I expect Once Upon a Studio to win best animated short film. It truly is a wonderful tribute to 100 years of the Disney company. Edit: It wasn’t nominated, which is a crime.
Throughout most of this review after seeing the film myself and also enjoying it for what it is, I actually thought to myself "Yeah, that sounds about right." And if there's anything I learned from this film EVEN MORE than I already did from Frozen II, it's to not be fully dependent on what others say (especially critics) and be your own judge!
That's what my dad keeps telling me I really need to listen to him when it comes to this. From now on I'm not gonna care what anyone else says about movies if I enjoy them than that's good enough for me.
I'll admit that I liked seeing the images of all of the Disney characters from 100 years of filmmaking in the credits. It was a nice touch even if some choices were a bit odd.
I actually had an amazing time with Wish. While it's not one of my top 10 favorite Disney animated movies, but I still had a fun time with it. And that's what makes Disney's 100th anniversary so special: have a fun, magical time.

I just saw the movie today. I think it's one of their best ones thus far. They kinda went back to their standard formula while also not depending on a romance story. I liked the return of the wishes was more about people becoming the best versions of themselves by seeing that it was possible, without King Magnifico, to make their wishes come true. I just know I was the happiest person in the world leaving the theater.
You took the words right out of our month about this movie being the most anticipating this year for all us Disney Fan, I wanna say that "WISH" is the most movie I am looking forward to check out this holiday season plus "Once Upon A Studio" is definitely my favorite animated short.
Saw this today in the cinema and I thought it was amazingly good! I adored the backgrounds, the refences, the songs and of course an actual pure Disney Villain after so long! Please ignore the mixed reviews and check out the movie yourselves!
I already did, and I liked it. It made me believe that wishes are a part of who you are and no one can take that wish away from you. Congrats Disney, Happy 100!
I’m really glad you enjoyed this film. I also enjoyed it turn when I saw it earlier. I can agree the story had its flaws for being a typical Disney film with elements going too fast, but I did enjoy some humor, the animation is great, characters were enjoyable, and I liked some of the songs. Although, the movie would’ve been much better if it was hand drawn
Since you said you didn't want to mention all the references, here are some of my favorites: - Of course the watercolor-like effect is a nod to Sleeping Beauty as you mentioned, but that's not all! Sleeping Beauty also affected the shape of Wish as Wish uses a 2.55:1 aspect ratio, which Disney hasn't used since Sleeping Beauty. - Star's face was inspired by Mickey Mouse's face. - According to Asha, her father used to tell her that “the stars are there to guide us,” which is a reference to Mufasa. - Vials that resemble Yzma’s poison potions can be seen in Magnifico’s lab. The moving books reference Sword & the Stone. The Poison Apple from Snow White can even be spotted in the lab. - When Asha heads out into the forest, she wears a periwinkle blue cloak with a magenta bow. This fittingly references the Fairy Godmother! - The I'm A Star musical number alone is chock full of them! The flowers are a nod to Alice in Wonderland, the sentient trees and raccoon are a nod to Pocahontas, Valentino saying "See, that's where all the balls of gas come from!" references Pumbaa, there's of course Little John and Bambi, the mushrooms saying "We love crazy!" are a nod to Frozen, and there's even a squirrel that references the ones in Sword & the Stone!
I’m stoked that I’m not the only one who appreciates this film for what it is. I watched this movie with my sisters on thanksgiving and I absolutely loved it for many reasons. Firstly, the animation is unlike anything I’ve seen from this studio. All I’ve been seeing is crap for the animation: “it looks like a kids tv show”, “it looks weird”, etc. The animation serves two purposes: to look like a storybook come alive and to celebrate the roots and progress Disney has made. The character’s expressions are a treat to see and compliment the incredible voice acting. The backgrounds are all beautifully painted watercolor, which I hardly ever see in a mainstream animation studio anymore. Each movement is as smooth as silk; the artists took careful consideration with each action, and it shows. Now, the songs are no “Be Prepared” or “Out There”, but each lyric of every song is carefully thought out and cleverly works for each of their featured scenes. I especially want to harp on this point for “this is the thanks I get”, widely regarded as the worst villain song ever made (or at least that’s what it made out to be). I’ve found myself listening to that thing on repeat; Chris pine is a talented singer, and while it isn’t the best villain song ever, it highlights the fragile insecurities of king magnifico and how he is becoming the same people that destroyed his home. It puts his personality on full blast, like a villain song should (I suggest we enjoy what we got, cuz it might not happen again 😂). My personal favorite was “with what I know now.” Banger in my opinion. Finally, the characters were a job well done. Asha has her strong focus on bettering her community, while also displaying weaknesses that the king can exploit. King magnifico is the definition of millennials these days (I’m kidding), dahlia is the anchor that keeps her friend group in line, and Valentino is…well he’s Valentino. Certainly no annoying Olaf, that’s for sure. I’m no film critic. I have no credentials. If you think this movie is a sack of shit, go off king. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and i can’t take that away. What I don’t appreciate, however, is people making others collectively object to something they could have enjoyed, or clowning on the artists who poured their sweat and tears into something designed to say “thank you.” Not every movie can be a spiderverse. Not every movie can be a puss in boots. They shouldn’t be. Animation is a forever changing art form, and as long as artists young and old have any speck of new vision or input, that’s all that matters. Fawn Veerasunthorn, thanks for putting out your first vision. I appreciate the review, animat.
