Pete when it comes to a new client I get paid a 50% deposit to secure the date and if they cancel they do not get the deposit back✌️. I also put my prices up this year.
Best of luck for the season.
Damien from Cork City
Wise words Damien I’m thinking of making similar changes to the business this year mate
I’ve had this situation on and off in 6 years but I’m just getting fed up with people being late as it impacts on bills etc
Have a great rest of the week mate
I've not watched all of this video as yet but I can tell you this,I had 3 late payers. The stress and hassle it caused me was super stressful. The job is hard enough not to hassle with people like this. I got rid of two and even though they were well priced jobs I almost immediately replaced them a few days after and the best thing have done all year. The 3rd one is also out the door as soon as I get my money. Trust me,it's not worth the headaches.Get customers that value you.
Really great comment this thank you and I completely agree
This is part of the reason we went self employed and not to be messed around
Have a great evening 💚🙌🏼
That’s the answer, customers that Value you 👏
I think exactly the same and it’s unbearably annoying. If I feel stressed by late payers I first get the money and then before the next visit raise the price . I consider the price increase as an admin fee for the hassle of chasing them for late payment . Good sound advise anyway 👍
Hi pablo really like your way of thinking mate
That’s something to consider for the future for me
Have a great weekend bud 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I've implemented a 7-day payment policy for all my customers. This also applies to some of my commercial customers. If they don't pay knocking on the door works well. Then you tell them a load of waste will be dropped where I got it from until you pay or the balance is settled. You have to know when to get your whip out.
Cash flow is so important, I'm learning this the hard way aha.
Hope you have a great week pete.
The wip that’s a new one 😂 but I get what you mean mate
Thanks for chatting on the phone yesterday mate have a great rest of the week to ☺️💪🏼
Well done on 1k subscribers mate you are flying bro I’m so so impressed
Keep going dude 💚💪🏼
I was at a customers house doing their garden. I spent the whole day there. At the end of the day, I spoke to the customer and said I was leaving. Inside her house, was a physiotherapist. He was leaving too. The physiotherapist was paid £100 in front of me because he was leaving. I asked for payment and she said she would sort it out later....My payment came 5 days later.
Is it something to do with tradeworkers that customers think they don't have to pay on the day? Why is it that people such as physiotherapists, reflexologists, etc, get paid when they have carried out the service but tradeworkers dont?
It’s rude and frustrating Kai I’ve experienced similar many times I just can’t stand it one of the most frustrating parts about being self employed
I have one client that is a late payer. I bombard him with emails texts and invoice reminders. He eventually pays. Cash flow is king.
On the flip side I have a couple of clients that will pay literally a minute after I’ve sent an invoice.
You are probably better off with the new clients that are going to come your way and ditch bad payers.
I agree soon as I’ve met these new clients and they are happy with what I have to offer then I’ll be letting go of the bad payers
Have a great day mate
Never had my own business but learnt years ago there is no such thing as loyalty in the Workplace, think about yourself and your business.
Wise words Paul you could well have a business mate
What do you do for work mate

New plan for this year
Each new client I take on needs to be next to the pub, I am off to great start this year.
I really hope our clients are not watching us on youtube 🤣
that is right mate it is the "scrap the crap" again i had one few years back now i was doing lawn for must have been close to 3 month of payment due i had been working for year or so before this always paid but then i was chasing them up and the bill was something like £300 they then said we need to talk about this price and renegotiate this price so i said ok this will need an extra £100 as you've made me wait they paid then asked for the next bit gave them the price they asked when i would be starting i said as soon as you pay up front they were not willing to pay up front i still dont think the work has been done who wants those hedges lol. hope your health is good also mate i am just catching up on videos all the best
Hi Shane thanks for the comment mate nothing worse than being owed that much money it’s really not ok
These types won’t ever keep gardeners
In these cases I charge interest on out sanding invoices which the terms are in my invoice
100% and why not
There will be some people who encore bank charges for going overdrawn when they wouldn’t have gone overdrawn had they been paid on time
So this policy is a great idea and in my mind fair
Mate they are a pain in the ass and it’s a really tricky one but your right you have to do what’s best for you and your business
Everyone will go through this at somepoint during their careers
I get the money and let them go
Hope you get a few of these new clients soon that would help you replace the bad ones
Great topic bud
Thanks mate yeah it’s just such a pain and we tolerate it for awhile but then it gets too much and you just think I’m not putting up with this
Thanks for watching hope you have a great rest of the week 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I work with a lot of estate agents and every single one of them are late payers …. Some of them don’t pay me for week I keep pestering them as I think their going to forget 😂
I wouldn’t work for estate agents for that reason they only care about selling homes less about our businesses
I'm lucky with my customers 99% pay me same day. I've had a few late payers and they either start paying on time or they find another gardener.
