Thank you for keeping her tutorials on here for us. I saved this video years ago and it has been helpful for me recently. Inflation is high, cost of living is tough, living paycheck to paycheck. I’m making these out of recycled denim (old pants from thrift stores). These are great unisex for toiletries and provide me with extra income for buying groceries & other necessities for my family. I was so sad when she passed away. She has left a legacy for so many of us. RIP Melanie, thank you for your tutorials. 🙏🏽 🕊️
Sometimes Melanie’s videos just pop up on my UA-cam feed. I always stop and watch them. She had a gift for being able to explain things clearly and concisely. I am deeply grateful to her family for allowing us to continue to learn from dear Melanie.
Missing your tutorials, Melanie. Thank you for sharing your talents and beautiful personality. We will miss you. But I know you're finally at peace in the arms of the Lord.
I have been sewing for over 30 years, and within a few minutes of skimming through this video I have already picked up some great tips. Melanie was a natural teacher and her enthusiasm infectious. Rest in peace angel xx

To the family of Melaine. I’m new at sewing. , my mom used to sew all the time as I was growing up. When I was in Boy Scouts, my mom taught me how to sew all of my badges on my uniform and sash. Never did I think I would ever be able to make what Melanie taught me online via her videos. Thank you to all the family for allowing all of us beginners the opportunity, to learning, beginning, sewing from Melanie videos. My thoughts and prayers are with the all of family.
I appreciate that this channel is loved by so many. I made the envelope pillow slip way back when. My mom told me of her passing. I decided I always wanted to make this box pouch and made one today on my birthday. Thank you to the family that continues on run this channel
I watched this video 3-4 times before diving into the project, not realizing until about the third watch, that she had fought cancer. Well I just finished the bag and I’m so so pleased with it. I cannot wait to make more. Thank you Melanie for leaving us with some amazing videos. Your legacy will live on forever.
I have watched this video about 20 times. I keep making mistakes but I love this video. I did not know of Melanie's passing. She had a beautiful personality. My condolences to the family. Please keep her videos here and going.

I have learned so many sewing projects from Melanie. Today I was rewatching one of her videos and just happened to scroll down and saw that she passed away. I was shocked and then I followed the links to watch her documentary. I sat for an hour or more watching her journey and crying. She is still such a blessing to anyone who views her videos and I too thank you for allowing her instructional videos to continue because I know she put so much time, effort and love into them! My heart is broken for your loss.
I was looking for videos on a boxed bag, when I came across this beautiful woman's video. It hurts my heart to see that she is no longer with us. I thank her family for allowing her legacy to continue here.

Reading the comments i now realize that Melanie is no longer with us 😢😢😢😢. I tried so many other tutorials and it didn't work for me. Today i tried this version for the first time and it is just what i was hoping for and now i cant say thank you to the person who shared her knowledge with us. Thank you to everyone who is responsible for leaving her tutorials up to benifit others ❤❤❤
I just found her channel trying to learn how to sew😞 I did not know she passed away until I saw the previous comment on this video. Wow! She was so talented. Thank you for keeping her channel up.
Amazing!! Such an easy tutorial to follow and, as a novice to sewing, allowed me to make something I didn’t know I could on the sewing machine. Thank you!!
Sending love and peace. Deepest condolences. I was looking for a tutorial for this pattern and came across this. Melanie was a talent and know she has brought joy to us. Her memory lives on and I hope you keep these youtube videos available. It's a great resource and it's part of her legacy.
Melanie, you are so missed. Such an amazing, gifted teacher. I come back to this channel often to see her bright, beautiful smile and learn once again from the best of the best. ❤
I wanted a tutorial on how to make a makeup bag that fit my wedding theme for my bridesmaids, and your video was the first that made sense for someone who has to buy a sewing machine to even do this project. I hope your memory blesses those who knew you every day, and thank you for teaching me how to make such effortlessly beautiful items.
I've always made bags, but never a box one so was looking and Melanie popped up. I knew about her from other craft blogs, but decided to watch hers. So glad I did. She was a great teacher, and beautiful person that you can tell from her tutorials. Blessings to her family always. Glad the family decided to leave her channel up so we could still visit her. Hopefully, UA-cam never takes them down. You are missed.
I started quilting again after not working on it for five or six years. We just moved to Paraguay and being away from my sewing friends at home I found Melanie's tutorials. I really love them - she explains everything well and she also makes sure that you know what to look for and how to relax when it comes to being perfect at quilting. Yesterday I watched the film her husband made about her story and her passing. She was so brave and so strong - what a wonderful person. I will enjoy all her videos and can't wait to start quilting again for real. Thank you so much for continuing this channel.
