Yuup, you're 100% correct about how a lot of Batman fans reacted when Heath was originally announced as the Joker. They just pointed at this film and Brokeback and said the studio had forced the casting to sell tickets to women. A lot of people were fully expecting to HATE Ledger's performance, but then it was so good that almost everyone was instantly won over.

100%. I literally laughed when I found out he was gonna be the Joker. I knew he was a decent actor but thought the role was wayyy out of his league. Soon as I saw a trailer, my doubts were gone and by the time I saw it in theaters, I didn’t want the movie to stop. He was PERFECT.

@@knoxashford9291 The homophobia was even worse back then in the Superhero fan sphere back then than it is now, so that's probably one of the reasons the fanboys weren't happy with Heath as the Joker after watching BM.

Absolutely love this movie. Best 90s romcom. When Patrick didn't kiss Kat in the car, there were two good reasons: 1) she was drunk and 2) he was actively still betraying her trust by accepting money to show her interest. The kiss would have been an abuse of her trust and questionable consent.

some fun facts about this movie bc i love it so damn much…
    1. kat’s big poem at the end is the first and only take they used in the final cut of the movie! it wasn’t even written in the script that kat cries while reading, julia just felt that and did it in the moment. the director even said that as soon as she started crying, he did too, because he was so moved by her acting.
    2. julia also improvised kat’s entire dancing routine on top of the table at the party.
    3. the two writers of the film, karen & kiwi, didn’t know heath was australian when he was cast so they met up with him at a bar to go over some of the lines (to see how they would sound with his accent to see if they needed to change anything around) with him. they all ended up spending like ten hours together because they just had so much fun hanging out with him 🥹
    4. it has never been confirmed if julia and heath dated irl, but she did admit that heath was her first on-screen kiss ever 👀
    5. the choice of the “can’t take my eyes off you” being the song of the musical number was actually picked by heath! karen & kiwi (the two writers of the film) had narrowed it down to “i think i love you” by the partridge family and “i touch myself” by divinyls. but heath came up to them on the first day of filming that scene and said he felt like those songs weren’t romantic enough. they asked if he had any ideas and he brought up “can’t take my eyes off you” and they ended up loving it right away.
    6. the crew didn’t have permission from disney to film the band playing on the roof at the end of the movie, but they did it anyway lol.

    • @adnap
      @adnap Рік тому +11

I’m glad they didn’t go with “I Think I Love You,” because Jerry O’ Connell sang that to Neve Campbell in Scream 2, and it would have been less iconic on both fronts had it gone that way.

"It's not everyday you find a girl who'll flash someone to get you out of detention."
Love this movie. It has some of my favorite actors/actresses and is never cringe. This here is proof that William Shakespeare wrote timeless classics that can be adapted to any setting.
Fun Fact: This was Heath Ledger's first American movie.
One And Done Fact: The scene in which Kat reads the "10 Things" poem was the first and only take, according to the DVD extras. Julia Stiles' tears towards the end of the poem were real and not planned.
Musical Assistance Fact: The marching band in the sequence where Heath Ledger sings to Julia Stiles was not from Stadium High School, where the film was shot. Stadium was approached by the makers of the movie to do the scene, but did not have a marching band. The makers of the movie then contacted Lincoln High School, a nearby Tacoma school, who furnished the marching band depicted in the scene. Several members of the Stadium Band assisted, but had to be taught how to march.

So glad you loved this one, never gets old. Kat's character was an updated version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and it works because they have such strong magnetic chemistry, plus it was such fun. I love Heath's earlier movies especially A Knight's Tale (2001), a rock-n-roll take of medieval times. Blond Heath! As for a Disney movie, "Enchanted" is wonderful with Amy Adams. And "Before Sunrise" (1995) with Ethan Hawke is romance magic.

Aside from not having enough weed, cuss words, gangs, baggy jeans, and a mall this movie is a fair showcase of what high school was like during that time. The dad's worldview was shared by adults over a certain age. Having young-ish teachers like the English teacher made the experience bearable since they were willing to level with you as a person versus treating you like just another problem to be dealt with. I also credit this movie with conferring a sexual connotation onto the phrase "Getting jiggy with it".

