If EV chargers are safe put them underneath government offices with no fire precautions whatsoever.
Or require the EV proponents to practise what they preach. Both in their homes and places of work. Unless their place of work is a Heritage site or the like. The risk may not be all that high, but the consequences are dire if it happens - actually the Precautionary Principle will be well applied here.
Funny enough, I am a electrical engineer(early in my career). We had a large multi storey building with a bunch government agencies who wanted EV charging installed in a underground carpark. Happy to say, they edded up canning the idea due to the fire brigade advice resulting the building managers not wanting to accept the risk.

Those who argue against the fire dept's advice should be held liable for any lives annulled as a result.
Laws regarding fire prevention pertaining to EV's must be strictly enforced, but the desire to abolish free speech stems from the same totalitarian attitudes that are shoving EV's down our throats to begin with.

Well, THE MOST COMMON FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WILL NOT PUT OUT THE BATTERIES ON FIRE! Just a heads up from a former fighter here. Oh and expect your whole house to be drenched wet after that battery fire takes up lots of water.

The sprinkler will do nothing against a raging EV fire.
It suppresses the flames cools things down to reduce damage and stops spread to nearby objects

The climate is doing just fine. It does not need saving. The earth has been here for around 4 BILLION years (yes, that's billion with a B) and it's still here. The idea that humans are destroying it in under 100 years is absolutely preposterous.

I later admitted to being wrong and that I had gotten caught up in what was "correct" at the time. I trusted the wrong people.
Hopefully a lot of ev fans will do the same, soon. I know what they are feeling like. It's this mindset where you think, "It isn't possible that all those seemingly reputable sources could be wrong about this".

In all seriousness, it is a perfectly good argument to use when people say there's no danger in charging EVs in underground parking. You're transferring a large amount of energy very rapidly, just like at a filling station and you would never do that with fuel without all the systematic protections the design of the station includes. Fuel stations don't go up often due to those protections but we accept there is a certainty over time of a large, serious fire and we don't shove them under high occupancy structures without a *lot* of work and a damned good reason.

I watched a vid on YT about battery fires and it said they were banned from the underground carpark ( The one Airey Neave was murdered in ) around 2 years ago. I couldn't find the rule on the web site where you could book a parking spot in it though.

Like always it will take an EV fire in an apartment block that kills dozens before there is any sanity in this situation. Remember too that all this stuff is new. What happens when it is 10 years old and has been ragged and shagged and ends up tucked under a ton of rubbish in a corner?
Good point and retrospectively thinking has it happened already and been covered up or a gas main explosion used as an excuse.
Hope it's not my apartment block, a tenant just got a new Tesla, there are no rules, (yet), to stop EV charging in apartment garages.

I expect, as usual, someone will get to the head of their organizations with money or threats, mandates will then come down from the top management making the employees shut up or lose their jobs and pensions, a whistleblower or two will come forward to be mocked, ignored, ridiculed, prosecuted, or found dead "by his own hand". In the UK, such is the lack of govt forward thinking on future energy needs, our electricity generation has little spare capacity. By 2040 if everything was electric, air source heat pumps, EV vehicles and fully electric homes, offices and industry, we would need FOUR times our current supply! Somehow we're going to meet this demand without any carbon fuel. Forty years of appalling mismanagement does not fill me with any confidence for the future for my grandkids. Hellscape.

The U.S. Department of Energy forecasts a need for governments around the world to collectively spend $9.6 TRILLION USD from 2025 through 2050 to address the energy infrastructure and other issues related to decreasing CO2 emissions. This level of spending will result in significant increases in poverty levels and will lead to loss of life (especially among the very young and very old).

