One fun thing about the quiet plane wreckage shots in the end credits is that you can also see Jack's tent in the background. The medical tent he had before he moved to the caves, with the blue tarp flailing in the wind. Once again, showing that the characters were alive after the crash.

So in the 1st season it shows the plane breaking apart way up high. Jack conjectures they were at 37000 feet. I will go with your supposition that they are alive at this point. I looked up how high up you could go before you couldn't breath due to lack of oxygen. Turns out that about 26000 feet is the extreme limit of height a person could go before starting to experience lack of oxygen. So for about 11000 feet ( 2 miles), there is plenty of time to reach terminal velocity. It would take 31 seconds to get back under that 26000 feet range. It might be impossible to hold your breath at terminal velocity ( I don't know, I'm speculating here) . Plus you are likely rotating as you fall. I suspect people falling that 11000 feet are in panic mode and not thinking about trying to hold their breath for 30 seconds. Anyway,, the front half of the plane is going the speed it was when it broke apart. I don't know how fast or heavy the front half would be going. But I can't imagine that slamming into the ground at any speed from that height ( 37000 feet is about 7 miles maybe a bit more) would be survivable. Lets go to the tail section. and the show specifically about them. the opening scene shows many small projectiles slamming into the water ( the people in the tail section). All of them are in free fall and yes ii googled it and it turns out that terminal velocity is about 125.5 mph. I can't see how hitting anything even water at 125.5 mph is survivable. I suppose it would be akin to slamming into a 10 foot thick iron wall. Anyway somehow they all survived and lived. I'm not even going to go into how the oceanic 6 left the island or how Ben, Charles and Eloise and others were allowed to leave when Jacob wouldn't let them. If the writers are saying that they were alive the whole time then they are piss poor writers and on the level of George Lucas and therefore the entire series was trash writing and acting.

@@darrelmarchick6854 The show has a smoke monster and magic light beneath The Island's landmass, where terminal cancer is cured and a paralysed man can walk again without needing surgery. There is time travel and teleportation and characters with psychic powers. It's a science fiction show in which fantastical entities exist and impossible things happen. All of this requires a degree of the suspension of disbelief. Just like in 'Star Trek' you have to accept that spaceships travelling faster than light is possible. Getting hung up on the notion that no one could survive that plane crash is being needlessly pedantic, although I suspect it is more of a way for you to try and justify your own reading that they were dead the whole time. That said, we do know that there have been many survivors of plane crashes in real life, so that is probably the least impossible event on the show and not completely out of the realms of possibility. We know that the plane didn't crash in a normal way. It was being *pulled* towards the island by the electromagnetic energy after Desmond failed to push the button, which means the plane didn't simply drop out of the sky. Its descent would have been affected and steadied by the electromagnetic pull. We see that the tail section lands in a very unusual (and survivable) way.
Speaking more broadly on this point of how people survived, the show establishes that certain characters cannot die until they have fulfilled their respective destinies. We see this over and over again. The Island protects them from death until they have achieved what they needed to achieve. The plane crash is no different from the car accident that Michael gets into off-island. It is something that should have killed him, but The Island isn't done with him, so he survives. All of the Oceanic passengers go back in time later on in the series; they are weaved into the fabric of The Island's history, so they cannot die until they have fulfilled their destinies in the past. Like John Locke, Daniel Faraday and Juliet Burke. Whatever happened, happened. And until those events "happen", they won't die. Not from a plane crash, nor a bullet to the abdomen, nor falling down a deep hole in the ground. This is the unbreakable rule of reality within the mythology.
What I really dislike (and contest) about what you are saying is that if your theory is incorrect (that they were dead the whole time) then the show must be trash and the writing is "piss poor", simply because your own theory has not been validated. If you're wrong then the show must suck. This is such a bad faith way to view any fictional story. It has been exhaustively explained that the characters *were not* dead the whole time, both within the show, by the creators, and on this channel and elsewhere. The first time you watched LOST, you would have gone through six seasons of fantastical events. Long before you came to the conclusion that they were all dead. And presumably you didn't write any of those fantastical events off before you came to that final conclusion at the end. It's only now that your reading of the ending is being called into question that you try to throw the whole show under the bus. This is a very disingenuous position to take.

