Scotch review, Dalmore 18, Whisky,
Whisky in the 6 #87 features the Dalmore 18 Year Old. This is a Highland Scotch that has become quite popular due to movies like Kingsman, which displays one of Dalmore's oldest and most prestigious whiskies ever made (1962 Dalmore). Watch the review to find out if the name is worth the hype.
Great review Rob. Bring on the Dalmore hater's ! "It's chill filtered! it has colorant added! It's 40%!" I myself like the Dalmore's, but I like sherry based whiskies. I say taste it. it is good? then who cares about the other things. Would I prefer they don't add color? yes. Would I prefer they don't chill filter? I don't know because i've never had a side by side comparison of the exact same whisky to see what chill filtering does. would I prefer it higher than 40%? yes. Most of the higher aged whiskies i've had have all been 40-43% If you like, its your palate!
Couldn't agree more. Ultimately how it smells and tastes is most important. It's not like they are adding sugars or other substances. It's food colouring. I enjoy non-chill filtered and no added colour, but much like I won't turn away from a good NAS, I won't turn away from a good whisky that is chill-filtered or has added a tint. Looking forward to February guys ;) Cheers.
I agree. Personally, though, I rate whiskies lower when they got less than 42% just because more alcohol WILL do them good. And if it makes them too strong you can always add water. There's no reason to water them down to 40% except to sell cheaper bottles.
I think it's slightly overpriced but there is nothing wrong with the whisky itself. As you all point out it's pretty easy for anyone to enjoy it.
Richard Paterson for you though. Just look at Jura, good stuff just nothing extremely special and up there on the prices unfortunately.
It's not cheap for sure. I enjoyed it though.
Fast forward to 2024 and it has almost tripled in price, absurd.
If this tastes similar to the King Alexander III, I'd give it a try for sure. The King is superb (I've finished 2 bottles) and will buy another one day
Rich Garcia I’d be curious to know if you think the King Alexander is worth the extra money after tasting the 18.
King alexander is my fav. I buyed 1 bottle. I dont try the 18 yet but soon..
#2nd Thumbs up and not sure If I'm the first poster any more since I watched twice, but good review. The Dalmore 18 got higher around here. A couple months ago it was $159 now its $189. Great review ma man shared on twitter also.
Thanks brother. You were the first comment. Confirmed. 190 USD is about 245 Canadian. Good deal for me at 200. Worth every penny in my opinion. Thanks for helping out with the shares. Cheers buddy, Merry Christmas.
Whisky In The 6 Merry Christmas ma man
Dalmore tastes like its been watered down. I imagine it would taste great natural, but its sad that marketing doesnt work that way.
Couldn’t agree more. Wish they put out whisky at a higher abv.
why no king Alexander review?
The Cigar Malt is one of my all time favourites. Both sure are temping at the new pricing.
Better than the 18?
That depends on the person. I like it better. The Cigar Malt has a good amount of older whisky, but I have not had the 18yo in quite a few years.
Really nice to hear Dalmore so positive reviewed! I really like their presentation but I am a bit disappointed with my 15y. Perhaps I need to up my game to the 18y :)
The 3 percent and extra 3 years must make a great difference.
Whisky In The 6 They must. The 15 lacks complexity. Oak and sherry and not a lot else, but still decent.
SOWLEG Same here Dalmore 15 years 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Not much diff between the 12 and 15. The 12 for the price is the buy. That said, both the Cigar Malt and the 18 are worth the splurge. I am sure the King Alexander is too, but have yet to try.
Partially because of the hype I've stayed away. The 15 is not terribly priced here but I just don't know. I do like Whyte and Mackay's Fettercairn, though, so maybe I should give it a try. I tried Alexander at a shop - it was nice. I guess that's their 'Signet' pricey NAS.
An hour before Christmas here!
Merry Christmas Rob
Merry Christmas Mark. Hope you have a wonderful one. I also stayed away from the 15 year old simply because it was only 40%. The 18 is delicious though.
lol! wait one year for every year in the cask. I love it. On a real note... In Florida in 2021 this bottle goes for 270 USD :0
Nabbed that Macallan through ecommerce. Still waiting for it though to arrive. Looking forward to your review of it. It sounds interesting but there are very few reviews so far to go on.
How is this compared to Glendronach 18 Allardice? Which one is better? Any similarities? Thanks!
Carlos Gustavo very different. This is more delicate, softer as a whole. Very good stuff but I like the Glendronach better.
I was going to buy the 12 for $100 as the 18 is $200. But after watching this, you might have convinced me to spend the extra $100. It's really that much better than the 12? Really?
I actually don't like the 12 much. There are plenty of better 12 year old scotch. I really enjoyed the 18. Now I wish you could try a sample before spending the 200. If you have tried the 12 and like it I'm convinced you'll love the 18.