Hi fellow, you are spot on. Already worked this out, Wind farms are like going back to sailing ships and solar panels while helpful are least useful in winter and are expensive. You need nuclear, hydro and tidal and gas the cleanest of fossil fuels. We will be heading for power cuts and sky high electricity prices to fuel inflation.
My local shopping centre has a tripple decker car park with the bottom floor having six EV charging points. These are located close to the main doors of the shops. It seems to me that they put the EV chargers in the worst possible place with the least natural ventilation and the worst access for fire fighting vehicles. If there is an EV battery fire potentially hundreds of people will placed in a life threatening situation. Completely irresponsible and just begging for a class action law suit.
They probably put them there as it was easier/cheaper than anywhere else..... Money over safety.
There are far more fires in petrol cars but nobody seems to worry about that.

@@ralpharmsby8040 You can't get cobalt poisoning from a petrol car fire. Look up what happened to 2 unfortunate Victorian firefighters who got cobalt poisoning from an EV fire and have had to retire as they are permanently disabled.
Fire protection engineer here, we have been told to increase the flow from each sprinkler from 5mm/min to 7.5mm/min to cater for EVs. In reality, this will just keep the fire from spreading until the fire brigade get there.
Once the brigade are on site, they will use their standard firefighting hydrants to attack the fire but in reality, will not be able to put it out, the EV would need to be fully submerged for about a week.
How much water are we wasting for the in the name of going green?
More to the point, how much water is flushing highly toxic, environmentally damaging chemicals down drains or into watercourses, where it cannot be properly contained and treated - all in the name of going green?

Interestingly, many of the EV fans are big proponents of solar and wind power, but oppose nuclear power because failures at nuclear plants, though extremely rare, have huge impacts. These same people are blind to applying that logic to EV fires.
Pro nuclear people are blind to the fact that no long term storage solution for radio active waste has been found. It stays radioactive for 100s of years. EV fires are less likely than ICE car fires BTW.

If you can't trust the experts you sure can trust the insurance agents (when it come to setting premiums.... not claims)
I don't agree with all experts (climate change, Covid 19, to say only 2). However, in this case, Fire Prevention Experts know the dangers and woe betide any body or organisation that ignores them.
Will await with bated breath for the insurance risk assessments.
Everybody's house insurance will go up through the roof faster than an EV fire to pay for this bs.
If there's one thing you can guarantee, it's insurance companies doing the risk assessment and adjusting insurance policies accordingly.
Unfortunately this affects ALL insurance not only EV insurance.
Notice how your insurance has been creeping up over the last few years? Mine has been an extra 1.5% year on year OVER the average 2.7% running average over 10 years.

From a ex-armourers point of view, you could class these as explosives 1.3. Which is explosives that have a fire hazard and either a minor blast, projection hazard or both. As fireworks are classed as 1.4, explosion is confined mainly to the package and no projection of fragments of size ejected. Believe me it's a minefield (Pun intended) when dealing with bang.
Veery interesting! So applying existing hazardous material rules to EVs class them as rather high risk. Does that take into account the amount of material? EV batteries are big, heavy so contains rather a lot of active chemicals after all.

And how do you cut the electrical power to the flame engulfed EV while charging it? 40A is a lot of external juice to keep the chemical reaction in an EV fire while trying to keep the heat down from a sprinkler system.

EV's are the gift that keeps coming for this channel. A UK report has just found that in built up areas an EV is 3x more likely to hit a pedestrian. They accelerate fast but not as good at stopping and of course are very quiet. Look forward to your video on this report.

The thought of what could happen if they put EV charging points in underground car parks of high rise apartment buildings is terrifying.
No sprinkler system will have any effect on an EV fire.
While sprinklers won't effect the EV that's on fire, it will help prevent that fire from spreading to surrounding areas and vehicles, allowing people to exit the structure.
We're all at the mercy of the character that puts the battery together, be it human or robot, is there an EV equivalent to the 70s "Friday afternoon car"

Regardless of one's thinking about the viability of EVs, it is incredibly reckless that fire safety standards have not been adopted industry wide. There is no standard method to disconnect the high voltage battery in an emergency. There is no standard method for accessing the battery with fire fighting agents. There is no standard for opening locked doors on EVs in an emergency situation. It isn't even safe to us conventional power tools to cut through the bodies of EVs without putting the emergency responders at great risk. While there is no way to make an EV "safe" things could move much closer to making them safer simply by standardization. Heck, they don't even have standard charging connectors!
An ego the size of Elon Musk don't need no stinkin' standards.

