After the crumbly MK4 shifter bushings are removed from the shifter stick you can then install the high performance Delrin shifter SHAFT bushings from Dieselgeek. you can get rid of a whole lotta shifter slop in about 10 minutes with the Dieselgeek bushing set.
In my case on my tdi beetle, these 2 shaft bushings were completely gone!! Nothing was even there which is why is was so difficult to go into reverse and get out of reverse. I also replaced the first gear getter and what a difference! The car is shifting like new again! A big thanks to DieselGeek.com and I highly recommend them to anyone with a VW!
Hi I was thinking where you pull out the broken bushing with a screwdriver what about using a Hoover for it making it easier, I have a problem with my Renault Clio here in the UK it goes into gear but then sticks in gear when you are trying to change from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd but mainly it does it as you are turning a corner or going up or down a hill I have no idea thanks for the great video Ian UK
thank u sir. respect from chennai . india. i did it myself.
Just installed mine pretty simple 👍
big difference?
Brilliant video, thank you very much !
Great Video. However, once you cut the clamp where did you find a new clamp for the shift boot?
wow this is so great!!! hey man i have a problem and i'm hoping u can help me. my car was stolen for a joyride and then finally recovered. mk4 jetta vr6 5sp. so when i got the car back, i noticed that the shifter was tilted to the right. i have all 5 gears + reverse, however, going into 1st gear feels like im going into 3rd gear, and 5th gear seems really far away now. i dont notice any additional shifter slop from before my car was stolen, and the car gets into every gear just fine, otherwise.
what could be the problem and how do you think i can attempt to solve this problem and get my shifter to be aligned in the center again? thanks
Thank you for the help and the reply. I have adjusted the shifter cables
Thanks man, u r the master
Hey guys, I have a problem with pushing down on the shifter to get into reverse, would this shaft bushing help with this problem?
after i installed my kit its hard to push down to get into reverse is there any reason for this or should i let it break in over time everything was installed correctly
Having the same issue
Typically this issue is caused by debris or pieces of the original bushings remaining in the stick housing prior to installing our shaft bushing set. Remove the bushings and ensure there isn't anything else in there causing the lower bushing to close down and bind the stick. Compressed air helps.
hmmm, my 01 TDI is kind of trying to stay in reverse. I have to bump it to get it to pop back up. I'll bet this is my problem. 20 years and 297k miles.
I cannot engage into reverse. Will replacing these bushings. Remedy my problem?
Hi, before I install the new bushings, should I spray some grease or oil in the shaft to improve the movement?
Would this still work with a short throw kit already installed? My shaft position is pointing straight up rather than slightly forward like an oem shifter
My bushing is down inside the ball. How do I fix that to put your bushings in?
A pick and/or compressed air will do it. If you're also doing the front to back cable end bushing, you can fully remove the stick and ball from the car and separate. -tyler
Erm, any reason why you didn’t use a vacuum cleaner to remove the bits?
compressed air
I use my hand to form a seal around the shopvac nozzle and open spaces and it helps pull most the crap
Would these work on a mk7 gti?
anywhere i can purchase the stuffing you have in your shifter, my car doesnt have it and i think thats the reason my boot doesnt stay in place. Any suggestions?
Hey I have a problem , first it was hard to get into 5th gear , now I can't get into it at all . Do you think the first gear getter could help ?
This was my problem on my VW. The first gear getter as well as the 2 shaft bushings were completely gone! There was nothing there at all. Bought the replacement bushings from diesel geek here and its shifting like new again. And its very easy to replace yourself.
Link to purchase full bushing replacement?
