At 5:24 you are at the intersection of Bradley St & Golden Star Ave in Riverside, CA. I've driven through nearby Woodcrest on the way to Riverside National Cemetery where my parents are buried.
A most impressive drive! A beautiful van! Thank you for your technical info narration, seems like a very fun van to drive, with some oomph. Thanks for the inspiration!
I can understand you're proud of your baby. And I've owned, even rebuilt a couple vw engines in my day. In 1966 I had a split window rag top sunroof van. But I have to chuckle at your response's as if you're driving a 427 Cobra. But you did put a lot of hard work it to it.
Thanks for your videos. I have a 67 that Im going to have benco build a trans for. I have a 2276 turbo but I think I am going to build a "thick wall" smaller displacement motor with aa heads and small cam. Forged pistons. That bus runs well. Cars have a "soul" and some run great and some never run great. Thats a good one..
Love it! I had a '67 Camper back in the day... I put a 2110 in it.... Incredible transformation. I wish I dealt with the reduction gears and transmission to get the real road performance you've achieved.
I built a 3.88 R&P, .77 4th, big nut GRB's, Rhino case and all the goodies that go with that.. I have stock bus 1-3, but I like your 3.44 combo & smooth 1-4! Engine sounds great!
Thank you much for letting us ride along. My 66 double cab NEVER ran like that. Now, I miss it and wish I could do it over. LOL. It looks like you folks have a lot of sand on your roads. Am I seeing this right? If so, you folks are a very far cry from what we have here in Kentucky.
Sounds strong and the video speaks for itself, Mike. Would love to build an engine with you and learn. I’ve done plenty of top Eng rebuilds, but never split a case. Perhaps I could do a Working holiday over in California 😂 I had Steve Houston in Chico Build me a 1914cc motor about ten years ago and ship it over to the UK. Still going strong, but I’d like to stroke it. Defo some of the most technically interesting videos on UA-cam by any aircooled enthusiast are coming from you mike. Keep them coming. Ben 🇬🇧
@@Mikefngarage thanks I'd like to rebuild my stock 75 engine or purchase a practice engine to rebuild...haven't done an engine build for about 30 years
@@GeorgeMummertdotcom check my playlists. I have 3 of them 74 stroker, extreme budget build, bulletproof engine build. If you watch all 3 plus have a manual I think you can muster your way thought the build. be sure the case is good. The prices of parts are a bit high. So I wouldnt recommend doing a practice build it can cost some serious money.
That motor would really run well in a Bug. Today i am going to fire my 1970 single port 1600 Bus motor in my Baja for the first time. I hope it runs like that one......
Been geeking out on the build video's and I watched the 2007cc bullet proof first drive video before this one. You were like...it's cool and it moves, but you seemed kinda meh...it's a bullet proof build..it's what I expected. Then you get into the 74 stroker and were really pumped. I think I'll go with the 74 for my build. It would be nice to see a rolling pull to 70mph between the two buses as a comparison.
small difference in power but 74 gets 22mpg with that smaller carb. 2007 gets less than 20. 2007 is built to last long miles. 1904 may not last as long but still will last pretty long.
I guess I’m going to have to look into the trans gearing. I had a buddy build a ‘cb’ 78x90.5 for me and it is unimpressive with my current setup other than sounding great. I want to keep my rb’s. I’m running Vredestein 205-70/15s though for the stock height.
you could go 1968 which is a 74 stroker. Big flange exhaust extractor. But the issue is you will not have full horsepower for the engine size. Stock valves would be the key. I could have run this with heater boxes but engine runs cooler and better with merged exhaust. Better exhaust flow. I am making my own heater boxes that clam on the exhaust. they dont work as well. but do work on a long trip. Also they make heater boxes that are oversized. 1.5 inch. and an exhaust system for that. Super expensive route and not as good heat as original. Again they do not flow as good as the merged. I ran an 1835 for many years without merged and had heater boxes. But the flange would get WHITE. from the heat. if you go with the larger flange exhaust it will help.
say mike... pull the idle jet and figure out what size it is.. find some bigger idle jets and start swapping up one size at a time .. you will have to readjust the idle mixture possibly each time but that should only take you seconds to do. you won't believe how different the idle will be and the low end power will be totally different.. once you get the idle jet changed.. since you increased the displacement you need to go to larger main jet one size at a time. do the idle jet first.. once you get that perfect.. then start playing with the main jet sizing. .
yea they are expensive. So most trans shops use 3.88 with 82 which is similar but not near as nice. freeway gears are about the same but 123 are much more drivable with gear reduction boxes
it already had that cam in it. Bought a locked up engine and the bottom end was brand new. got lucky. so all I had was some single port stuff so I put new pistons and cyls on it. Just ran the cam because it was new and had matching lifters. not for performance. would probably need 10 to 1 compression for that cam to work well.
Just finished same build except for c25 scat cam and dual 36 dellorto going in bay window . Darn ! should have watched your build series first .I Didn't loctite the freaking hex screw plug on my crankshaft . Gotta cross my fingers on this one .
Do you have stock BIG NUT reduction boxes on this bus? You should pick up one of the performance apps for your phone. It will allow you to get real numbers to compare setups.
It would be convenient to use the gps of the cell phone to know the real speed, those speedometers of 50 years of use are not very reliable. I would like you to leave in the description of the video more details of your gearbox and the engine irons at the beginning of the video your engine is very dark and not even the carburetors are appreciated, thank you.
Your 74 stroker videos help me build one with the 74 crank. I have to say I absolutely enjoy pulling hils in my baja with that motor.

