- Throughout his career, Michael’s constant companion, workhorse, canvas and muse has been a 1959 Stratocaster® affectionately called “Coma.” Michael found the Coma at a local L.A. guitar shop when he was 16. The refinished body and swapped-out pickups gave him all the permission he needed to customize the instrument throughout his career to match his evolving style. The distinctive Coma Red finish and permanent marker “Coma” graphic make it unmistakable, and the guitar has had several different incarnations over the years, hosting a wide variety of pickups, electronics, hardware configurations and bridges.
The version of Coma recreated in the Fender® Stories collection represents the guitar as it exists now. Electronics include custom-designed ML Ultra Noiseless Strat® neck-and-middle pickups and a custom Wide Range humbucking pickup in the bridge position. Hardware includes a 6-screw vintage-style Stratocaster tremolo with a cold-rolled steel block, a custom ML-spec neck, Fender ClassicGear™ tuning machines and the signature faded red satin lacquer body complete with a Floyd Rose® route. The Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster wears its rich history on full display, truly representing a vital artist that’s always in transition. Included in the custom Coma-embroidered hardshell case are a “Coma” sticker set, custom strap and a Coma booklet written by Michael himself.

Michael Landau is one of the greatest guitarist ever 😊
He is very good indeed. I would be thrilled to have just a fraction of his talent. This Fender guitar however really doesn't impress me that much. I believe that any guitar that is built to decent standards is just as good as any other. What matters most is the skill and proficiency of person holding the guitar. Sure some guitars might be prettier or weigh differently than others, but at the end of the day, it is the player who creates the magic.

In 1985 was stationed in Tx NAS DAllas My roomie worked for Grumman n could afford the good stuff .. ( I got a Flyg V body n neck :) ) He got a NECK THRU KOA STRAT ( $@ $600 even bk then!) n put EMGS onit OMGAH KILER guitar NOW I can imagine this guitar in neck thru double truss rod, etc w/SAME spec..OMGAH.........................

I'm building my own version. Lucked upon a Fender Elite neck with pitch black Ebony slab, bone nut, and locking tuners for $350. Pearly Gates HB + 2 Squier AlNiCoV Ceramics. Silver Glitter FSR Squier body and full-sized block trem . . . controls all new CTS and S-1 switch. Total cost, minus mint original Squier Indonesia neck, about $600 . . . a little better than $3000 USD! Of course, any good vintage Fender single-coils can come later, for about $150. If the guitar sings, got a super-light 1-piece body blank sitting on a shelf for years, just waiting for the right project.