Decades ago, some cargo airplanes that carried large amounts of lithium batteries caught fire and burned down so quickly. This lead to the banning of lithium batteries in cargo planes.
Ross De Rango should be sued for all damages caused by Electric Fires in apartment buildings and be criminally responsible for any injuries or deaths incurred by his statement.

Just did a conference with Australasian Fleet Education & Leadership Summit and the government departments pushing full speed ahead with changing their fleets to EV is full on ..
Insurance companies will have EVs banned from parking anywhere near a structure. I don’t think a sprinkler system would do anything to stop the fire or the spread after watching a fire department trying to put one out.
On a slightly different note -
We recently had a fire in a house near to us where a clothes dryer inside a garage had ignited and burned out the whole roof. It was only because of a prompt response from the local fire service that the house itself didnt also go up in flames.
Having seen this, there is no way in the world that I would allow a lithium ion battery of over .5kWh to be charged up anywhere inside my property. Apart from the obvious potential for danger to life, it is also possible that my insurance will be voided. Neither risk I am willing to contemplate.
(I also dont have an air clothes dryer - but if I did, I wokld know to clean the lint trap out regularly).
@pmkeith .. The risk of a clothes dryer fire increases dramatically if the filters aren't cleaned regularly.
The user manual will state this, yet customers miss it or ignore it.

In London there were 135 house fires involving electric bike ... London fire brigade figures.
If you unplug the dryer and spray an ordinary garden hose on it you would probably have a good chance of putting it out. There is a video of a Tesla model x or y still burning underwater thanks to the oxygen containing electrolyte.

Suggestion …… if paper pushers want to over ride the opinions of fire professionals the solution is simple , have the office bound experts sign a document declaring themselves responsible for any and all deaths and damages . Money where their mouth is ?

Luton Car Park - enough said!
This is from the Bedford Fire and Rescue service not some anti EV bloke... A fire investigation into the blaze that broke out in a multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport was accidental, the fire service can confirm.
At its height, more than 100 firefighters tackled the fire, which started in the evening of 10 October 2023 and saw aircraft grounded until the following day.
Following the fire, a multi-agency investigation took place between Bedfordshire Police and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which finished this week.
As a result of the investigation, all evidence points to the most probable cause being an electrical fault or component failure, which started in the engine bay of the vehicle whilst it was in motion.
The developing fire spread to other components, and whilst the owner of the vehicle attempted to fight the fire, the vehicle became overrun with flames and spread to other parked vehicles.
The vehicle involved was diesel-powered - it was not a mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle.

@@ralpharmsby8040 If what you claim is true, the ferocity of the fire, which does not happen with ICE was undoubtedly cause by adjacent EV in the carpark, there were numerous fire extinguishers that had been used, and a normal extinguisher is all that is needed to put out an ICE fire, especially a diesel ICE because diesel does not burn well in open air. No previous ICE only fire has ever burned down a concrete and steel carpark. Just like an ICE fire has never trashed a car carrying ship before, or even really damaged one, but the presence of EV on board destroyed several ships in last few years, they were twisted wrecks due to intense heat of battery fires.

Wait till building insurance policies skyrocket in price because of EV's. Maybe that's when people will realise how much of an impact EV's have on their life even if they don't own one.

Yes, I know, it is too dangerous.
EV's go up in flames when you charge them sometimes.
It's a shame some people don't understand how a normal fire works :-
1 You need a combustible material.
2 You need an ignition source.
3 You need oxygen.
Now without all 3 no fire will happen.
This is not the case with an EV fire as the lithium batteries produce their own oxygen during thermal run away which can happen when there is a short between one or more of the cells or by overheating during changing.
As for petrol stations being underground all of them have a water fire suppression system which works on fuel/vehicle fires.
In several nations there WERE fueling stations in the car parks and underground garages in big cities in the 20s and 30s.
There were fires and that practice was regulated further and further through the decades. I don't know if any still exist....
However at one time the idea of storing hundreds of gallons, thousands of litres, along with a hundred filled automobiles, machinery or trucks seemed like an acceptable risk.