Thank you for this great video. It does get annoying having to correct people who completely misinterpret the ending. One thing I would like to add that's a great little detail the writers included is, viewers should pay very close attention to Rose and Bernard in the flash sideways. Upon rewatching, it's VERY clear they both know exactly where they are, and they're trying to guide Jack to what he needs to go. And it makes total sense. Rose and Bernard didn't have any unresolved issues before they died (whenever that happened), so they would have appeared in the flash sideways with likely full knowledge of what they were doing there. It's a wonderful way to see things.

Well done! I'll definitely be sharing. When people ask me about this, I usually remind them of the final scene in the film "Titanic."
Spoilers: Rose is an old woman who dies in her bed. We then see a young Rose walking up the grand staircase to meet Jack, with the other passengers surrounding them. Young Rose looks the way others remembered her, despite living to a much older age. She is rejoining the others in the "afterlife."
In the "flashsideways" when Kate tells Jack, "I've missed you so much," she doesn't look like her older self. She is her younger self, the version Jack new, despite the hinted-to fact that she went on to live many more years without him.
This is just my "elevator pitch" to quickly explain it to someone and get their gears to start spinning lol. You've provided all the information necessary and I'll definitely share this the next time someone is confused haha. Bravo!

For those who believe they were dead the whole time, how do you explain Desmond, Penny, and Juliet being in the church in the end? If they were dead from the beginning (flight 815 crash), it means Desmond, Penny, Juliet and Ben never existed. So how are they there? 😊
And how can the wreckage at the end made people confused? Did they pay any attention to what Christian said to Jack in the church? "Everything that happened to you is real".

I think the later seasons, especially the last season, play a lot better after a few viewings. S6 is kind of jarring because it brings in a bunch of new characters, a new location, & it goes deeper into the mythology. I really didn't care for it on the first viewing, but it's actually my favorite now & the finale is beautiful. The flash sideways parallels have some of the best writing imo.

Thank you for this excellent first video in your new FAQ series! I think you did a beautiful job of disproving and debunking the common misconception many people misunderstood about the show’s ending (whether from misunderstanding what actually happened when they first watched it; or from not really watching the show all the way through thereby missing important plot details or context; or just picking it up from misinformation they found online about the show from others and not watching it themselves). You also did a really good job of debunking this theory using only evidence and context from the show itself; and also without disparaging or insulting anyone who “didn’t get it,” which I thought was a really classy move. And I also loved how you likened the misunderstanding of what some people think happened in the show’s ending and choosing what they want to believe about it regardless of opposing evidence; despite an abundance of evidence to the contrary from both the show itself and the show’s writers; and comparing that to how these days in our modern world people will rampantly and wholeheartedly cling to misinformation about our current reality and believe it completely; and then ignore all the factual sources of information that are available that go against it because they go against what they already want to believe. It really does feel like people are debating objective reality sometimes even when the truth is right there in front of our faces (like climate change; the pandemic, etc.); and it’s felt like that for me for many issues and topics over the years and I’m glad to see others notice that too. Again; excellent work, and I can’t wait for the rest of your brilliant videos! Namaste!

Hello, not sure where i'd ask these questions and i hope i didn't miss their explanation somewhere
    1. The hatch, what happened at end of season 2 - what did Desmond actually do that "fixed everything"? Were there any consequences to it? And what would've happened without his intervention?
    2. Why was Benjamin Linus anywhere near the survivors in S2? Obviously out-of-universe it's because he wasn't supposed to be their leader until the showrunners were impressed by Michael Emmerson, but has there been any in-Universe explanation for it? What was his actual in-universe purpose for being/going there?