Melanie was such an excellent teacher. Her videos were always so instructive. Thank you so much for keeping her posts going. I pray for you all as a family while I watch her. Bless you.
Needed a tutorial for a zippered bag. Knew just who would have one. Such a thorough tutorial and excellent explanations. Thank you for keeping this channel up in her absence. She is missed. ❤️
I always come back to this tutorial, I’m making a makeup bag for my sister’s birthday. Melanie you had such a gift & you have left such an impact on this world!
After a lot of research on these box pouches I found this one. I finally made one and I am very happy with it. Thanks to Melanie for making this video and many others and to her family for keeping this much valued information out there. :)
I try and save as many of Melanie's tutorials as possible. Her tutorials still inspire me try sewing something new. What a sweet legacy she has left for so many to enjoy.
I saw this video looking for a good tutorial about how to make a boxed pouch. I saw her memorial video as well. I am so sorry for her loved ones loss. You will live on through the people you teach through this platform. Sending love to her family and loved ones.
My daughter, grandaughter and I made a medium makeup bag last Saturday after finding Melanie on UA-cam. Broke my heart when I found out she had passed. These are wonderful tutorials. Blessings of sweet memories to her family!
I made one today, and it came out so cute! Its always nice to hear your voice. Great instructions BTW for anyone new here. I've followed this tutorial before, but back when it was new. Miss you so much, sweet girl ❤
I loved this pouch. Haven't sewn for 3 decades but I wanna give it a go. It will be constant reminder of Melanie's beautiful tutorials .I hope this channel remains open .
Such a beautiful and kind personality comes through. My sincerest sympathy to her family. What a legacy she gives the world with these beautiful sewing tutorials. Margie ( Australia)
My jaw literally dropped open when you gave the tip about moving the needle to the left to line up with the 3/8" mark. Absolutely brilliant. Love how the bag turned out, and also thank you for having both the video & the link to your blog with the written instructions. Hopefully with the two combined I'll be able to actually make this :-) EDIT - Oh, no I just read that Melanie passed away about a year ago. Such a shame - she was so young. Grateful that her videos are still available (and yes, I made the pouch 🙂).
I made my very first quilt 2 years ago following Melanie's tutorials. It was made so easy and enjoyable through her, and I found it so satisfying. I am returning to quilting just now and had forgotten the details, so I looked up Melanie's tutorials again. So so sad and shocked to see she has passed. What a vital, beautiful and talented soul. She gave a HUGE gift to us all, so thank you thank you thank you Melanie. These videos are SO well done. The best. Very grateful.
Really miss her videos. She was always so positive and so supportive. Her directions were easy to follow and I love her spirit and love of crafts. She's probably teaching other angles up in heaven. They are so blessed to have her.
Melanie,I’m Sory to have waited so long to come back here.I couldn’t bare to look at you, without crying. I don’t know why it hit me so hard. I loved you from the beginning of the first video I watched, and learned how to make a baby blanket. It really was so easy to make. So, I made two of them for my great grandchildren two boys. I was so proud to have made them, because you showed me how easy it was to make the stitch. I miss you dearly. Such a wonderful woman you were. You had everything going for you, you’re personality, beautiful lady. Inside and out. There was something very special about you. You’re talent exceed’s mine, and I’m old. I haven’t crochet since you left us to be with GOD. Hoping you’re pain has sufficed. It’s true that GOD only takes the good one’s first. HE needed an angel and dear that was you. I wish you peace., and I miss you. I hope this is ok to write this, if it even made any sense. I apologize in advance. I hope that you’re children and you’re husband are doing better these days. Thank you Mr. Ham for getting me to look back . Please take care.😢🥰🤗 Xox.
Melanie, I’ve been thinking about you all day. I even made my niece a box pouch for school. I really hope your surgery went well. So many prayers. You’re the reason i started quilting/crafting and i appreciate you so much.
I'm learning to sew and Melanie's videos have been extremely helpful! She was such great teacher, heartbreaking she's no longer with us 💔 Thank you to her family for keeping her videos up.
Thank you so much for this! I am new to sewing and so many tutorials assume that you understand measuring and/or how to sew in stuff like a zipper. You went so nice and slowly and explained everything so that us newbies could understand. Thank you!! : )
Thank you, thank you! I'm not really good at sewing, but I made a bag using your video and it turned out great. Will try another larger one soon, since the one I mad is quite small for my knitting projects.
Just completed this project and by far, this is the best tutorial I have come across. I am a self-taught beginner, so my bag was not perfect; however, my second attempt was beautiful! Thank you for all the helpful hints and tricks.
