Heart Disease and Social Security Disability

- What type of heart disease will qualify you for Social Security. As I discuss in this video, Social Security’s chronic heart failure listing is very broad and many disability claimants with cardiac disease will meet the requirements of this listing.
Most of Social Security’s listed impairments are described very narrowly, but the cardiac listing describes a wide variety of heart problems. Social Security clearly understands that disability applicants who are struggling with heart disease would have a very difficult time working.
Even if you do not meet a listing, you may still qualify using a functional capacity argument or under the grid rules. Please reach out to me if you have any questions about how to qualify for disability based on heart disease or any other serious medical condition.

Thank you for making these videos. I am a 55 years old male and for the last 16 years I worked as an over the road truck driver until January 2020 when I ended up in the emergency room with severe chest pain and trouble breathing. I ended up having a triple bypass surgery that resulted in a sternum nonunion. For almost a year I kept complaining about having excruciating chest pain just to be told by the family doctor and the cardiologist that it is normal after an open heart surgery. I applied for disability and I was denied twice. I changed my doctors and the new ones discovered the sternum nonunion condition that led to another surgery to fix the problem. I received a donor bone graft along with some plates on my sternum but months later my chest bone is still cracked and moving around. Meanwhile, I hired an attorney to represent me with the disability case. I definitely need to have another reconstructive surgery that according to the surgeon will be more extensive than the previous ones but the out coming it’s not promising at all. I’m very depressed, I have panic attacks and anxiety on top of the severe chest pain that I have to live with for the past two and a half years. I can not drive at all because of the broken chest nor do any other activities. I never thought that the sternum is such an important bone in the human body. The prescribed Hydrocodone doesn’t help much and the depression medications turned me into a zombie. I’m afraid to go have a third surgery especially after I was told that most likely I might have more discomfort with it. On December 16, 2022 I am scheduled to have the disability hearing with the judge (video) at the courthouse though the judge will be in a different city. I am very nervous and my attorney didn’t prepare me much. What can I do to prepare for the hearing and do you think that I have a good chance to be approved? I haven’t worked since January 2020 when I had the triple bypass surgery and I know that I am not able to do any work no matter how hard I would try. My chest hurts nowadays even when I breathe or just talk. I’m a mess physically and mentally but also very scared about the upcoming hearing. I don’t have any faith in the system anymore. Anticipating your answer, I thank you again.
Dorin, I have a playlist of videos about how to prepare for your hearing. It appears that the medical evidence in your case is very solid so you should focus on testimony where you talk about the practical issues you face with day to day functioning.
@@ssdattorney thank you for the prompt response and advice. I had my hearing and I don’t think it went well. The judge gave my attorney 30 days to submit my last cardiologist visit record before making a decision. She asked me how come I didn’t quit smoking to help with the healing process. I mean, come on, from 3-4 packs a day I’m down to less than a pack a day. Take my cigarettes away and I literally don’t have anything left to help with the stress. Also the vocational expert found two jobs that the judge hypothetically asked but there is no way I could do any work. These people are nuts! What part of Sternum Nonunion can’t they understand? I’m so tired of living with pain 24/7. Maybe some day I will be strong enough to go away forever. Thanks again counselor.
I have a stage 3 heart block with sinus pause had a double lead pacemaker inserted in my heart and found a heart murmur from the left side that pumps oxygen in my blood Oct 25 2024 and applied for disability last year in October when I was diagnosed with 95 percent left carotid artery block social security hasn't responded or sent any information
I have a CHD hypoplastic left heart syndrome
Weakness of the heart muscle, such as cardiomyopathy my heart was functioning 29% and improved some with diet and medication to 35% in between to 45% from August to December I do not know if they would approve it or not .
Please speak about a heart condition called Acaos
I had LAD (widow maker), 2 stents installed. Accute heart failer. 8 months since have not heard one word from The SSDI. Sick of the system, i'll be dead by tine they make their decision on wether im disabled. How many years will it take, im running out of Life! Litterally
I am finding that claims are taking longer and longer at initial and recon. Often when I have been hired to file a claim or appeal at recon I speak with adjudicators. Some are very hard working and want to move the claims as quickliy as they can but others are very difficult to reach and don't seem to do much. In those cases I will reach out to a supervisor and that can move things along. Go to www.ssa.gov/locator/ to get the number for the field office handling your claim and start calling. If the adjudicator won't call you back, call the supervisor. Let me know if I can be of assistance.
