The Ultimate Mini Laptop Build???

  • Опубліковано 16 бер 2023
  • I recently found a unique 7 inch mini laptop on AliExpress and I just had to get it. I've created an unboxing video and some follow up videos and now I use it every evening to browse the web, code, and play simple games. Check out my videos to find out more!
    Despite a few flaws, I'm determined to make this mini laptop a workhorse. It gets too hot when playing something basic like Minecraft for an hour, plus I discovered a hidden USB-C port in the back. In this video, I'm going to take care of both issues and make this pocket PC a powerhouse!
    **********************************************
    UPDATE!! - I've now created a forum for everyone to discuss issues, modifications, use cases, and more. Take a look at www.slagle-tec... for answers to questions you may have, or post your question there and see if other actual users can help out.

    I feel so guilty about encouraging you to drill out the slot, now! The 3D print fix was way better than I expected, actually, and I'm really glad to see the laptop's still working!

      No need to feel guilty. Even without the insert the pc is more useful with the USB-C access.
      And I didn’t post it to make anyone feel bad. More to show that accidents can happen and we just have to roll with the punches sometimes.

      @@S-Technology As I am pretty sure I recognize my love of ellipsis dots and my use of the phrase "feeling fancy" in the "you should Dremel it out" montage... I did feel a brief bit of guilt. I'm glad you rolled with them punches, and I laughed at the cost slide. Just a thought... because clearly the solution is to double down on mauling the case: instead of trying to make a round hole, what if you tried two vertical cuts and a horizontal one removing a rectangular chunk of the body plate, then you could have a more regular shape to try and fit a 3d printed insert into? 😇
      I return to my internet hole after that.

    • @S-Technology
      @S-Technology  Рік тому +7

      @@jyoung-dj1zr Once I saw the USB-C port on the back it was pretty much guaranteed to be cut open. So there should be no guilt. I appreciated all the encouragement I received.
      I will probably end up making it more a rounded rectangle shape. It's more that the case has a slight rounded edge that makes a portion stick up. I know my OCD. If I don't get it closer I'll rub my finger on it and end up breaking it off.
      Keep the comments and ideas coming.

    I see it's already been mentioned but when applying thermal paste don't do it in dabs, that creates gaps where there's no paste and can actually make things worse. Spread a thin film of paste on both sides and I mean very thin, you don't want to create a sandwich with a filling in the middle. Place the heat sink on top and slide it about to push out any air and ensure a close fit with no gaps.
    Anyone wanting to utilise that USB-C socket I would suggest making a small hole first with a hand drill, the use a file to slowly grind out the hole to the correct size. If you let rip with a Dremel you can easily over do it and of course you can't put metal back.
    The best way to keep it cool is to get a mini computer type fan and maybe build it into a stand, I think you can buy such a stand online complete with a USB fan that's what I use.

    I pulled mine apart to put thermal paste between the heatsink plates, too. the idle temps dropped from ~60C to 35C lmao, likely because the original thermal paste application used way too much paste for the bendy-low clamping pressure heatsink to squeeze off the die. I still haven't had the gumption to drill out access to the USB-C port, though.

    • @S-Technology
      @S-Technology  Рік тому

      If you do drill it out just take it slow. I started off small and stepped up the sizes slowly. But just moving it up one size is when the drill grabbed it and twisted the side.
      The newer Dremel should be able to cut it with the right blades.

    I have one of these and after watching this video i have decided to leave it well alone. The temps aren't bad for a laptop, considering my last two laptops frequently hit 99c on the cpu and were fine with that. One good idea though is to buy a 12v pd barrel adapter, works good for charging with a pd battery bank or laptop usb-c charger.

    • @S-Technology

      99 C is really hot for a CPU. Above 80 is hot by most of the ratings I have read.
      I got a variable PD charger (can adjust it between 5v to 20v) thinking I could use it for other items, but it was dead on delivery from Amazon. Do you have one you would recommend or works well?

    I recently purchased a new Lenovo ThinkPad 11e for around $CAD225 (about 75 cents $USD), so I did a little research. Your laptop has a Celeron J4105 or J4125 CPU, while the Lenovo has an N4120. There are two striking differences. The J-series has a higher base clock speed than the N-series (1.6 vs 1.1 GHz), and the J-series consumes 10w while the N-series uses 6w. So there are two key reasons why the itty-bitty unit you have is getting hotter than my Lenovo: higher base clock speed and higher power consumption. Not intending to boast, but I imagine the Lenovo probably has a better cooling setup, despite being fanless and having a plastic case. Interesting comparison! :)

    FWIW those thick silpads do not have great thermal conductivity, a lot better than air obviously but still not great. A better solution (thermally) would be a suitable thickness of aluminium bonded to the case with a thermal epxoy, and then a thin silpad to connect it to the CPU heatsink.

