@@needsajob69 "They want to destroy private property for the sake of skating one rail." "I don't know if I would've done that personally..." Skating street is comprised almost entirely of destroying private property. Must've been the kid blocking the main feature at the park and snaking all the locals.
@@needsajob69 I'd have to rewatch for particulars, but I remember just enjoying it for being a piece of skateboarding media in a more "professional" context. FUEL tv was still on the air, but I wanted all the skateboarding content I could get. I was in my late teens or early 20's, and the storyline was relatable enough to get me juiced. I'm sure there's cheesy scenes in it, but realistically you need some cheese to get that emotional investment going, and if you cringe a bit that means you're hooked and empathetic to the characters enough to care. Seeing the Tampa AM climax and all the skating leading up to it reminded me of Tony Hawks Underground, which was arguably the best game in the franchise as well. Also, this was definitely a better film than GRIND was. "Super Duper Skateboards" hahaha
I get that. I can see this, at the time, being a more “grounded” skateboarding movie, as far as - there being actual pro skaters, showing what the lifestyle is like, and how traveling to competitions/getting footage is the job, so to speak. Grind is way more of a Hollywood, goofy type of movie, but I think the self awareness of that is why I like it a lot more. At least that movie has a fun, carefree aspect to it, and it doesn’t try to be anything else. The reason I had a swell time shitting all over this movie is because the filmmakers tried to force a story around some legitimate skateboarding clips and montages. Basically: what is the point of this movie? The story isn’t very compelling, the characters aren’t believable, and in the end, as I said in the video, I felt nothing for any of it. Other than how awkward a lot of it is. I’d rather just watch a great skateboarding video like Baker 3, Elementality Vol. 1, or Almost Round 3. I’d love to hear what you think of it now because nostalgia can be very powerful. Some stuff holds up, some not so much. Either way, I love talking about this stuff, and I appreciate your comments and thoughts on this!
Nah man this movie is legendary. I can get over the corniness / bad movie making cus it’s such a fun watch. Especially if you grew up skating in the era when all these guys were your heros
Dude this is the best modern street skateboarding movie there is !!!! Lords of dog town is OG AF but takes place in the 60s - 70s North Hollywood movie & mid 90s are completely trash !!!!! Wassup Rockers is dope but doesn’t have too much skating … Overall for modern street skating … street dreams is the best !!! It also came out when street skating was still underground
True! I can see that, that’s dope that it’s so loved among the skateboarding community despite all these things that I said in the video. You’re all making me appreciate everything else about it honestly. 🤘🏻
also when you said there isn't a lot of story at the end, I think you might have to be a skateboarder to understand that the skateboarding does pretty much all the worthwhile storytelling in the movie.
That’s what I’m seeing from the comments here haha but I get that, it’s dope that the skateboarding is legit. This video basically covers everything that isn’t the skateboarding, I guess, but that part of the movie is definitely good.
Bro finally someone says it. Everyone hyped this movie up to be better than Mid90s and I was so disappointed when I watched it. Also you're funny asf so dubs
Haha thanks man, yeah I was surprised to see a lot of these comments defending it because it’s a pretty bad movie. But the skateboarding is legit, so I guess that’s what everyone likes about it. Appreciate you man!
Compared to North Hollywood this movie is the Schindler's List of skateboarding movies. GRIND still reigns supreme. Early 2000s shlock that knows exactly what it’s trying to be- a dumb skateboarding movie
@@needsajob69oh it’s hot garbage. To me it calls into the “so bad it’s good” category. It’s so funny- but not in the way they were intending, which makes it a fun movie to laugh at. I at least give it props for following a real 3-act structure, and doing a pretty okay job of showing the perspective of pressure and that sort of “you vs. yourself” mentality when battling a trick, especially at a contest. Referring to the slow mo sequence before he does the NAC. Bonus points for coining the timeless abbreviation “NAC”, no tre crook will ever be the same because of this movie. I guess that could be seen as a bad thing, making such a hard trick a comedic punch line, but I think it’s hilarious how skate culture has still held onto that from this movie.
Haha I’ll check it out for sure! And I couldn’t agree more. This movie 100 percent is a good bad movie. I had fun watching it, oddly enough. But it lends itself to so many things that we can joke about, and that’s why I wanted to make this video. I love skateboarding and movies so much, and this was such a weird trip of an experience. But yeah, wow, this movie has a lot of imperfections. And I’m okay with that haha
Bruh dis a skateboarding movie made for skaters so ur movie critiques for street dreams is irrelevant because this isn’t just a regular movie for random civilians to enjoy its made for skaters to enjoy ask any skater this movie is a classic
The movie has bad writing and is on par with high school play acting but it’s also a nostalgic inside joke for most skaters. This review didn’t need to be made. The fans of this movie’s know this isn’t cinema genius but it’s not why we like it lol.
Your review on this movie is so irrelevant it’s ridiculous. 😂💀 it was made by true skater for true skaters. It wasn’t meant to win an Oscar. It’s not the best movie but to true skaters it’s gold. That’s why rob payed to make the movie with his own company instead of taking it to Hollywood. 🤷♂️
It's actually kind of a miracle I haven't seen this bc I would watch a movie just for Ryan Dunn. I have to assume that I did look at this movie in 2009, saw Rob was in it, and never thought of it again. I really avoided him like the plague back then, guy really has no charisma imo. You think he'd at least be cute but no. Anyway now I'm done roasting him. Enjoyed the movie break down btw.
Haha I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think I found it on Ryan Dunn's IMDb after going down memory lane with Haggard and the CKY videos recently. So I was like "fuck it, watch it for Dunn." It was worth seeing just to make this video about it, but it is a rough watch, for me.
Well if you look above, you’ll see the review I made and uploaded here onto UA-cam. It talks about the imperfections of the movie: mainly the acting, writing, direction, and overall thematic elements. While other people in the comments section would like to defend this movie like it’s their newborn baby, their nostalgia is like a blanket of comfort that prevents them from seeing how much of a piece of shit this movie really is. Also, I love skateboarding culture and everything about it, that’s why I watched this in the first place. But it’s like they threw something together and didn’t care if it was even watchable.
Yeah, North Hollywood looks pretty rough haha might do a video about that one if I can force myself to watch it. And mid90s is super overrated too. To be honest, sure, maybe this isn’t the worst skateboarding movie ever, but it’s a pretty rough watch haha
One thing im not gonna do is take recommendations from a guy that hasnt stepped a foot on a skateboard