That’s really good Robert and I think long term that will be a policy I have to adopt into my business
Have a great day mate
Trade is treated different from retail, shouldn't be , but customers seem to think its OK to pay later
Drives you mad doesn’t it
It’s not all but you always get a select few and ultimately serial offenders get replaced
Have a great evening David 🙌🏼
Great video mate
Thanks Adam hope your keeping well mate
That's like same amount did to us here in Oklahoma on the electric hmm?
It’s going up everywhere mate
Mate, jobber was was the best thing I ever signed up for, save a card on file and take automatic payments as soon as you've left the property, no more waiting around for them to pay
I really need to look into something like this it would sort so many issues
Thanks for sharing Jordan 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Nothing worse than chasing customers for payment! We've done the work pay up simple.... roll on the dry weather 😀🌿☀️
Hi Jake agree when you do ask you get made to feel guilty for asking just madness
Roll on spring indeed
Have a great evening mate 😎☀️
@THETATTOOGARDENER83 You too mate👍
Late paying is totally unacceptable, shows a total lack of respect. Get the owed money in your account then tell them its cash on completion of job in future or bin them off
I’ll be binning them off once I’ve been paid mate my patience has been pushed to the limit as it’s not the first time they’ve been later paying
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 don't blame you mate, do what you feel is right. Beauty of running our own business we get to decide who we work for, and who we don't!
I make it clear on the quotes I provide to new customers that payment is due at the end of the job, either in cash or through a card reader that I always carry with me. This helps avoid any potential issues like, "I'll transfer the money later, just send me the details." For commercial jobs, payment terms may vary, typically within 30 days, so there is another talk...
I think that’s a good way of doing it mate
Most of mine are in the bank so a card reader could be a great option
And yep I always get the odd few who want to pay later then it’s almost week later 😩
Nice one Pete
Cheers Mike
Robbing Peter to pay Paul, and they do walk Into Tesco and pay later it's called a credit card
Very true indeed Aaron 🙌🏼
This does my head all the time. I’ve always put on my invoice that has to be paid within 7 days of invoice date but after talking to few people that also self employed they put on there’s that payment should be made within 24 hrs of receiving the invoice. Just make sure it’s in bigger bold text on the invoice. This is what I’m going to start doing as I was waiting on almost 2k till today when two of my bigger invoices were paid today.
Yes this did have a big impact on me and at home as couldn’t do things at the weekend or even buy parts for servicing/repairs to my machinery.
I know mate and also if you have a bill due and they haven’t paid there’s always a risk you might not be able to pay it or go overdrawn paying it then of course bank charges etc
There’s always a knock on affect for us in one way or another
In my early days ie first year if I didn’t get paid straight away I use to sometimes not have enough money for the van meaning until people paid up I couldn’t work or fill Jerry cans
So for any new gardeners starting out this is a real bigger problem than it should be
Thanks for watching Carl
hello was mostly a Gardener in A gardening and caravan centre for years, last few years have been a full time carer for my mam
Bless mate your a good man
we had to ditch one of our best customers, well they were, until payments started to slip, eventually it cost us too much in loss of work, worst thing is they had a lovely time in Dubai, had decorators round. bloody ball ache when people pay late
Mate I’ve got one like this they said they couldn’t afford me so can we hold off as moneys tight
I do the neighbours house too we drove past each week and saw tradesman working in the house etc every week so decided to drop them
They did ask if I’d come back and I said I had filled their space
Hope your keeping well reas
Great topic x I have 1 client who is currently in a bad financial situation and is paying with part payments. I'm very accommodative but I don't like the proposes that have not be kept (paying on time when you promised after further negotiations).
