  • Hesiod of Ascra's Theogony is central to Greek history, literature and mythology. He is the first poet with a biography (eat your heart out Homer) and a brother (whom he doesn’t really like). He is famous for delineating for the first time the honors, powers and names of the Olympian gods. Did he copy the Enūma Eliš and other famous Akkadian and Hittite/Hurrian texts when he wrote the Theogony? Let's get into it.
Check out these videos which touch on other aspects of Hesiod’s poetry:

It's interesting how so many traditions clash with each other like Hesiodic and Orphic for an example. But after alln polytheistic religions aren't like the monotheistic ones

I think the similarities come the the Proto Indo europeans. Sumerian is starting to look like an indo european Language. At least to a growing numbers of scholars

It's interesting how we hear so much about Homer, and so little about Hesiod. I just learned about Hesiod recently, but I've heard about Homer since I was a kid.
Also, Judaism was greatly influenced by the religions from Mesopotamia, so it doesn't surprise me that Greek mythology would be influenced by them as well.
Would you say that the "Theogony" was the equivalent of the Bible for the ancient Greeks?
    Great video!

I am glad you enjoyed it! Alongside Homer, Hesiod's Theogony can certainly be called the Bible of the ancient Greeks. Because it deals with the birth of the gods and the universe it has a much more overt religious content than Homer. I agree, the links with the Near East are amazing.

Hesiod is often accused of being a misogynist. What do you think of that?

@@Keimelia The story of Pandora is one reason. But also I have seen quotes from Work and Days where he talks about marriage. He advises men to not get married until they are at least 30 and not at all if possible. But he says if you avoid women all together you get to die without a heir and have your relatives pouring over all your property when you die.

I'm curious of any resources that could explicate Plato's experience of Homer and Hesiod? It seems like we're left guessing from parallels to their poetry and the Republic (at least prominently the republic, it seems to share more with the poetry than any other dialogue I've read, re gold/silver/bronze souls/generations, and the parallels in books 2 of republic/iliad). What scholarship for the layman is out there?