I honestly think the hate for this movie is also due to bad timing. These days pretty much almost every fandom has become toxic in a negative way, and will do anything to tear something apart no matter what. ESPECIALLY the Disney fandom. It's a shame too, cause I really think the hate for this film is a little unfair. It's a celebration of Disney animation. And that's good enough for me.
Not to mention, of what I interpreted, it was all due to fandom entitlement. I believe it would be a good time to either read or watch Misery. Another note, this unnecessary hatred against Wish became very intense that my response is 'Isn't this like the time in which Hideaki Anno and Gainax made the last three episodes of Evangelion and how it got a similar response? At least, these people didn't go as far as putting spiteful hate graffiti on the studio and even sending death threats to the crew.'
I know how that feels. Despite how dumb the setup of it was, my uncle Chris found something to like about Leela's story and He-Man's story in Masters of the Universe: Revelation that The Critical Drinker and most other people giving it a negative review overlooked.
We should all know that disney's 100th year should have at least a quite amount of redeeming qualities. I don't think animation should be hated all the time, it should be loved. (even the original ideas.) It's saving grace is it's animation at least,I I pretty much loved what it was trying to do, I know it's trying to mimic the cel animation replica of the 90s and 2000s, it would work very well if it was 2d animation with bits of cg (same goes for encanto).
After seeing how many people (audience -wise) enjoyed Wish (raspberries to the critics for thinking otherwise), I’m glad I checked out Wish for myself. While it is far from perfect, this film is very fun and I’d love to check it out again.🙂
Who knows Wish might end up being another case of Megamind, in which the movie upon its release was seen as "meh" and "forgettable" but over time became a cult classic. Or Wish might be another Brave where time has not been so kind to it and it's only legacy is the big 4 💀
@@kittykittybangbang9367 I agree. People will probably have different opinions on Wish when it cools down a bit. Perhaps when it’s released on home media, kinda like what happened to other animated films like Balto, The Emperor’s New Groove, and Brother Bear (to name few).
Just saw the movie myself and I thought it was alright. I really admired the art direction, most of the songs, the various references, everything involving Star, and its message on wishes, but the story felt lacking in some parts. It's probably just me, but I feel like King Magnifico's dissension to madness could've been a bit more gradual, considering how quickly it happened after using that forbidden spell book. It would've been a good way of showing how his personality affected how he used that forbidden magic, rather than the magic itself seemingly taking control of him. His wife also could've shown some reluctance with keeping Magnifico trapped in that crystal, only doing so after giving it some thought. I also found Asha's 'Seven Dwarves' friends kind of forgettable due to their one-note personalities, aside from maybe the Grumpy and Sleepy counterparts. Despite those gripes though, I'm still glad I saw this movie. I can at least tell that a lot of heart was put into this film, including its themes on wishes. Plus, I really hope they'll continue experimenting with the cel-shaded CGI look in their future films.
Wow! This is a well crafted review. Of coarse I enjoyed hearing your opinion on the movie. What I found to be the best part of it is that you were showing your straightforward honesty on what you think of the film itself. As a Disney fan myself, I’m still optimistic to check this out. Also, as much as I want to stay supportive for the next Frozen sequels and Zootopia 2, i do want Disney Animation to be careful with those and not overflow their schedule with sequels. Seeing and supporting Wish in theaters would convince Disney Animation alone to not overflow their schedule with sequels. I think we can all agree that this could’ve been worse. We’re looking at you Chicken Little and Home on the Range!