That’s great that your understanding
I think we can be of client communicate with us but when your ignored it’s really hard to work out how to move forward
Thanks for the comment 🙌🏼🙌🏼
It's annoying isn't it, because I like to be neat and orderly. And when it's me I'll always pay bills immediately, I'm fortunate that I can but yeah. I have one customer that is lovely, and also a lovely big garden and never any fuss really but always late paying, months and months later although I send reminders, thing is eventually they always pay but it does disturb me the time I have to wait. I persevere because (when they pay) it IS a good payer and the garden is large and nice and convenient but yeah so annoying.
Making you wait that long Neil isn’t fair I can tell you work hard because I know how hard we work and it’s the same for all tradesman
I couldn’t afford to wait that long we always need fuel or tools or to fix something just because the amount of use things get
Others have suggested late payment fees etc might be worth thinking about mate
Have a great day mate
@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Thanks Pete mate for the nice words. It's about getting organised and getting smarter I guess.. I've collated the outstanding ones this time instead of sending another bill for a given month I've sent a revamped bill inclusive of all the outstanding ones in one place for simplicity sake, incl this month (Feb) so there's no excuse.. Next visit is in two weeks and I've named the terms as 14 days to pay this one big bill, basically instead of being arsey with them, I'll only attend the garden again once I'm paid upto date.
The vast majority of my clients pay on the the day or soon after. A few sometimes take a week or two if they forget/are on holiday. I don't stress about it as I know they will all pay up. No way would I ditch a good job for a payment that's a few days late.
Hi jack I’ve got a few similar and I don’t mind if I know the pattern it’s more the really bad ones who never reply to messages and always pay late every time luckily it’s none of my big clients
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83ah ok, at worst I quick follow up text if payment doesn't arrive in reasonable time, this usually does the trick for me. Instant payment and a apology text follows swiftly!
If it annoys you though then it's obviously an issue so it's best they are replaced. Have a good week 👍
I make sure my terms are on the quote and invoice so there’s no confusion. If I’m not paid I send a gentle reminder, if still not paid I contact them to say I won’t be doing any further work until the debt is cleared. If still not paid I mention small claims court which normally jolts them into paying then I end the agreement and move on. Works for me 🧀
I think all of what you just said is more than fair it’s really nice to get other peoples take on how they deal with this situation
Have a great evening and keep up the great work
I totally understand this, I’m lucky most of my customers are very good. I have had a few in the past that I’ve had to keep chasing for payments.
Hope you get payment eventually mate👍
Cheers mark I don’t have many 90% are great just one or two that can be a real pain but they’ll be replaced soon as I’ve received payment and got others lined up
Great content Pete..We have term and conditions on our invoice which state payment terms and penalties for late payment ! Also at quotation the terms of payment are clearly pointed out including penalties ! Most utilities credit cards bank payments they charge for late payment and so are we entitled to the same.Another shift in Australia is payment ahead of service similar to subscriptions not that I have tried this but getting popular . Price rises as you say are so important we do yearly and customers are advised when we quote that annual rises will be applied . Its easy to get busy and forget about the most important thing ..Money ,keeps food on the table .
Thanks for a great topic Pete !
Thank you for sharing your wise words
It’s really nice to get other peoples perspectives and also just see how you guys do business and deal with such situations
I think moving forward, I will try and do an increase each year, even if it’s just minimally so that you don’t scare any clients away
We’re hoping to have some of your Aussie sunshine very soon 😂😎☀️🙏 we’re getting bored of the Wind and rain here in the uk
Thank you for watching. Have a fantastic day. 🙌🏼
Late payers!! I have one, they do pay and surprisingly the money seems to come in at a needed time...ur points are all well taken.possibly ur frustration will reach boiling point..dont make hasty decision...good topic..
Hi Dan yeah I thinks it’s close to that I felt I had to talk about it today and to get other peoples situations and experiences in this comments section
It’s great to hear I’m not the only one but it’s not ok that so many people are having to deal with this
I think the changes will be made soon I just need to finalise a few things with some new clients then I can do what I’ve got to do
Thanks for watching mate
I get them to pay before I leave. It seems to work
I think I’ll do this someone suggest a card reader or cash on completion of the visit
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 😍 a card reader is an amazing idea, then nobody can complain about not having cash or whatever
Paid upfront via bank transfer on a one off job from someone who i dont know or isnt a current customers friend. (They dont know me i dont know them- if i didnt turn up for instance they could get a bank charge back) If its a normal £50 a fortnight visit etc im happy to be paid after the jobs done because i can lose 50 quid annoying as it is, if they decide not to pay. And i dont accept cheques
Thanks for the comment mate I do accept cheques only because I can pay them in on my banking app and it normally clears next day
I’ve not had any issues with it
Hello Pete,
Most of my customers pay me when I have finished for the day working in their yard. I usually call in 10 days to 2 weeks to remind my customers, and or ask them if they sent their check to me ye? Usually calling or sending a text works as a reminder. I did drop one person years ago for making me chase my pay for more than 2 times.
