Cool video! You played some fascinating chords at the beginning, and great to hear you improvising along to the track! I saw Landau once, with a group called the Ringers - Landau, Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, with Keith Carlock on drums, I think the bassist may have been Etienne Mbappe (who plays with gloves on!). Amazing show, they did a fantastic version of Worried Life Blues. All 3 guitarists were mind-blowing. You would’ve fit right in!
Just saw Landau with James Taylor last Wednesday night and after his solo on Steam Roller Blues I told my wife we just heard one of the best guitarists ever. I remember his name being on so many albums over the years but to finally see him cut loose live….we were just blown away.
A few years ago I was at a Michael Landau concert. I stood in the first row right in front of the stage and kept looking at his fingers. I had never seen him on stage up to that point. After playing his last encore, he walked straight up to me, shook my hand and left the stage. It was an unexpected but very nice surprise and somehow I felt even more connected to this guitarist from then on than before.
One of my all time favorite instrumental guitar tracks. I remember when my guitar teacher (Berklee) played me this track in the tiny little practice room at school. We actually sat there and listened to the entire album for the entire duration of what was supposed to be a half hour lesson. I was speechless, blown away by how creative and unique the sound of this album was. At the time that he made TFTB, he was playing on some of Joni Mitchell's most artistically adventurous albums and he created similar sounds, especially his clean tones and volume swells with delays/ambience, which is something he is really the master of. You can hear the Jeff Beck influence on Michael Landau but there is so much further nuance in what he's doing that would take millions of close listens and a sampler to catch. Shawn, your playing has a similar liquid quality to Landau's and that's what caught my ear initially and turned me on to your work. All of which is brilliant. Mike Landau has been a major influence on me as well; more from his sonic approach and the way he creates a mood with guitars; beautifully crafted, expressive layered guitar arrangements.
That was the first thing I ever heard from him and I was and still am a huge fan. Saw him a few weeks ago in Austin and Eric Johnson and David Grissom were there to catch him.. same thing about 10 years ago
Definitely one of my top 3 influences, too. He truly does just keep getting better and better, which is so inspiring. He's like if Hendrix had lived long enough to play with Miles Davis and fall in love with Nirvana.
Yeah man, beautiful stuff, beautiful tone, and Landau is the shit, I'm a HUGE fan !!! If ever, he plays on my last album, the song named "Every Time You Go Away", so proud and happy to have him on one of my project, he's a hero of mine, and I'm "just" a drummer. 🙂
I honestly expected a bit of a more in-depth analysis but it still gave me ideas and made me want to pick up the guitar and jam to this, so thanks for that!
The Raging Honkies has arguably some of the greatest strat tones on it, in my opinion. Incredible stuff. The intro of this solo reminds me of Ed. They grew up drinking the same water so it’s no surprise.
Thank you for posting. Michael is my favorite guitarist of all time. I have seen him many times over the past 20 years and have spoken with a few times. Really nice guy. Seeing him in his 2nd home at the BP is one of the best things you’ll ever experience.
What amazed me about that song is you get this kinda/sorta dirty single coily sound for the main riff and when it goes to the pristine clean tone effected sound it really blew my mind. A very orchestrated sound. I also find that it's one of the rare "guitar instrumental" records that can be enjoyed by people who don't play guitar. Despite the fact that it's really cool from a guitar player standpoint, he really created an accessible set of tunes where you don't necessarily need a degree in musical physics to understand it.
Nice choice Mr. Tubbs, For those not familiar you can catch him playing this song live at several venues on You Tube , live his switching between dirty raw tones and clean tones is just so musical and impressive. also interesting how he, like you, takes so many influences and make them his own. For him I hear Beck and Hendrix influences the most , building on those adding to his very unique style. IMO he is a tone master, love watching how he is constantly moving tone volume and pick up positions in the midst of a song..perfecting the sound. Love your playing/videos thanks for sharing.
great video! I was lucky enough to see ML for the first time on the Joni Mitchell tour . . . maybe 1984?? I was like, who's that? I also picked up Fee Waybill - Read My Lips around that time, my lord, been a huge fan ever since. Big fan of Shawn Tubbs too!! great player
Hi Shawn. First - to answer your question - oh yes, I definitely like those kind of material! And I wrote it under another Video from you: I love your approach so much. Not aiming for the exact tone, but take the inspiration and just give it a go...Playing along is always helpful to strengthen your musicality and skills. Don't try to end as a copy cat. Thumbs up for sharing your thoughts, Shawn. Best greetings. Michael.
Great vid! Saw him twice with James Taylor and he's amazing at sounding like a pedal steel player too. He always gets to cut loose on at least one song in the show and never fails to sound/play on a very high level.
Awesome Shaun, I'm so not surprised he's an influence of yours, so strong in your playing I hear it well... I got the original Tales CD in 1991 way back, being also just a huge huge fan, and much like upon hearing Eruption for the first time, I'm Buzzed affected me the very same, maybe even hit me harder. The finest iconical rack tones in that day on that record IMHO. Abbandanato not far behind. Kudos bro.
Hey Shawn. I had a feeling that you were going to cover a Landau tune once your Tilt pedal came out. Thanks for covering probably my favourite Landau tune. I still love the clean chorus melody part. Dated or not, it still sounds killer. Once again, your playing over this tune is soooo damn good! Cheers Shawn.👍👍👍
Saw Landau at the Baked Potato three years ago, he AND his band just kicked ass. MLs phrasing is emotive and original and a chapter to study for every player.
Shawn, thank you for this. I didn't know about Raging Honkies, Liquid Quartet, or Burning Waters. Totally agree... I want to hear what Michael plays when it's HIS album or band. Some of his live work is an amazing cross between Hendrix and Jeff Beck... YOWZA. If anyone knows how to source Burning Waters recordings, please post. Indeed, hard to find.
Hey Shawn, really cool tune ! Drop D ? I see you play your Suhr HSS: which one you like better between this one and the Tyler...? (I guess it depends on the moment...)😉 Cheers
Did Landau tune down on this song? I’ve had “Tales” for many, many years, but have a hard time deciphering his guitar parts! Saw him at the Baked Potato Club, and he was amazing! He also explained his whole rig to me that night. Really nice guy!
ML tuned his guitar down a half-step except for the low e which was tuned down another whole step. From high to low: Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Db. Hope this helps!
Sounds creepy but….I’ve been watching you for a long time. You’re on my watch list. 😎Don’t trip as I watch all the bad slingers…all the time. Thanks Shawn.
Always loved Michael’s music but this was always my favorite. Such cool riffs, runs, and phrases! I finally was able to purchase a Tilt and it has supplanted 2 of my favorites. :). Thanks for it!!! Lastly- what humbucker do you have in that beautiful Suhr? Sounds awesome!