I saw this movie last night, and I had a blast. I really enjoyed the songs, the animation was cool to look at, I really like the character of Asha, and I especially enjoyed that we had a pure Disney villain instead of a twist villain. While I did have some problems with some characters and their ways of delivering the humor, as well as how some elements could’ve been fleshed out better, these flaws weren’t enough to ruin my experience watching this film. I’m glad I got to see this in theaters (as well as not let the negative online reviews get to me), and here’s hoping more people come to enjoy this movie too. Good job on this review, Mat!
I feel like this is the first time I've seen the internet so split on Walt Disney Animation Studios film in last 3 years. With Raya everyone kinda agreed it was mid, Encanto everyone loved and declared a masterpiece, Strange World everyone heaped on, but then there's Wish, which has people declaring it awful, okay, and amazing all at once.

Regardless what others think I’m glad there’s some like you that like it for what it is and besides, I think it’s unfair to rely on Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic to judge a film or games performance, we need to start making our own judgement. As always, great job with your review AniMat.
You know what? Screw it! Whenever I get the chance, I’m seeing this film in theaters! Regardless of what the critics have said! No offense to those who have seen it and don’t particularly fancy it.
As if it was bad enough that “Strange World” broke Disney Animation's winning streak at the box office ever since “Bolt”, it's quite shocking how “Wish” broke their winning streak with the critics since “Meet the Robinsons”. I thought this was a good mixture of old and new with its storytelling, animation, characters, and music. It shouldn't be looked down upon as a generic rehash of Disney, but more as a celebration of all things the animation division has done over the years.
I'll say this, Wish feels like a movie that's meant for the Disney super fans. If you're just a casual viewer, you're not gonna get the same experience out of watching it, but if you are a die hard fan of Disney Animation, there's plenty to love.
@@Thomas_H._Smith Wish had all the ingredients to make for a new smash hit, which makes it all the more crushing that it opened below expectations at the box office. How did that happen?
Personally, I say "Critics what do they know!" (Outside of you of course) When It was coming out I knew that this was going to be very special for Disney and trying to make it a masterpiece like the classics already felt like it was too much pressure for it to reach. Certainly, I know it's not "Oscar-worthy" but I know that considering the references you know for a fact it's all made with love and really does make the picture seem worthwhile. I'll say Happy 100th Disney!
You know what? You've convinced me to check out the movie this weekend. All the other reviewers I follow say it's a disappointingly bland mediocrity, but I always want to give an animated Disney movie a chance.
If I'm being honest favoritism is something i completely avoid when to media I like, cause I'm just a person of the audience who judges stuff based on if I enjoy it or if i think it makes great escapism, I don't praise an animation studio as the greatest of all time, I like various movies and TV shows from different studios and a lot of which are not well liked by critics (vivziepops cartoons are the biggest examples I use) I want to use media as a way of escapism, not to judge them.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who enjoyed Wish! I honestly thought it was a good movie too! I think everyone is just hating on it because social media is telling them to.
Oh, thank God! I'm glad there are some critics out there who understand all the hard work the filmmakers put into this film! There are others like Vailskibum who mercilessly trashed this underappreciated work of art.
I gave it a 7 out of 10 (while seeing this film as its own thing along with as a tribute) and Your opinion on the film is similar to mine too. While I understand why it is not the best Disney film made and can have disappointing moments, I personally don’t understand the overwhelming hate of this film in UA-cam and other social media at all. And ironically the way ppl described their opinions on the film is the exact same as mine for FNAF Movie (I don’t hate that film either, just a 5/10 for me)
I’ve been a big fan of Disney movies and shows throughout my life, and despite everything other critics have said, I still want to see this film for myself As you’ve said, it may not be perfect, but it might be good for what it is
I thought Wish was pretty good as both a film and a celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary. I really like the animation, the songs are pretty good, and some characters do have charm to them especially King Magnifico being an actual full fledged disney villain. My favorite character would probably be Gabo. But I do wish the story was better handled and less predictable, and that some characters like asha friends had much more of an active role and depth in their personalities. I give it a 7.5/10, not the best but I really enjoy this celebration of Disney. But from the reactions I’ve seen it looks like it’s becoming the next Pocahontas. If you remember the production of that film, it was supposed to put Disney creativity and storytelling to a new level and be a serious competitor for an Oscar for best picture. But instead, while it ended up successful in theaters, it was flop with critics and audiences back then. Sure, it’s now a cult favorite but back then it was considered the weakest of the Disney renaissance. So, I’m thinking the same might happen here too. Also, I’m hoping that Disney animation makes a hand drawn Mickey Mouse feature film in 2028. That would be a cool way to celebrate his 100th anniversary.
