Keeping your present car is far more green than buying new.

Exactly. It takes a huge amount of energy and resources to make a new car, gas car or ev.

Agreed, and that's why I found the VW Diesel nonsense to be mildly funny. Many cars that had a decent life ahead of them, were scrapped because they were making more pollution than allowed. They were replaced with new cars, which make a lot of pollution (and CO2) to manufacture. Those in charge of this decision likely didn't do an in depth impact study.
Same with the "cash for clunkers" program. Many perfectly good cars were destroyed, and replaced with car models that got modestly better gas mileage. It's great to get better efficiency, but if the total energy used and CO2 produced exceeds the savings, it's a bone headed decision.

      It's the first of the 3 R's
      Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
It's more green to Use a single vehicle and not getting rid of it until it cost more to use it then getting rid of it then it is keep swapping out cars Every year.
Reduce the need to buy every new car model.
Reuse it until it's not worth it anymore.
Recycle it to someone else who can afford to fix it who will then pass it to someone who can reuse it. Reducing the need for a new vehicle overall.
The biggest driver to CC the evo's constantly cry is Over production and planned obsolescence
Their push for EV's ironically just like Nearly all of their Eco efforts drive More destruction then it solves

Well you know what they say about back-seat drivers. "If you do not like how I drive, then you drive the car". Until all those "assists" can fully drive the car, I think we have the right to ask questions and be skeptical. I have heard of trash trucks that suddenly hit the brakes, because they see a trash cart in the middle of the road, except that it is not, the road is just twisty. Until they design it better, we need to be able to override that garbage. Airplane pilots are still trusted more than the computers.
I actually love the idea of fully autonomous self-driving technology, as I am tired of driving. But it is not quite to that level yet.

The 2X brake assist would’ve been helpful, once when a deer ran out in front of me and once when a car swerved across in front of me at the last moment to make an exit ramp, the damn thing didn’t even react. Then once when we were looking at property I was backing down a pig trail on the side of a mountain and out of nowhere it slams on the brakes. It scared the crap out my wife. She was like why the hell did you slam on brakes like that, I said I didn’t the car did. I got out to see what was going on, a f’ing wet leaf had stuck to the camera. SMH

Has anyone done a full and truthful calculation of how much pollution/emissions are created from start to finish of the manufacture/wrecking/recycling and or the propensity to self destruct with toxic chemicals and HEAT are released into the atmosphere? A 10 to 15 YO ICE has already had the pollution from manufacture dispersed and absorbed and dissipated into the atmosphere. Just imagine 1 giant volcano going off can put more nasties into the atmosphere than whatever we mere humans do. The biggest influence on us I am of the belief is the orange nuclear reactor giving us life on our little blue dot. Another odd revelation is that many are against nuclear power but our son gives us life and in the most part, a comfortable one.

@howardj602 - I most certainly was not denigrating the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the underground Cuban workshops in producing panels and accessories. I was mainly referring to the powerplants. Sure, some were able to use wax castings to reproduce pre-1960 US engine blocks, the majority were, however, replaced with Soviet 4 cylinder diesels (and, later, Mercedes-Benz diesels).
Small diesel engines were preferred, over petrol V8s, as they were far cheaper to maintain and run.
In a similar fashion, 1970's Holdens can still be found in my country. However, due to the petrol hungry nature of the old 6 cylinder red motors, pop the bonnet of the remaining examples and you'll generally find a Japanese 4 cylinder.

As a person that worked at Oreilly Auto Parts for 7 years, I can tell you what the government will do to keep this from happening. They already are doing it. Parts that were availave readily for older vehicles just seemed to no longer be available, just out of the blue. Parts that we commonly ordered pre pandemic became scarse for older vehicles and are now no longer available. And every year it seemed like the shortage of parts became more and more for newer and newer cars and trucks. I think it was around the 25 year old mark where it starts becoming hard to find parts. Even my 2wd 04 Dodge Dakota, some suspension parts are now junk yard only items.

@@caleroby9483 Toyotas view was that getting 2 people into a hybrid, cut emissions by about the same as getting 1 into an EV. If we want to cut emissions, we should be pushing people towards EVs, and hybrids for those who a full EV is not suitable. If neither is suitable, surprise, surprise - petrol and diesel are still widely available, and will be for a long time.
The vast majority of the zealots I see, particularly on this site, have a weird irrational fear about EVs. It's pretty simple - if you don't want an EV, or a mini, or a Ford F250 - don't get one. Spending your life whinging about stuff you aren't going to get is a bit nuts.
