We’re exactly the same age and I have a sense of guilt that you don’t get to keep doing the things you love and being the warm and selfless person in this world. For people who never met you have travelled in my thoughts countless times, I pray for your family and friends to navigate their loss of you.

    Good morning Melanie. I have been making your brilliant Box Pouches now for a few years, for my friends and family.
    I watched your Cancer update and it brought me to tears.
    I think that you are a lovely person and have sent you some healing thoughts and prayers, with a smile added. I am a 60+ year old man from England and am amazed at your strength and your will to be happy. Brilliant! You inspire me as always - guess what I'll be making this morning?
    Yep, a box pouch (for Christmas, for my daughter's friend). I'll let you know how I get on...

    This is the best video on this subject I could find on UA-cam. I did however decide to use one long piece (18"x 13") for the outer fabric and one piece for the lining. I wasn't really crazy about the seam down the middle of the inside or outside. other than that, great video!

    I made this with a decorative placemat. I know that sounds weird but if you like to upcycle or are short on time it is a great alternative. The place that has a decorative side on the outside and a solid color on the inside. It is stiff enough that you don't have to do anything with interfacing. all you need is a place mat about 14x19 and a 14 inch zipper. there is no needing to sew a bottom seam all you need to do is bring the opposite end around to make your tube, and follow these directions from there.

    Hi Melanie~I have done about 5 bags using your tutorial and made my daughters really happy. So, THANK YOU very much! I most proud and excited on the one I just finished. I added some quilt lines in white thread and some decorative leaves in copper. I also took it a couple steps further by making one side of the tab normal size (per your video) but the other side a tab size to hold and carry the bag. (since I wasn't boxing the bottom of this particular bag) I also added white bias tape to the inside seams which REALLY dressed it up. This bag is for my mother in law who hates me so I'm trying to win over her good graces! lol (not really but sort of) This bag should get me in good. Thank you for all you do for us!

    Very nice "box pouch" tutorial....wonderful craftsmanship and attention to detail (sooooo much better than another vid on same subject that I just saw this evening...OMG). Love the use of the "walking foot" on this application...and THANKS for demonstrating the fusible interfacing CORRECTLY (there are far too many videos showing the iron gliding back and forth...exactly what you DON'T want to do!!!). Only suggestion: I would not choose a "water soluble" pen for the markings on the corners of the bag....any amount of moisture may cause that color to bleed onto the fabric (and that may happen as well if the bag is washed). My preference would be for tailor's chalk or permanent ink markers...in either event I would cut on the inside of the ink line so that the line is detached anyway (along with all concerns LOL). Absolutely love your videos....very well presented...professional tone and presentation. Thanks for your work. ~~ RED ☮♡♫

    Thank you for this tutorial! I made two of these and after the first one I decided to change the way the lining is sewn in according to the video. I think the seams on the inside need to be tucked in facing the other way, so that it looks neater, more professional looking and finished. So at the part where you saw the bottom of the bag together, I did not include the liner. Instead, I sewed the liner the other way and put the liner in afterwards, on the bottom so it would look neat and finished and cover up the inner seams. But thanks great video otherwise!

      Instead of zig-zagging the seam edges, I pressed them open and sewed a strip of matching fabric over the exposed seams. It looks pretty good, but your idea is better.

    • @mbaines95
      @mbaines95 6 років тому +2

      I think what she is saying is that she didn't sew outside and and the liner layers together. Instead i think she sewed the outside layer then she tucked the raw edges of the liner inward and straight stitched the seam shut so that the raw edges would not be visible.

    A tip for you.... baste the tabs very close to the edge of the fabric. Then when you stitch the side seam your tab will stay perfectly aligned every time. The key is to have your basting stitch inside the 1/2 inch seam so it will not be seen.

      I use a quilting ruler and a rotary cutter - for projects I make frequently, I invest in a clear plexiglas cutting template. For example, I make cat hammocks for our local shelter. I have an 18" clear template for the fiberfill lining and a 19" template for the 19" outside fabric. When I use these templates to rotary-cut the pieces so precisely, sewing results in a perfect item every time.

    I made one of these I cut my fabric to 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" and my box pouch came out to be 6 1/2" long x 4" wide not very big at all but nice and very easy hers was 13 1/2" x 9 1/2", so the one she has in her hand at begging of video had to be made a lot bigger than the measurements she gave? But I will be making a few for Christmas gifts for the men in my family, in camo

      Patty Ison I was wondering about that too. What was the depth of the pouch you did at 14.5x10.5? I am planning to make a dozen of these as a gift and good I ran into your comment before I bought the materials. I have to get a longer zipper then if I want a larger pouch than your output at 6.5x4"? Thanks!

    • @pattyison6883
      @pattyison6883 7 років тому +4

      It was approximately 3" deep, well I wanted to make these and give them out for Christmas but they we're to small, so the next one I made I used a whole fat quarter and it's perfect, it came out 12" long 6" wide and 4" deep perfect for travelers or truckers,, I wish I could send you a pic but I'm not sure how? Hope this helps

    Almost 3 1/2 years after this was posted- I made one last night and another tonight. The first was to the exact dimensions and came out fine, but I wanted to be able to pack my hair and body wash container in it, and it was just a tad snug. I simply added 2 inches to make the 13 inch side 15, but 14 would have done it. Everything else was the same dimensions given and it came out great! Read some posts saying directions were not clear---and I disagree- they were fine, but it was my head that was off- in other words, I had difficulty with the concept of some of the steps, but after repeated watching and then doing- it wasn't the instructions at all- just took me time to understand--both demonstration and verbal instructions were dead on- thanks Melanie!

    Melanie, I started sewing a few months ago to learn how to make hammocks and tarps for hiking in the Smokies. You videos have been very helpful for a beginner. You make it simple to learn. I have made your Kleenex holder and several makeup bags. I am going to make this square bag in camo for Christmas. I let you know if it was a hit with my sons and son in laws! Thanks for you help and videos!

    Thank you so much for your tutorial. I haven't started yet but now I know what to do without spending a lot of time trying to figure things out. Your video is so clear, unlike another video I found with horrible music I had to mute. Talking us through what you are doing is so much more helpful!

    Ooh ooh!!! A great tip I just taught myself as to turning that pull tab inside out...stick a DARNING needle thru n hook on inside about a third or half the way n pull thru!! I tried pulling the whole tab thru at once but works better n faster doing halves or thirds at a time!! Love this tut Melanie...thank you!

    Absolutely amazing tutorial! This is my very 1st sewing project! My mother taught me to sew when I was younger, but I never had the patience to really try to make anything myself. This step-by-step was so awesome, I finished the bag and I almost couldn't believe that it actually looked just like the one you made!! :) So proud right now. Thank you!!! You rock!!!
