Tamnavulin is the other brand Whyte & MacKay own. IMHO, the Dalmore 12 Sherry Cask Select tastes better and costs $65 here in SoCal vs $320 for the 18..!!! Glendronach 18 - $220, Bunnahabhain 18 - $399. CRAZYYYYY..!!!!!

I haven't seen it, but I think you (or was it another whisky reviewer?) mentioned that Horst once looked into the actual cost of time whisky spent in a barrel, and found that it didn't contribute very much to the overall production cost of a whisky--most of the costs are at the beginning, with just a few extra pounds/dollars/euros each year. Or then there's big costs at the end like alcohol taxes, sales taxes, etc. So the premium in pricing for added age was never really cost-based, but has been pushed much more so in the last 2-3 years. Functionalist economists may argue it's a cost that "the market" will bear, but that's what is said re. every bubble from tulips onward, i.e. capitalism is cyclical, and the longer-term costs of the downs are typically glossed/ignored/not fully counted. In doing so such ideologues are fetishising/mystifying "the market", which is composed of actual people. Age (in luxury products) is probably an ideal thing to "premiumise" because it lends itself so readily to such fetishisation/mystification. The "taste" of (added) age is comparatively elusive/a mystique, so in one sense can become whatever producers decide to ask, at least temporarily (temporally?). The cost of 18s is beyond me, but then compare how much it jumps again for just three more years to 21. Age (in several senses) is laughable (in several...). Good thing we try to retain out senses of humour as we age.
Bought it for 70€ here in Germany 5 years ago. Compared to Dalmore 12 and 15 I liked the 18 more... Still I have the same issue like you: for me at least all standard Dalmores have this artificial note that I can't stand. But lucky for me the insane current price for Dalmore 18 does not bother me at all, as I will not buying it again, even if it was 70€ again...
The best 18 year old whiskey is Sazerac 18 - I know it isn’t a scotch. Next is Springbank 18 but that is impossible to find anywhere. I hear Old Pulteny 18 is very good. Glenmorangie 18 can be nice if you like the honey taste - it is a bit like Balvenie Doublewood.
Yep, Dalmore prices are even beyond ridiculous these days. As for recommendable 18 yo malt I'd say Speyburn. In Bulgaria I can buy a bottle for roughly 79 euros. Loch Lomond 18 and Glen Moray 18 can be had for about 10 euros less, but I'd take Speyburn first. It may not be the best 18 yo on the market, but considering that almost everything with 18 on the label costs way more than 100 euros already, I'd say Speyburn is a decent value. Cheers!
Speyburn 18 is the best value for money. Quality wise, it can easily keep up with the Macallan 18 double oak for less than a third of the retail price!

Overpriced is an understatement for Dalmore. I've had the Dalmore 12 when it was $40 and it was ok. I bought the Dalmore 18 for about $100 several years ago and I agree with your opinion "C-". Where I live in CA. the 18 is between $250-$300, what a joke. All Dalmore products start in an Ex-bourbon cask and finished in some other cask. I'm sure Dalmore makes a very good bottle, but I'm not shelling out the money for the 25 or 30 yr. I did buy a Dalmore 10 yr cask strength Independent bottle by "Hart Brothers" first fill, non-chilled at 56.1 for $70. When I open it, I hope to taste something good, who knows. I personally don't recommend any annual releases by Dalmore. I don't know how they stay in business. Great review.