Firstly, welcome back to the channel! 😊 I’ve started using my own voice in videos so the latest four will sound different. I am told that it marks an improvement over the text to speech voice I was using, so hopefully you will find the same.
To answer your question: Oh yes! Definitely! I have a list of things that I take issue with from the show. For starters, the outrigger. There is no reason why the writers could not have found a way to close that loop even if they had to change their original plans. My video on the outrigger offers my thoughts on how it could have been resolved. Danielle Rousseau’s death and character arc being cut short still bothers me to this day. Ilana’s missing backstory (and abrupt death) was a mistake imo, there was more they could have done there; give her a flashback episode and a more respectful send off. Walt’s absence from season six all together is a sticking point - why couldn’t he have been brought back on the sub with Desmond? I will eventually make a video detailing my qualms with the plot elements I was left dissatisfied by and offer up my own suggestions on how they could have been fixed. 👍 But yes, there are plenty of issues I have with the show as a result of the writers not knowing how to resolve story elements they had set up. Most of my complaints surround dropped plot threads rather than the things they actually answered in some way or concluded.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108  Рік тому +2

I tend to view the final scenes in the church as being from Jack’s perspective, especially when he walks into the church to meet everyone. But Christian does tell him that this is “the place you all made so you could find each other” which suggests it’s a shared “bardo”. I mean, if the sideways was all just Jack’s bardo then why would he create and experience the deeply personal details of the other characters, for example John Locke and Helen’s relationship, or Sayid’s love for Nadia who is now married to his brother? How do their specific personal issues and hang ups from their real lives feed into Jack’s afterlife? I feel like if we make the sideways all about Jack then it diminishes the afterlife journeys that all of the other characters go on, and all of the personal issues they resolve.
So, I agree only partially in terms of the actual final scenes in the sideways being exclusively from Jack’s POV but I tend to view everything we see in the sideways as being manifested by our Losties as a collective rather than simply revolving around one individual.

It doesn't matter if they were dead the whole time or not - the Island was Purgatory. People eaither reached Salvation or Damnation while on it. No one escaped this fate. It doesn't have to be a "literal" Purgatory - it is definitely a metaphorical Purgatory.

The video was made to help dispel that myth really.

There are several reasons and misconceptions as to why some people came to the conclusion that the characters had been dead the whole time, which is why I made this video. I don’t hold it against anyone, just seeking to offer them a clear and evidence-based explanation as to why they misunderstood things.
As for the 815 plane wreckage, it is explained in the show that Charles Widmore setup that wreckage at the bottom of the Sundra Trench in order to stop the search for Oceanic 815. He didn’t want anyone finding the island. And he had decades to plan this since he had known since 1977 that Oceanic 815 would crash on the island. You might just be bringing that up as an example of why you were originally confused by the story and not as an actual question to be answered, I just wasn’t sure if you wanted me to respond to it.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108

If you recall, Widmore blasts Desmond with a high level of electromagnetic energy to test his resistance. The exposure briefly dislodges Desmond's consciousness from linear time. During this blip, he experiences a small glimpse of the sideways. But he doesn't understand that it's the afterlife yet and he won't experience it fully until his death. All he knows about the sideways reality is that the plane hasn't crashed and things are different for everyone.
It is worth noting what Jack says to him in response, and quite confidently. This line is clearly Jack speaking on behalf of the show too: "There are no shortcuts. No do-overs. What happened, happened. Trust me, I know. *All* of this matters."

