i've been an airsofter and diy-fixer for my airsofting-friends and myself for 13 years. only recently started looking at shimming, after having destroyed a v2. A gearbox has no secrets for me, i've seen most types of shells, mechanical/electrical triggers, etc.... i could almost asemble a gearbox blindfolded and though long, this video is saved on my computer.
your way of explaining is very thorough and even for someone who's main language isnt english, very clear.
no doubt on what to do and how to do it.
and, as an added bonus, i showed one of my airsoft-friends this, and he shimmed his first gearbox near-perfectly!
i've taken it to myself to, from now on, shim all gearboxes that i unscrew :-)
in all my years i've never tried it because of the 'oh my god shimming is something that takes days!' responds.
yesterday i shimmed my 11th gearbox, clocked in at 22 minutes.
    thanks man!
a very happy airsofter from belgium

not really. since recoil and pressure arent a thing with airsoft. And no need to lock the chamber before firing.
all an airsoft chamber does is move back and forth, it doesn't rotate into a lock.

That's because airsoft guns are toys that are comparably lazily designed. It's hard to make a simple design with few parts. The more parts you have, the likelier it is that any of them fail. It's not a big deal if an airsoft gun fails, but people die when real steel fails, so they have to make sure the design is as simple and reliable as possible.

As an undergrad in Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET.) I applaud your ability to communicate terminologies both scientific and unique-to-industry efficiently to an audience with little to zero knowledge on the topic. This is a fantastic skill to have, not to mention your mechanical ability, as well, which astounds me. You speak with experience and that in itself provides confidence when anyone goes to attempt shimming themselves. Concepts may *seem* simple to us knowledgeable in STEM subjects, but the hardest part is communicating that to customers who have *zero* knowledge and it is up to us to dumb it down enough to where it is digestible to the average consumer. You did that, sir. I applaud you ten times more for the 33 minutes and 48 seconds of free content filled with valuable information.

If it's not shimmed correctly the gears are able to oscillate and don't mesh correctly rubbing together drastically increasing wear. Also the increased friction creates heat and slows the gear box down and is noisy vs smooth and quiet. Overshimming means too tight and strain on the motor, battery, and other parts of the gearbox which could lead to shorts.

Another tip, some grips may press on to bevel gear bushings. If that happens that can potentially push the pushing to far in and it may hit the sector gear. I destroyed a set of brass bushings that way, If you have steel bushings your spur gear might take the fall instead. If your grip presses onto the bushings file it down on the inside to make room for the bushings.

5 years later and still going strong. My only complaint is that this is an instruction on shimming and you never showed any shimming. You showed before and after. You said whether it was top or bottom of the gear but it would have been nice to just show the placement so there is no confusion. Other than that well done and explained.

Ive tried shimming and it took me literally 6 hours. I was taking my time and paying very close attention to what i was doing, following all the rules jn this video. I also made sure each gear had 60 to 70% contact and it was flawless, i could spin it freely when screwed together. The gun over heated after a couple shots tho, and my pinion is fixed into the bevel gear so it meshes perfectly together, not to far in not to far out. Idk. Shimming is the only thing keepin me from teching on my guns.

If you have a dental pick set I would recommend putting your grip on with the receiver in place with the motor out. Take your pick and fi d the Interface between the grip and gearbox. If you can't get your pick between the two, your good. But if it slides in one side you should take down the sides of the grip where it touches the receiver.

I believe it's called setting "gear mesh" when you're working on the spacing between the bevel gear and the pinion gear. Just throwing that out there. At least that's what you call it when working on the exact same thing in the rear end gears of a vehicle.

May be called a spur gear because it resembles a spur. If you are not sure what a spur is look it up. It attaches to a boot and is used to “spur” a horse. Which encourages them to respond to using your heel to press into them to get them to move. They aren’t used much anymore, at least I have never used them.

This information took 30 seconds to find...
“Generally, when meshing pair of gears, the smaller gear is called a pinion gear. Also, it refers to the cylindrical gear that meshes with a rack in a rack-and-pinion mechanism which transforms rotational motion to linear motion.“
“Spur gears can be used to increase or decrease the torque, or power, of a given object.”
“A plain bearing, also known as a bushing, is a mechanical element used to reduce friction between rotating shafts and stationary support members.”