I will fully admit that isn't the best Walt Disney Animation Studios film or even up there with some of their biggest masterpieces such as Fantasia, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Zootopia, Encanto, etc. But this is a solid way of celebrating 100 years of Disney and definitely doesn't deserve the mixed reactions. Do people just hate fun? Or Disney magic?
Seems like it. Also I hate how so many people act like doomers saying thd studio is dying. Those must be the same kind of morons saying "Waaah! Waaah! Animation is dyiiiiiiiiing! Waaah!" 24/7. Like go touch grass people and leave everyone else alone.
The critics said the film sucked. But I always like to watch the film for myself. And I have to say it was okay. Far from Disney’s best but it was okay. I had a decent time. I’m glad Disney finally had a villain though.
Nimona 9/10 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 9/10 Elemental 8/10 Wish 8/10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 7/10 The Super Mario Bros. @@lexramstudios1386I heard someone said the same about Elemental looking like it was made using AI, which is especially insulting when you consider just how personal of a story it is for its writer and director, Peter Sohn, who is the son of Korean immigrants.
I'm not going to make the same mistake I made with Elemental, a movie that I love, and I'll watch it in theaters. AniMat is right: it doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be enjoyable. I was also shocked by the bad reviews. Seriously, what's going on with some critics?
People just love complaining with stupid ass high expectation. The same people made me despise Dreamworks as a whole from now on, now can't help but associate them with those rabid fanboys.
Elemental was praised by most critics though? It was the (regular) people who are bashing it everywhere in the social media calling it woke and uncreative and other shit. People are telling us to stay away from it, while the critics on the other hand mostly say it is enjoyable and are urging us to watch it. You didn't watch Elemental? The one to blame are not the critics, but the people who are bashing it. And many critics does praise Wish. I mean, the Rotten Tomato Tatometer is 50% indicating that 50% of the critics does praise and recommend us to watch Wish. If you think Tatometer is an indication of quality, then it says that Wish is just middling, smack in the middle in terms of quality. Reading the reviews would tell you that most of the critics consider Wish to be just middling or average, very few outright say that it is bad and there are few that says it is very good. "I was also shocked by the bad reviews. Seriously, what's going on with some critics?" -Come on. Rotten Tomato Audience Rating is 78% telling us that there are 22% percent who give it a bad rating. Are you going to say "Seriously, what's going on with some of the audience?" It is not like Animat isn't giving bad ratings to films that people liked. He practically give seal of garbage for films like Transylvanian and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Films that both critics and audience liked that Animat labels as garbage. They are just giving us their opinions about it and that is it. Like, you expect everyone to have the same opinion as you. If you like it, then everyone should like it and vice versa. If they don't agree with you, then something is seriously wrong going on with them.
Hot take: I cried so hard during the ending and the credits especially when they showed all the Disney Characters.😭 Honesty the best ending to an animated movie this year! ⭐️ 🥹
I have seen Wish and let me tell you. This is what I have been waiting for quite some time and it is a triumphant return to Classic Disney. In fact, even with the teaser trailer, I have been preparing to see all of the films of the Disney Animated Canon (even The Black Cauldron and minus Home on the Range and Chicken Little for obvious reasons) and played Epic Mickey (in which I have made similarities prior before seeing the film as they were both celebrating Disney's legacy albeit in different ways) to prepare to see not only Wish but also Once Upon A Studio. Now, as for those naysayers that say that the story of Wish is generic and bland, well here is the twist in the knife fact for all of you, many, if not all, of the films that Disney have made over the century has very generic and bland stories, if you take away the fairy tale aspect of most of their films based on existing fairy tales, yet they were able to be timeless and beloved and that is what Wish is going for. Also for the multiple allusions to other Disney films, I very much enjoyed it, probably because I have never ever watched anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story is classical for a very valid reason, the characters are charming and lovely (I really liked Asha, Sabino is suprisingly my favourite character due to his role in the story and characterisation, Magnifico is the finest and quite the sadistic villain in quite some time and as for Star, it would be as if you combine the personality and energy of the Little Prince and the face shape and eyes of Mickey Mouse and that is enough for me to love him instantly), the theme of community is very strong and admirable, the humour actually gave me very good chuckles, outstanding