Your Lost Explained videos sound like you trying to write a unifying theory on lost. I would not call any of your videos FAQs (if that is some holding space for "facts").. This one especially where in you seem to have started out claiming they weren't dead the whole time and then going off in a completely different direction and talking about how they were dead on the island, and coming back to everything that happened was real while going on to crap on anyone who says they were by saying they are wrong and don't understand the premiseof the show. Its like you lost focus and went off on a few tangents here rather than sticking to a direction and providing your evidence that way.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108  Рік тому +2

First of all, I do not "crap on" anyone who says they were dead the whole time. I go out of my way to explain why that misconception has been perpetuated and to quote the video: *"People who believe they were dead the whole time are not bad people nor are they deserving of ridicule."* Your comment is frustrating to read because either you didn't watch the video fully or you are wilfully trying to mischaracterise my arguments. Either way, I really don't appreciate the distortions, and it's not a good faith way to start a conversation on here.
Second of all, the video stays on topic and doesn't lose focus at all. The whole substance of the video is answering that main FAQ (which stands for Frequently Asked Questions) and discussing the reasons why this misconception is out there, and how it came to be. And I never claimed they were dead on The Island. Again, that's another misrepresentation of what I said. The Island technically doesn't exist anymore in the Sideways; it's sunk at the bottom of the ocean. The only time the characters are all dead in LOST is within the Flash Sideways, which is taking place after everyone from the real world (where The Island still exists) has died.
This is why I made this video BTW. Because even now people get confused by this, even those who think they understand it. This "they were dead the whole time" theory is demonstrably incorrect, both by using the facts established within the show and by what the creators have definitively stated outside of the show. The video covers all of this ground in much detail, so I'm not going to rehash it all again in the comments.
Now, I can see that you're clearly someone who has carried this belief for a long time about the show. And you have taken umbrage at this video because it contradicts your preconceived understanding of it all. But that's why I made the video: to correct the record for people with that same belief, and to do so without making judgements on them. I'm not calling anyone names or being hostile just because of a long held misunderstanding. I'm just laying out the established facts for them and discussing what makes that theory objectively wrong. But when it comes to subjective enjoyment? If you want to continue treating the show as if they had been dead the whole time because you enjoy the narrative more that way then that is absolutely your prerogative to do so. You can watch and enjoy the show however you want. But what you can't do is challenge other fans in this arrogant way as if we are the ones who misunderstood the show and are somehow in the wrong for not agreeing with a theory that has been widely debunked within the story and outside of the story.
A lot of what goes into these videos aren't just theories. Much of the information I present has been demonstrably proven on the show itself and I back-up what I say using scenes and dialogue and interviews. Most of what I am doing is simply unpacking what was presented in the story or connecting dots that were both intentionally and unintentionally left in the narrative. Damon and Carlton have gone on record as saying that they want the show "to speak for itself", and I think a lot of it does. However, six seasons of complicated mythology (and retcons and narrative detours) can be hard for the average viewer to untangle and make sense of. That's where I come in. It's about explaining both the big and small things. Anyway, the point of this channel is to take canon information from the show, occasional confirmations from the creators, and extrapolate when necessary on the more ambiguous elements that were intentionally left open.
If you wish to discuss these aspects, or even try to make a case for your own counter theories then I'm always happy to engage. I encourage that. But if you are going to come at this by totally misrepresenting what I said (which you have), or by being obstinate in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, then that is not a good faith discussion. I want every LOST fan to have the chance to be part of the channel and community on here and to chat openly about the show, but that's not a free pass to be disrespectful simply because you haven't had your own theories validated.

Not sure if you've watched the full video, but I use evidence from within the show and outside of the show to definitively prove that they were not dead the whole time. The creators have also gone on record as stating that the characters were not dead since the plane crash and that this is a pervasive misconception about the ending (I include interviews with them here). This video will unfurl all of that evidence for you. Really recommend you watch the full thing.

I didn’t have recording equipment back when these were made so had to use a text-to-speech voice. But I did remake everything using my real voice (which I’ve been using for two years now). You can find updated, revoiced versions of these old videos split into a six part bumper series featuring more detail and TLC here:

Anyone got a timestamp for when he actually answers the question? Its a yes or no question dude. It doesnt take 30 minutes. Answer the question, and THEN if you want to say more, that's fine. But just answer the got dam question.

It gets answered at 1:55. Hardly an epic length of time to wait.

No, please watch the video as it explains in detail why that is a fundamental misunderstanding.