I've seen that very performance of "Worried Life Blues". It's insane!! Thanks so much for watching and for chiming in!
Good God! What a lineup. Herring is a monster.

So good! Shawn makes it look so easy.
Ah, thanks so much Marc!!

Yep, the RH stuff is killer! Thanks for watching Chris!
Very true. I can listen to it over and over again. The strat tone is mind bending. The whole attitude of the RH stuff is just different.
Thank you for posting. Michael is my favorite guitarist of all time. I have seen him many times over the past 20 years and have spoken with a few times. Really nice guy. Seeing him in his 2nd home at the BP is one of the best things you’ll ever experience.
I’ve been trying but he has nt posted any new dates

Great lesson on how you process the concepts and ideas of the song. congrats man
I love this tune.. the start of the lead break is in my top 10 favorites!
Yeah it's top shelf for sure! Thanks for watching!

Great stuff Shawn. There are so many interesting aspects of how he pulls strings with subtle use of the wammy bar. That chorus is killer.
Happy to getcha’ out there in the wingdinger, Mr. Tubbs.
My biggest influence in the last 30+ years... Bravo!

I dig this type of video. Like a short guitar hang.. 🤌
Thanks so much!!
I love this! Thanks guys
Very inspiring.
Thanks so much!
Saw Landau at the Baked Potato three years ago, he AND his band just kicked ass. MLs phrasing is emotive and original and a chapter to study for every player.
That might be his best attic is phrasing. And that’s hard to teach /learn
Is it hard to see people like him there. From memory seems small.
Amazing!!!!!!!!

Fantastic video and great playing. What effects are you running, love that fuzzy / distorted tone
Thanks very much. I used my Revv Tilt OD , Strymon Timeline and Blue Sky into my Suhr Bella.
I'll ask Shawn but I believe it's an SSV. Great pickup.
@@RevvAmps thank you. And thanks for the awesome Tilt!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you're happy with the Tilt! That humbucker is a Suhr SSV.
"Way back in the 90's..." WUT? I think it was the 90's when I went to sleep last night! 🙂
Anatomy of tone(or a riff ) with Dr. Tubbs
Thanks for watching and for comment!! Hope you're doing well!
Yeah, Landau is God! Love his playing, tone, attitude...
Drop C# here? That's what Im feeling it out to be.
Hi Shawn😀
Hey!
New Suhr?!
But how is the guitar granted?
Hey hey 🤘
Hey Andy!
Hey Shawn this sounds like jeff beck in a way from wired record ,yeah i am old lol😆
Beck’s touring his latest release right now. Great stuff.
The Wired record is so great!!
No vibrato?
Tales From The Tubbs
His tone on that track sounds like he's trying to sound like Phil Keaggy from those days.
Hmmm... I can hear a bit of that. Good ears!
The narcismn is all over the world…. The won’t end good…….
Great video but Please stop screwing with your hair!!!
But how is the guitar granted?
