A compilation of analogue BBC channels being closed and replaced with digital channels.

- Between 2007 and 2012, all BBC channels turned off their analogue signals due to digital TV services like Freeview being made. Sorry that I spelled "analogue" wrong the whole video by the way.

I like how positive the BBC One Wales one is. Instead of being like "GO TO YOU DIGITAL NOW", it's more like "Hey, we get to be all digital now! So, if you wanna keep watching, just switch up to your digital and you'll be set! Have a wonderful day!"
Yeah, but there is that poignancy as well, especially when he bids farewell to analogue television.
@@sleepytyphlosion5660 True. And now i know a new word! Poignancy. Fun.
whoever says "GO TO YOUR DIGITAL NOW" probably will make people instead go to cable services
@@Crabtic LTG if he had a TV station
no its “YOU SHOULD SWITCH TO DIGITAL NOW!! ⚡️⚡️”
i love how the bbc wales transitions from a regular broadcast into a weirdly down-to-earth message about the switch
It felt very Welsh to me
That’s just what we do for things ☝️
And a Earth shrinking
We're a bit like that about a lot of things here.
it felt like they were going to shoot everyone who worked on the analogue signalling or something
The BBC One Wales send off was actually kind of a tear jerker. Having the original logo slowly leave and fade away before being gone forever

NOOO NOT TOP GEAR

@@MrSupercar55 I heard it was about the producer getting way out of pocket with dangerous stunts?

the bbc one wales one was actually so sad for no reason
i guess the old logo slowly zooming out did it to that
When the last shot of analogue in that area is the silent, monochrome globe quietly fading into the darkness, it would do that to you.

3:30 there is something kind of poetic about that being the last commercial for BBC2 wenvoe. The man on the treadmill, representing the channel itself, stepping off of the treadmill after 43 long years, catching its breath. He freezes as Joe Esposito sings Wenvoe’s praise for a final moment, and just like that, it’s gone.
Wow i didnt realise
Wait that is not intentional?
Nice Easter Egg / Coincidence Right There Joseph

There is something so saddening with these signoffs. This was really the end of an era for all the engineers and employees at these stations.
At 1:41, that's "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons - a song about leaving behind your old ways and embracing a new, better self. Oddly fitting.
I remember watching a BBC channel just as it turned off the analogue transmission. As soon as the accouncement finished, it went to an advert for a David Attenborough documentary, he said "it's time" and it cut off straight after that.
Lol
fitting!
They must’ve planned that.

Imao
They expected the shutdown of BBC in analogue.
the way the people who put the plug out for the bbc analog signal was great and they did it at the right time
@hhhHHH-zj9yrim assuming he’s talking about the one that said “there are people watching as well what do they expect-“
that TV is probably used to test the status of the different lines but in this case it was used to time the detaching of the plug things
@@midnightthefairy8747 that "one that said" is jeremy clarkson, one of 3 hosts of classic british television show top gear.
what hes acutally talking aboit is.. well, the people pulling the plugs out at 20:42
@@midnightthefairy8747no, I think he's referencing the moment when the engineers physically put the plug out (at the end of the video), making sure it wouldn't interrupt the previous program!
Removing the "U Links" cuts the video feed to the transmitter and therefore it automatically goes off air.
BBC One Northern Ireland was the most graceful shutdown (22:08). Clear information on the switchover with nice nostalgic graphics afterwards commemorating the history.
Happy monster band
I love when the stations do that, if it’s an end of an era you gotta do it right
That, and they had a crossover with UTV covering the history of BBC. Since Northern Ireland was the last of the UK to do the digital switch
Now that's what i call "Going out with a bang" :)
I love how most of these goodbye scenes after movies contain a heartwarming message of the team of people at BBC, but in Disney Channel and other Disney analogue channels, they were like, disappears (except the Japanese Disney XD)
Edit: Wow, many likes :)
my favourite closures are the London ones, where they commemorate the channel's life and its accomplishments before giving a final "this is BBC 1/2."
When disney and fox went off cable in my country, it's like it happened in the blink of an eye without any notice. The fox ones were replaced by local placeholder channels.
Wtf
Damn
@redacted3191 Actually why some shut downs has a robot with creepy eyes but the first one reminds me of an British girl working in airport and there is an announcement
@@lucymorrisonI like the wales one cause it's informative
The 1960s BBC Wales logo decreasing in size as it gets shut down is a tearjerker moment for some reason
I imagined something much more like the entire transmission system going through a long and complicated shutdown procedure, but they really did just pull the plug. Me being fairly new to telecom hardware, I don't know if said plugs were master signal patches/jumpers, some kind of power connector, or whatever, but it surprises me that removing a tiny piece of metal was all it took to disable analog transmission completely.
they need those connectors put into a museum
They seemed to be high power jumpers. They are thick because they needed to carry hundreds of kilowatts of electricity.

