  • There’s a rumor going around that young people these days just don't care about privacy. Highlighting the various ways privacy issues arise in the lives of young people - using social media apps and emerging technologies, in relationships with parents, schools and employers, and making everyday and important personal decisions, Dellinger contends that young people care about privacy more than we (and even they) think. In a world of big data, pervasive surveillance tech, and rapidly changing norms, shifting our perspective to better understand what privacy actually is - an ongoing and fundamental negotiation of power - reveals its value to society and frames privacy as a collective action problem that young people can help address. Gen Z has skin in the game. Jolynn Dellinger is a Senior Lecturing Fellow at Duke Law School and also at the Duke Initiative for Science and Society where she works in the area of privacy, ethics and technology. At the law school, Dellinger teaches Privacy Law and Policy and a seminar about privacy and surveillance in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022). She is a co-founder of Data Privacy Day, a globally recognized event designed to raise awareness about privacy and create mechanisms for dialogue, education, collaboration, and privacy solutions among nonprofits, academics, businesses and government entities. She has worked in the privacy area since 2007. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
