The Rise And Fall Of The MCU

  • The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had plenty of highs and now a good amount of recent lows. Iron Man set a quality standard early on but now green screen films like Thor: Love & Thunder and Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania are taking things in a terrible new direction. The inclusion of a handful of Disney+ shows isn't helping things either. She-hulk, Loki, Wandavasion, Ms. Marvel and more just confuse things and most of them lack the same quality we've come to expect. Thankfully there is still hope on the horizon with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 but outside of that, I'm very worried for the MCU in phase 5 and beyond.

    When Endgame came out, I already know the mcu has hit its obvious peak. I'm going to be sticking along for however long this franchise goes, cause at the end of the day I still have a lot of fun with these projects. Basically got into the groove of watching new entry, enjoying it, watch the internet rip it to shreds, and move on. Quantumania was the best example of that. Am I gonna miss the popularity and praise it once had during the Infinity Saga? Yea. But nothing lasts forever, and I kinda accepted that

    Your take on the MCU is spot on. I wonder how much Disney's desire to push people to Disney plus with their IPs affected the MCU. Seems like it started to go downhill when they were trying to get people to sign up with every show and movie.

  • @user-kj7vf
    @user-kj7vf Рік тому +14

    The problem with the MCU is that it reached a plateau with phase 3 then they started throwing more stuff in a short period of time. They should have slowed it down and built it up slowly like they did with the infinity saga. All these Disney+ shows and movies just add up to more burn out. Less is more.

    I agree, generally, with everything you said. To me it really feels like Marvel doesn’t understand what got them to the heights of popularity and success. It was character writing. The characters were given time and space to grow on us. They seem to think the hero’s powers are what defines them now. Now they introduce characters left and right without spending any time with them. Remember Shang Chi? Where’d he go? Introduced him but he disappeared for the rest of the entire phase. Also, I really wish they’d go back to the villains and the stakes being appropriate to the hero. Everything is save the world or, even worse, save the friggin’ multiverse. Again. Calm down Marvel! Best example is the newest film. Ant-Man vs. Kang the Conqueror? Seriously? It feels like there is no real thought put in to this world any more. Writers are just allowed to do whatever. Also, The Scarlet Witch has been unforgivably wasted. She should have been the big bad, not Kang, for this phase. They could have, over a phase, showed her go from hero to villain as she slowly loses her mind from grief and loss. Then the Avengers would have to deal with an incredible threat that is also personal because she comes from within their own ranks. Begging the question of what happens when someone with tremendous powers becomes a threat. How do the Avengers deal with this? Would have been, I think, far more compelling.

    • @codybishop7526
      @codybishop7526 Рік тому +4

    Can't agree with your take on No Way Home. The entire theme of Spiderman is With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility. Peter Parker is a teenager who has incredible powers but is young and naïve. He tries to solve the problem with his friend's college rejections and ends up screwing things up in the Multiverse. He spends the rest of the movie trying to fix this mistake. Along the way, we get a lot more characterization of the various Spiderman villains and Peter is tempted to solve the problem of the villains by simply sending them back to their universe which would immediately cause their deaths. It is Aunt May who reminds them that he must strive to be better than that and it is she who insists that we see the good in each of the villains. In the end, Peter is sorely tempted to act out and destroy the Green Goblin but is stopped by his multiverse counterparts. It's a fascinating look at a very flawed superhero struggling with the great power he has.

    • @AdamDoesMovies
      @AdamDoesMovies  Рік тому +2

      Right, except it's actually Dr. Strange who causes the issues. The fact that Strange was on board with this was the silly part. The dude hasn't grown as a character at all. In fact, he has regressed since Endgame.

      @@AdamDoesMovies All superhero movies have a bit of silly in them. Dr. Strange agrees to help Peter mostly out of kindness. Peter is still just a kid and he just lost his mentor after all. That actually shows some growth for Strange. OTOH, there's also more than a bit of arrogance going on here, which is still Dr. Strange's major flaw. He's always been a surgeon with a God complex. In any case, Strange's involvement is small. The movie is about how Peter handles his own power and learns from the other Peters about the dangers of power and revenge.

