    Great watch! I'm super impressed with Don's photos. His setup works great without the weight. I have the R7, but rarely use it opting for the R5 + RF 100-500mm. I really need to play with the R7 more. Really loved the Oystercatcher photos. You guys had a nice day. As always, Scott, thanks for all the tips and taking us along. -Cathy, NJ

    I am looking forward to the videos that are coming, really enjoyed the Kodiak videos last year. This video was a joy to watch too and the timing is great, I get my RF 100-400 mm tomorrow :P I found my Tamron 100-400 a bit soft and seeing Dons photos I am very excited about the new lens :)

      Its going to be fun trip. We may get a more vlog feel for next couple weeks, then some big videos.

    Thanks Scott for the video. It was interesting combo - R7 + 100 400 + 1.4 TC for F11 and 800+ mm focal length. Worthwhile to check this combo in bright light.

      It was used in all light conditions on that day. We went from mostly cloudy, to dark skies and rain, and then to a full bright hard light day.

    What a great video and thanks to you both. I use an R5 and 100-500 but I am getting older and am beginning to find it heavy. I also use the R10 and 100-400, which is fabulous for the size and I am so much happier carrying it around. I still have to see if the image quality is good enough for me but so far it is good. Of course now I’m thinking of getting the R7. Good thing that gear is cheap….😮

    Great shots, Scott. I'm often hesitant to put the 1.4x on the 100-500, at f11 and the 300mm flaw but it's good to know even at that aperture, you can still get good shots.

      I worried about the same issues with my R7/RF100-500, but the specs are similar to those of the 800mm F11 prime in both reach (700 vs 800mm) and maximum aperture (F10 vs F11), which I considered as an alternative. I finally opted for the TC, and I've been pleased by the results in terms of image quality and autofocus performance. I have wondered if this depends on the optical quality of the RF100-500 and the R7's 32 MP sensor resolution, but I have had no regrets with this set-up.

      Not at same time. Just switching to video from stills and back. There are times I do record video with a setup and still with another, but it has to be a dedicated situation. In this video, im just switching back and forth.

    HI Scott I am new to your channel and I first watched you film on setting up the R7 for bird photography. I have bought an R7 with the RF100-400mm lens. it's great but I am still getting used to it. However I was told that because the R7 has a crop sensor I couldn't use a TC. Youn seem to have disproved that or am I missing something. Your style of video is great by the way and you live in fantastic place by the way. Thanks. I would like to hear back about this issue.
    Cheers

    Hi, very good video. Just curious, is the video of the loons handheld with the r7 and 100-400. If so, that’s awesome! I am looking for something like this. I have 500 f4 ii and r5. Handheld video is ok with 120 fps but 24 fps is impossible with this setup. R7 100-400 looks great!

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  3 місяці тому

      Yes all handheld as the RF 100-400 isn't very tripod friendly 🤪
      I shoot everything pretty much @ 120fps. I shoot the 500 f4 MKII a lot also.

    Nice to find a young Oyster Catcher. I haven't seen a chick yet.
    The images from the big lens are better but with the price difference they better be. That little RF 100-400 does a nice job for the price. A lot easier to carry around all day too.

    I have the 100-400mm, never thought about the 1.4x, will have to try and borrow one. As an aside, if you use the RAW burst on the R7 and keep your finger on the shutter, will you get more images before it hits the buffer then if you just used it normally?. Was at an airshow in the UK and chatting with a fellow user who said he always used it as he did, wondered if you had any comments. Thanks. Look forward to the bears.

      you will get the same number of shots as a normal shutter pull, just 15 of those will be pre-shutter hit

    To start I really love your vids always enjoy watching the especially the canon content. I was wondering are you having issues with the R7? The sign off vs the images in the vid don’t seem to match. I don’t know if it’s just the video but from what I could see there weren’t many images that had critical focus, they all seemed slightly off bar a small percentage. Is this right in the images or is it just how it looks in the video? I know you have raved about the R7 but with Duades issues and a lot of negativity around the R7 and seeing some of these images it really doesn’t make me want to buy one. Also with where the R5 is in its schedule it doesn’t seem a good time drop 4K on it and the R6 and MKII have lower mp than my 5D4s and 6D2 so I’m kind of waiting to see what happens but desperate to jump into the canon mirror less world. Would appreciate your input on the images!

      I have the same dilemma. The only difference is that I have the r7 and thinking to upgrade to FF.

    • @tomscott88
      @tomscott88 Рік тому

      On a DSLR FF is a no brainier but then the DSLRs were a lot cheaper than canons new range. It’s the AF I’m interested in otherwise I would stick with my twin 5D4s. It’s the resolution gap canon has 20 24 or 45 and I really like my 5s 30mp sensors even all these years later.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  Рік тому +4

      its more than likely the resolution or playback device and UA-cam compression. The images are tack sharp and at times we were both surprised at how sharp they were for the situation we put the shot through.
      the issues folks are having is they are holding the eye auto detect constantly when taking shots of something not changing in a focal plane. and by doing that the Af is constantly checking where the eye or head or body is and will decide its something else and you get that 'pulse'. instead if you subject is in the same spot get focus and then get off the button and use BBF

    Nice! Does Don reckon he gets a sharper image with the 1.4 TC than he would get from cropping in post?
    Most advice says to avoid TCs on crop sensors and zooms lenses. But the R7 with RF 100-400 is real tempting when paired with a TC for the effective 2.24X reach (between the TC and the APS-C), but I wonder if the same or better sharpness could be reached with cropping vs the TC?
    Would be interesting to see if he tested it out!

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  Рік тому +3

      ok good question, but you need to understand that cropping and tc's are not the same thing.
      If you crop an image you will reduce its size in mp. if you add a tc you will 'gain' mp on your subject. so the tc will put more mp on a subject and cropping will reduce the mp of an image and you subject will have the same mp as prior to cropping just larger.

    • @gardenstack
      @gardenstack Рік тому +4

      @@WILDALASKA
      Thank you for your reply! I understand the distinction between cropping and using a TC. I was getting more at overall image quality. A blurry image could still have a high MP count.
      I've come across commentary suggesting that TCs work best when there's additional, unutilized detail that could be brought out. For example, when zooming into an image taken without a TC, it might be obvious that there's leftover detail that could be further magnified effectively. In these cases using a TC could be ideal. However, I have heard concerns that with the 100-400mm RF lens, towards max zoom on an APS-C, there might not be much of this 'extra' detail to extract, and the distortions can outweigh the lost MPs from cropping in post.
      This is all theoretical, based on other enthusiasts and photographers' comments. I also figured Canon made the TCs only in white to suggest that they're best paired with more expensive lenses like the RF 100-500. Since Don is a regular user of this particular setup - the R7 with the 100-400mm RF and a TC - I thought it would be interesting to hear his practical insights on this. Is there a noticeable difference in sharpness or quality between using a TC versus simply cropping the image in post, particularly when photographing at max zoom with this lens?
      I think this would be a valuable perspective for many of us considering similar setups.
      Looks like a great trip you're on! Safe travels

      @gardenstack Great summary. That is actually also a question I keep asking myself in that context. The lens in combination with a 32.5MP crop sensor might well be physically limited regarding the extractable detail. A direct comparison of cropping and TP would really be awesome and also pretty easy to achieve.

    RF 100-400mm + RF x1.4 TC or just buy RF 800mm for R10/R7 ? (I already have RF 100-400mm)
    Both combinations are F/11, but its 900mm vs 1280mm, not a small difference (1.4x factor).
    Weight-wise RF 800mm is a bit heavier, 1260g vs 860g, i.e. 400g more.