It's very simple to cure, ask Mr De Rango for an assurance that if the minimum measures he is recommending are to be use as the standard that he his also willing to be prosecuted in the courts for all the damage, injury and deaths that could reasonably have been prevented by an increased level of protection and preparation. The government's do not expect us all to drive EVs. No personal mobility for the subjects.
No, they want us to either pay through the nose for ICE, suffer an ev (sev) or just walk.
Bicycles for us higher end serfs and our cities and towns are going to be cordoned off into 15-minute sections of suburbs for the others - the walkers. Just can't wait.
The government run buses are going to be a delight to get around in too, perhaps Papa government will take us to the beach or a picnic spot once a year in buses....we can but hope....lol.

I do not know about Australia but here in the US is something I have witnessed. At the EV changing station 3 miles from my home I see EV drivers sitting in their EVs while it is charging without a thought as to the electrical wattage flowing into their cars. These stations are located at a gas station with 24 gas pumps out front and fifty feet from the underground gasoline storage tanks with refueling trucks parked over the top of the storage tanks. I do not care what the so called experts say this is a time bomb waiting to ignite.
If the general public were aware of the precautions and inspections undertaken by Power workers in maintaining HV infrastructure they may change their attitude.
I agree 100%. That is where safety measures and regulations should be taken from.
The "armchair experts" who say that this type of fire isn't a problem should be required to participate in a hands-on field trip with a fire fighting crew before they are allowed to write and publish their articles. The firefighters can provide these so-called experts with all of the equipment and support needed while they fight a little car fire and show the firefighters how its done; assuming that they don't run away crying of course :-).
The average EV is getting older, therefore the fire risk is increasing. The faster charging, the lower charge efficiency and more heat produced.
There is no way in H E double hockey sticks that a sprinkler system is going to contain an EV battery ignition. The only way that things are going to change is for something really bad happening, that we all hope will not happen. The idiots are running the show, and they will continue on with this insanity until a catastrophic event, and even then they will cover it up.

Having spent 25 years in the fire protection and fire detection industry and having considerable interface with NSW Fire and Rescue (as it is now known) I have to agree with them whole heartedly. As far as reading any report put out by ARAP I would suggest that another indepent opinion be sort out.
In recent days there has been a lot of commentary on the current state of the electricity system in Australia. As we have dwindling supplies of electricity and "water batteries" quite likely will never to eventuate, where is all this power going to come from to charge these idealogical loads of rubbish that have no useful purpose? Solar does not work at night, wind is usually not blowing at night and the "water battery" is being replenished at night (at enormous cost and power consumption) and the majority of EVs are going to be charged at night so again where is all this power coming from? Perhaps we can all forgo our cooking, heating, cooling and lighting so that virtue seeking idealogs can charge their very expensive toys to get to the cafe for their soy latte's as that is about as far as EVs can go on a charge!!

Tesla has just been sued by the state for heavily polluting the environment in California on at least 119 occasions since the year 2021 without taking any action...they have also had repeated fires in their paint shop that have poisoned the environment for their neighbors and nearby residents. .. :-) Environmental cars 🙂

If I paid the exuberant price difference of an EV over an ICE, I might be reluctant to admit my mistake. Especially given all the other reasons.

