Amazon list, and they saved my succulents through the last winter. They were the smaller LED 6 strip lighting. With how many succs I have, I may need my husband to build me something like you have. I'm happily overwhelmed by succulents.
I got all my answers related to grow lights. Thanks for making it so simple. And most importantly, what I love is your honesty. Thank you once again. Really appreciate. 🙏

So glad to see this video! I was going to go shopping for grow lights tomorrow and now I know what to get and it’s not going to cost the fortune like I thought it would 😃
I was so excited to hear you use my term "blurple"! I don't use blurple lights for my plant friends. I've found a good set of dual head grow lights that I've been using for some time. I actually did have a desk lamp with a daylight bulb in it when I first started out and only had 2 plants. Sadly, the desk lamp broke. I also acquired more plants (I don't know how that happened) and figured they'd need more light.
Great info! I ended up buying some LED strip lights that were labeled as grow lights. I've done pretty well with them, but it's good to know that I have more options for lights than I thought!
I have a fluorescent light in my kitchen and wondered if I could use it for my succulents. Thank you for answering that question and for all your great tips! I love your collection btw. I’m hoping mine will look more like that eventually.
I've used the blue red LED while overwintering some of my plants in my garage. Even supplementing those with "plant" lights (those that have that blueish film on them), my plants survive, but don't thrive. Next season, definitely time to switch to something closer to daylight.
Very good advice. Lumens, not watts. Lumens measures the total light power from the bulb, so you might get different results if the bulbs have different directivities. A long bulb and a spherical bulb will give different results. What really matters is lux, the power per unit area at the plant level. That will depend on distance from the light. That is the measure we should be using. Lux and lumens are 2 different measures!
@@Succulentsandsunshine the lamps should be labelled with lumens, as that is intrinsic to the lamp. Lux is the light intensity at the soil level, so it would depend on the installation and the distance between the lamp and the soil, so it is not intrinsic to the lamp. We should be specifying light intensity (lux) at the plant. You can get simple apps to measure that.
Thanks for providing such a specific and documented explanation of what to look for when purchasing artificial lighting. This beats anything else I've seen on the subject, especially by providing the link to the specific products on Amazon!
I'm using the purple/blue grow lights. They're about 14" above the succulents. Some of the smaller ones are stretching, I'll have to move the lights closer to the succulents. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for the reassurance that the bulbs that I put into clamp on bulb holders won't harm my succulents. I created a rack above the table using a piece of wire shelving and some PVC type plastic legs. I then clamped the lights to the rack, so I can move them around when needed.
I don't have any succulents inside (yet), but I'm going to file this away for future reference. It is explained so clearly even I won't be able to mess it up - hopefully!
I had no idea it was that simple!! Probably, because I’m missing the green spectrum on my lights is why my succulents are still stretching and I’m not getting the colors you are getting. Thank you for the links and the info!
Wow! I have been wanting to some grow lights but when I would look for them it was so overwhelming that I would just say later.... You really did a good job explaining them so I’m looking forward to looking again. Thanks!
I actually was just researching the affects of specific color spectrum on plant growth. The reason why the blue and red lights don't work as well as full-spectrum bulbs/light is down to several factors. However, a big one that you somewhat touched on is that blue and red grow lights are lacking in the green light spectrum. It turns out while blue and red lights are readily absorbed by the plant's chlorophyll (thus spawning the huge menagerie of "blurples" in the indoor plant community), green light is also important in photosynthesis. Previously, it was thought to not be very important for plant growth/health due to the fact that the plant would, well, reflect some of the green spectrum back (what we see is what light is reflected back at us so this is why plants appear green to us) . It turns out the green light spectrum is also very important in photosynthesis, particularly when it comes to the lower leaves (because it isn't as readily absorbed as red and blue lights, light in the green spectrum aren't as readily stopped/absorbed by the upper leaves of the plant and are able to "travel" to the lower leaves where they can continue to be partially absorbed by the plant to continue on its merry photosynthesizing way). Basically, green light is necessary for increased photosynthesis efficiency....I think it may also play a role in the efficiency of the plant's gas exchange but can't remember. Then there are other factors (UV lighting, far-red light, and I'm sure a multitude of other things we are only just learning about). Basically, white light for growing= a more well-rounded diet for the plant whereas "blurple" light= putting your plant on a diet by taking away an entire food group. ETA: A better example than food/diet is probably something like being locked in one room all the time, even with all your survival necessities, and being able to freely come and go as you wish. You can survive being locked in one room because your most basic needs are still being met but you aren't going to thrive and are generally going to be happier if you can come and go as you please. Also, the reason for the stretching in plants under the "blurples" (which I love) is likely due to the imbalanced light spectrum being offered to the plant--more specifically, the red light spectrum .
great info iam about to acquire growlights the soonest possible but good thing ive watched ur video. now all i need to use is just an LED light..thank you so much..god bless you😊

If what you're using is working, keep going with that. But if you're ready to add more lights you can try these: #ad amazon.com/shop/succulentsandsunshine
I bought an led red blue white clip on grow light. I like it because it has a timer setting. I noticed I have to place it super close to my murasaki succulent or it will stretch. Everybody else is happy though! My sop and sod do well and everybody else is good do have to place it close to the murasaki like 2 inches away. It doesn't burn anyone else and they do great. That being said I still have them by a window so they do get some direct light, its just not that bright thats why I took out my led to help. Other windows in the house get loads of light but not in my room.
So, if course I invested in the lights that can be blue, red, or combined (sigh). They are on 12 hours a day. Guess I'll need to shop again. Thanks for the info
Grow lights are so much easier and cheaper than the old days when only metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps worked. They were expensive and ran your light bill so high that it just wasn't practical. I just use the LED lights that I can afford at the time that I decide I need more, and the panels and clip-on bunny ears types have worked fine for me.