I hope some of these new yards you will be picking up the owners will treat you well.
Hi Nancy yeah keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out
Thanks for sharing your experiences ☺️🙌🏼
Your welcome, thank you for listening. You are about the only person I have had to share my business tips . March 10, 2024 will be my 26th year of having my gardening business.@@THETATTOOGARDENER83
A caretaker where I used to work (old and wise been at it forever) used to say "don't be the best tradesman, be the best PAID tradesman"
Very wise words indeed sometimes easier said then done with some people tho
card on file for new customers , if they want your service ,to get them on the rota they need to imput card on file, will need jobber or CRM, , put the 2percente in the price , all business run on cash flow ,once invoice is sent 2 days later automatically charge the card .
Cash flow is vital for any small business to survive
This is a big reason why so many smaller companies don’t get past a few years
I invoice all my regular customers at the end of the month. I give everyone 7 days to pay, then send a reminder . If there is no payment, then no further work , it seems to work. I state clearly on all invoices that payment terms are strictly 7 days. No
non-payers yet! !
Hi Steve thanks for the comment I love to hear how different company’s operate it’s nice to see things handled from different prospectives
Have a great rest of the week ☺️
The old supermarket saying 😅 honestly tho it's a pain but it's part of any business I think. The ones we have to chase continually end up on different payment terms or we give them up unfortunately
Hi Nathan agree I think your right they will either have to go cash on the day or replaced
It’s not easy but we’ve got to make the right call and do what’s best for us
Thanks for watching bud 🙌🏼😎
Then it gets awkward when you're due for the next visit and they still haven't paid for the previous one. For me, that's a phone call rather than a text, with a polite attitude but firm enough to make it clear to the client that they are behind on payment. Some clients I trust more than others... I have done second visits and then been owed for two, but paid in the end.
I have one client who pays me early lol! He hands me the cash as soon as I rock up... If only everyone was like that!
Exactly this it does get awkward and it shouldn’t be considering we’ve done the hours
Wouldn’t it be lovely if they all paid cash on arrival 😂
Thanks for the comment William
It’s a pain but sometimes it happens, all you can do is wait a week and send a reminder and hopefully get paid, if it’s a common occurrence then my advice is to say bye bye 👋 once you’ve been paid of course.
I also make it very clear from the beginning by saying prompt payment please.
Fortunately I don’t have any problems with my customers but that’s because I ironed the bad ones out.
Peace ☮️ dude
I could go on forever about this subject 😂🤯
Bloody lucky to have you in their gardens with the work you turn out that deserves to be paid for instantly.
Mark brilliant comment mate great advice and appreciate the kind words
I’ve got a few bad ones but not all bad just one or two really they just repeatedly don’t pay straight away or need reminding 2-3 times before anything gets done
Thanks for watching buddy and have a great rest of the week
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 thanks Pete and hope you’re feeling better buddy.

Very frustrating mate. I’ve found mentioning payment to there partner. If they have friends around ask in front of them. Had do that a couple of times. Works though.
Good shout it almost embarrasses them infront of the rich friends and 9 times out of 10 it’s the people who are in a better financial situation that pay late
Then the nhs nurse or the old lady pay straight away
Cheers for watching Sam 🙌🏼
It can be very annoying, to be owed money for work you’ve done. I had one customer who thought he had 90 days to pay after the invoice date. Once he paid I dropped it. Not worth the hassle buddy.
90 days omg 🤦🏻♂️ mad what customers think isn’t it definitely not worth the agro
Cash on completion, or I don't take on the job.
I think at the start you give everyone the benefit of a doubt
But when you get bad paying customers, it throws that element of doubt into your mind, so when you take on new clients, you end up, going down the route you’ve suggested which is cash on completion
you did exactley what i do let them awkward ones go what goes around trys to come back around
Hi Russell it sure does eventually anyway mate