voice acting, songs that were actually very striking with memorable and inventive lyrics, fantastic score and the animation is lovely and even beautiful. I meant it with utmost sincerity. For anyone who is saying that Wish felt as if it is done by an AI and even dissing the crew because of it in terms of the animation, songs and even the story, clearly you have no respect for the crew who actually made the film. You may call me a naive, even to say ignorant and mushy-brained, fool for all you want, but I gurantee you, you were definetly missing out on something wonderful if you stop being cynical all the time and hopping on board on the Disney Hate Express. With all that out of the way, prepare to hear the full story of Wish, but be wary for some spoilers... Asha's motivation is clear from the start as she cared so much about her community, friends and family, especially her beloved great grandfather Sabino, who is a 100 years old (fitting, I might add) and is celebrating his birthday and is also a blend of the Minstrel from Sleeping Beauty and Georges Hautecourt from The Aristocats and not to mention a brilliant ode and salute to Milt Kahl, one of the Nine Old Men (My father even stated Sabino resembled his own grandfather especially his facial features). Asha is very likeable from that very information alone. As for the Teens who were obvious allusions to the Dwarves, they actually have their own personalites, especially in their vocal performances and character animation, rather than repeats. Simon, who is an allusion to Sleepy, is actually one of the more fascinating member of Asha's friends. See, I would like to imagine that whilst Simon dozes off, which he does, he actually dreams that Rosas is going to be in great peril thanks to Magnifico, and that he is aware of the king's wickedness, but doesn't want to mention it to his friends just yet. When it appeared as if Simon betrayed his friends by revealing the whereabouts of Asha and Star, he did it because he is afraid for anyone of his community to spot both Asha and Star and reporting to Magnifico so he risked his life just to save them. That is an admittedly reckless yet gut-punching and brave move that this young man has ever done. Talking of Magnifico, let us analyse his villainy by using the dragon motif as seen from the forbbiden book. When we first see him, his appearance resembles Elliot from Pete's Dragon. When he is slightly tempted to use the book, he resembles Madam Mim's dragon form from The Sword in the Stone and when he embraced his wickedness, he resembles Maleficent's dragon form from Sleeping Beauty. In other words, Magnifco seemed to be a charming and benevolent dragon but he is actually vicious, narcissistic and dangerous. Also, during the "I'm a Star" sequence, the trees came to life. It made me call back to the Silly Symphony short, Flowers and Trees, where the titular trees and flowers were anthropomorphised. Lastly, the post credit scene after the end credits. Sabino playing Wish Upon a Star on his lute to the night sky. Just think about it, this old fellow about 100 playing a beautiful song on a classical instrument to the night sky. This little scene made my heart move in awe in the best way possible as this is a profound and beautiful way to end the film.
Hey there Animation fans! Today, we're going to be reviewing Walt Disney's newest animated feature Wish.🌟 Let's see if this Film is worthy of honoring the studio's BIG 100.
But the rundown is a complete and total lie. “Wish” is an train wreck of a Disney movie that bombed miserably. Thanks to the success of “Godzilla Minus One” in which Godzilla takes over “Wish”. And of course, “The Marvels” was another train wreck too. Animat reviews “Wish” is a complete lie.
I personally loved it. I think a lot of people are set with a woman need to find her prince as the Disney montra. This has a female lead wanting to do the best for her community. It gives the power of the individual back to themselves. They shouldn't rely on one man to grant their wish or run their lives. Asha is trying to make their world a better place by making it more fair and individually responsible for themselves and their outcomes. Everyone had a wish/dream. No one should take that away from you. I'd recommend this film again and again. The diversity in the characters is refreshing and so needed. Not only do they showcase folks that are racially different, they also gave her best friend with a disability. These aspects of the film is so revolutionary. This represents the way the real world looks like. Again, I praise this film and I stand by it. I love it. The message, the acting, the music the colors, and the animation was a total win. . Take the kids and go see it.❤💯😍😍😍😍
The star character is my most favorite from Wish. It’s adorable, funny, and has a great design too. Honestly, it makes me want a plush toy of Star.😄 Maybe, I’ll consider making a figurine of that adorable guy.
Also, I always thought of him as Disney’s answer to Kirby, but considering he and Tinker Bell actually interacted in a promotional video, that would have made sense for him to be a breakout character.
I'm glad you liked it. This review is a breath of fresh air from all of the unfair hate that this movie gets despite not being necessarily a masterpiece. I hope it does well at the box office.