  • @jvenom174

    I feel ya. Everybody has their time in the sun, but it never lasts forever. The MCU had it's run, and now it's gone completely corporate. Maybe someday they could right the ship, but Feige and company probably won't make that choice until it's too late. Honestly, the superhero genre dying for a while would be nice. Probably won't happen... but it'd be nice.

    I'm so happy to see someone who isn't a fan of Endgame like everyone else is supposedly. I still have no idea how Endgame is rated higher than Infinity War, when it significantly lowered the stakes, worsened the villain's characterization, and had such a shoehorned way to end a bunch of storylines.
    Edit: YES! I ALSO FEEL HEARD OF FOR NOT LIKING SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME AS WELL! I always felt like people only liked it for having the 3 main Spider-man there, but that's just sloppy fan-service. Not to mention the way that the plot went to get them to meet together is so sloppy as well.

      @@paulieprinceton4550I remember quite a lot of people did not like End Game, primarily how they treated time travel as so tongue an cheek. The plot was too bloated as well. That being said I'll take Endgame over anything the Snyder verse had to offer.

    So while I kind of agree with you that the show in and of itself is harmless, I overall have to disagree on the grounds that they wasted one of the best characters in the comics and committed the most thorough character assassination I've ever seen in film.

      @@AdamDoesMovies Most of them are not objective, laughing at idea of female hero or diversity in general (and still, those topics we need in movies). Political moves or message were always in any artistic media, that is what people were doing ALWAYS. I generally I agree we don't have a good representation of feminism, power of being a woman etc but laughing and denied we don't need it is childish.

    I. AGREE. YES. I am so tired of the new Phase 4/5 bull**** we have been getting. it's all SOULLESS. Its lifeless shlock. Conveyor belt, as you stated, was quite apt. Marvel needs to fire the writers for the past 10 projects and either hire new, better writers, or bring back some of the best of the best from the first three phases. They need to SLOW DOWN their pace of releases, and they need to add some real stakes back in. It has become an absolute shell of what it was pre-endgame. For a while, i was worried we were in for a bumpy ride until they found their stride again. I will be honest... im now worried we have lost MCU greatness forever. Ive been skipping 60% of the new releases which is something i NEVER would have done before. Its very tragic. I pray the MCU can find its way again, but for now, its an utter fucking let down and i hope they continue to bomb at the box office. Because the shit they have been serving... deserves. to. fail. Woof. Sorry for the rant, cheers Adam

      My guy YES. I think I saw every phase 1, 2 AND 3 MCU release in theaters. I have not seen one phase 4 or 5 movie in theaters. I saw Dr. Strange 2 and Spiderman NWH on Disney Plus. But basically haven't paid a dime for any of those movies because they got rid of all the good heros

    I've said it before and I'll say it again: the main problem is Disney got greedy and didn't have the guts to kill off more characters in Endgame. Endgame was the perfect opportunity to close several character arcs and thereby provide a "soft reset" of the timeline for the next phase of the MCU, and simplifying things going forward. But instead they kept almost everyone alive and proceeded to drag every surviving character into a multiverse of stupidity where they are shells of their former self.

    I believe that instead of releasing the Captain Marvel movie during the infinity saga, they should have released Black Widow's own movie.
    And if they wanted someone who could destroy Thanos' space ship and kept him busy, they could have left it to the Hulk.
    Regarding finding Iron man, they could have left it to Thor, instead of giving Thor the role of an Softpotato.
    Heck they could have had a story piece where Thor gets help to find Iron man with the help of a certain old man in a wheelchair. A person whose all students have gone missing after infinity war. This wheelchair man could help Avenger to find Thanos.