In the UK (as of 20th May 2024) the UK fuel duty is 52.2p per litre on petrol and 50.65p per litre for diesel, and then there's a further 20% VAT added to the pump price. If they succeed in forcing everybody into EVs where is that revenue stream going to come from? They'll start adding 'fuel duty' to electricity.
That will be easy 'at the pump' as it were, adding the fuel duty to public charging stations but what about the people fortunate enough to be able to 'fuel' at home? I can't see ANY government allowing that to happen un-taxed, and as a home charger is supplied through the main fuse box (hence meter) they will be claiming that 'fuel duty' on every piece of electrical equipment you have in your homes. So if you use lighting? Fuel duty! Electric fires or stoves? Fuel duty! Charge your phone? Fuel duty!, Use your computer? Fuel duty! Watch TV? Fuel duty!
Basically, use ANY electricity in your own home and you will be charged fuel duty on it.
Is it any wonder why these governments are pushing for total EV transportation against all forms of common sense?

A factor in this that we don't pay enough attention to. I had a terrible time yesterday traveling to a meeting in Bedfordshire from South London in the rain. The traffic congestion was so awful that I got about halfway, gave up, and returned home. I wasted a total of 6 hours getting nowhere. I remarked to myself that EVs could not come quick enough as this would radically reduce the number of cars on the road, thus enabling me to get to my destination in a fraction of the time. I don't care how much my business meetings cost my company to attend as this is tax-deductible, but I do care about my blood pressure. EVs are a great way of keeping the Great Unwashed off the road and either on public transport or at home restricted to their 15-minute glorified prison cells watching BBC propaganda. Meanwhile, business people, corporate and public sector employees get to do what they please when and where they are pleased to do it. If I start to think this way after 6 hours of wasted time then it is hardly surprising that so many relatively wealthy people love the idea of EVs and the prohibitively expensive road pricing that will inevitably go with them.
Therefore EV ownership and adoption is not a symptom of collectivist care for our fellow man, but a purely selfish act motivated by perceived self-interest. Neatly allied with a lethal combination of virtue-signaling materialism and traditional oneupmanship. Who cares if a few families get cremated alive every hour? Who cares if most of the plebs are stranded within walking distance of their own hovels for the entirety of their miserable lives? Who cares about the inevitable environmental degradation caused by making countless millions of cars disposable products? Who cares about the mass unemployment caused within our entire motoring industry. Who cares about food becoming far more expensive, to the point of most of the Plebs surviving on powered cockroaches?
Who cares about these things as long as people like me and our entire corporate and political class can arrive at our meetings on time?
My generation had great fun, to say the least. Now it is time for us to make everybody else's life a total misery, and the best way to do this is to convince younger generations that we are doing them a great favour. We may have been spoiled shitless and stoned most of the time back in the 70s, but we turned out not to be so stupid after all.
One of the greatest ironies of life is this. Call it Darwinist survival of the smartest or fittest, God's natural law in operation, or just, how it is and has always been, as what we call it is of little consequence. Young people seem programmed to commit suicide or are extremely easy to persuade to do so. We have countless examples of this, young male soldiers being the most obvious, but young females are also so inclined. This is ironic as it is clearly the young that have the most to lose by destroying their own lives so easily and early. Perhaps nature's way of keeping the species both alive and adaptable? Thus preventing real IQ levels from dropping at an exponential and existential rate.
Believing what you are told to believe, or doing as you are told to do, traditionally gets you dead at a tragically early age. The good news is that dead people tend not to breed, while stupid people are incapable of working out how to do so without starving to death or being regularly culled.
Therefore sod humanity. I will buy an EV at some time in the future and by that time I will be able to get to my meetings without going half insane.

As everyone is aware, the infamous Luton Airport Carpark fire blaze was caused by a HYBRID, not pure EV LOL. There is an NHS hospital which banned EV explicitly from its car parks.

The risk of an EV fire is pretty high. The number that exist so far is what is low; it is the only reason you don't see EV fires every day in Oz like you do in China. Telsa is the only EV maker that has models with a cooling system inside the battery packs. Chinese brands depend on air cooling. However and EV can catch fire just sitting doing nothing. Example the Falicty Ace car go ship - a new Porsche EV caught fire; spreading quickly to other EVs and then sinking the ship. EVs can self ignite due to dendrites that can grow withing the battery cells causing a short - even when they are new and doing nothing. EV chain fires are massive risks not worth taking.