I don’t think most of the hate is “unfair” sure there are plenty of people hating the film for dumb reasons like it being “woke” whatever that means. But many others are giving genuinely fair reviews. Also box office wise…yeah no, first numbers are not great to say the least
@@spidermations6495 It's true people can dislike this movie for non toxic reasons. We're all free to like and hate what we watch. And you can even disagree with them politely too. For example. People hate the song "thanks I get" because it sounds nothing like a villain song. Well, all I have to say is, remember Gaston's song he sang at the bar in Beauty and the Beast? But the thing is, could this move have been a masterpiece? Maybe, but just because it isn't, doesn't make it automatically bad. It's a celebration of Disney animation, and that's good enough for me.
It is kinda funny, there are a lot of people using the Rotten Tomatoes score as a definitive way of knowing whether to check this film out or not. All the while, these same people seem to have forgotten that most critics also hated the Mario Movie for pretty much the same reason they're trashing this one, you know, 'The story is too simple'. Okay, yes, there are a few more criticisms this one's receiving, but that's the chief complaint I've seen.
One thing I do agree with from this review is that it's clear the homages and tributes to Classic Disney was really what made or broke the film for many of the critics who reviewed it. Some felt it really helped the film, while others felt it really made it fall flat. It's very fascinating to see how it would resonate for those who saw it. As for the review itself... ...it was excellent and super spot on!
You know, I don't remember anyone having problems with the homages to classic Disney in Enchanted. And there were lots of them. Why do they have problems with them appearing in Wish?
@gamestation2690 I forgot who it was I watched do a review, but they said how there are supposedly around 200 references and at a certain point, they started paying more attention to finding them than paying attention to the film itself and ended up remembering the hidden nods more than the movie. It's probably best to try not focusing on the references and do that on a second viewing, but I haven't watched the film, so I can't say myself how distracting it can actually be.
@gamestation2690 In wish. Although from what I've read in a news article, it's actually between 100-150 references, in-jokes and nods to Disney history.
Woah! Chris pine as the villain king magnífico?! Amazing! 🤩 First Chris became a childhood guardian with Jack Frost from rise of the guardians now he became a villainous wish keeper with this movie that is called symmetry, my friends also did I forget to mention that Asha is voiced by one of the sisters from Hamilton her performance is phenomenal. Thanks with Ariana Debose. sure this movie may not be one of the greatest but at least is a good sendoff to the 100th anniversary and a charming experience worth remembering by. Wish 8.8/10 ⭐️ Ps. My favorite songs from this movie are this wish and this is the thanks I get because One is so mighty with this message of wishing, while the other is very Catchy mix with some Villainess style Like mother Gothel, did in tangled So far so good. 😉👍
I thought Wish would be amazing, even to the critics. I was kinda expecting it to get the Animat Seal of Approval (Now, you gave it an 8/10, which is a pretty good rating for me) I was surprised this movie had a Rotten Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
@@gamestation2690 Well, here's the thing. When Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse came out in 2018, it took animation to a whole new level. Frozen 2 (2019) was not as good as the first Frozen (2013), but it still beat the original as the highest-grossing animated film ever (Not counting Lion King Remake) Things were getting worse for Disney by the time COVID came around. Onward (2020) was Pixar's first box office bomb since The Good Dinosaur (2015) Raya (2021) was good to many people, and possibly Ecanto (2021). Meanwhile, Soul (2020), Luca (2021), and Turning Red (2022) were on Disney+ Strange World and Lightyear were box office bombs in 2022. Meanwhile, Dreamworks' The Bad Guys and Puss N Boots 2 did well at the box office, as their styles look pretty much like Spiderverse. Illumination had the highest-grossing animated film of 2022 with Minions: The Rise of Gru. Illumination may have also topped it again in 2023 with The Super Mario Bros Movie. Elemental flopped at first, but earned more money afterward I think. Meanwhile, Wish was going to be another big Disney hit, but it wasn't really the case. Speaking of Frozen, happy 10th anniversary to that movie
@@danielgudinojuarez6729 yeah Star is pretty much like the Minions cuz they would dress in drag. Also, yes it does take time for new characters to be fresh in people’s minds before one of them is a merchandise king or queen

Think it's safe to say everyone has their opinions good or bad on Wish, which is good. Nice to know that Sunday, I'll be seeing the film in a positive light and determine if it's worth it? In short, the biggest plus side is that it's original and not another sequel, for now!!
I thought Disney will go to dark ages again with mixed reviews and possibly box office flops. I am sick and tired of all the people hating Disney as it they were punching bags
Technically you could say that we are in a new dark age which started with the beginning of the pandemic. I mention this because usually dark age of Disney means that the business is in rough shape and even if there were successes, they have an amount of flops. After all, Disney and many companies got economically hit by the pandemic. Yeah I’m sick of that too. It’s already annoying as is.