I called monday and actually got a voicemail box, left message and the wonder woman called back that day, we had a very pleasant conversation and she said she was going to go ahead and push my case through "WOW", she is sending me a form to fill out and add more information about how im doing now 9 months later.
@@conductorjohnmthtrains2239 I also have cardiac issues and filed a SSDI claim back in April 2022. I have been attorney represented since day and after 27 months, I still have not been approved. I am currently in the Hearing phase for about 3 months. I have had 2 cardiac ablations and a cardiac pacemaker implanted. One good thing is that I don't have any blockage (plumbing) issues. I was diagnosed in April 2022 with CHF, A-Fib, and A-Flutter (electrical issues.) My only saving grace is that I had no (0) zero financial debt. I had about $8,000 in the bank and I had a pension and a 403(b) that I converted to a Tradional IRA. If you want SSA to speed their process, good luck. Proper financial planning or lack thereof is the only beat the SSA at their own game. You cannot depend on the Federal Government to do your financial planning. That is up to you. Also, I bought a Long Term Disability (LTD) policy. I also have an attorney for that as well. I was paid for about 8 months and then they denied my LTD claim. I had hired an attorney was back paid for my "own" and "any" occupation for my LTD claim.
Does an ICD or pacemaker bolster a case for SSDI ?
I think it does as this type of procedure would only be used for a serious heart problem. The next question, however - did the pacemaker solve the problem and restore enough function to allow for simple, entry-level work?
I have a question I filed with premier Disability in Jan 2023 and know my case is filed with SSA but I have not heard anything from premier Disability about getting my medical records or what I need to prepare for not sure what there supposed to be doing and now I’m getting a questionnaire from Social Security and not sure if they should help me fill it out
I just had 5 Artie's that were block doctor did 4bypass surgery on July 5th 2017 some people say I should apply for social security I apply on August 3 just got a call from social security we have appointment Monday 30th of October
What is 4.2
I live in Knoxville Tennessee. I had double bypass heart surgery 6 months ago and nerve damage from my surgery and also have depression and anxiety from my heart surgery. I went to my physical exam yesterday and Im afraid I will get denied. Do you take cases from Tennessee? Thank you for your videos
no name I’ve been trying to win my disability since Aug 2009 just recently denied again Nov 2019 and I don’t understand why. I have CHF,diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, HBP, damaged vision.. I’m afraid I won’t live long enough to get my disability that I’ve worked over 30yrs paying into. This disability adjudication system is set up to fail the people . I pray for a better outcome for you 🙏🏾
@@xxxits_zexxxreynolds2796do you have lawyer that could help
@@xxxits_zexxxreynolds2796 Did you ever win your case? Also, did you hire an attorney? I have the exact same conditions with addition to having a cardiac pacemaker implanted and having 2 cardiac ablations done. Please respond. Thanks!
@@mhs0407 I did, finally, last September 2021, received 2 disability payments because I applied for early retirement also when I became age eligible and so I no longer qualified for disability. It’s all a sham and a damn shame how the Govt will find ways to keep your money that you’ve paid into the system. I’m thankful for something. I wish you better returns in your journey. 🙏🏾
@@xxxits_zexxxreynolds2796 Thank you for the quick response. I have a 2nd Cardiac Ablation coming up on Tuesday and I just recently found out that one of the Cardiac leads might not be attached anymore, so we might have to take out the Pacemaker once again and reattach the lead to the right atrium. Medical bills just keep on plying up.
Hello, I live in California. I was diagnosed with Long QT syndrome and after an episode of my heart going into Vfib. I had a pacemaker with defibrillator. My question is do I qualify for SSDI. Hello I just had a triple bypass.and just filed for social security. I have a attorney helping me
Sounds like you have a good case. Good luck to you.