Excellent video on a timely topic for me because I am growing succulents and seeds in a room with no windows. I bought a Vogek light but not sure if they are bright enough. Their spec sheet doesn't mention lumins. Succulents are starting to show growth. I am concerned about my Astrophytum asteria seeds stretching though and the jury is still out. All you info helped me understand the nebulous world of grow lights! Thanks!
The Home Depot has a great little section on grow lights, from bulbs to rods to panels. I have 2 different LED bulbs $16 and $30 over a succulent collection of 36 plants. From what I can see, the cheaper ones work Ok on short distance, with a few small succulents in 2in and 4in pots, not much for coloring up; but i think they would be great for plants that need medium light, like aroids and such. The $30 light bulb is much better for coloring up the succulents on 3foot tall wire shelves! I use them together to cover the area I need.
I have moved most of my indoor succulents to an open shelving unit by a south facing window. I tried a grow light first (it was one that only had the blue and red lights) and I wasn’t happy with the results. My succulents are doing much better now with the natural sunlight! I am starting to have trouble with bugs, mostly scale, and am using the 70% isopropyl alcohol to combat them. I would be very interested in hearing more tips and tricks for combating bugs on indoor succulents please! Thank you Cassidy!
Thanks for the suggestion! 70% isopropyl alcohol is usually our go to for combatting them, it can take some time to get rid of unfortunately. You can also watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/tqlTa9Hhmpw/v-deo.html

OhMyGosh thank you so much for this info! I’m ready to add some grow lights to my home but literally have no idea what I’m doing! This information is so very helpful! Thank you!!
I used kessil led 160 & Kessil 360x as experiment to grow my succulents. Kessil led grow coral & I’m sure it work for succulents Expensive light but I’ve it already so let give a try
I use barrina T5 grow lights. My succulents thrives on it but their colors are not popping out. I will try one of the lights you have in your amazon link and see if it will help my succulents get stress colors.
My flourescent grow light "Floralight" is not nearly as bright as the three arm led. I have the fourescent lights down to 8" from mysucculents for 14 hours a day and they are very happy, no stretching and showing some colour but I intend to get another set of led for the growing succulent collection!
i used 7.500 lux (50 watts) and all my succulents grew like an instagrams succulents. pretty, colorful, healthy, shiny and compact.

I'm so glad this helped! I've found that "grow lights" for succulents are so much simpler than it seems. But it took me years to figure it out 😆
Last year I used the purple grow lights and my house looked like a brothel from the outside! Needless to say they didn’t last too long!🙃

That happened to me too! I used a lamp for dark treatment in the winter and our bedroom surely looked like the red light district 😅

You are very welcome! Best of luck 🙂
I agree. I cannot find bulbs that are labeled as "grow light ", so I use LED light for a year. My plants grow really slow, but surviving.
You can also watch this video:

Am looking into getting a grow light but had never heard of a blurple light. Thanks for this info!
Great concise explanation of grow lights! Thank you!
I have a blurpie haha. But it’s doing ok I think. But I went to Walmart and bought 2 led desk white lights and I’m going to use them
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m in the market for grow lights and will check out your Amazon site for your recommendations!
This was great information. Had no idea that white lights are the best. Have a couple color lights that I will change out.
I have the purple grow lights because I did not know I could use the white regular led bulbs. That is great to know!
Ooo! Wish I had seen this before I bought my “Burple” light!! Guess I’ll be returning it and getting a white one! Lol! Thank you!!! ❤️
Great video. thanks for the information.
I think I'll be adding more lights to my set up. Thank you for this video
I always wondered what the lux was on the bulb. Thankyou for sharing
I’m excited to hear that LEDs will work! Maybe I can convince husband to let me put succulents near the lamps in the living room!
How did that go?:)
Thank you for helping me set up my new grow lights! 😉
i love you! thank you for this! i almost bought a uv lamp with box lmao. i am so scaredof the uv thing thank goodness a lamp day light works
I use clip on lamps with reflectors and grow bulbs. My daughter gave them to me.
Thanks! Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to "aim" a light to help the succulents on my floating shelves!
You just answered many of the questions I've had.... many thanks!

My goal by the end of fall is to get lights installed on my shelves so I don’t get stretching this winter!!
Now see I wondered if I was doing it wrong and leaving my lights on all day long on my plants. I knew I probably wasn't supposed to do that so I think I'm going to start tonight turning them off when we go to bed and back on on the am
OhMyGosh thank you so much for this info! I’m ready to add some grow lights to my home but literally have no idea what I’m doing! This information is so very helpful! Thank you!!
You are very welcome! Happy to hear it was helpful
I used kessil led 160 & Kessil 360x as experiment to grow my succulents.
Kessil led grow coral & I’m sure it work for succulents
Expensive light but I’ve it already so let give a try
That sounds great! Experimenting with what you have is a great way to go.