Honestly there were only two things that kept me interested in the movie: One: the fact that Star looks absolutely cute. Seriously, I need a plushie of him right now! Two: The massive amount of references to Disney history, especially in the credits.
Definitely a higher score then I was expecting, I will check this movie out at some point and I know a lot of people are disappointed with this movie since it's the one hundredth anniversary of Disney Studios but I say that the short once upon a studio is already a great celebration of the anniversary.
You know what I think Disney should have done instead of this movie a animated documentary movie about Walt Disney told from the perspective of Mickey and his friend. The movie could be about each of the characters being interviewed and talking about what Walt was doing when they were created.
I just finished watching Wish and it's a pretty fun film for honoring the company's history but compared to other recent Disney animated films, it just doesn't stand out enough. It's a vanilla Disney film and I feel like that might not be enough to remove the nails on it's coffin.
Screw, what rotten tomatoes says! When I see this film, which should hopefully be sometime soon, I think I’ll follow AniMat’s example, and form my own opinion about it.
People need to understand that Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t have their own critics, what they do is take reviews from the newspaper, articles, and online reviews and put them together in a average consensus. and the score is meant to say “what percentage of critics recommend this movie”
@@Sean-132 that’s true, and when people look at the big number on the tomatometer because of it, it gives them a general idea of if the film is good or bad, without them, even forming their own opinion for themselves. As a matter of fact, AniMat did a video a while back about whether or not rotten tomatoes is a trustworthy resource for film reviews.
Honestly I’d probably give Wish a 5/10 at most. It’s not a terrible movie, per se, but is just so unoriginal, bland and forgettable that I almost wish it *was* bad so I at least had something to remember it for, like with Chicken Little. I’m glad that you enjoyed it and I don’t fault anyone else who does. But after leaving the theater, I just knew I wouldn’t remember anything about this movie after seeing it. And knowing that Disney is capable of far better than this, I wish (heh) that they would shoot for the stars instead of settling for mediocrity like they currently are.
I always felt that they actually wrote the story FIRST, THEN they put in the allusions and callbacks. The one that I can make comparisons is with Epic Mickey, in its allusions fits in thematically.
I feel putting in so many references takes out any original values and instead, makes the movie look dated. Maybe not in the levels of 2022's rescue rangers or a new legacy, but still un needed

Wish may not be on par with Disney's greatest films of all time it's more of a fine mid tier movie from the legendary studio it's better than what some people are saying and it's all there just needed another go on the writing and songs as finally a positive review that's not just saying it's Disney's worst. Two years that we have to wait, but hey re working the film can come with a great catch. A delayed movie is better than a rushed movie (examples include Frozen 2 or Trolls 3).
Finally! A good review of Wish! I’ve never seen it in full, since it’s not on Disney+ yet,but it is very good from what i’ve seen. Magnifico is the first non-twist villain in years,Star is cute and funny, and the others, like Valentino, are also pretty good. There may be a flaw or 2 in this, but I’d say the 100 year wait was worth it! I absolutely hate all of the criticism behind it.
I really enjoy this movie. I was hoping this film would be at the very least lots of fun, and that's what I got. It works as long as you don't think about the references, it does somewhat work. So, I can see myself coming back to this. So, I'd say watching it was worth it.

If ya already seen "Once Upon a Studio", then I won't spoil the credits of various cameos near the very end. The only " Last Wish"' anyone can make Is none other then Timmy Turner himself or at least Tigger In his "Wishing' Well.
My prediction for the top best and worst of 2023: Worst: 5. The Magicians Elephant 4. Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken 3. The Monkey King 2. Trolls: Band Together 1. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever Best: 5. Elemental 4. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget 3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 2. Nimona 1. The Boy and the Heron Honorable Mentions: Least bad: 4. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3. Leo 2. Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie 1. Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie Least of the Best: 4.TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 3. Under the Boardwalk 2. Wish 1. Migration

Finally, Someone agrees that this movie is good
Since you said you didn't want to mention all the references, here are some of my favorites:
- Of course the watercolor-like effect is a nod to Sleeping Beauty as you mentioned, but that's not all!
“I let you live here for free and I don’t even charge you rent” that’s the good song 🎵 you like?
@@Jarod-vg9wq yeah, I guess. Don’t ask me how, the song’s just catchy. Like I said bruh, no credentials here 😂
The animation is literally just cgi with cel shading. Nothing new to stand out from the competition.
ua-cam.com/video/kOIJPprv_FE/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared proof that this movie is terrible
Yeah me too i definitely hate Disney wish movie sorry but matt suppose to be hated this movie
(even the original ideas.)