One question ! I have a fair amount of experience myself of working on guns and gearboxes, but now I want to do a DSG build. I want to use PDI 375mm 6.08 steel barrel. I'm looking for best trigger response (useing ASCU gen 4 and Super Shooter 14:1 gears) My question is about the barrel. Can I use such "long" barrel in DSG build ? Some say that it must be as short as 229 mm. Will be glad if you response. Cheers

    • @harvey1866
      @harvey1866 7 років тому +3

300mm max inner barrel works best for DSG builds it makes for good air volume with only using half the cylinder space, i tried a 455mm (AK47) and 509mm (M16) it just wasn't working in either very well, couldn't get a decent FPS and range etc was rather poor due to air volume vs barrel length.

    Another excellent video.
The Spur gear can be called that because it looks like a Spur.
It can be called a Step gear because it has a step on it, to step-up the torque.
All of the gears use spur cut teeth (vertically cut) so I suppose calling it a Step gear would be more technically correct as that differentiates it based on a unique characteristic :-)

ngl, shimming looks kinda easy. I know for some people it looks super complicated, but to me it looks like you’re simply using the shims to move your gears so they contact each other efficiently. Ex if your spur gear has too many shims it will be to high, and the teeth will scrape on the body of the bevel gear. Therefore wearing down the body of the bevel gear, and wearing down the teeth on your spur gear. Causing them to strip or break. TheAirsoftTech please correct me if I’m wrong.

As a machinist. The step gear is correctly named single step gear. It only has one step. A sper gear is another name for a cog. It dosnt have differential of rotation influence within the gear.

Something cool about the version 3 that you don't need to screenshot. you just use that top plate and the motor cage

If you are using a aftermarket grip keep in mind you gearbox will slightly wiggle if you shave the grip down so it's not touching the receiver.

    That's right about sound shimming!
I use SHS 100:300 Ultra Torque Up Gears with SHS High Tourque Motor. I shimmed this setup perfectly, but sounds of this setup is very, ekhm... Interesting. It's sounds really strange, but the most important - 500 FPS and no any issues. Thank you for this brilliant tutorial.

congrats you just got kicked out of airsoft for disobey'ing the velocity limit. 350 fps on most fields.
why not 500 fps? well the object is to hit the person not seriously injure him/her.

Hey Mr TaT you make all of this seem easy, having wrecked a gear box or two I know it is anything BUT thaty! You know what yu are talking about & your knowledge is spot on, I'm thinking unless you own the company or something you might be somewhat under-employed - expertise and the ability to convey ditto are rare skills and priceless, it (ALMOST) makes we want to tear into some of mine (S & T sterling, TM, Well and JG Scorp, Matrix MP40, Snow wolf M1938, Cyma AK74 U.) and the sensible part of me says leave it alone until something breaks and I cannot get out of fixing it

Very nice video. It is not to long at all. But M4 and AK platforms are the most common replicas we all use. I would really like to see how shimming and other tech stuff looks like on some of the other platforms, and what are the compatibility issues. Like say Version 1 gearbox,or version 6,or maybe M249 or SVD gearbox. I know you have probably done most of the known stuff out there.

I always heard people say it's some kind of sorcery, but seeing exactly how it is to be shimmed, it doesn't seem bad at all. I'm giving this a go on some replicas! Thanks for the video man! Subscribed.

One thing you didn’t bring up in this video (and I understand it’s from seven years ago, maybe you could mention it in an updated video?) is shimming the motor tower into the receiver hole so as to achieve a slip fit.

This is similar to how solid axles in cars and trucks are rebuilt. I’m surprised to see how rudimentary the gears are. I bet there could be a lot of improvements made in strength if you used helical gears or spiral bevel gears instead of just spur gears. Spur gears are generally (at least in the automotive world) easier and cheaper to make than helical gears or spiral bevel gears, but it is quite rare to find them in modern cars. Spiral bevel gears would however have to have different “bushings” though. They create axial thrust so they use thrust bearings, but on a scale this small I doubt you’d have to make it that complex
Edit: Also using helical gears would not only make the gears stronger but also quieter. I’d recommend maybe using some kind of grease to lubricate between the bushing and the gear. It would make the bushing last longer and create less heat as well. I’d recommend white lithium grease. I put that shit on everything. It’s petroleum based so it has long-term lubrication, it doesn’t drip or run so it won’t get flung around everywhere, and it’s typically used for shit that has a load bearing on it. You can get a little tube of it or do what I did and get a quart size tub of it.