Yay I know us digiAL!
In Australia, the shutdown of analog stations was done after 9am, so during mostly national programming. As such, there were no signoffs like this.
Only Ch7 in Brisbane (BTQ), Sydney (ATN) and down my way in Melbourne (HSV) did a sign off each.
Also, there’s very limited footage of this (I think only one video on UA-cam) but a station that broadcasts in Mildura had a holding screen after 9AM saying a message like “If this is the only signal you can receive you have to upgrade…” or something like that after their analog shutdown, which was very, very early in Australia’s rollout.
I'm not even from the UK but ended up watching the whole video, made me almost nostalgic. The narrator sounded so kind and considerate I wish I actually lived there, very comforting video
Lol as a native English person I can confirm you *don't* want to live here

Interesting to see all of the build up and thinking about how creepy it seems when really it's just pulling 2 fuses out
The transition for BBC from analogue to digital was pulled off (as far as i can tell) really well, at least compared to here in Canada. Here, the transition to digital was *optional* and til this day we have a mix of both analogue and digital signals. Most of the channels brodcast in my area are actually analogue, and only the CTV brodcast in digital.
Interesting... Why are people still using analogue?
@@cantin8697 Because many of the stations are on analogue. Also most recievers (built into TVs or otherwise) support both anyways
@@stefansuch1588oh thought that was permanent due to the commericals i saw on yt (i’m 🇺🇸and sad btw)
So is that why in apartment buildings in canada that have guest rooms still have analog tvs
It was not "optional" in Canada. Stations that met any of the 3 criteria were required to switch to digital: in a national/provincial capital, markets served by multiple originating stations, and markets with populations greater than 300,000. The analog stations remaining were only in very small markets, and there's only 21 left. This was similar as the US, where low-power analog TV stations existed until late 2021.
10:28 i guess we’ll never know what makes a house home 😔

“For detail-“ *Immediately shuts off*
"But that's for digital viewers only" favorite part of BBC1WA shutdown.
7:42 imagine watching news about bodies being found in texas at 22 minutes past midnight and then your tv suddenly cuts to static, and nothing you do can bring it back

Honestly, there is a really creepy vibe about The Cave by Mumford and Sons playing on that old TV, with that low video quality and being stacked with others, and soon after it goes static. Also considering how dark the background is.
Squidward: I thought I was going to get jumpscared
The Cave has always been very comforting for me so it actually broke up the creepy vibe to me
Foxy (You know, that guy from FNAF): NYAAARRR, THAT BE IT, I'M COMING FOR YOU! *Foxy's dum dum dum song starts playing as he comes for you*
I remember the BBC2 NI shutdown, my parents were very stubborn and did not want to get a digital TV. They thought it somehow wouldn't effect them haha. When it went off after the announcement, it sunk in they must buy a new TV.
Freeview box...
@@RWL2012Satellite?
and cab-le too.
digital converter box.
This is why old technology stays: people are too stubborn to change their technology
I remember seeing one of these analogue blackouts on BBC one when I was younger. For some reason my parents let me stay up so I could see it happen. I remember once the final switch announcement came and went, our TV cut to a static screen and even though I knew it was coming it still made me jump😅 the next day my parents went out and brought a new TV (we didn't know freeview boxes were a thing at the time). Good Times
It is worth noting that Northern Ireland was the last region to shutdown, with RTE in the Irish Repbulic going the following morning. I have all the closedowns from that night available if you need copies. Also the full version of The Magic Box (the last programme put out by both BBC and UTV) in HD taken from a "hidden" satellite feed.
Please post that to your channel
I would be interested in seeing it.
please do!
The RTÉ Analogue Closedown is slightly hilarious
This i remember well
(spoiler alert but really it wasn't fantastic)
i think they had the whole thing shown on the Six One and it was literally the pressing of a button and that was it. the Technicians who yoinked out the Analog switches in this vid were more enthusiastic than the RTE demonstration
of course with the death of Analog happening all at once here, meant the death of Aertel, pretty much the "Irish Ceefax". i'm glad to catch the tail end of Analog as a kid, having to fiddle with antennae to get a clear signal and being soomewhat creeped out late at night over simple alerts warning of Engineering work at some transmitters...simple times
17:55 It was about to say it’s switch to digital, but it was cut off just before they could explain the entire switch.
They pulled it out a bit too quick.
You're wrong, it said "BBC Action Line"
@@DejeanCauchi Yeah, they maybe could've let that run on for a few more seconds. Someone might've needed the Action Line's help with whatever the program before was about, especially if it was something depressing or triggering
@@Leah96xxx YOU REALLY THINK YOU CAN TAG ME? IT SAID "BBC Action Line" AND NOT "Digital Switchover is happening"

