TTY Loop Control Panel Part 2

In this video I build and test a current loop control panel for the teletype equipment. I have been using the HAL ST-6 terminal unit to supply loop current to my teletype setup. This worked ok but there were two issues with this. First, there are times when I want to use other terminal units that may not have a built-in loop supply. Second, the ST-6 was never meant to power as many devices as I...

Man thats some expensive stuff!
Not too bad on the 2nd hand market if you are patient.
@w2hx I wish, lol. I think the last time I saw someone selling a Harris HF man pack, they wanted 8K for it. I might get lucky and find a Barrett HF man pack for half the price but of course, it's not the same. Would be cool if Harris made software or made a display to connect to the data port to get some kind of spectrum scope
@@johnkeo358 The RF-7850M-HH handheld firmware 6.0 and above, has a web interface. Through that you can see a spectrum plot from 30-512 MHz.
@@w2hx that's pretty neat. I was using the handhelds for work back in the early 2000s. We had the HF manpacks but never used them or never really needed to use them, I should say.
Hello, is KDU 12113-1000-01 sold on online store?
definitely not, unfortunately!
Been a user of this radio...So envy to have this on my own...but sadly im not qualified to have even one
Cool video! I used the PRC-132 as a radio operator on a US Army, six-man, long range surveillance team in 1992-93. Prior to the 132, we used the PRC-104. We utilized the DMDG (digital message device group) to compose and digitize messages to send over HF. The 132 was a nice upgrade to the 104, but the 104 was much easier to pack. It fit perfectly in the radio pocket of the Army’s large rucksack. The 132 was oddly shaped, especially with the battery box attached to the bottom. You had to put it in the middle of the rucksack and pack all of your gear around it. This made changing the batteries a pain, because you had to unpack the whole ruck to get to the battery box. With the 104, you just pulled it out of the radio pocket. Anyway, good times! 73, KB3AOL
Very cool! Where does one find one of these?
random stuff on ebay!
The battery doesnt have to be working. If theres a built in current bypass the device would work as long as power is connected to it. Some bypass functions require a connected battery to work, doesnt matter if the battery is completely dead and cant hold a charge.
@zipp4everyone263 yes thanks for your comments. The radio does indeed work with no battery connected to the charger. Thanks
Good job
Very cool Harris they make killer 📻 radios
Please include a video explaining how to program the RF7800 VHF
How to program RF7800 VHF please and thank you
We'll be thankful it's a superheat. Time for some troubleshooting. When you tune is there any meter deflection on signals? That would point more toward the audio chain.
I sold it before I tried to fix it. But I don't think it is a superhet. I think it is a direct conversion dsp. But I could be wrong 😊
@@w2hx It's a double/triple conversion superhet. Interesting facts is the WJ can't compete in dynamic range with modern rigs, but at the same time, its mixer alone cost as much as most entire radios.
@@Kibwunga a check of the spec sheet verifies you are, of course, correct! Looks like the dsp is after the final if stage. Thanks!
This brought me back 15 years ago. Thank you for posting!
so how did you fix it?
never did! It is buried somewhere in the shed. Sorry
Hi Eugene, I am looking at an MR3000H for sale. This one is limited 1.5-108 MHz, while I need the airband in reception. Theoretically it should be the MR3000U. Could you please tell me if you can receive 118 to 134 MHz on yours even without the external amplifier ? TX is not important. Many thanks and best regards from Switzerland Mark
Was hoping for some information. I got myself a 12500-2500-0X and was hoping for information on a charger. Please advise VE3NKO
Life is not fair at all...
The oil in the motor has dried up. The motor needs to be lubricated. What looks like a ball bearing on the front left and right side of the motor are actually lubrication points. There are also two others on the back of the motor. They’re spring loaded so push them in a little bit and drop a few drops of machine oil in each side then turn the motor over by hand until it frees up. That will loosen up the motor enough to start it up. While running under power, push the ball bearings in again and drip a few more drops of oil in. I was a teletype repairmen for many years.
Hi @billmaak, thanks for your comments. You are correct! See video here: ua-cam.com/video/1RH6fGVnIlk/v-deo.html
What he refers to as a tape puncher is actually called a perforator. I repaired models 28 and 35 Teletypes from 1970 until they were replaced by model 40’s which were much faster line printers. The sound of an operating teletype is music to my ears, especially when operating at 100 WPM. They were an impressive electro mechanical machine.
Do you have a RF-7800 slice by chance? Thanks, Mike
I have a few, but they are not for sale at this time. 73
Thanks for the response.
You mentioned that time synchronisation was used for FH mode, I know you can set up a FH net without any GPS modules. But perhaps when they don't have an accurate time source they just pick the time of the FH master. But it doesn't sit right with me, those clocks would drift over the day, I had imagined they sync someway when you key the handset. The figure for the FH rate I have in mind was 109 hops per sec, but don't have a source for that. Its interesting when compared with Bluetooth which hops at 1600 hops per sec. Very interesting subject would love to get my hands on surplus kit.
Hi John. You can enter the Time of Day. It only needs to be within 4 minutes of the other radios in the NET. So even if they drift, to drift more than 4 minutes would take decades!
I had one years ago. It is a very exciting transmitter!
indeed!
rx ok but tx problem how to solve
sorry I don't know the problem.
harris rf falcon 3 transmission problem
Oh God! Thank you. I have not watched and listened to model 28 machines since I was Radioman 2nd, Teletype repairman, Submarine Squadron 14, Holly Loch, Scotland.1969 - 1971.
Wow. So cool you actually worked with them back in the day. Submarine Squadron? Wow. very cool. I have some other tty vids to look out for. Thank you for your service! 73
I've got one of these too. It used to be my father's terminal in the rec room used over an acoustic coupler to do some work remotely on the mainframe back at the office. Later on his company repurposed it as a line printer in the server room, and when it became surplus to requirements - they gave it to me if I could haul it out of there. I held on to it for the 20-plus years since and just resurrected it last year with a new ribbon and a good cleanup. Works perfectly as a serial printer and a serial printing terminal. Too bad tractor feed paper is so expensive now. We used to get boxes and boxes of it from my father's work.
Hey Chance. Very interesting. Other than milradios, do you have any vintage computers? That is another interest of mine. Yes I sprung for some on Amazon. Too $$$. The stuff used to be dirt cheap. In the computer rooms I worked, we'd go through a box a day practically. 73 de w2hx
@@w2hx Yes, I seem to have picked up all the expensive hobbies -- military vehicles, military radios, mil-GPS, analog broadcast video...and some vintage computer tech. My father worked in the mainframe / dumb terminal era so I learned a lot from him doing installations. I managed to work out everything on an old ex-military Miltope-labelled HP9000/382 and now have it booting on its original HPUX installation/ drive as well as an image on BlueSCSI. And it's hooked into my Ethernet network with a 10 Base 2/ 10 Base T converter. I also talk to it with one of the old ADP-branded DEC VT420s serially (and can with the DEC LA120 but there's some weird printhead issue causing the lower half of characters to print too lightly.) I've also got a really rare DOS-only laptop from the early days of the UK's BOWMAN development...with its 'CROSSBOW' labelling still intact from that earlier, defunct consortium. It's basically been relegated to repgrogramming old Motorola handhelds ('real' serial port issues/ UARTs) and talking to my old Micom XF. Anyhow - great videos. One day I'll be able to scare up some 7800 stuff but not without a major raise :)
Nice setup stunning and checking out your other content
thanks! Please subscribe as this winter I will have a ton of content coming out on projects on the land rover. 73
where would i have to go to find these sincgars/harris radios? i found some rf5800s on ebay but they are all sold as "dummy radios"
you can buy it all from me. send me contact info. tx
@@w2hx idk how to send a private messages on youtube lol
@@beesechurger8693 I'm good in QRZ.
I am speaking from pure jealousy, but seriously go f&^^ yourself having the money to afford this shit.
To use the contact cleaner did you just spray directly into the switch? I got one of these intending to make a desk clock but its a little glitchy
Never got around to it. I ended up picking up an M877 which has buttons instead of toggles. But I would spray a tiny amount of DeOxit down the shaft of the toggle, then work the toggle several dozen times to let the deoxit work in. Good luck!
Holy freakin money
No microphones. Useless. Unuseable.
funny!