that thing screws along nice
Besides all your excellent engine build work, I like the bus. Very cool.

Always learning , thanks Mike for gear talk
gear reduction big nut 1.26 to 1.
Really nice looking bus Mike👍
Oh my god, that is a beautiful vehicle! Engine looks amazing. My 63 Beetle still has the original 1200.

that 1 2 3 shift is just like a bug.
My 1st is wicked short, like an old 80's K-5 granny gear.
Nice! That baby moves! =)
really gets up. Gears and engine feel like your driving a bug.
That new motor seems to push that old bus with ease.
I would love to have a motor like that for my baja some day.
Gearing matched to power band and targeted speed range matters 👍
Nice
Absolutely

Do you have any videos on the actual build.
yes on the video and engine. playlist 74 stroker.

What is the biggest displacement I can go to and keep my heater boxes?

@@lestersart5834 yea for sure if you can get a good stock crank. if you need to buy a counterweight Then go 74 stroker.
Did you eliminate the reduction boxes?
say mike... pull the idle jet and figure out what size it is.. find some bigger idle jets and start swapping up one size at a time .. you will have to readjust the idle mixture possibly each time but that should only take you seconds to do. you won't believe how different the idle will be and the low end power will be totally different.. once you get the idle jet changed.. since you increased the displacement you need to go to larger main jet one size at a time. do the idle jet first.. once you get that perfect.. then start playing with the main jet sizing. .
Vroom vroom! Nice!
I love this bus
One more question, did you do anything with the reduction boxes?
Just getting into VW’s. Do the buses require a transporter engine?
starting at 68 they need mustache bar holes in the case. 73 and later need type 4 or type 1 conversion kit.
I miss the sound of a vw something you don't hear much anymore...( child of the mid 70's- 94)...😁
Mike - On the gearing you mentioned, 3.44 gear ratio / .89 fourth / 3.85/1 final drive - can it be applied to 15" wheels?
Very nice.
now this made me decide which motor to build, so its a 74 stroke with 88 thick walls
that would be a good one but it is 74 x 90.5 with that carb and the web 86 cam and ratio rockers it is a great combination.
@@Mikefngarage is it ok to use 90.5 barrels on the thicker engine studs, that is my reasoning why i'm going with the 88 thickwalls
Nice, she sounds like a motorcycle. Quick as well
pulls hard
Nice!
at about 1:25 are you saying you have a 3.44 ring and pinion? i knew these existed but never seen one on youtube

U ever build a turbo engine?
no only my friends did back in the early days. Really expensive if you want it to be fast. turbo diesel though Rabbit engines.
That thing is FAST! I can only go 28 miles per hour when I’m shifting into 4th. If it’s yours , where did you get that engine from?
Yeah very receptive

yea big nut 3.44 gears and bug 4th .89 instead of .82. gears are like 4.12 bug. Makes it much more fun to drive
Sounds good and looks good Is this one of your one restoration projects?? I am just wondering.regards from HCS Norway.