I came across the box pouch tutorial and am about to make some. I didn't realise she was was no longer with us until I read the comments. I'm sad to see that but so glad I found her channel which was now become one of my favourites.
My favorite tutorial of all time! I've made more than two dozen so far - travel themed bridal shower prizes and family gifts one Christmas. Fun to make and so handy. Miss you, Melanie.❤❤
I've made these from other UA-cam tutorials, but none of those have had the precision and attention to detail yours has. I really don't need any more of these pouches in the house, but now I have to have at least one perfect one, using all your tricks.
Great tutorial! Learning tutorials never go out of style and is always teaching someone new things! I hope Melanie's tutorials stay on U-tube always even though she is not here! 😔❤
I miss Melanie’s cheerful and clear instruction and continue to treasure her videos. Thank you for leaving these up!!! (I always love the way she used to say, “And this is for my beginners…” - such a dear soul.
Loved your tutorial, and I like how slow and methodical you are. A thought: To really finish this bag off, you could leave your turning opening along the zipper edge of the lining. Only sew the outer fabric completely down, then sew the lining onto it, but with your opening. Then you sew around all the edges, box it out, turn it rights sides at the zipper, and top stitch it down and voila! No need to hand stitch, and no pinched seam in the bottom. Looks super professional!
I would love to see this, I think I understand but I would have to see it to really get it. Similar to turning out a crossbody bag through the bottom of the interior pocket instead of the lining.
I’m really new to this, if someone who understands this tip could direct me to a video tutorial, if one exists, I would appreciate. I’m assuming you are describing a way to attach the lining to the main fabric at the boxed corners, but I have a difficult time with written instruction. Bless Melanie, I just loved how she taught. RIP Dear one
I really appreciate this tutorial, I have made many box pouches but was searching for a no raw edges one for ages. So thank you and condolences to the family. What a wonderful legacy.
When you’re sewing the zipper to the lining and holding back the outer pieces, may be use a zipper foot.. I’ve done that before and it really makes a difference.. Love from London UK 🥰😍
N S Khanum Good tip! If you don’t have a narrower foot, it might help to put something of similar thickness under the other side of the foot. That way, the foot is level instead of sideways. There’s also a little button on the back of certain feet that will do the same thing (raise the foot up to help go over thick spots). 😊
N S Khanum That’s exactly what I had to do. I just made one tonight, and I had to switch to the zipper foot because I didn’t have enough room. It was a fun project, though! I used cotton fabric, but I wonder what else I can use that would give the bag a little more structure and sturdiness.
I found this video linked from elsewhere and, when I came here, did a little happy dance to have found such a helpful and useful source, thinking, ‘Yay, me!’, and subscribed. I hopped over to comment, and was stunned and saddened to learn of Melanie’s passing. The comments speak to her personality and success as a teacher. They give testament to the fact that an act of kindness or generosity is never wasted, but will be returned - or in this instance - paid forward tenfold. I will share this video with my sisters, and sewing and crafting friends so they, too, may benefit from Melanie’s talent.
Melanie - you really stand out in a sea of You Tube makers/crafters. Your tutorials are easy to follow, and you don’t leave any detail to chance (i.e. machine foot or seam allowance). I made one of these box pouches this afternoon and it’s super cute.
RIP Melanie! Many thanks for your videos & teaching style. As an older sewist, I appreciate you teaching the next generation of creators, too. So kind & intelligent! 🫠
Dear Melanie always took the time to explain everything in detail for all beginners. I'm so glad we can see her beautiful face and her caring spirit as she continues to live and teach on You Tube
I thought that my first one that I made would be a...well, a “learning experience.” But you did such a great job explaining how to do it, that my first one turned out both adorable AND functional! Thank you! :)
Just recently found her, and I'm saddened by her passing. May she rest peacefully. Thank you for your videos. You've helped me understand how to make these types of bags. 💐💞😢
I made one of these a couple years ago and it turned out okay. I just made a new one and it turned out great. I made it larger than her large size, but the only measurement I changed what the box, which I made 2 and 1/2 inches. I also used sew on fleece due to using waterproof fabric that can’t be ironed. Melanie I know you will never read this comment, but thank you for your content and being so clear with your instructions.
I was 55 years old and wanted to learn how to sew to make hiking gear. I followed Melenie’s videos on these bags and learned! Thanks! You will be missed!
