I’ve always wanted to make a worm that is literally a worm, and I want to name it Wormagotchi. It would just place an executable file on your desktop that would be a tamagotchi but a worm. And have a button with on it that uninstalls the worm, places the Wormagotchi data in a zip in an app data file, then leaves a folder on the desktop with a .txt with the worm saying goodbye to the user in it, and a .png that’s a screenshot of your desktop but with the worm sleeping in the foreground.
If you got reinfected, the data would be retrieved, and a pop up saying something along the lines of “worm has returned from its trip!” would appear when launching the file explorer.

No but grandma’s computer is probably the most likely target of everyday users. If they’re targeting everyday people it’s people who are more likely to be gullible/forgetful/confused by technology/etc, things that are much more likely in older people. Maybe 6 years ago or so my grandma managed to get ransomware on her computer, and despite my dad’s best efforts to help, she just permanently lost a bunch of files and it was a really upsetting experience for my entire family. And then a few years later, maybe 2019 or 2020, my grandma on the other side of the family fell for some scam where she let people have remote access to her computer, and in that case it scared her so bad she literally refuses to use a computer again, and we honestly don’t know the state of that computer were it to be turned back on. Elderly people really are the target audience for scammers who are trying to go for everyday people as opposed to larger entities

In my opinion, coding or anything related to a computer was a really obscure niche in the 90s.
And much like the pilots in WW1, the computer enthusiasts/malware makers acted much more civil to eachother because the activity they were partaking in was so niche that every fellow nerds/pilots is a potential best pal. Plus, it takes skills to achive such feats -> they made it into a sport where sportmanship was encouraged.
Nowadays, as hacking and coding have become more mainstream than ever, combined with our society's shift to materialism, hacking has become nothing more than a fluke, sadly.

I made a trojan once, specifically for Windows 2000 and WinNT. Didn't do much, all it did was copy itself to your startup folder, play Dogsong from Undertale, and repeatedly pop up error messages that say "GET DUNKED ON!". It was super easy to write (written in C++ using the SDL and Windows libraries, and used a lot of SYSTEM commands to copy itself over to the startup folder, the whole thing was probably 30 lines or so), and super easy to remove (remove it from the startup folder). But it was just silly fun. If I were to actually "distribute" it (wouldn't work on modern computers anyway, it was written for Windows NT file structures) I would have hosted the audio file remotely and had the program download it first, but there's no point in doing that.

This video explains a lot. Back in 2016, The meme Trojan was installed on a school computer that was assigned to an Autistic Kid named Brian at the time. And instead of booting up, it would play an 8-bit version of Nyan Cat VERY LOUDLY and it scared him each time. It was a mean joke and we never found out who did it, but I was fascinated by how it just kept appearing with each boot up.

While it's not really malware one unique piece of software is Suicide Linux which will delete itself if you make a mistake in the command line.

I remember randomly getting malware way back in the day when people still used Skype to some degree (though it was its last couple of years for me). The thing changed the wallpaper of the Skype app, adding grocery cart silhouettes in various pastel colors patterned all over..? I don’t know it was really weird and a really long time ago.

Malware used to be fun. Malware used to not just destroy your files, it also used to do cool things like make your icons run away or pop up a funny message. Nowadays it's all "give me your money or your files are locked forever."

I get nervous just downloading minecraft shaders from the official modding sites. The thought of losing my computer or files scares me so much.
