Love how the color of the body and headstock changes as the angle of the guitar changes relative to the lighting. Very cool effect. I have 6 Ibanez axes and already know I want the RG550 in road flare red, but after watching this video now I want it in purple neon too.
Watching you is like looking into a mirror at myself 30 years ago when I discovered the perfect guitar I still prefer over all others to this day. It is an moment of initiation in which you might feel that this love might last forever.
You really can do the Crossroads Vai thing of grabbing the guitar by the whammy bar and the headstock and just shaking it to death. Still in Tune. No idea how but it just works.
Couple of things: there's a third difference between this and the OG 550, the Genesis has a volute while the OG 550 had a scarf joint. But that's an actual improvement like the 5 piece neck. And yes, the 550 was originally known as the ''poor man's JEM'', basically a more stripped down version of the JEM, minus all the bells & whistles. Ibanez sold them by the bucketloads back in the day. The V7/8 pickups are supposedly Ibanez' version of the Dimarzio Tone Zone/ Air Norton, similar design and output.
The best part about these are how mod friendly they are. For my RG3250, I changed the pickguard for an HH setup with one pot, threw some BKP Black Hawks in there, and made the one volume pot a push pull coil split. It's literally my favorite guitar, and I've owned Mayones, Kiesel, Charvel, Aristides, etc... HNGD!
Yeah they're like Strats with how much mods you can do. You could go full 80s or anything if you want. Normally hated the wizard necks and basswood (due to dings easily) but got a RG550 and it's loads of fun. I have Artistides/PRS too and the RG550 is just a beast.
Maaaaaaan, i just got the desert yellow one, what a coincedent. I payed 880€ new. Its a steal. Everithing you said on point. For me its the guitar i will not mess with, no new pickups no nothing. Just leave it as it is, its a classic, take it for what it is and enjoy it. Great video, thanks a lot.
Hay there! Ihave the Guitar now 7 or 8 month and what should i say, its one if not the best guitar i ever owned. I play guitar over 20 years now , also i played for years in metal bands and had a lot of different brands. Esp, Ltd, Dean, Jackson, B.C Rich, Washburn but nothing plays and feels like that one. Ibanez is my absolute favorite and my Jackson is on second place. Great video ! Greethings from Austria/Vienna 🙂
I own a 2017 RG652FX that has the same extremely thin Super Wizard neck and I completely understand the love. It's effortless to play. You can easily get your thumb on the back of it because it has a D shape with a flat back, so you can grip it nice when you want to do fast arpeggio runs, then, when you want to do a 5 semitone bend, because it's so thin, it's completely out of the way allowing your wrist to rotate freely. Another factor is that the neck is slightly wider than most other guitars. The combo of super thin, a flat back D shape, and the width, makes it my favorite guitar neck. I've owned and sold an Ernie Ball JP, and currently own a Kiesel Aries with the thin neck option. I like the Ibanez Super Wizard neck the best. The Ibanez Genesis guitars are sleepers. Japanese made with the original god-like Edge trem for $999? It's competitive. The only negative is the pickups need to be changed. If you're not into the flashy 80's looks or floating trems, they have the Genesis RF521 that have solid colors and fixed bridges for $899, but I think they discontinued them, so they may be harder to find, or you may be able to get them for a great price when they go on sale!
You play beautifully my friend, wow and you just sold me on this guitar. I have 10 or 11 already and God knows I don't need another but a local shop has one and this video is what convinced me. I never got to experience Ibanez I've been a charvel and Jackson player and had recently been thinking about it. Now it's time. Thank you
I have an original UK import version which was made in '91 (I got it late 92). It's still all stock. Superb guitar. Too delicate for most people to play. This guitars like a spitfire or a grand prix car. I have played my 91 almost every day since i bought it and its been at every gig i've ever played since i got it. It's never been dropped or fallen over. It's my favourite thing in my studio by a mile.
Man Ibanez is definetly something else, I’ve got two RG’s and I love them, but IMO it’s true that those pups lack that modern “djentiness” that your charvel had, Idk , it’s a different guitar but you seem very happy and inspired about it, and that’s all that matters anyway. Looks are amazing in this one btw, cheers!
Imho Ibanez is using their own pickups as a sort of decent placeholders as most players put in their pickups of choice anyway. And thats a good thing, because if they equip each guitar with top-brand pickups, they'd cost more for something you don't use.
I just recently picked up a great quality white 1987 RG550, and it's such a dream to play. Incredibly resonant and effortless. After a neck sanding and fret leveling, it's playing like air.
Actually the Super Wizard profile is pretty much the original 1987 Wizard. Ibanez Strayed from the original Wizard profile with the likes of RG2550 and RG1570 but still called it Wizard in the early 2000's. The Super Wizard neck is very close to the original but it's indeed a 5-piece neck instead of the one piece original. Also it has the bump beneath the nut because the original ones broke pretty easily if the guitar toppled over. There's also another difference. The neck in the Genesis series has a bigger contact area with the body. The old ones had a neck joint where the fretboard was a bit longer than the actual neck. You can't see it without removing the pickguard. In the Genesis RG550 the neck and fretboard are the same length. The differences are not big and they actually make the very thin neck more durable but since we are comparing... These are things you can't find in the spec sheets and are hard to spot without both versions in the same room.
