Danny is known as “the octopus” for a reason. You just witnessed a genius at work. Fun fact, Danny played drums on some of Carol King’s work before Tool. He’s one of the best to ever sit behind a kit, right up there with Neil Peart (RIP) from Rush. I’ve seen Tool live a half dozen times, and it was mind blowing every time.
Tool should be required listening/viewing for every musician even if they don't like Tool. They are the perfect example of a band that listens to each other and not a click track, backing tracks etc. If you watch carefully, you will see how Danny reacts to what is happening with either the guitar or bass part in various sections of this piece. The other members are listening to Danny. There is a part where he hits the snare twice in a section and the bass/guitar immediately transition into the next part of the song. When watching them you will see the winks and nods between all of them for the musical queues to structure the journey they take you on.
Thank you for the response. Tool is a throwback to the days when bands knew the songs and each other. They would look to each other for the queues rather than sheet music and conductor, or sorts, or just taking the studio experience onto a live stage. Personally, I can't play to a click. My Metronome is in my head, Every now and again the musical choice might be to play a little ahead or behind the beat. The click makes it more sterile. Perfection in musical performance isn't always the goal. Expression, feeling and emotion work better for me and my taste. Another great example of the musical interchange between musician, melody, rhythm and not being afraid to leave space in a composition is Weather Report.
2:10 - No clicks. It's for the Mandala drums, you can see the "Mandala v.3" text on the front panel. And mandala drums are those electric pad's he's using (the one's with the star on them). They have 255 individually programmable zones.. Crazy things. :) ** EDIT ** Not idividually programmable ZONES, but 128 detection rings and 127 levels of velocity sensitivity.
@@ThomFoolery1 Sorry! I lied. They "only" have 128 detection rings and can detect 127 different strike velocity. o_O *whoopsie* Should have checked. Still they are crazy things and Danny Carey has been involved with their developement. :)
It's a bloody Eurorack/Analogue synth maodules. Maybe someone with an entire house full of the things and 30 years of their life to waste can create some descent tracks 🤣but I was dissapointed when Danny used it on tour, no disrespect to enthusiasts, but...
@@iisotter8944 Tool uses specific and oftentimes modified equipment to get a specific sound from their instruments. Especially in concert since there isnt any post production mastering involved as is done in studio versions. If Danny were to use anything else it would simply sound sub-par from what fans expect to hear. You've got to respect that Danny takes the time to make the adjustments to his equipment personally before each song, and not leaving it to a stage tech.
@@FuhQH8Me4Lyfe I know that, but to his left ontop of his trigger modules there is a Eurorack/Analogue synth rack. That is the one with all the wires and lights. I have had alot of modular synths myself, that's how I know how difficult and time consuming they are too sound good. On the last tour of the UK Danny did about a 15 min solo. This is when he used the Eurorack as a backing percussion track. Just wished he had not used it, the bloody thing sounded awful, and I think it would have been a banging drum solo without it, a sentiment shared by myself a drummer, and the other 3 drummers I was with. Being a Tool fan since 92 mate, Danny is a genius on the drums, not trying to take anything away from the brilliance.
Let us not forget Danny was 59 years old here!! More Tool soon please, love your reaction/insight on their music. Pure genius level musicians plain and simple!
Ah ,you found that magic section were Danny shines ,a lot of people miss it an dont realize how many different pads he is hitting ,its so fast that you lose count!..😂 Awesome reaction!..🤘👍
Alot of people react to Sober (live) which shows the band when they were alot younger & Maynard's amazing vocals & theatrics which really raises the song to another level
Danny Carey "We were actually playing live. It's a sad thing when almost every band you see isn't playing doing that, it's the clicks and backing tracks that are keeping time. I've never played to a click on stage in my life..."
Those are mandala electronic pads. You were right. You can have any sound you want, 3 different sounds per pad that you can preprogram and change with the touch of a button.
I never ever get tired of watching Danny work his magic. He is just amazing! So excited to see them again this October! 😊 I enjoyed watching your reaction. More Tool please!
Danny lately was asked to point the most difficult song to play out. He's choice was Invincible, from the last album, Fear Inaculum. Check it out, you won't be disappointed
no click or backing track actually, they play in free tempo, both live and on record ! all that stuff is for the sample triggers / fx. the percussion in the intro is samples trigged from a custom pad.
😀 Doug Helvering tried to catch the paddle going on in Pneuma. He concludes on 2 measures of 6/8 1 measure of 5/8 1 measure of 6/8 2 measures of 5/8 For a 33/8 notes. And i thing he's damn right, because everytime i tried to catch the rythm i end up completely lost! Awesome reaction, as always. Can't wait to catch you on your next Tool reaction (maybe try "Invincible"!), or maybe a little come back to Heilung? ;-) Take care
3:20. Just so you know, if they don’t do exactly what is on the label track live, it was a colossal mistake, or it was an artistic turn, that they will announce before they do it!🍀🌼🍄
Ah I love a great drum playthrough Thom, and this was exquisite all the way 🤘 I mean you know how I love to see Evgeny or Austin beat up their kits, but Danny is just not from this planet it seems... Like you said, pure virtuosity. Thanks for this one! Later kerel 🤘
So relaxed and the dynamics are incredible. He did screw up just a bit there before those last fills (i think) but it makes him human and i love that. Top 3 favorite drummer for me. Others are Kai Hahto and Baard Kolstaad.
He actually didnt screw up there. Another pro drummer reacted to this and said sometimes a drummer gets caught wanting to double up a strike and will sometimes check themselves on beat. Thats the hesitation you saw. He never went off time.
I see copy cats play Danny. That is awesome! but then you have to ask did you invent it? All good to copy but inventing and playing it, different level
It's not often that we get to witness geniuses.
I'm so, so grateful that I got to see Tool play last fall, and to play Pneuma.