I love this dram too. Great review.
Joey Dyck it’s solid stuff.
Have you ever thought about doing a review of the King Alexander III ? I think thats my next purchase. Ive asked everyone for BCLC Liquor store gift cards for christmas ! Also where did you find your Glendronach ? I can't find it in BC
Joey Dyck found the Glendronachs from your neighbouring province Alberta. I don’t think I’ll do King Alexander. Tasted it once and it’s a bit too similar to the 18.
i always get a liquorice note from the dalmore ymmv i really like the gran reserva but you can't get it anymore
You are right. I get liquorice as well. Forgot to mention. Thanks for pointing that out buddy. Cheers.
Rob so i have tried the dalmore 18 which is a wonderfull soft, oily smooth sweet and in the finish a little spicy and oaky amazing whiskey.
I have tried the 15....i can tell nothing is there only spiecy and storng not smooth at all nkt tasty either. 15 isnt even close to the 18...disappointing
מטוס מטוסמטוס טוב I love that stuff for sure. Cheers.
Apart from going downtown T.O. (im too lazy lol) this is sold out EVERYWHERE. Like, the whole friggin province AND it went up by 23 bucks :( Still wanna buy it though haha
Conor Hildebrandt it's good stuff man. I tried the King Alexander and it's far too similar to pay the extra. Go with the 18.
Yah eh? Good to know.
Whisky In The 6 King Alexander Or 18?
i remember Dalmore as having a bit of a "beefy" hit on the nose, similar to Glenrothes + Mortlach . . . but i am not a big fan . . .
hmm interesting. I didn't notice a savoury element to it.
Merry Christmas Rob! Thanks for helping me spend a lot more than I planned in 2016.
Lol! Hopefully I didn't make you waste any. Cheers brother. Merry Christmas!
I totally agree. Bought 1 bottle Dalmore 18 this summer, and it has grown on me to be one of my favourites. It's out of stock in Norway. Just one shop, luckily near me, had 4 bottles left. Had to buy 2 bottles yesterday (maybe I should have bought all 4), but ist NOK1390 (£121) over here, so.
I feel like these will go up in price soon. Smart purchase.
Reely you think it's so good? When you read the label im not so impressed. 40abv ( then i normally stay away i dont want to support this hussel) and not only that they have done evrething you should not do. Low abv, collord and chill filterd. I whas thinking abote ordering it to ( in norway) insted i bougth the Hilendpark Full volume who is 17 years and some months. maybe i try this when they change somfing like stop adding collor. If we whant no chill filterd and no collor 40abv it's important to not buy those so the distillery need to change. ( my appinion)
I won't ever try this. With the grotesque amount of E150 they use in their whiskies it is really off-putting. For me this is just a tacky "fake" product. I am happy for you that it is tasty and good priced in your area. For me, there's so many other excellent whiskies out there and too little time.
I respect that. I understand where you're coming from for sure. Cheers.
So I guess you also do not drink Lagavulin 16, Highland Park, Oban, Talisker, Laphroaig..??
The US price for Dalmore 18 has risen to around $220. For my money and taste I’ll stick with Highland Park 18. I just hope Highland Park 18 doesn’t skyrocket as well
+kleinster99 I don’t blame you. They are near equal in price here.
I managed to get The Dalmore 18 last night for $150 Canadian. At that price, I had to do it.
guy8000 solid price.
hmmm... it's around 90€ where I live. But too be fair Dalmore isn't my most fav. distillery (not my least fav. either) and I can't stand Richard P.
Do you get bottles from independent distillers in Canada?
Raymaster7482 in Ontario we are forced to purchase all liquor through a government owned company called the LCBO. We pay very high prices, 30-100% higher than global average.
+Whisky In The 6 damn that sucks.... and if you order online?
We are unable to buy whisky online. we can only accept alcohol as a gift.
How does the 18 compare with the King Alex iii?
James Bolger honestly I find they are far to similar to justify such a price difference.
Whisky in the 6 i have to ask for get the picture.. many people dont like dalmore and giving negative feedback. You said you liked very much dalmore 18 ("taste is king") as u s said. How is it, compare to the Glenfidich 18?
I like it much more than the Glenfiddich 18
Whisky In The 6 much more? it sounds high quality dalmore 18 as u describe it. Thank you for asnwering ill give it a try
I like the Dalmore 18 a lot better.
Whisky In The 6 thabks ill try it soon
This whiskey is over rated and over priced, with E150 colourant added and being chill filtered. You got ripped off.
I enjoy it. It’s a tasty whisky. Have you tried it?
It's price point is way too high for what you receive. Much better whiskeys for comparable price.
Rain Coast have you tasted this whisky though?
So you haven't tasted it, and your only complaint are 2 things that have ZERO effect on the flavor. Your dogmatic snobbery is making you miss out, big time.