I have the RG550LTD (made in japan) in the same color as yours! It has seen much abuse and experimentation. After many many years I play it again although it has a slightly warped neck. These old RG necks are like "tooth picks". Hard to imagine that your neck is even thinner! I like the arrangement of the synths in the snippet of your new song. Well done.
Had been considering one of these for a while and this video convinced me. Played one of the OG RG550’s as a kid and always wanted one. Can’t wait for it to get here! Also I really liked your song The Maze.
I believe you about the tuning stability..I too bought one in desert yellow color and the tuning is like you said is a monster.. I'm so proud of mine too.. I was an Ibanez user back in the late 80s and early 90s and then I switched to Gibson till last year when I bought this .... 😀 .. thank you Ibanez
@@mylogify yes they are both the reissue guitars. They are better than the originals in so many ways. 5 piece necks with a valuate instead of a scarf joint makes it a no brainer for me.
@Luke it requires some more steps to change the strings compared to a fixed bridge, which if you change strings very often can be a bit annoying. But on the other hand this particular guitar has a great floating trem and it stays in tune wonderfully. The floyd sits a little lower than a fixed bridge, so you have to adjust your palm muting technique a bit, other than that it is just great.
I think the advantage of having guitar pickups attached to the pick guard you can swap the pickups by switching the pick guards. Correct me if I'm wrong 😅
I bought this one and its insane i love it but it was not set up i mean the floyd was to high now i have to sent it to guitar shop and make it how it should be. But yeah the tuning stability is insane i started to learn dive bombs and after 30mins stretching hard the strings the guitar goes out of tune but i understand...the strings are from the shop. Like u said once u set up this guitar never will go out of tune.
Nice vid and beautiful color! I love that guitar... I have a few questions before I buy it... how good is the sustain? Keeping in mind that the neck is very thin, does it have a nice and sweet full tone? or it more sharper?
so smooth too, far smoother than the Schaller on the Caparison I had or the German/Korean OFRs. Equal to the Gotoh (aren't they both Gotoh made?) but the pop-in arm on the Edge is unbeatable
Nice! I've got the same one in road flare red. Normally id throw in a Paf Pro and Tone Zone but I ended up liking the stock pickups. The split coil positions sound incredible with cleans. They do lack a bit of punch next to modern pickups but honestly they sound fine in a mix
Exactly my constatation too. They sound a bit weak compared to modern pickups, however they do really sing and give you wonderful cleans. I'm missing a bit of top end though.
I regret selling my 97 rg 550 LTD with the purple mirror so much. It was really beat up. But the neck is the slickest one thing i ve touched in my life.
I have to say I prefer fret edges not to be super round like some companies do. It does feel nice to the touch but, I feel like I’m more prone to accidentally fretting out when I’m using vibrato. Again for that reason I prefer well dressed but not overly done fret dressing.
Was hoping you were going to make a come back to ibanez. Now u just need a 7 string prestige. You will be happy man. I own 9 prestige’s and love each one
The edge bridges are AMAZING. I have an old S series ibanez with a lo pro edge. Also has an ultra thin neck with an HSS setup (EMG 81, EMG S pickups). No cutaway at the neck but its fine. I wish manufacturers used edge pro bridges instead of floyd rose originals. The trem just feels better for divebombing and subtle tremolo use
yeah like I know the higher end FRs are equally good but the Edge is so much smoother. A "Gotoh Ibby" direct swap for FRs would be amazing. Would be an instant upgrade to anything with FR Specials and probably cost less than OG FRs.
Just bought one in this colour- this exact guitar. Have to wait at least a month for delivery though! 😑 I originally wanted the white one, but Ibanez have discontinued that one for some reason. Because of this, the purple started as a firm second choice behind the white, but I'm not sure now! The purple is a beauty too!
I bought a Charvel dk24 satin shell pink, the nut was blown out from the factory. It made the guitar lifeless and without sustain. I’m buying either the fender esque new Ibanez AZ, or a premium rg with the edge pro trem and a genesis.
Gorgeous guitar Milian! im hoping to purchase one in the next few months, either in this purple colour or desert yellow. thanks for the vid and lovely playing also.
Thanks for the nice review. I have Ibanez GRG170DX and S520 (with Edge-II). Since the last few years, I have been playing mainly blues, with clean or slight chrunchy tones. Would it be able to produce straty sounds on the middle S1 single coil pickup? Are the volumes on all pickups balanced? I have Boss Katana 100 amp. I am not considering strat-type guitars as I am quite comfotrable with Ibanez slim necks. Also, with Edge, I can go crazy if I want to. So all in all I am really considering this guitar. Your respond would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
Dope! I have an Ibanez RG350MZ (Yellow), which is a very similar model, but I'm thinking about getting one of this Purple beauty! By the way, which pedal/effect are you using from 9:30? Are you using a Amp drive with a booster? That is a sick tone!
don't swap the pickups! a guitar does not have to do everything. just buy more and more guitars. problem solved.
Yezzzz, exactly !!!!
Lol
Spoken like a true guitarist. LOL
What a stupid comment. Pick ups don't change the entire sound of the guitar. They add flavor to the sound of the guitar.
Those V series pickups are pretty sweet. I magnet swapped mine and put them into a strat.
Love how the color of the body and headstock changes as the angle of the guitar changes relative to the lighting. Very cool effect. I have 6 Ibanez axes and already know I want the RG550 in road flare red, but after watching this video now I want it in purple neon too.