Richie Gajate Garcia is known as "El Pulpo", the octopus. He is a famous percussionist who has been a big influence for me personally.

No clicks, no backing tracks. It's all Danny
100% all natural rhythym from the octopus armed master of polyrhythmic paradiddles 🤘

@@iisotter8944 right on, no derision intended my friend 🤘
Danny's drumsticks look like hummingbird wings in his hands. ✌️
My favorite part is when Danny smiles knowing that he killed it.

I’d like to see a brain scan on Danny during the center part… then a brain scan on literally any other drummer playing any other song
He'll break the scan
Danny's click is ADAM JONES
Reactors: "Nice layering on the precision in the mix!"
Danny: "What's Layering? "

Trance portal, trance engaging, transport…..I agree!🌿🌸

Three Aliens and an Octopus walk onto the stage....and then there was TOOL
I wouldn't be surprised if everyone found out Danny was an alien from another galaxy.
Those are mandala electronic pads. You were right. You can have any sound you want, 3 different sounds per pad that you can preprogram and change with the touch of a button.
Glad you got to know the song first.😊
Danny is the click
I never ever get tired of watching Danny work his magic. He is just amazing! So excited to see them again this October! 😊
I enjoyed watching your reaction. More Tool please!
Bravo!
Very cool honest reaction. Masterful performance from the octopus, greetings from Chile South America brother!
Great reaction. That electronic pad at the beginning is called a Mandala pad.
🤯 🤘🏻🌀
I get chills EVERYTIME I watch this video? 😁🤘❤️🎼
most of the equipment is for the electronic mandala drums and for EQ, and other synth sounds
I really liked your reaction..
I just saw them this past May and he's truly amazing. Working on going to see them again in September 😊
Danny lately was asked to point the most difficult song to play out. He's choice was Invincible, from the last album, Fear Inaculum. Check it out, you won't be disappointed
He actually said "The Grudge" endurance wise, and mentioned "Invincible" and "Tempest" because he's "not as used to playing them".
no click or backing track actually, they play in free tempo, both live and on record !
all that stuff is for the sample triggers / fx.
the percussion in the intro is samples trigged from a custom pad.
By far the best song performance they are currently doing
😀
Doug Helvering tried to catch the paddle going on in Pneuma.
He concludes on
2 measures of 6/8
1 measure of 5/8

Cheers Maxime! Yeah I didn't even try to comprehend the rhythms in this one. Too much for my tiny brain. 😂
Danny made a deal with the devil to learn to play drums. Nobody is sure what Danny got in return.
🤣🤣👏👏
Clicks and backing tracks don't exist with Danny that's all him brother
Yes, you gotta go to a gig...

Danny DOES NOT USE click tracks. That's an insult sir!! Lol
That’s how you burn off 24 cheeseburgers in about 9 minutes!!
So relaxed and the dynamics are incredible. He did screw up just a bit there before those last fills (i think) but it makes him human and i love that. Top 3 favorite drummer for me. Others are Kai Hahto and Baard Kolstaad.
Just about after he lost concentration and smiled right?
@@jimmyg.6487 yes, right there.. and then just ripped through those fills, like "I'll show them" 😁

Like the guy below me said, no, click tracks. They go off each other's visual cues when playing Live.
Dude is like 60 years old here! ….that is all 😎

The instrument behind him is a Marimba. I believe it's a Buchla Lumina.
Cool! Thanks
time signature and polyrythm....
