    Edit: he did notice 😊

I'm 65 yo, have been a drummer/percussionist for about 60 of those years. (I started very young) Prog rock has been one of my favorite genres throughout the years because the experimentation and divergent themes these bands play with expand the overall musical horizon. and ultimately many musicians to follow. Tool is unlike any other group I have ever heard. There are so many things happening all at once. Composition, arrangements, sound quality, the mix/master are stunning. What really grabs me is the ability that all of the complexity come together with odd time signatures, meter subdivisions and dynamic changes all come together in such an enjoyable way. Once you try to figure it all out from an intellectual perspective my recommendation is to just sit back, have a listen and enjoy the ride........ and don't forget to breathe once in a while ....... (There should be a warning label on each song.....breathing is required so try not to hold your breath while anticipating the next stop on the journey each song takes you on.)

Welcome to the club mate... Tool is rock/metal 2.0.
This song gives me chills even after listening to it hundreds of times... Especially the last 3 minutes... Now do Vicarious, or Right in two, or Parabol/Parabola, or Invincible, or whatever, doesn't matter to be honest... they are all great!

Tool The Grudge is a excellent next step in your Tool journey. But I also have a new band for you to check out. Jinjer is a Ukrainian progressive metal band now they go a bit heavier than Tool. But they do share an affinity to play with time signatures. The general introduction is their song Pisces the live session but one of my favorite songs off of their latest album is Vortex.

Tool Army Here, I am 68 years old and have been a Tool fan since the 90s Lateralus is my favorite next to (46 and 2) if you haven't reacted to this song yet it's time you did, it's amazing as well. Enjoy!!!!!!

i don't think anyone coming to enjoy someone else loving what they love would fault you for being hypnotized by a hypnotic song. to someone like myself, that's excellent. though who knows if I'm like most ppl here.
thx man. good luck to you.
also with the part you were talking about the bassline being different with the drums, i think you might be talking about the polyrhythm. kinda like gears of varying teeth, they'll start at a point, but won't meet back up at that point for several rotations (or in this case, measures). This is displayed well in much of Meshuggah's music. Not everyone's kinda music, but it's my fav. I remember first listening and bobbing my head, like this doesn't feel right, but you keep your head bobbing to the basic 4/4, and then it resolves, and repeats, and personally I think it's so enjoyable that it's become like comfort food.
idk if any of that made sense.
here's a decent example, and one of my favorite tracks: ua-cam.com/video/4A_tSyJBsRQ/v-deo.html
    you take care

Great Reaction! To me this is Tool's masterpiece. I am a father of 2 children and the intro always reminded me of hearing their heartbeats through the sonogram so I imagine that would be similar to what a fetus hears while in the mother's womb. It pairs well with the first line as Maynard states "black and white are all I see in my infancy" after being born. It then continues through the stages of life and becoming over stimulated with what is experienced in daily life, trying to find out where we fit. We over think and over analyze the Ego to fit in the mold we create for ourselves which restricts us and we tend to lose out on what life really is about, being in the moment and embracing the random and living life. This song along with 46 and 2 are my top 2 favorite songs by Tool and I highly recommend checking that one out if you want another slow spiral song to deep dive into and get clinical with. Cheers and look forward to more Tool reactions.

Great reaction of my favorite band! I really appreciate the in depth analysis you've done here. Looking forward to seeing you do more Tool. They have so many great songs. Here's a few suggestions:
    1. Forty Six and Two
    2. Parabol/Parabola (2 songs but must listen to both. Parabol is an intro there's a cool transition into Parabola)
    3. The Grudge (awesome 23 second Maynard yell)
    4. Third Eye
    5. Pneuma (do the studio version first then watch the live drum cam by Vic Firth to see Danny Carey in action. He's just amazing to watch!)
    6. Right in Two
.....I can go on and on. All their songs are great.☺️

As everyone will likely tell you, this song is made up of many elements of the Fibonacci Sequence including the precise syllablization of the opening lyrics (1+1, 1+2, 3+2, 5+3, etc as far as the syllables in each word go). The song is basically built on this sequence which in nature and math ends up forming the shape of a spiral. So cool. The time signatures also add up to various Fibonacci Sequence numbers, their crafting of this whole song is pretty impressive imo. Ha, obviously I typed this at the start of listening to your reaction and you've already covered my lame explanation so just ignore this!! Love your observations btw!

As you noticed, first the hi-hat, and then the snare drift backward in the pattern by a beat every cycle. That's one of the better examples in this song of ways they are intentionally subverting expectations, while telling you to let go of your expectations, and embrace whatever comes. Lateralus is like a final exam for Tool fans. 'Can you let go, and embrace the beauty' I've found personally, if you think of Maynard's vocals as the center of the landscape, it's less jarring than trying to focus on that hi-hat for instance.

I truly appreciate the time and effort you have put into this analysis Thomas, certain artists such as Tool, Ayreon and Nightwish (along with many prog bands) will have enough artistry to require this level of treatment.

A sort of epiphany. Lol. TOOL. A TOOL for your own introspection, and the evolution from where you were, to where you're going. You'll understand. I can tell. Love this format BTW. Subscribed for TOOL!