    Adam, YOU NAILED IT and expressed exactly what I have noticed. There was a build up then a massive cookie cutter decline after End Game. Only disagreement is with the Loki series was IMHO outstanding and I wish it kept going with an amazing art direction and plot... couldn't get enough of it. Otherwise, yeah, it's now hit or miss with MCU and there have been more misses as of late. THANK YOU for this review.

    I made it through, and you summarized exactly how I feel. Here’s my take, marvel studios said the hell with us day 1 fans and is making content for younger audiences to still enjoy. My 10 year old daughter loves going to see all the new marvel films and never has a qualm about them. I play along, “oh yea that was cool it’s exciting can’t wait for the next one.” But deep down I’m dreading them. Guardians 3 is the only film on the future timeline that I can look forward to. After that… not sure how I’m going to convince myself to spend the theatre ticket or spend the 9 hours on Disney plus to watch these shows. Never saw ms marvel or she hulk. Can’t do that to myself.

    It’s literally just the writing that’s gone off track, which makes editing harder to deal with.I mean, that first episode of Loki was brilliant, absolutely great writing! I just rewatched it since it first released and I was impressed with how they connected everything, and it got me more excited for more possible gems like loki(yeah Loki had a few meh episodes), but overall, like Wanda vision, it had its own unique indemnity with charm and suspense that was fresh(mostly).

    Personally I think marvel should spend the next 10 years giving every skin color their own film. We don’t need to be entertained come on, what’s important is that skin colors are represented in their own films. Because, apparently diversity is not strength, segregated movies are.

    My favorite MCU movie is Captain America Civil War. One of my least favorite MCU movies was Thor Ragnorak. Marvel turned Thor into an Asgardian Deadpool. Now every superhero has to be a comedian. And yes, Ragnorak led to Love and Thunder. The only Marvel movies worth watching these days are the three Tom Holland Spider-Man films.

    -I've grown softer on Iron Man 3. That villain twist still takes a significant amount out of it for me, but there is still a good deal to give credit for.
    -Comics have found a way to play with the multiverse and still have stakes. But its clear that from a movie and TV side, they are still figuring it out and some projects suffer because of it.
    -It is a weird decision to have Captain Marvel go the direction it did. Maybe they got the confidence to do it after Wonder Woman over at DC got a lot of praise and didn't think things all the way through. But your right, CM needed a different approach.
    -I enjoyed Far From Home. Admittedly, the lowest of the Sony/MCU movies so far but I had fun.
    -WandaVision had a lot of good momentum. But the finale was sloppy in a lot of aspects.
    -Loki isn't amazing, but I feel like it deserves a bit more credit.
    -Eternals fails as part of a cinematic universe. Even as a standalone, it isn't good. It feels like its more profound and provocative than it actually is.
    -I feel like your being too harsh on No Way Home. There is some good character work, and yes, some silly decisions made but when looking at the motivations, it isn't as bad as some may initially think. And I will give credit that this is a comic book movie that found a way to properly utilize the multiverse concept.
    -Love & Thunder is trash, total agreement.
    -Funny enough, I heard that as Sam Raimi was making Doctor Strange 2, Feige kept encouraging him to make it more like a Raimi film. At first glance thats encouraging in regards to having a director make a franchise film more unique. But I think thats where the disconnect your talking about comes from.
    -Werewolf by Night was great for me as a Horror fan, including the classic Universal Monster movies.
    -Its funny...Erik Kripke, the show runner for The Boys, talked a bit about the nature of streaming original shows. A lot of these people talk about them as 8 or 10 hour movies. He said thats the wrong approach, you still have to structure them as TV shows. I can see a lot of original streaming shows that need that structure, including the MCU shows that I have seen.
    Overall, the decline of the MCU touches on a lot of major problems that Hollywood needs to deal with sooner rather than later. Worst case scenario, the blockbuster scene as we know it will crumble under itself and have long lasting effects across the industry, maybe even affecting the global economy as well.
