    I have a question ... if starship using methalox as a fuel, how do they maintain the cryogenic temp on their tank while in the outer space for long time?
    Coz normally, spacecraft uses hypergolic fuel in long-duration missions. Such as dragon, Apollo, space shuttle etc.

    • @aerostorm_
      @aerostorm_ 2 роки тому +1

      It hasn't been fully discussed yet, but there are two approaches to this.
      One is to have an active compression system, like a refrigerator and possibly powered by solar, that allows small parts of higher pressure fuels to be compressed to maintain the cryogenic temperatures.
      The other is to have a passive/semi powered cooling system using what infrared dissipation cooling you can with cryogenic fuels in space.
      Overall to begin with there is some expected fuel loss, which is why the fuel depot Starship for the lunar missions is expected to have itself fueled within a month with some margin.
      Though in the Human Landing System report NASA was apparently confident in whatever solution SpaceX had with fuel loss mitigation as it cited this as a technology problem with the Dynetics lander, another competitor, but not Starship.

    • @aaronmcculloch8326
      @aaronmcculloch8326 2 роки тому

      They will use the header tanks, smallish tanks within the tanks for landing on Mars, they can be a bit better insulated. A tank in a tank doesn't have to worry about sunshine warming it, and they can vent out the main tanks to hard vacuum during the flight, making it basically a vacuum flask. Because of that efficiency they can either add extra fuel and vent it as it evaporates or add a powered recovery system. to the best of my knowledge they haven't made any design choices on this yet, since it's not mission critical for the current phase of testing. I assume the rate of heat transfer and the mass of the required recovery system both need to be well understood before you can pick the best way.