The people who genuinely enjoy it have the best reaction. That’s almost the only factor for me. Your doing great and I can tell you’re about to do a deep dive here. Their time changes are so hard to grasp on the first listen, but it’s one of the best parts about tool. You get to spend years now trying to figure out exactly what’s going on. Lateralus is one of the more interesting songs as far as time changes go. The main chorus is three bars consisting of of a sequence of 9/8 8/8 and 7/8. The verse is in 5/8. The bridge when they slow down again, the guitar plays 4/4 over the bass playing 6/8 over the drums playing in 5/8 for an epic polyrhythm. And the lyrics represented Fibonacci sequence in the verses as well. The sum is the root of the preceding 2 digits. Listen to his syllables and you’ll find 1 1 12 123 12345 12345678 12345 123. Sorry this is so long and for needing out. You just seem like the type to appreciate this

There are many, many great Songs by Tool, so its hard to recommend just a few and whichever you choose, as you said, will be a great experience.
    I would like to recommend:
Vicarious (heavier piece, the one that made me fall in Love with Tool)
Pneuma, Danney Carey live Video (Tool rather has a lead drummer and this famous video shows why)
    Schism (amazing bass line Intro)

From what I remember from different interviews I've watched was they were arranging the music for the song that became lateralus and they counted the riff and it was 987, which are Fibonacci numbers. So it happened by accident. They didn't go into writing this song with a plan to use Fibonacci numbers. IIRC

If great music is the attempt to sonically create a temporary reality that you the listener can inhabit and explore, then Tool are one of the undisputed masters of this. Their soundscape is so incredibly crafted that you almost cant help but get pulled into a journey and experience that is part them and part you. Third Eye off Aenima is another one of their soundscape masterpieces.

What an awesome reaction! I love that you really get in there with the song and go for the ride! That part of the song at 16:40 in your video, is one of my all time favorite Tool moments. They move Maynard way back into the belly of the mix and if you’re really absorbed in the song it feels like you’re being swallowed up right along with him. The instruments seem to wrap around you and it is one of the more physically effective production decisions I’ve ever experienced. Then the whole thing spits you out in that final crescendo at the end of the song. Truly one of the greatest songs of all time.

The one thing that still blows my mind is about that very first line.
    "Black
    And
    White are
    All I see
    In my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be
    Reaching out to me
    Let's me see"
    William Gladstone...
    Tl:dr
He noted that until about 1500 BC humans didn't recognise 'Blue' until someone in ancient Egypt created a new pigment, and it needed to be named.
But when he started out with figuring it out, he noted the distribution of named colours was the same the world over.
In order from highest number of mentions, the list is Black, white then red, and yellow is just slightly more than green.
The idea of that line is that it's talking about how humans as a species saw the world around them in the infancy of our ability to perceive our environment can shift and change with more abilities to understand and comprehend new ideas, and how it relates to the rest of the track.

22:05 - Most definately yes! Not that you have tipped your toe into the vast pool of Tool, I would recommend that you go back to the beginning, the first EP from '92. :)
All of them are available from their official channel.
And so that you would not get fully lost to Tool, have you heard of "Porcupine Tree" and "Haken"? :)
If not, sprinkle some of them amongst your analysis/reactions.
With PT, live performances should be favourited, they are so amazing live, here's an example from 2005, Hatesong: ua-cam.com/video/O5nAA_QXBPY/v-deo.html
And as of Haken (rhymes with bacon), a different one from their (arguably) best album "The Mountain", song "Cockroach King": ua-cam.com/video/x7wwYmgQAmY/v-deo.html

Are those DT 770 Pros? What OHM do you use and why? Also, thank you! I love this reaction. This is my favorite song by any artist.

Thanks! They are the 250 ohm model. They sound very nice! I sometimes wish I had the open back versions but the sound isolation is worth it for me. 🙂

I love the fact that you dont stop the music constantly.. although you did pause it at the peak. dont pause at all save it for after and the second half.

Lateral meaning look at things from all sides from below, above, front, left, right , back and beyond to bring in new perspective to challenge our previous knowledge and sharpen our mind to make the pieces fit and keep growing. Spiral out not in.

Start at the beginning. You are missing out on the ALBUM EXPERIENCE. These are CONCEPT Albums. Segues, Interludes, Backward Messages, Hidden Tracks, Album Art, you won't EXPERIENCE it if you listen to INDIVIDUAL TRACKS randomly OUT OF ORDER. You are also missing out on hearing the BANDS PROGRESSION into PROG ROCK GODS! Just my two cents worth. 🤞✌

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate all of that. Unfortunately I just don't have the time to make full album reactions. I will 100% go back and listen to the albums properly at some point. 🙂

IT SPIRALS 🌍 OUT Like my basketball 🏀 on my finger as I spin it West to East and move my arm in a circular motion as if it's orbiting around the 🌞 sun as it slips off it's axis every ice age because we are falling out of orbit around the sun! And we need to build a ship out of the Earth NOT to fly away but to KEEP orbiting around the sun in a controlled orbit that doesn't have our axis shift and causes another ice age! I need to talk to Einstein about it! But that's going to be pretty hard to do!

Hey Thomas! How about getting Rammstein back on the channel? Try reacting to anything from their most recent albums, Zeit and (untitled) Rammstein...I suggest Radio, Deutschland, Angst, Zeit and Zick Zack

Here is a short video of Danny playing in a studio the last part of the song where you said you liked his playing during the solo. It's cool to see how aggressive his playing is.