    I don't know the first thing about thermal paste and the best way to do something but if airflow and distributing is the key I do have a suggestion. If there is space to put that pad on the outside of the 2nd thermal cover and get the casing back on,it should all go back together if say u wedged one of those thermal pads BETWEEN the 2 thermal covers,leaving a space separated by thermal foam. Even that little space would provide air between to eliminate some of the heat before it even hits the second thermal cover. Kinda like the blade of a thermal block

    If I understand correctly that there is space between the sheets?? I think you should try sandwiching a sheet of copper in between. So long as it's isolated from the circuitry, it won't cause any shorts and copper conducts heat way better than aluminum. There are only 2 ways to do passive cooling and since you're dealing with a very small space, passive airflow across fins is not an option, so the only option is to create as much mass as possible to store/dissipate the heat. The only problem could be the screw length if you add too much depth.

    To create the cut-out since its metal were dealing with should really have been carried out by an different tool and method... the same way you would normally say cut out ports on an cylinder or indeed fabricate or machine to fine tolerance any similiar material accurately...Given the size of the port you should have first drilled with an drill either overhead or hand drilled it doesnt matter as long as your "bores" the holes you drill are all smaller in diameter and width than the port...then using an collection of small files hand file down the metal edges till they meet accurately the bores width height and even its oval shape...by doing this you would always have more material to work with and not go oversize aswell the opportunity to carefully file down the bore to meet precisely and exactly its dimensions and an Dremel is an handy tool but isnt really an finishing tool (since its difficult to control) in fact its bound to make an mess and its usually used for convienance as an quick start if its to successfully achieve an hand file finish...this is how metal is usually worked by hand to achieve such fine tolerances and an hand finish with the correct assortment of files always gives the best result...

    Why does the lil' laptop need two aluminum plates?
    It seems like heat is spreading from chip to grease to a plate to some more grease to another plate to the pad to the case. Maybe if the second plate was removed you could destroy the.. I mean you could simplify things so the heat goes from the chip to grease to plate to pad to the casing and you might be able to use the whole size of the pad, which might be better? Or something?

    • @S-Technology
      @S-Technology  Рік тому +1

      It came with 2 and my guess is that they tried to use the little fan to pull hot air from the 2 plates. I wanted to do a little change to see the effects.
      But, I think that is the next logical step, to basically use the tried and true K.I.S.S. (Keep It Super Simple) method and remove that extra plate.

    • @longdang2681
      @longdang2681 Рік тому

      @@S-Technology I would be tempted to try a thin thermal pad instead of thermal paste if the heatsink has unstable pressure(as it's sponginess guarantees contact). I'm thinking that they might have doubled the heatsink plates because a single one might be too thin to apply adequate pressure due to the mounting screws being far apart.

    • @S-Technology
      @S-Technology  Рік тому

      @@longdang2681 That's an interesting idea. Maybe one of those thin thermal pads that are used with Raspberry Pi's.
      I kept the plates thinking their initial plan was to have some air between the plates and have the fan move that air out. Kind of like a thin but wide radiator fins on a car. But at this point I think removing one of them would be better. I've thought of using just a straight thermal pad from the CPU to the outer casing. But I'm worried there would be nothing protecting the CPU from everyday use of the laptop.

    great video, bro! funny too, I love that dog.
    I think it's freakin insane that they covered up the C port. why, in hell would they do something this stupid? my guess is that nobody tests the final product. I, say that as I remember that, so many books that I've ever read, had a type o. that, and the multitude of online sites have aspects that do no work. or, are ridiculously hard to use. many times, I wish the punishment for something that bad should be making the creator use it. it's obvious that he never tested it or that the author never checked his work for accuracy.
    think about it. nowadays, that C port is a hot item and a huge selling point in my opinion. I'm fixin to use my wonderful C port on my MSI motherboard muahahaha!
    you, messing around with that cute little laptop reminds me of a mini hp laptop(?), called the Journada, that I had about 20 years ago. it was awesome. it was about the size and shape of a black, biker style wallet. I was involved in the beta testing of it using mini AOL 2.0. very exciting times. I had to hook it up to a telephone line to get internet back then. I think it was called dial up, or something. my desktop was up to like AOL 8.0, maybe? that was so long ago. hahaha you were prolly in elementary school back then. I'm sure it really helped in developing the smartphones that we have today.
    if you get bored, maybe look it up? like, I said hp Journada. I can't remember the model number. 720? 920, maybe? it was the top of the line offering. oh! and it was purple, lolz

    Yep. I'm gonna be "that" guy: When your CPU/ GPU has no heat spreader, NEVER do the "bean-size dab" technique when applying thermal compound:
    If you leave a part of the die uncovered, it can get seriously damaged, because the heat it produces has no way of escaping the die.
    So never risk this.
    Make sure you have thermal compound all over the die.
    Especially in your case, you are not applying enough pressure and the sink is too "bendy" to spread the compound evenly. You can see this in 4:44. Why apply dabs of thermal paste around, when you are clearly missing heat conduction in the center, just above the chip?

      I appreciate being called out when I make an error. My "idea" was that the stamp out on the aluminum was designed as a heat sink. But you are right, it's a heat sink and not a spreader.

      Can you guys expand on that? I recvd the same laptop & looking to make the same adjustments. (I got some artic x4) so (1)I should put paste on the whole square that the processor rests on, rght? And (2)What do u think is a better application pattern for the sink? Thx in advance. (1st time doing this)
