    Artificial intelligence in star trek is both incredibly rare and hard to create, and also extremely easy to accidentally create with a few words to the holodeck computer or leaving a few minor nanites alone in a lab for a while.

      it's also becoming a seemingly unintentional flaw written into the federation that they are usually pretty horrible in the treatment of it outside the moral paragons who push back against their efforts (usually). Granted the series Picard's handling of it isn't exactly stellar, but the narrative thread has been there especially in TNG and Voyager.

      @@benjaminbierley2074 it's probably because the real world problems these stories are based on, assorted bigotries and systemic biases towards marginalized groups, haven't changed. Also there's the fact that star trek has always been a balance between artists and writers who want to say something meaningful about these issues and portray them in a sophisticated and nuanced light and studio execs too afraid of offending conservatives and dropping ratings to push the envelope of public acceptability, like how Roddenberry and most of the cast had to fight tooth and nail to get the first inter racial kiss broadcast in that one episode but were never able to get a gay couple featured in TNG despite constantly promising it because of that one asshole writer whose name I keep forgetting. It's all a back and forth between progressive creative types and money/ratings concerned corporate types. got to be profitable to get it on air after all. Also sometimes they just have bad writers for various other reasons.

    • @FiltyIncognito
      @FiltyIncognito 3 роки тому +1

      Do you think that the Universal Translators of their age are just a vocal English to X dictionary or something?
      Given how many languages it can translate across all kinds of different races, it's likely built to break down input into a form more easily translated before being reconstituted into the output language, and as science advanced there are likely many well established methods that have gone into automating the understanding of a new language, all put into the translator. And as advanced their computers and techs/engis are, it would take very little work to take the data from scanning the nanites and send it to the translator.
      Of all the means available to them, using a device to do what it's suppose to really isn't that big a stretch.
      What IS a stretch is how accurate the translations are. But that'd just introduce all kinds of tedious sidetracking and what would become meaningless drama after the first instance of translation accidents causing wars.
      Also, Data sure as hell isn't going to go into the details of his projects. Even if the crew let it slide (which they rarely if ever do), the show's decision makers sure as hell won't.

    • @Firstsurugi
      @Firstsurugi 3 роки тому +1

      @@FiltyIncognito I didn't read all that. You know what the Heisenberg compensator does? It allows transporter technology to disassemble a trillion trillion TRILLION molecules to their component fundamental energy particles, shoot them a thousand miles at the speed of light, then faithfully reconstructs them exactly as they were. With our current computational technology, we'd need to build a string of supercomputers from here to the sun AND BACK just to stand any chance of creating a successful matter transporter.
      And we honestly don't get so much as a handwave to explain how that shit works.

      @@MrPr1nglz officially yet, but let's face it, starfleet of that era was a bit delusional in that regard when they believed themselves to not be a military, a delusion that was swiftly forced into reality during the dominion war. But even buying into the premises that it was solely designed for diplomacy and exploration, how much crazy and/or dangerous stuff did they encounter on those exploration missions?

    • @MrPr1nglz

      @@89Keith For plot obviously because without a jack of all trades starship as the protagonists vessel, it would be kinda hard to come up with engaging stories that captivate the audience. Granted, there were plenty of fillers including the Sherlock Holmes episodes but in the end, people just want to see stuff blown up.
      The federation was obviously no stranger to war but they also precluded themselves as peacemakers which means their military might was minimal at best. The whole premise of the series was centered around exploration and not active war unless the plot required it and even then they tiptoed until much later seasons.

    When Picard's ship is at stake, he doesn't fool around! He tells it like it is! This episode titled "Evolution," explores that possibility of micro-machines capable of sentience and/or intelligence. Wesley's experiments with the "nanites" soon got out of control, and thanks to the narrow-minded Stubbs, who destroyed the nanites, reacted by "attacking" the Enterprise. Stubbs's line, "You can't have a civilization of computer chips!" only emphasizes Stubbs' ignorance of their current dilemma. In galactic space, ANYTHING is possible, including a budding community of sentient micro-computer chips!