I wouldn't ever change a thing but the strings, its not often you bond with a guitar that you wanna have forever. Sometimes stock is just perfect.
Saving for it. I'm literally in love with this guitar and I haven't touched it yet
Tuning and neck stability are so good on Ibanez guitars. I have 2 RG's that are over 15 years old that have never needed a neck adjustment.
You really can do the Crossroads Vai thing of grabbing the guitar by the whammy bar and the headstock and just shaking it to death. Still in Tune.

Bought this a few weeks back. It’s an amazing guitar and the quality of the build is flawless for the price. Thx Japan!

Not too sure if its all that similair, i tried a RFR genesis model and the neck was actually thicker than the 1993 550 i own

All the RG models had the tilt neck joint from 1987 to 93, not just the 550

I'm so happy that they're making chameleon finishes again. What a fucking cool colour.
This guitar with fish man fluence!!!
Plus the prestige label and a hardshell case with multi tool, then it will cost around 1700$ 👌
My Japanese Jackson is the same, I can tune the Floyd Rose and I dont have to retune at all until I have to change the strings.
Just awesome. Everytime. 🤘🤘🤘
I swapped out the pickups in my 92' rg550...bridge-dimarzio evo...neck-dimarzio air norton...and it shreds!..I would highly recommend the combo
Wow it's the same "Nebula burst" from Silver Sky that everyone is losing their shit over!
It's beautiful!
Ibanez have done colour changing finishes for ages. The JS 90th HAM was another one. Shame PRS are seen as "innovators".
I used to own the RG from 1994 with the same colour and the mirror pickguard. I wish I’d never sold it!
I just bought the original rg 550 90s one oooohhh yeah a beautifull guitar.
