I just brought home my first two slings and no that the day will come when I lose this spider and I dread it. This makes me feel better already - thank you for making this.
Happened to me with a Blue Femur. We raised her from a sling too, she was around 8 years old. Went in to feed her one day and she was gone. I was totally gutted and I questioned that I did everything right.
Sorry for your lose. That was a beautiful Tarantula. I think I am jealous of your spider collection. LOL I currently have 2 Tarantulas and I have had 1 for 15 years and the other one I've had for 23 years. They both were fairly old when I got them. I know that they're females and they live a long time, but I also know that they won't live for forever and it will be a sad day when they go. I lost one (Brachypelma Smithi) not too long ago and it was sad to find her gone. Both of the ones I have now are Grammostola rosea. I have had many species of Tarantulas over the years and at one time had 11 different species at one time. I miss those days but unfortunately, there isn't a place here to get them like there used to be.
Accepting that nature will be nature is sometimes hard and its hard to not feel guilty but youre so right you cant beat yourself if youve done your best.
Nothing you can do Dave, you do your best and that's all you can do. We as humans, we are here today and gone tomorrow. We are not promised tomorrow. Sorry for your loss.
Thank you for making this video, over the years I've kept most types of pet, and rescued several wild birds. As you can imagine I've experienced this more than my fair share, and it really can be difficult to remember that it's not always your fault. I still find it hard to deal with, so it's even more important that newer keepers get this message. Thank you again. x
Dave, thanks for this. I had the most gorgeous brachipelma boemii (sp) fireleg, 3 years old. A big, beautiful spider we truly loved. Bought her as a juvenile and watched her get more beautiful with each passing day. Recently, she had flipped over to molt. The process started, but she got stuck. Never made it out of the exoskeleton. It was dreadful watching her slowly die. She went from stunning to shriveled in a day or two. Looks like the abdomen deflated. I recall your video on this species and you recommended some humidity in their enclosure. I fear it may have been too dry. We live in Colorado north of Denver and the lack of ambient humidity is a hallmark of this region, perhaps necessitating overflowing the water dish more often. As new keepers, I do question my husbandry, especially with my 5 remaining T’s. An article in Arachnoboards suggested death happens, but I was hoping to get several more years from her. Not sure what advice you can give. I guess I’m just reaching out in grief. Amazing how attached you can get to your children. As always, thanks for all you and camera lady do to share your wealth of knowledge.
Sorry to hear of your loss , unfortunately we all lose some from time to time !, I keep a little humidity in all my Brachypelma enclosures and always make sure the food is well hydrated and a constant water bowl 👍
Never easy to lose a member of the family, as thats what all pets are to me and how i feel they should be considered. Obviously with some animals like Tarantulas, it's never easy to figure out the reasons for a sudden death when it happens out the blue and before their life expectancy, especially when you are honestly doing everything right to the best of your ability. But unfortunatley as you say it does happen to even the best of keepers. I think its good for new keepers and those with limited experience to see that it can and does happen to keepers with years of experience like yourself. It's also nice to see someone with such experience not afriad to show and admit that it has happened to them. Funnily enough the first T i ever lost was a avicularia versicolor, and that too like yours was out of the blue and for no apparent reaon.
So sorry for the Loss Dave being a new-be to keeping spiders I'm afraid of everything and watch your videos intently and fully understand what you mean. And having kept and raising other animals death sometimes is part of it and I'm never happy about a death. I'm so glad your covering this kind of unfortunate circumstance sometimes it happens ! Video as always very well done God bless.
With such a good attitude, i.e. proper care in every respect, speculating about death makes little/no sense. This can also have been a bacterium or a virus on a prey. It's useless. And what Dave says in the video is absolutely correct imho, sad as the early passing may be
I’ve lost 2 of my favorite spiders in a month... My subadult Brachypelma boehmei and my adult Harpactira pulchripes, so I know how much you start to doubt your own husbandry.. It can be really difficult to continue as you were doing.. Anyway sorry for the loss...
Spot on Advise Dave. Had a C Marshalli pop it’s clogs for no reason at all the other month. Replaced it with another. That’s kept exactly the same. And it’s thriving. Just one of those things. Sorry for the loss of your Avic mate.
Death is just part of life, even as a fish tank owner I do worry in the morning I’m gonna find one of my fish dead. I have a load of angelfish and they are my pride and joy to be honest. Same with the house cat, he almost got ran over couple of years ago but he made it and he’s a lucky boy.
