What I Wish I Knew Before I Took My First Cruise

  • Today, I make my living writing and talking about cruises, but just over a decade ago, I took my first trip ever. In the dozens of cruises since, I've learned a lot, and there is plenty that I remember thinking before the first cruise that was just plain wrong, and other things that I just had no idea about.
That's why I'm pulling back the curtain and sharing what no one told me before I took my first cruise. From pricing to formal night... from sales pitches to the crowd onboard, this is what I wish I knew before I sailed.

Upon doing my first cruise, I was constantly in the Carnival website looking up the information. I even knew by heart the lay out of the ship. It was Carnival Fascination, and even being a small ship, it was huge to me once I stepped onto it. I'm the kind of person who needs to know and plan things in advance. Last cruise was a B2B2B on Mardi Gras, and I still knew everything that was needed.
Next cruise is in Carnival Vista and looking forward to it. 14 days

You’re very wise. I quickly realized the real costs while I was on my 1st cruise. But I still love cruising!!!

My first Carnival cruise in 1991 had an energetic topless deck. San Diego spring break. I wish they told me it was the last time😊

And back then, we were all a bit thinner (myself included!)

I was a sworn true believer not to pay for food on the ship, but since we were on our 25th anniversary cruise, I thought it would be a good time to do it. We went to the steakhouse on board and I can honestly tell you it was the best food I've ever had on a cruise ship, hands down. It is no secret that lines are revamping food items in MDR's to the point that items you traditionally received in the past are no longer available. Even if you do one pay restaurant, it is worth it if you really crave a good steak, seafood or ethnic fare.

Agree with you 100%. I hate having to spend extra, but it's just flat out better food.

First 🛳 was the 7 day 9:10 Norwegian joy loved it 4500 people? Second cruise was 2000 passenger 9 day. Loved the smaller ships. Then again we're a couple so we don't get bored. ISLANDS AND MEXICO ARE THE nastiest tourist traps in the world

I feel your pain of having Galveston as the home port. Im so over sailing from there that no matter the cruise line, no matter the ship, they all go to the same 6 places. I love Cozumel, but i with all my heart, i hate Costa Maya.

All the cruise lines need to get together and dredge sand to create an island in the gulf. Boom. New port of call.

My experience with the Caribbean and Mexico is that most areas that serve cruise passengers do speak English. However, we recently cruised out of San Juan, Puerto Rico and found that neither the Uber drivers nor the taxi drivers spoke English, which made getting around San Juan a little frustrating.

Wow. You visited another country and EXPECTED them to speak a language of YOUR home country. That's why other countries think Americans are rude and entitled.

I wish I knew the photo packages were astronomical on our first cruise. I wouldn't have put us through the process of that experience if I knew it was thousands of dollars for them. I will bring our own camera from now on.