Our son was in the Austin hospital last year, the underground car park is partially under parts of the hospital. Can you imagine an EV fire in this car park, with toxic fumes billowing into the hospital? The lift wells are central to the car park. Ban all EVs from these facilities as a matter of safety.

EV fires are pretty rare - at least in new, well-maintained vehicles. As pointed by another commenter, nobody really knows what will happen when you have a larger number of damaged third-hand EV's driven as first cars after getting a licence.... However, *when* EV's burn, they are 2 - 2.5 x hotter than ICEV fires, and have the potential to reignite for 24-48 hours after they are first extinguished. In most risk management processes, a low probability (unlikely) adverse event with catastrophic consequences is classified as an extreme risk - which thus requires careful planning to mitigate or manage.
Not so rare, and we have reports of EVs catching fire aboard transport ships on the way to be sold, brand new, off the factory floor, they are dangerous and UNNECESSARY, and we DO KNOW what will happen as the car and batteries decay and are out in the weather.
We don't need such dangerous, badly built EVs in our cities and towns. There is reason for this mess because there is NO catastrophic end coming to the world just because we drive normal cars and use the fuels available today. We have politicians willing to cash in on bringing shit-built items from the immoral and unethical CCP, EVs are so badly built in China that they are falling to pieces within weeks.
Unscrupulous socialist and green governments, bent on forcing the normal market system, will try to get them into our country. We will then be left with these pieces of rotting and dangerous trash littered all over the place. It will turn our country into a mine field, and no one responsible will pay the price, a few will make big money.
Just the fact that the general public is allowed to connect and disconnect and use cables that carry upwards of 150,000 watts is mind boggling! I can't think of a single thing that could go wrong.... LOL
The point here is that if construction goes ahead and ignores fire service advice, then the insurers will refuse to cover the risks as laid out by the fire service. It is insurance that will put an end to this madness, because they are major international companies run by shareholders with an eye to the bottom line. This is only my opinion of course, albeit based upon a 40 year career in insurance.
The insurance premiums are already having an effect on EV ownership. One of the reasons I would not get one at the moment on top of the uncontrollable fireworks potential even though a home charged one would suit me down to the ground for 90% of my driving.

Some time back I did an online search for any state laws enacted, or pending, that would regulate or ban EV charging in multi-family buildings in the state of California. All that I found were new requirements for the builders of apartment complexes to install public charging stations somewhere within the parking area of the complex. It would seem this state's government is so enamored with the idea of all electric transportation that it has never occurred to them that charging within a closed space, not to mention a space that shares a wall with another residence, a family with children perhaps, could ever be dangerous.
I'm a fireman, the reason i came to your channel at first was due to my encounter with an EV forklift fire.
The only solution was to get another forklift to get the battery out and bury it, as no amount of water would extinguish it and it would just keep boiling the water away.
And how many of these EV fires have you seen in your job?
We've all seen the intensity of an EV fire. No sprinkler system will stop those Flames. At best you might minimize the spread but imagine those Flames reaching the ceiling of your garage and what would the sprinkler system do to prevent that!

Simon have you covered the Otay Mesa energy storage battery fire in California? They've been fighting it for 7 days and the fire department is stating it could take up to a month to put it out.

IN a covered carpark you can at least have sprintlers that prevent the fire from spreeding. Of cause, yes the car will burn out, and the care around it will be unusable. But cars that is not right nexto it will only be wet.

The funny thing is when E scooters and bikes first became popular people had concerns of their safety after a couple of house fires started by them. Some how parking a car with a battery a 100 times bigger in your garage or the like is fine though.
Staying in Streathham Hill, in London, last year we had to dodge 3 or 4 of those EV cable protectors on the footpath walking the 300 metres down to the High street. They where a real trip hazard, especially at night, even though they were a bright yellow.

An ice fire is a birthday candle compared to the 1000lb underwater flare that is a EV battery fire.
