Spring tension is supposed to keep piston rollers from spinning that’s why lubrication is crucial. Water, bad fuel priming or aeration in fuel pump can damage all pump components.
Hey Eddie, I'm your neighbor down the street. We are in Oklahoma right now and our new Ram Rebel with only 8k miles on it just had the CP4 explode on us. The 2021 and 2022 ecodiesels do not have the recall on them yet. However the warranty is covering the repair. Just an FYI to everyone with this fuel pump, you will hear the pump making clicking sounds if it's failing. It will sound just like a ac condenser clicking on and off.
This is why every 3 rd tank i add marvel mystery oil and powerservices fuel treat keeping everything lubricated and 300 k on my 2018 ram And frequent filter changes no issues
I buy a $70k+ truck and find out that they cut costs and purchased cheaper pumps to run fuel. I would have paid $1000-$3000 more if it meant that I got a good pump.
bought a 2020 2500 limited MFR date 7-20. I put Archoil in every tank, I am more than confident with my purchase. I have the CP4.2 new style. I also don't typically go below 1/4 tank of fuel to reduce cavitation. I would pay the dealer for a CP3 though if it was an available option.
I got mine back with the upgraded CP4 after my stock one failed at 10k miles...2 months later the second one failed too!! Hope you have better luck than I.
To ease the anxiety a little, it is not easy for the piston and roller to rotate! Imagine the roller half way up the cam contour then, in order to rotate, one side of the roller will have to roll higher up the contour and it is not free to do this because of the spring pressure holding it firmly against the cam. Only, and momentarily, when the roller is precisely at the top or the bottom of the cam will it be technically free to rotate - providing a force exists and it happens instantaneously before the roller starts its next ascent or descent. This is not a realistic scenario. I would guess that if a pump ends up with its roller skewed by 90 degrees it's because other failures have preceded it, such as debris jamming or giving rise to friction in the piston walls and the piston therefore losing engagement with the cam. The problems many of you guys are experiencing in the USA I believe have been caused to a great extent by fuel quality issues. I drive a Macan S Diesel in the UK and there are very few problems reported with these pumps. They are also widely used in many vehicles worldwide in CP4.1 and 4.2 form and, again very few failures reported. However, I can totally understand the concerns, even misery, of many of your viewers trying to resolve matters which ought to be resolved by manufacturers. Nice video with good clear pictures of internal parts. Thanks
Great explanation of the piston and roller dynamics in relation to the cam. I had been trying to visualize the engineering dynamics in my mind and knew it had to be something like as you described. For the most part all I kept running across were videos of individuals expressing the incredulity of an engineered part that functions against the logical mind. It makes total sence now. It is unfortunate there has been so much grief caused due to an engineering that has zero tolerance for subtle anomalies.
While I agree with both of y’all’s analogy… In 2020 the CP4 pump for the Ford Powerstroke got screw in alignment dowels for both pistons. Obviously to prevent rotate. I wonder why though.
I heard about hundreds of bmw and vw equipped with CP4.1 and CP4.2 failed in Europe... Many of them were using premium fuel, but it didn't prevent the failure at all. So it has nothing to do with the fuel quality unfortunatelly...
There is no evidence that the updated cam version of the CP4 is any less of a POS than the older style. The design is fundamentally flawed. You made the right move. My '19 is stock, and I don't want to hose my warranty.
How many miles were on that pump? I have a duramax with 200,000. On it. I was amazed how clean your pump was. Seemed fine to me. Thinking of swaping tho the cp3. Iv been traveling around the US pulling a 5th wheel camper. This is the only thing I think about on the long drive. Having my cp4 fail 18 hours from home.
Bucket can rotate in the bore, it does not do that very often. The reason I think, is the spring keeps pressure on the bucket. And the roller as it interfaces with the shaft cam wants to naturally align as it comes together to push the bucket up. What happens is score or wear forms on the roller-cam, one side or the other. That produces a side vector force and one side of the bucket roller drags compared to other side and it twists out of alignment. Of course then, it can wear a flat spot in the roller and cam and it never goes back aligned right again, and it disintegrates. It is a very poor design for sure.
My truck would drag that truck up and down the road. Hands down smoke it in a race. It’s proven those trucks do not like added power, there trans suck even the almighty aisin, Eddie himself says his trans doesn’t like it. Better get rid of that before more money is wasted.
I have had issues with both my bmws with the cp4 pumps. On my 2009 E88 120d I fitted a 2018 cp4 pump with has a screw in the back of the pump which will prevent piston/cam roller rotation.
I found that B47 engines are equipped with updated pumps from year 2017 onwards. But need to fit the pump head from an old one to fit it on N47 engine. HP fuel outlet is on the opposite side...
I have a 13 Powerstroke. My pump was upgraded under warranty back in 2016. Ford starting using an updated version in 15 MY trucks. I didn't have the pump out, but was able to see "Bosch 4050" stamped on the back side. Do you think this means I have the updated one? Every pic of a 11-14 pump I could find has "Bosch 4000" stamped and 15+ have 4050.
The CP4 is the best of the best. They fail because of water and lubricity. The issue is the water!!!!! Long live CP four and the best throttle response and economical fuel delivery !!!!

Has anybody ever provided with a definition for diesel fuel lubricity beyond just the words? what is the causal mechanism for poor diesel fuel lubricity?
It's not true that there is nothing that prevents the roller from spinning: Maybe difficult to understand, but as long as the roller is pressed down to the cam, the cam itself prevents the roller from spinnng. For sake of accurancy: there are two positions of the cam where spinning isn't prevented:these are the most "upper" position of the cam and the lowest position. But these are very short periods compared to the whole revolution of the camshaft.
@@EddieLife3500 yes, i've seen such cases too, but that can't be the primary fault, because the roller cannot spin, as long it is in contact with the cam. So i assume this: the (cylindrical) "roller housing" gets stuck somewhere near the head and THEN it can spin. My pump is a 2015 and it has 6 small dimples and 1 large one.