The Stormlight Archive,like :)
crsxxx two of my favourite books.
I agree this was a wonderful whisky. Sadly its been over a year since my last bottle and tend to go for the 15 most of the time because of the price difference between them.
The only reason I avoid the 15 is because it's bottled at 40%
Whisky In The 6 That's not a deal breaker for me, what matters when I'm buying a whisky is if it's good or not.
I agree with you. Taste is King.
The most reddish single malt in Scotland. Good review Rod.
If only it were naturally coloured that way.
Hmmmm it will cost more
expensive then .... hahahaa
Macallan is bloody overpriced lol.
it really is.
A little slip there on the chair and good to know to let your scotch breath for 18 years. LOL...Looks like maybe you were enjoying some good scotch before the review..:>) Hey its the holidays, right. So the Dalmore 18 was that good. Sounds like you may like it better than the Glendronach 15 & 18, that is pretty strong. I received my Dalmore 18, OP 21 and Glenfiddich Project XX this week. Unfortunately I came down with a bit of a cold, so I have to wait until that passes before cracking the bottles open. You got me real interested in that Dalmore 18. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for all of your great reviews. Hope you can continue through 2017. I know its expensive, especially for you. Anyways Merry Xmas Rob.
Hahahaha, well unfortunately I can only blame the slip of the hand and words on my clumsy/inarticulate nature. I really enjoyed the Dalmore 18. Whether it was better than the Glendronachs, we will have to wait until next week to find out : ) Cheers Keith, Merry Christmas.
W6, its all good. Until next year.
You're stuck with me for one video before the new year.
W6, I revisited the Dalmore 18 last night since my cold was pretty much over. Great sweet nose, taste was smooth and interesting. Much better than the 12 yr. The first time I tried it, I got a little heat, not alcohol, hard to explain. Being only 43 abv, I was surprised especially being Dalmore, but I did not get it last night??? I would give it a "B+/A-"... Who knows, over time it might end up being an "A" for me...
Ya, I think natural colour and a touch of smoke would make this the perfect dram. Too bad.
Good! tks from Brazil 🇧🇷
Leandro Rodrigues da Silva cheers buddy.
Now do the 25!
I wish. Too expensive.
I've got a problem with this as I have all Dalmore product. They are marketed like the Haig Club and that sucks. Virtually all of their range, including this one, are chill filtered, coloured and bottled at rubbish strength. Anything over 20 years is ridiculously priced. I appreciate people like Dalmore but there's so much better for the money in my opinion.
It surprised me to be honest. I didn't think I'd like it. Purchased it because it was at par with the global average cost. Cheers buddy, always respect your opinion.
I sampled the 21 year and was impressed but the price was crazy.
What's your stance on Highland Park then?
Ah Yes, A very good question. Highland Park have sold out in my opinion. Same criticism as Dalmore. I know people love Highland Park but I only buy independent bottlings now. These companies market their overpriced product (that's what it is - product) to gullible consumers (people like us) and the cash rolls in. With all the money Highland Park has made in the last few years do you think they make better whisky? I don't.
I know you like your sherried whiskies Rob so I'm attaching a link that I think you will find very interesting.
www.sherrynotes.com/2016/background/sherry-and-oak/
Like Ruben that writes this sherry site (He also has a very fine whisky site) I love sherry and whisky. My wife is Spanish and we visit the bodegas in the sherry triangle in Cadiz as well as Montilla. I often find that the whisky industry is deliberately vague about the relation between sherry barrels and whisky, the barrels that are sold to the whisky industry and the age of those barrels.
Let me know what you think. All the best. Merry Christmas
Awesome article Welsh, thank you. I do plan to review a HP very shortly. Perhaps I'll stick with the Dark Orgins as it is non-chill filtered. Merry Christmas.
Dalmore intrigued me after seeing Kingsman but when I read about it kinda lets me down. Seems like it isn't as good as it was portrayed but that shouldn't be surprised. They obviously paid to be in the movie.
You won't be disappointed if you get ahold of the 18. It is high quality stuff.
Yes! It's so good you will Shxt!
Whisky In The 6 better than the Glengoyne 12?
Big price difference, but yes. The Dalmore 18 is impressive. The Glengoyne 12 is crazy good bang for your buck.
Lol
I can't agree with u more, the 12 fell very short for me too just to scared to spend the $ for the 18...
I think it's worth the pennies but $200 isn't chump change so there are no promises here. Give it a shot a a bar but be sure to take your time with it.
Dave, I totally agree. The 12 yr was a hit and miss for me. Just to soft and didn't want to take a chance on the 15 yr. Watched some reviews and opted for the 18. Received this week from MOM, but came down with a cold so I can't taste it just yet.
Keith Petersen
Geez , I guess u have to wait smh let me know whatcha think when u do they it
try
Dave, I will let you know what I think.