The band he “called in a favor” for was Letters to Cleo.
They play at the prom (Cruel To Be Kind, Artist Nick Lowe) and then on the rooftop during the credits. (I Want You To Want Me, Cheap Trick)
Letter To Cleo were popular for their hit song “Here and Now” in 1994. Kay Hanley’s tongue twisting cadence and the song’s Pop Rock catchy feel, made the song quite unique and infectious.
Kay is also known for writing the performed songs for the soundtrack of the Josie and the Pussycats movie in 2001.

There were A LOT of teen romcoms in the late 90s/early 2000s, especially in 1999 (the year this came out) and some are great but this is just top tier.
Another one that I feel like gets slept on a lot is Get Over It. It's a fun one.
Also...the reason all the women at Club Skunk were looking at him (and why he said he can't be seen there) is because it's known mostly as a club that girls/women go to.

90s recommendation: Empire Records. It wasn’t a big hit when it came out (it didn’t flop, it just had no marketing). it became sort of a cult film when it was released on video, cause by that time many of the (mostly) unknown actors in the film got very famous (Renée Zellweger, Liv Tyler, Robin Tunney, to name a few - there will be many other less familiar faces that will make you go “where have I seen them before….?”). I haven’t watched in in years, but it was one of my favourite films when I was a teenager.

This movie was such a vibe in high school. Another Heath gem was The Patriot with Mel Gibson.. it’s a bit long but totally worth it. When he was cast as Joker, I had a flashback to this movie but did also consider The Patriot which was more dramatic for him.. but his Joker portrayal was such a nice surprise. He was fantastic. It’s just tragic that it was part of the reason he left us so young.

This movie is brought to you by the same female comedic team that did Legally Blonde.
As far as the colors, I think the film is supposed to start out with a dull and bland color grading. That way it’s all the more noticeable when they use the colors to convey emotion and the growth of the two sisters as they realize they are more alike than their preconceived notions led them to believe, bringing them closer together in a brighter and warmer canvas.
There are teen comedies, and then there is art. This is the latter.

10TIHAY is my favorite film, not just my favorite RomCom. There's a reason it's listed by so many people as one of the movies that best defines them. I'm not sure if you knew, this movie is based on Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare, all the way down to the character names and plot line. I saw in the comments some people said Kat was based on Taming of the Shrew, but it doesn't stop there. Patrick Verona is Petruchio from Verona in the play. Bianca Stratford is Bianca in the play. In the play, Bianca's father forbids her from marrying before her sister Kat does. The line "I burn, I pine, I perish" spoken by Cameron in the movie is direct from the play, so you can see, there are lots of parallels.

I saw this in the theaters back when I was 14. I had just seen William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" performed at the local college by a Shakespearean troupe and read that the movie was inspired by "The Taming of the Shrew." I left with a massive crush on Heath Ledger.
It's been recommended a lot, but you may like "A Knight's Tale" also featuring Heath Ledger. It's more of an action/buddy comedy and the romance is pretty lackluster, but you can see Alan Tudyk in one of the few roles when he wasn't playing the voice of a Disney animal.

The reason all the girls are looking at him at club Skunk is because there are actually no guys there. So he stands out

Re watchable add to that I also many times she's all that, varsity blues, double add to that a most I watch many times is Can't Hardly Wait is was done so good plus it has many Buffy the Vampire Slayer extras and main leads in it it's my fave extra bonus is Being it On which has a Buffy the Vampire Slayer big bad boss villain in Bring it On
Friday Night Lights too cause I live in Texas and I played high school football we went to state championship game lost on final touchdown our receiver David spiked the ball in celebration super fast that refs ruled incomplete passed when he actually caught it. But it was fun.

I got to say the Stratford dad is unintentionally hilarious all his stupid paranoid b******* is just hilarious my favorite line from him the couple of people have seen react to this never show and I'm like that sucks cuz I really like that line and I wonder how they reacted to it. You're not going out and getting jiggy with some boy I don't care how dope is ride is I put that almost as iconic as Joel the cameraman from scream 2s line 'hold up I don't need to be here in about no dead cameraman Imma go get me some coffee donuts Prozac see if I can find some crack special k x not Malcolm and I'll be back when y'all start talkin about something a little more saved by the Bellish aight'