This is a very important video and I believe that we need to talk about our spiders and other animals dying. I lost an avic avic in March after a molt but I also lost a lot of dogs, rabbits guinea pigs ferrets and chickens. So I want to thank you for this very important video ❤🕷
Sorry for your loss but thank you for turning a sad event into words of encouragement for others. Anyone who has a collection of t's will experience an unexplained loss. 🙂
I'm sorry for your loss Dave, I looked at it differently this guy knows what he's doing let's find out why the spider died. At 3:14 I'm thinking can we do an autopsy
Sorry for your loss mush... It defo wasn't me and my Dyson.... Ill have nightmares now watching all that lot in those tanks. Good video even if for a sad reason 👍. One question. What do you do with them when they have died mush?
I normally just dispose of them but I think I might send any in the future away to get mounted maybe. i don't get many to be fair this year I have only lost 2, 1 unknown cause and one in a bad moult a salie which are prone to moulting problems.
Does any one do post mortem on spiders? How is the male? Has she had anything at all you could see. You have not failed. I have utmost respect for your husbandry. Does any university study spiders? You deserve a Ph.D. in spiderology. I am a semi retired physician with an insatiable curiosity on all things especially sudden death. I find your channel very enlightening and comforting.
I watched a vid about spiders and one female had eaten every male that found her. After mating this girl chased down the male and killed him. I immediately thought Dave could have stopped her and got him to safety. I thought you'd enjoy that. Sorry for the loss and glad to know she wasn't a one of.
Well, as I'm a floofy old girl I'm sat here 😢 but .... I appreciate you doing this, I've been keeping jumping spiders for over a year now, I had 10, all mature and well 🤞 except for one, this one was young and 4 days after molting it passed away 💔 I went thru the emotions you described... what had I done wrong etc... but after doing my own head in about it I thought, actually, if it was my fault how had I got my others through their molts etc.. it was hard but I faced the fact that it just happened and there was nothing I could have done to stop it, thank you, but also sorry you lost her 😢💔 🫂
Ahhh never I was looking forward to seeing her produce an egg sack what a shame. Quick question do you replace the mesh on your eco terras for these Ts or do you keep the mesh? I see a lot of people saying never to have mesh then some say it’s not a problem I would like to hear your opinion and why?
Hi Callum, I have another 2 paired at the same time so fingers crossed we will still get an egg sack😂👍 and NO I don't replace the mesh tops I like the control it gives me for there environment and ive never had an issue with them either , I think theres a lot people following on with an account of someone having issues with them , Its difficult working out those who have first hand experience and those who just regurgitate everyone else as if there own, personaly I like them I think a good environment with good air flow is more important to me than anything else.
Hi Dave, sorry for your loss dude 😔 its shit when it happens dude. Unfortunately things happen dont they when you keep so many spiders. Could have been anything even down to just a bad feeder etc.. good luck with the others dude 🤘🤘
I'm new to the hobby and only have two. One is a little E. campestratus sling and she's buried and hardly moves for three weeks now. Hoping it's just premolt, she was eating like a champ when I got her. But there's always that little nagging worry you know? Oh well. I just keep her water dish topped off and keep an eye out. Hope for the best. Sorry about your Avic man.
Always sucks to have a spider die too early without any indication why it died I do notice that you use the 20x20x30 exo terra’s for your arboreal spiders, would a terrarium like that be big enough for a male phormingochilus sp. Sabah blue, I got one with my female and I don’t really want to put it in a 30x30x45 (the size I keep my females in)
My pink toe and Red knee died like this. Suddenly. Both were about 3 years old. My Chilean rose died during molting. But, I just bought more spiders and they are still going strong. Cobalt blue is next on my list. 🙂
I'm going to do taxidermy with my tarantulas when they pass, put them in shadow boxes, and hang them on the wall. I'm planning on getting jumping spiders and when they pass I'm going to put them in those tiny jars with cork lids that you get from the dollar store.
You’ve experienced many death’s Dave, but it’s obvious the ‘mystery’ death hits hardest given life expectancy. I’m a scientist though and don’t believe in coincidence - is it not possible that something to do with the reproductive system was not right? I mean, the abdomen holds the developing eggs right? What if there’s a blockage? You’re the expert, I know nothing, but I’m biased towards investigating the whole cycle from insemination to egg-sac before being confident it played no part - it’s still sad though, like anything you spend years caring for - you’re emotionally invested and don’t expect to come in to see your pet dead. I’ve fed tired bumble bees sugar and water and it’s always nice to see them fly away. Your sadness is visible though, which makes it sadder, still being so gentle with her, sorry pal, you’ll never get less sensitive to it.
Yes it could be egg related and quit often is , I made this video to show new comers to the hobby that sometimes there just is no reason that is obvious , a lot of beginners beat themselves up over the loss of a spider when its not always down to there care 👍

This is already an invaluable resource for new comers, you’ve built up a cracking wealth of experience and knowledge which you impart effortlessly; the camera footage compliments it perfectly to. It’ll come in handy when the wife kicks me back into the shed after Xmas. 😬
