    All: Just to clarify, these radios DO NOT contain any US military cryptographic technology. They contain exportable crypto like AES256 same as your web browser and Citadel which is "exportable". If these radios were the AN/PRC-160, AN/PRC-150 or AN/PRC-117G then that would be bad. But these are not. They are NATO/Civilian versions, RF-7800H, RF-5800H and RF-7800M. These are fully legal to own in the US. Of course, I could not ship them outside of the US as that would be a violation of ITAR (without the correct paperwork). I hope this clears things up. Nice Haul !!! Great condition. I was on the (L3)Harris Falcon II and Falcon III teams that wrote DSP code, FPGA code and crypto code for many different Wide band and narrow band voice and data waveforms on all 3 of those radios plus the VHF radios for 12 years up until 5 years ago. These must be the export-safe crypto versions not the CCI type 1 ITAR crypto versions or they have cheater crypto cards which completely bypass an actual crypto. In any event, it will be fun watching videos of you operating these. Enjoy !

    I used to help look after Harris broadcast transmitters and associated equipment, back in the days of the Harris Intertype Corporation. Pretty rugged gear, with some design features which tested our abilities and sense of humor from time to time! It's good to see Harris continuing, and turning out products of such high caliber.

    Can you tell me about the longevity of LCD displays in Harris equipment? From personal Hamfest experience commercial/amateur equipment from the 70s/80s era with LCD displays is often unusable. The displays "dry out"? I guess spares might be available, but Harris are unlikely to stock spares for equipment no longer actively used by commercial/military customers... I. wonder about the longevity of modern equipment using TFT and oled displays as well... Replacing caps in vintage equipment is one thing, but LCD displays...

    • @w2hx
      @w2hx  8 місяців тому

      I don't think I've ever seen a bad LCD or have one go bad on a piece of harris equipment. But I dont put these through the rigors of combat so I can't be certain. The only thing I can say is some of the older harris LCD equipment (80's-90s') used EL backlighting instead of LED and sometimes those backlights get dim. Otherwise I've been pleased with how the LCDs hold up. 73

Have searched on the net for some time and have not seen anything like this batch of radios for sale. So I just emailed Harris asking if it's possible to purchase new directly from them for Ham use. Why not ask LOL So let's see what they reply. I'll post the reply here when I receive it. Can't even guess at what the price would be if they would sell to me... 73 K1KSC

    Is it Christmas already ? 😬I have been collecting military radios and aircraft instruments for years, prices have been going up and up, on ebay at least. Back if the 2000's I was able to get incredible deals, down to 1 euro for a nice item ! Nowadays getting good prices is really difficult, requires patience and hours of tedious browsing of ebay categories, to find the cheap item poorly described, placed in the wrong category, and sold by someone who found it in grand pa's garage and just wants to get rid of it.

    You'll be ready to communicate during Armageddon, but I plan on leaving with my uppertaker prior to then. Have fun with the Zombies.
    My FT-857D radios will do the job until then.
    I do understand the appeal of military gear, but I find them too constraining and less organic than portable amateur radio gear.
    If your radios haven't been neutered too bad you could have fun mesh networking fairly easily. Perhaps a remote controlled zombie killing Armageddon battle wagon.

      @@w2hx I see. What “Waveforms”(which I assume is a fancy term for what we in the amateur world call “Modes”, which I assume is a stack of protocols) would these radios use for networking? Do these waveforms use special networking protocols or do they just plop the IP stack above layer 1?

      @@w2hx I see! Very interesting! Never thought military spec networking waveforms use IP… I thought they’d use some black magic. Also, what networking waveforms do these radios support? I’ve heard of ANW or something like that.