I got a questionnaire from social security I've had a triple bypass and since then I've had to have another surgery because one of the wires broke I'm looking at another surgery because I think another wire is broken. I will be 57 years old in June. I've got pretty severe diabetes my my last A1C was 7.8. also had back surgery probably 25 years ago. I got a questionnaire thing from social security I've got to fill it out. Didn't you write a book about filling out a questionnaire ?
I’m 55 years old and I had the very same problem in 2020. I had the second surgery to fix the sternum (donor bone to fill the gap and plates on top). I was denied twice and two weeks ago I had my hearing. Nothing yet but I don’t think it went too well. Even after the second surgery my chest bone moves around and it hurts when speaking or breathing, not to mention when I make any moves with my body. They (SSA) expect me to work in this condition. Good luck!
@@dorinkish9761 hey bud did you have an attorney helping you ? I think I've got a good one he's out of Illinois
@@beaubostick7837 yes, I do have an attorney. I hired him after my first denial.
@@dorinkish9761 good luck on your hearing. I hear it's pretty tough to get approved. I've got a pretty bad diabetes case too I don't know if that'll help or not a lot of my medicine just knocks me out. I'll take a thousand milligrams of gabapentin three times a day and it'll knock me out for 2 hours every time I take one. My neuropathy in my feet has gotten a lot worse since my open heart surgery. My lawyer seem pretty confident when he took my case he said I don't take very many cases that I know I can't win. I'm sure I'll get denied my first time. They say your age makes a big difference but I don't know.
@@beaubostick7837 good luck to you too. My attorney seemed very confident when he took my case but now, after the hearing he says there’s always an appeal, after I expressed my concern about how the hearing went. I tell you, the video hearings suck big time. The equipment kept disconnecting, the judge lost the Vocational “Expert” twice, it was just me and the lawyer in the room and the judge made us wear masks. It’s bad enough that I’m in pain while talking or breathing, I had to deal with the stupid mask too. I wish they’d send me to their doctor/specialist to decide if I can do any work or not. My surgeon says that I need a third surgery but the outcome won’t be what I expect. His exact words: “Mr. Kish, you’ll going to thank me at first and after 2-3 months you’ll going to curse me because the discomfort from more plates on your chest”. Honestly, I don’t want to have another surgery on my chest, but even with 4 (10mg each) hydrocodone a day I’m still in excruciating pain. I am also on Gabapentin and other medication that should help with the nerve damage and depression but they just turned me into a zombie. I’m sure you know how it is. I’ve had broken bones before but the sternum is the worst. I can not function at all and I am supposed to be a tough guy. Not anymore. I wish I never came back from that surgery room. And the system (SSA) treats us like we are conmen.
hey my name is keith bradley im in alabama, what are my chances of disabilty with dystolic and systolic chronic hart failure with dilated cardiomyopthy and ventricular techycarido also anemia and g i bleed.i am55 years old
Johnathan, I am 58 , CAD, ischemic cardiomyapathy EF of 32. Left Vent. Diastole is 6.2 cm. Icd implant . All from a heart attack 9 years ago. Class 2 A. I have complete medical records and cardiologist will give me whatever I need.I work construction as a plumber. It is a young mans game and I am not able to keep up. I am now completely wiped out an useless after work. What is your opinion on my chances to get ssdi if I quit my job? Thanks
It helps that you are 58, with a clearly diagnosed condition and a long work history. However, your doctors would have to offer opinions about how your cardiac issues impact your capacity to work a simple, entry level sit down job. A diagnosis doesn't mean much with your evidence of functional limitations.
@@ssdattorney thank you for taking the time to respond to me. You're very helpful.

Hello, I'm 55 , i have been seeing my cardiologist with documentation for 17 years . I have 26 stents, a total occlusion of the right artery, and have chronic heart failure. my last stent was 6 months ago and I'm unable to recover after any physical or mental stress induced exertion. I am waiting to hear if they will approve my disability and that alone has been giving chest pain and SOB. what are my chances?
Steve, that sounds like a winning case to me.