It's saving grace is it's animation at least,I I pretty much loved what it was trying to do, I know it's trying to mimic the cel animation replica of the 90s and 2000s, it would work very well if it was 2d animation with bits of cg (same goes for encanto).
Or maybe it's just a medicore movie.
@@kittykittybangbang9367
Yeah, maybe overtime Wish will be seen as a cult classic like Megamind and hopefully it will over shadow Encanto!

I’ve been a big fan of Disney movies and shows throughout my life, and despite everything other critics have said, I still want to see this film for myself
As you’ve said, it may not be perfect, but it might be good for what it is
I thought Wish was pretty good as both a film and a celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary.
What about reviving “the search for Mickey Mouse”

18:32 I got a feeling Wish and Elemental are going to be tied at a certain spot in AniMat's top 5 best animated films of 2023 list
Even Nimona and Spider Verse will be tied too!
Wow. Despite this film’s mixed reception, AniMat gave this film the benefit of the doubt.
Are you going to say "Seriously, what's going on with some of the audience?"
It is not like Animat isn't giving bad ratings to films that people liked.
Interesting... I hadn't thought of it that way.@@rosverlegaspo6752
The critics have become miserable and cynical for too long.
I really like this movie, and I hope the film itself will make a comeback in the box office, like what Elemental did.
Hot take: I cried so hard during the ending and the credits especially when they showed all the Disney Characters.😭
Honesty the best ending to an animated movie this year! ⭐️ 🥹
I was in awe of the collection of characters that we grew up with during the credits. It’s quite a sight to behold.
My hot take- I love art style because it reminds me of stained-glass/medieval painting
@@SpacialRend7The credits forgot to represent The Rescuers, The Black Cauldron, and Meet the Robinsons.
Finally a film higher than a 7!
A bias one
Today, we're going to be reviewing Walt Disney's newest animated feature Wish.🌟
Let's see if this Film is worthy of honoring the studio's BIG 100.
(7/10) The Story
(10/10) The Animation
(8/10) The Characters
(10/10) The Songs
I Give Wish (9/10) It. Was worth it for it's 100 Yearrs Celebration
A 9/10 is high praise! Glad to hear that you had a great time with this movie.
But i prefer the movies by John Lasester especially those he didn't do originally
@@Musicradio77NetworkWhere was he wrong? Because he gave Wish a 9/10?
That's an opinion not a fact.
I love it. The message, the acting, the music the colors, and the animation was a total win. . Take the kids and go see it.❤💯😍😍😍😍
I really love I’m a Star. In fact, I always feel motivated whenever I listen to it.
They’re like Luma from Super Mario Galaxy :3
The Star is Cute, but I still prefer the Discarded Star Boy!
@@omundodovini3774 That scrapped version of the character does look good, ngl.
But also Starboy is a young version of Grandpa Sabino. And he falls in love with Asha. It's disgusting.
I'm glad you liked it. This review is a breath of fresh air from all of the unfair hate that this movie gets despite not being necessarily a masterpiece. I hope it does well at the box office.
lol
It's hard to find reviewers nowadays that don't leech to toxic negativity or use the word "woke" 24/7.
@@HollywoodLego Tell me about it.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is also a simple story, but that was never a detriment against it.

@@Pineabble 200 references in Wish, or in Enchanted?
@gamestation2690 In wish. Although from what I've read in a news article, it's actually between 100-150 references, in-jokes and nods to Disney history.

Where did Disney go wrong?
@@gamestation2690 Well, here's the thing.
When Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse came out in 2018, it took animation to a whole new level.
Frozen 2 (2019) was not as good as the first Frozen (2013), but it still beat the original as the highest-grossing animated film ever (Not counting Lion King Remake)
Things were getting worse for Disney by the time COVID came around. Onward (2020) was Pixar's first box office bomb since The Good Dinosaur (2015)
Raya (2021) was good to many people, and possibly Ecanto (2021). Meanwhile, Soul (2020), Luca (2021), and Turning Red (2022) were on Disney+
Strange World and Lightyear were box office bombs in 2022.

That would be cool!

What's original and bland about it?
The Disney references in this movie are through the roof XD
Nowhere near as much references as Ralph Breaks the internet or The huge amount of Warner Bros pandering in (the now sadly, topical) Space Jam 2.