Like Jeremy Clarkson Said: "There are actually people watching as well. What Do they expect" Good word's to end the transmission 🙏
Wtf???
Why the hell is this making me feel emotional? Like I was like not born yet to maybe 4 years old when these went out and I'm not from the UK.

Going digital killed terrestrial TV where I life. First they introduced DVB-T, which was ok. Only a few years later they switched from DVB-T to DVB-T2, which was not backwards compatible. You also need to pay for most channels. Nobody uses that anymore. The great thing about analog is that everyone has the hardware to recieve it for free. If you need a new special reciever every 5 years and pay for it every month, why bother with antenna TV at all? Just watch a online stream. Same is happening right now with FM radio. They are trying (and failing) to push digital radio for years now. The only good thing about FM radio is that there are recievers literally everywhere. Every car, every mobile phone has a FM radio reciever. Everyone has like 5 things at home that can get FM radio. Nobody wants to go out and buy a special reciever that becomes obsolete in 5 years just to get radio.
It’s kind sad knowing that in 4 years from now satellite tv will be obsolete. I’ve grown up with satellite tv (since 2006) with my dads freesat that he’s had since 2005. It still works fine after 18 years of constant use every day since 05. I’ll be 20 the day satellite tv goes away forever and that makes me sad.
Will it? Why..?

this very video got me into analog tv shutdowns, and im kinda proud of it

Thank you for this of course. Interesting to see the different versions in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales so too. Yes I know it is Northern Ireland of course, but I am sure viewers in the Republic there see it too no doubt. Also of course, this was BBC1 and BBC2 at the time. Although not here, I am sure that the other channels-ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, S4C and STV did the same thing too. Also aside from the British ones, I know the Irish ones did much the same around then too-RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4 so too. I remember seeing a video a few years ago where they did theirs in 2012 at the same time as in NI.
Of course it was a shame that it meant the loss of Ceefax pages in my view, and I guess of others so then too!
All analog services in the Republic closed the day after Ulster became Digital.

Honestly it makes sense that the bbc 2 ending speech is on the credits, its like the credits to the tv, and then the after credits scene
5:48 - This isn't actually correct, far from it. BBC One dates back to the mid-30s though for nearly 40 years (1963-2002), the channel used the globe as it's identity.
The particular example shown here being the iconic 'Noddy' model (used from the beginning of colour transmission in the late-60s up to February 1985, though this specific version with the twin-striped BBC text is from the 80s)
Sadly, I don't actually remember the globe because I was born roughly 8 months after the "Rhythm and Movement" set got introduced but I have watched a lot of old BBC One continuity videos from 1969-2002 on UA-cam so I am aware.
This was before I knew all the ins and outs of television lol

There are lots of videos talking about TV station hijacking.. during the analog days
Plus, analog would made it easier to hijack the signal, since.. it's on a raw form.. so, pirated stations can start broadcasting on the same frequency, and easily, overlap/hijack the signal.