Nice 7239E. We have a new one at my unit I've yet to test and about 30 old ones that are banged up and I'll have to repair at some point. Nice to see these equipment outside of the military, always though they were cool.

For the green 7850m HH, I’ve seen two models or generations, one that looks like the one you have and one that has a bigger speaker shape. Do you know when they changed/updated the body shape/speaker and if there are any major differences between those models or if they are basically the same
@TyMorgan412 hmmm. I do not know. Maybe a picture would help? Also I think the 7825M-HH speaker might look different. Perhaps that is what you saw.

What are you even doing!? Using military gear for anything other then war is an exercise in futility.OH you have a SINGCARS mount? Single-Channel Air/Ground - I don't think those radios can be adapted. I also know an indvidual who was involved in the development of that technology. BTW - I have an encryption module for the radio your using. It's not programmed obviously but if you self program it Putin will never know what your saying!! Cough. Legal to Own... Not so much to use.
Hi there. I have an interest in Naval radio equipment as well! Check out my videos. Let me know what models you have (URT-23? etc)? Most of the stuff in this video is 2000 and later. But Sincgars as a system dates back for sure. As for adapting, we use them extensively on the 6 meter ham band (50-54 MHz) without problem. 73!
Nice haul

Hello! Have you ever tested the dipole antenna that comes with the Man Pack version with this coupler? I know that the dipole has a BNC connector and the coupler has a N connector. I will buy an adaptor so i can connect both. Do you think that will work? (The dipole is a 50hm antenna?) Sorry for my english. Best regards!