I still miss Melanie, and today my sister (pouch newbie) and I made this boxed pouch together, following step by step. Such a great tutorial, and lovely tutor...❤😢 Thank you to her dear husband and family who keep this channel open for us xx
Just finished making this. I’m soooo happy. You’re a great instructor. I taught myself to sew/use my machine in March by following your elastic face mask tutorial and I haven’t stopped sewing since! I plan to follow your “first quilt” series next month. Thanks Melanie 💕
I just came across this tutorial. I've never sewn a zipper before, but I just made this pouch with no issues! Thank you so much for sharing such a clear and easy tutorial!

It’s so sad lost such a good teacher but your are living our hearts thank you 🙏
one of the best tutorials for making boxed pouches that I have seen.
Miss you, lady. Thanks for all you did. ❤️
I still use her zippered box pouch tutorial. I have made lots of them and always watch her video when I’m making them. She was a fantastic teacher.
I made this today. I am so proud of myself! Thank you Melanie for sharing your talents with us. Rest in Peace. ❤️
Thank you Melanie for teaching us so much.❤
Rest in peace, Melanie. I just learned that she passed away yesterday from her battle with cancer.
Oh, that’s so sad.
That's terrible :(
Oh no!!!! 😭🙏🏽
Omg! 😩
This lady??
Thank you. I tried other pouch with cutting The corners like yours. For my first try. It turned out good.
A thought:
To really finish this bag off, you could leave your turning opening along the zipper edge of the lining.
I like that idea. Because I don’t like that ridge created on the inside bottom of the bag, and no hand sewing needed gives a stronger hold. Thank you!
I thought exactly the same! Love from Athens, Greece 😊
N S Khanum That’s exactly what I had to do. I just made one tonight, and I had to switch to the zipper foot because I didn’t have enough room. It was a fun project, though! I used cotton fabric, but I wonder what else I can use that would give the bag a little more structure and sturdiness.
I ended up using the zipper foot - felt a lot more in control! Thanks.
N S Khanum glad to know I wasn’t the only one 😅... did one too and used the zipper foot and helps a lot. Really well explained this tutorial!
Thank you Melanie, your legacy lives on 💛
Bless Melanie , still teaching me from heaven 💕
Melanie - you really stand out in a sea of You Tube makers/crafters. Your tutorials are easy to follow, and you don’t leave any detail to chance (i.e. machine foot or seam allowance). I made one of these box pouches this afternoon and it’s super cute.
I forgot how amazing this woman was. Makes sewing easier for us! So easy to follow!
Making these for bridesmaids and moms gifts for my daughters wedding next year-already have the fabric! Thanks for sharing :)
just made this little bag today. thanks so much for the tutorial. may you rest in peace. thank you for introducing the fun of sewing into my life :)
I've been sewing for over 40 years and still learn something from her videos. Hope sewing is working out for you!
Making this bag this week in your honour ❤️
A very beautiful soul. Im sorry to her beautiful family about her passing. I love her tutorials. Thankyou Melanie
You’re the Best Teacher!! Thank You so much for going Slow enough for us new Students. Now, I’m going to make me One.
Hi Everyone! Excited to bring you a sewing tutorial! And just in time to whip some of these up for Christmas presents!
Did you post this on your Instagram didn't see it but thanks for the tutorial always want to make one for my mom.
I did some little ones as gifts this year, but now I learned how to add those side tabs. Thanks.
Melanie Ham just wondering if the large zipper is the same size as the medium bag?
Melanie Ham where can I find the butterfly fabric !? 🦋🦋🦋 addict here lol
I was 55 years old and wanted to learn how to sew to make hiking gear. I followed Melenie’s videos on these bags and learned! Thanks! You will be missed!
This is the best thing ever!! When I mark my 1/2”, I put a pin where the mark is so I can see where to stop and start . Thank you so much for this!!
Great idea! Thanks!
I still miss Melanie, and today my sister (pouch newbie) and I made this boxed pouch together, following step by step. Such a great tutorial, and lovely tutor...❤😢 Thank you to her dear husband and family who keep this channel open for us xx
Love the updated version. I still make your old box pouch all the time. It’s my go to last minute present:)
I have used this tutorial to make over 30 pouches and have told so many friends about it. Thank you so much for keeping it on UA-cam! RIP, Melanie
Just finished making this. I’m soooo happy. You’re a great instructor. I taught myself to sew/use my machine in March by following your elastic face mask tutorial and I haven’t stopped sewing since! I plan to follow your “first quilt” series next month. Thanks Melanie 💕
What size does the pattern we print make?
I just came across this tutorial. I've never sewn a zipper before, but I just made this pouch with no issues! Thank you so much for sharing such a clear and easy tutorial!
