Try a yellow zucchini and peel it and take seeds out. I tried the yellow and can’t tell it’s zucchini. Thanks for the video looks good especially the lattice one.👍🤗
I’ve tried the zucchini mock apple pie (not keto version) and nobody knew it wasn’t apple. My recipe had lemon in it, it gave the zucchini more of a tang like apple.
We live in the Philippines where Chayote is cheap and plentiful. I had no idea chayote is keto. Just wOw, because we love stir fried chayote and can definitely make it now on keto. I used to love conventional apple pie so I will look for your chayote apple pie recipe as well as try this zucchini one. 😊
Jicama is a great option and stays slightly crisp like apples when cooked, and with celestial seasons apple cinnamon tea bags and even some apple flavor mio. Super yummy
Fuji and grannysmith apples are actually pretty low carb (12.8 and 14 net carbs respectively). I use them to make apple pies all the time. My husband can definitely tell the difference between an apple and a chayote, so I’m glad there are great low carb apples available.
peel and dice chayote squash and boil in the apple cinnamon tea until soft and then mix the normal apple pie spices..subbing the sugar of course and omg it's amazing
Thank you for the great video! My 1st attempt at duplicating apple pie, I used small yellow squash. There are almost no seeds and my non-keto family couldn't tell that it wasn't apple. So far, I haven't been able to find chayote in my city. I'll have to try the lattice. Thanks again! ♥️♥️♥️
Chokos are easy to get in Australia, years ago everyone grew one on their fence. If you store a choko in a dark place it sprouts easily and grows into a fruiting vine when planted. My gran used to tell me that during the war housewives used to make "apple pie " with Chokos and she said they were lovely. She used to say if you could find a blackberry patch and pick some you could make "apple and blackberry pie". She said they were extra tasty. Chokos also make great pickles or relish and are great grilled and smothered in butter. It's good to know they are low carb.
You two continue to amaze. I love how you explain with such humor and seriousness at the same time. Please bring the hubbies back again if they will. You're all adorable! Thanks for what you do.
My goal for Christmas is to do the lattice hand pies with your chayote recipe, and maybe jicama as well ("Life with Lori" uses jicama in her keto apple pie waffles and they look incredible). Ladies- I don't even like apple pie, so this is a testament to your very tempting, very fall bakery episode.
We have used yellow sqash to make apple pie and I feel it's better then zucchini. I use a little extra lemon juice to give more of a "granny Smith" flavor
really thin sliced and instpot pressure cooked jicama is my all time favorite apple replacement. a cool little tip is to blend 1/3 to 1/2 of your filling into a "apple sauce" which just helps with the texture and mouth feel too.
Chayote, which we call choko in Australia was fed to me as Apple pie for years by my grandmother before I found out. It was always a favourite. Probably because of the ton of sugar.😉
Thanks for the yellow squash suggestion, Athena -- I liked the peeled yellow squash soaked in apple cinnamon tea better than the chayote! Worked great!
Wow, these looks so good. Love the lattice idea. Did the Chayote bother your hands when peeling it? I've heard people complain about it. Some say to use gloves. What was your experience with it? I saw several people use the yellow summer squash instead of zucchini in making apple pie.. They say it has a more neutral flavor than zucchini. Have you had a chance to try the yellow squash? I love your recipes. Thank you for all the hard work that you put into these video's!
I’m definitely going to make these for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the video. ❤️ FYI: Chayote squash is pretty popular where I’m from in south Louisiana. We call them alligator pears or mirlitons (we pronounce it mer - lah - tawn).
@@ketotwins I was thinking you pronounced it right and our Louisiana accent changed how we pronounce it in the south. One day our dialects between Chicago and south Louisiana will be so different they’ll be 2 different languages. Good thing I’ve moved to Texas where we talk good. 😂
@@ketotwins if not from where they use mirliton nobody could pronounce it right. They love it here and stuff it. I made it once for my other half and he told me to never attempt again.
@@sternits it's French; you pronounce it right, I'm thinking. The guy in the video said "MEER lit tawn," (accent on meer.) And of course the "tawn" he pronounced from up in his nose, the way French always sounds to us anglophones.
I think I may just try a real apple - 24 carbs for a whole apple- one tart might be 1/3 of an apple? so 8 carbs maybe??? How dirty can we get lol. I do low carb anyhow and an apple tart for 8 carbs maybe even 10 isn't too bad.
Apple pie extract works great. I’ve used both regular apple extract and green apple extract. The green apple is my favorite. I also add a half tsp of acv and lemon juice. That helps too! 😋
Green apple koolaid powder would be good too to add to the cooking sauce or soak the faux apple in. I like the tea idea but the koolaid is a much stronger apple 🍏 flavor.
I use chayote (chokos, here is Oz) as faux apple for pies, crumbles, scrolls and muffins, however, I use a few drops of apple extract when cooking the chokos. When done, in whatever form, I would defy anyone that claimed they could tell the difference …. But that’s just me 😁. If you can get either apple extract or a sugar free apple flavouring, try it……..you then get the apple flavour as well as the crunch without the carbs. 😋😋
I had a bumper crop of tomatoes last year and ended up madly searching for ways to include green tomatoes. Came across a mock apple pie recipe. Although I am Keto 99% of the time…I love making (and eating) traditional flaky pie crust…and make non-keto pie 1% of the time. Anyway, served up my mock apple pie…and it was delish!! The texture is not altogether there if you are accustomed to apple chunks in pie, but the taste was delish and super apple-like…conjuring warm fall flavours from childhood. Green tomatoes are another low carb alternative. BTW: will try Keto Focus’ dough recipe that you raved about ...to see if I could ever give up traditional pie crust. Also, a sprinkle of granulated sweetener after applying the egg wash completes the apple hand pie experience!! 🍎
@igglewiggle6649, keto focus has a recipe for a nice keto roll out crust just like the traditional ones, it is very good, I have made it for my pumpkin pies. It is good for sweet or savory pies.
Chocho or chayote (squash) is widely available in Texas, Houston to be exact as for my knowledge. I always said it was like a cross between an apple and a very firm pear. It has a mild pear taste too. A jamacian friend (they love chocho) introduced it to me while I lived in Houston (20 years). I never looked up a recipe but I would eat it like an apple, and sometimes make it like your filling to use as glazed apples on my homemade whole wheat pancakes. It was excellent... and today YOU come up in my UA-cam feed making the hand pies like I always talked about but didn't. I moved back home 2 years ago (southeastern state) and you can't find it here at all. I can order it to be shipped but that's a pain. Great job and because I love everything apple, except apple jelly😣 (unless I use it to glaze a pastry or salmon😏), I will definitely try this and I'll do the lattice crust.🤗 Thanks for the inspiration. 💞🤗

Hi Twins! You reminded me of a Mock Apple Pie Bars (aka Zucchini) that we made yrs back when there was an abundance of Zucchini. And the truck was to not over cook it. I wasn't Keto then but I bet I could totally Ketofy (pretty sure that's a word now) it?! I'll look for it and forward it to you. Excited to try both versions. Hhhhmmmmnnnnn, Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples, are a lot lower in carbs, with a small/medium coming in at about 15 carbs each.
