    I’m 38yo and a first time GTI owner. I get more attention in the GTI than my Mustang GT. With all the random people waving and acknowledging me, I thought there was a GTI wave, like being on a motorcycle or Jeep Wrangler. I love my 23 GTI-S. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. The new MK8 is sleeker and meaner than any previous GTI before. The infotainment system is easy to use and becomes very familiar with the few drives.

    • @HoodSlappersOfficial
      @HoodSlappersOfficial  2 роки тому +1

      As far as we know there is no official wave, that’s not to say that it doesn’t happen. Especially when you’re driving in the newer and very noticeable mk8 body style. It is a brilliant machine and checks every box. Enjoy your GTI. You deserve it.

Been eye balling the new 2022, but will stay on the sidelines to see what VW does with a refresh to address some driver interface issues. I've been a huge fan of GTI's and Golf's in general ever since I was a child. To date, I've owned 1 Mk5 Rabbit, 1 Mk7 Golf Sportwagen and 2 GTI's. Currently, I drive a 2022 MK8 GTI and love it!! Spectacular review guys. Let me fill you in on what GTI means, a lot of people ask this question and it's not something VW really advertises so I don't blame you for not knowing. GTI simply stands for Grand Touring (or Tourer) Injection. It's basically a term to signify direct fuel injected engines and the naming "GTI" has actually been used across many brands over the years and the very first manufacturer to use it was Maserati. However, VW popularized it 1976 with the very first GTI! Now, the term GTI is synonymous with a Golf. They no longer need to use "Golf" or "Rabbit" in the naming scheme for a GTI because when people hear GTI, they know it's a golf! At this point, no other manufacturer really uses the term because everyone knows what a true GTI is!! Hope that helps :)

    I've just come across this review, and like many who have already commented, I disagree that the GTI should have a cut off age. I'm in my 5th decade now, and ever since I passed my driving test in the late 80's I've wanted a GTI, however, growing up on the other side of the pond (UK), owning, insuring and running a GTI was not attainable at the time.
    Now, however, I have the funds to be able to do that, and my name is down for a 2023 GTI Autobahn (for the exact same reasons described in the video) - DIY gearbox, Atlantic Blue with the wheels, sounds and sunroof package (just wanted the upgraded stereo but unable to just get that - which is a shame in my opinion), delivery slated for this time next year, which will be ideal as the lease on my 2020 GLI will be coming to an end.
    It is in my opinion, one of the best looking cars on the market, and I'm taking this opportunity to get a manual hatchback with enough licence losing power to enjoy. Also, and not mentioned in the video, the power is available running it on 87 Octane and with the way fuel prices are going, that will save a few $$$ at the pumps over the life of the car.

      @@HoodSlappersOfficial Boys the issue is I wanted a fun “all rounder daily”. In Canada dealing with the winters the awd would be an advantage. Having a low 4sec 0-60 time would mean a great car for the occasional track day. Being a Golf super practical. I’m 52 years old, have a Land Rover Discovery and have had two Range Rovers before it. I want a fun daily and a car that wouldn’t make me look like a “yob” driving it. Test drove the Civic type R and yes it’s an amazing car, but I’m sorry, that car definitely has an age limit. The GTi and the R just seem to fly under the radar and appear to be the perfect “sleeper”. Am I wrong in thinking that? The offerings from BMW are nice, but “shouty”, they scream “hey look at me in my super cool BMW”!!! Merc, no, Audi, well that’s a lot more money for essentially a similar car to the R, but the R seems like more fun for less money. Now the GTi is the question mark. My dad owned one way back in the 80’s and I remember the whole family fighting for the keys because it was so much fun. The new one? That’s why I wanted your opinion.

    Been daily driving a 2013 MK6 base GTI (that I bought new) for exactly 10 years now. About to surpass the 200,000 mile mark (322,000km) and it's been incredibly reliable and a pleasure to own and drive. The 204hp 2.0 burns 1 quart (0.9L) of oil every 8,000 miles (13,000km). Honestly, not too bad at all. I change the DSG fluid every 50-70K miles, although VW suggests more frequent changes. The OEM battery and two ignition coils...that's the sum total of parts that have failed on this car in 10 years. Last year I noticed the idle was getting rough, so I pulled the intake manifold, replaced the factory injectors with OEM units and cleaned the valves as they were horribly dirty (direction injection). The cleaner valves and new injectors made the car idle and run like new again. Very tempting to buy a new 2023+ GTI.

      Honestly, I was interested in the 2022 and already looked at one. The massive change for the driver interface has turned me away for the time being. If Volkswagen does decide to make the necessary logical changes during the next couple of years then I will revisit. I also looked at a 2022 Mazda 3 turbo hatch and was very impressed. It’s somewhat different than the GTI, but the interior is first class and you get so much more for the money. I found a handful of the 2022s in my area, granted I live in NYC, already for sale.
    Had a hunch. Called up the owners. Same response. The interior feels like hard plastic rental cars. But the biggest issue, we know what it is, that ridiculous info-tainment system with the lack of real buttons. While a couple mentioned the cheap interior. Every single one mentioned how miserably frustrating it was to use the info-tainment system. One guy almost broke down and cried over the phone when he told me that he had a chance to get a new MK7.5 for a good deal, but foolishly decided to wait and get the MK8 instead.

      Hey thanks for the comment. Everyone has a favourite GTI. No doubt about it. The mk8 is not without its issues. The light at the end of the tunnel is that VW is bringing out a software update sometime in the first quarter of next year that will fix the biggest issue…that pesky screen. The slide and haptic controls are easy to use once you get the hang of it. All in all, it’s hard to go wrong with a GTI.

    • @HoodSlappersOfficial
      @HoodSlappersOfficial  2 роки тому +2

      Great question. It doesn’t have the 4Motion all wheel drive like the GolfR, but with a good set of snow tires the GTI is still very good in the snow. And because of snow, we would recommend the manual. :). There won’t be many manuals in the future so we would partly suggest going that route for a chance to drive a manual on last time, the other reason being it’s a fun manual to drive. Very smooth, 6 gears, a Golf ball feel shift knob. There is something about it that is so fantastic.
      The DSG is faster and will cause less issue in stop and go traffic, but that manual is well worth the few stop go situation. Plus it gives a little grunt when put into 1st gear. Who doesn’t like that?

      Thanks for the reply. According to VW, the 2022 GTI has a 0 to 60 time of 6.2 seconds which is even longer than the mrk7. What is interesting though, is the car as a whole gives a better driving experience. The 2022 lap time at Volkswagen’s Ehra test facility was 4 seconds faster. Thanks for keeping the conversation going. Do you drive a mrk7?

      Yea. We’ve heard that a fair bit. Here in Canada it’s illegal to mark up a car over MSRP. It sounds like things are different in the U.S. It sounds like automotive brands are starting to react, but we will see if they do anything. Fingers crossed.

    Volkswagen really diluted the hot hatch formula.
    An electronic parking brake? Seriously? That’s sacrilege!
    Capacitive touch buttons? Really?!
    No volume knob? For real?!
    No illuminated instrument slider buttons? WTF?
    Non-removable front headrests?? What are y’all thinking!!!???

      That electronic parking break seems to becoming the norm. It’s too bad. As the lads on The Grand Tour argued against them because of it was the end of the power slide. Too bad.

    The temperature controls are not an issue, all you got to say is, hey Volkswagen temperature 22 and so on, the voice will say no problem setting temperature. You can even ask it to turn on the heated seats and heated steering wheel. Don’t have to touch anything. Problem solved.
