Hi Mate. My old combo that I have now had 3 barrels and keys bloody nightmare. Now my van will only start once in the day and the rest of the day like yesterday and today. I have to keep it running while I am in customers gardens. I was quoted by Vauxhall hundreds and hundreds of pounds so I went to a smaller company and they fixed it. I wish I could help you financially but I am skint as it is. Hopefully the AA will help you or recommend a good garage to fix your ignition barrel. Hope you both will be ok especially before Christmas. Look after yourselfs. Merry Christmas.

I'll give you a different perspective. I run a burial ground for a Parish Council. We have a guy who does a mow blow and go for a fixed price per visit. He's done a great job for years and I guess for him it's a bit of a cash cow - we always pay within a few days and never quibble. However, because of the super complicated nature of public finances and legal nonsense, we are now forced by audit rules to make sure we have a ton of paperwork in place so recently we had to go down the public tender route. Sadly, the big companies were not interested because it was too small a job and the little guys had no interest because the paperwork was too complex so we got no interest. Eventually I had to jump through all sorts of bureaucratic hoops just to get the job done exactly like it has been for years by our same guy. Utter madness but thats how it works. Ironically all that extra cost is picked up by the Council Tax payer when its all pointless - very frustrating. Just thought I'd let you see the other side :-)

@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Aye thanks. I'm extending our burial ground to create more grave space and this time of year is ideal to get the ground turned over ready for seeding in the Spring. I won't tell you about the Environment Agency forms (and their fees!), the Forestry Commission forms, the public consultations, the Government grant applications etc etc.The irony is we've been burying people since 1913 and none of the mattered before. At least the occupants don't complain :-)

Mulching is another to add. Once borders are tidied up makes them look even smarter and helps early bulbs and coloured stems stand out more, and mulch will keep them weed free longer. empty customers well rotted compost heap if they have one (build one if they don’t) and or bring green waste, mushroom compost or compost bark which if often most cost effective delivered in bulk bags or even cheaper if you can pick it up loose in trailer or if you got a tipper. Or even delivered loose if you need multiple cubic meters. I pick work depending on weather pruning can often still be done when it wet as won’t make too mess If dry day get the border work and mulching done. Can Spilt and divide perennials plant bare root/root ball hedges, shrubs, trees and roses. And leave the pressure washing till you done the mulching. Like other mention Fencing repairs if you need the work. Gradually get rid of job that stop you going in winter and look after the customer that do keep you on all year round. I don’t do commercial jobs but think you find they are mostly priced base on a yearly amount taking in to account reduced hours or visits in winter but they will split yearly amount to 12 equal payments so like everyone they can pay their bills in the winter. From my experience the only limiting factors in the winter are the day light hours and the weather to a point and/or motivation to work when it’s dark cold and wet 😂

@ I do that too mate. I don’t take any garden waste away front any of my main clients as they all have room for compost areas and in most a cases bonfire 🔥 (a favorite winter job when it’s dry and frosty) which might controversial but if you have the space and are considerate of wind direct and the neighbours it’s still great way of getting rid of waste particularly any material that might carry disease which you don’t wanna chip and or compost. I try to used council garden waste bins if customers have them even on very very large properties it’s still worth it just to put ground elder/bine weed and nasty stuff other stuff I don’t want to burn chip or compost. The council compost are heated to a high enough temp to sterilize and kill off even the nasty stuff than a garden compost won’t.

@@jamesholloway5855 Yes mate it's okay to prune fig trees in January and February. In fact, late autumn or early winter is the best time to prune fig trees because they are dormant and have less latex in their branches. Pruning at this time gives the tree time to recover before the growing season starts again.

Patio cleaning in the winter? 😅 The algae will be back by the time it's spring, what a waste of money, not many people are going to be booking that in. Councils are all short of cash, they have all cut down how often they cut grass, even in the summer. They're leaving verges and some parkland to grow for 'wildlife'. They're not going to be giving our gardening work over winter, they like it that it doesn't need doing and they can save £££

I’ve just taken on a few sites with a housing association and they’ve got plenty more sites across the South East east so there is work and they are taking people The biggest problem is people don’t ask because they expect to be rejected I’ve got a few jet washing jobs to do in January and to be honest most of them get done end of February anyway normally so it’s only like five or six weeks before spring so there’s no way algae is gonna come back in that time Equally I don’t want to be patio cleaning when the growing seasons getting going I think if you can get on top of the gardens the patio’s and the beds borders and all of that before the growing season starts then you’ve got a head on everyone else equally you’re earning money whilst other people are just sitting at home going what am I gonna do? Some people have their patio done every year some people have it done every two years a lot of jobs on doing in January and February will be starting been done for a couple years so they’re gonna be fine

    • @waynelewis5656

@THETATTOOGARDENER83 housing associations are different to councils. HA's charge their residents for ground maintenance, so they need it done. Councils don't, they are reducing grass and hedge cutting to save money, no point phoning them to ask for work over the winter.

Most people don't care about their gardens over the winter. It's wet and cold and flowers aren't growing, most people don't want to pay for a gardener this time of year. You may as well get a temporary seasonal job at Argos or Tesco or Aldi etc. They're always taking on people over December.

@@waynelewis5656 your spot on mate they don’t but there’s always jobs that can be done I try to have aleast 5 big jobs through the season so that if the small ones tail off then I’ve still got enough to keep me ticking over This is just me personally but I’d do anything work wise to not have to work in one of them places and it’s purely because I can’t work for someone else giving me orders and telling me what to do or when I can have lunch or go to the toilet etc it’s too much like dictatorship I’d rather find some one off jobs if I can you only need two or three and you can earn decent enough money from them to keep you going But everyone’s situation is different and it’s totally cool if people do go and do them jobs you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do just not for me I think it’s purely because I spent 20 years working in hell holes like that so when I went self employed I said to myself I’d never take a step backwards I will always push myself to try and find money off my own back etc especially when there’s so much gardening work that can still be done. Another great video. Only thing I’ll say about doing council/housing association ground maintenance is that you will need a minimum of 10 million worth of public liability insurance and most them are done under a tender system for the contracts and they will be a minimum of a year. Good idea to go for them tho just need the cash to put into them to get the contracts

From next year going forward, when people want their grass cut weekly/ fortnightly/ monthly, im going to give them a price based on 9 months a year march until the start of december. Im tired of customers asking you to start in may when the grass is a foot long and then drop you in October when its still growing.

Really informative video Pete. Some of my current garden maintenance customers have asked me if i can clean the gutters. Some of them have bungalows so easy to do but others are higher so invested in bigger ladders. One customer asked if i would clean their windows on a daily basis! Also invested in a petrol pressure washer and a 1000 litre ibc in case the customer has no outside tap.

In my third year now I have decided to narrow my scope of work for winter. In late summer I bought a chipper/shredder for £550 called a greenmaster. When working for the council I was trained as a tree surgeon as well so now with the shredder/ chipper I focus on using it for my garden tidy ups and small tree. work. Then I posted the work on the community page. I booked up a couple of jobs. Now heading forward I am looking to buy the eliet prof 6 trailer. A lot of money but the time saved with shredding all the hedge and pruning shrubs will save money in time plus booking medium size trees. All chips will be reused in my customer's gardens or for community groups. Also just bought a cobra moss brush for the moss on paths and drives. I feel this might be a big change in the market and a lot of people I have booked in said they are fed up re sanding the drive after a pressure wash.

Hi Robert that’s a good option as there’s loads of winter storms and trees that need attention and also having the chipper/shredder is a great idea If money wasn’t an issue then I’d have a big trailer chipper it would be amazing There’s great money in that line of work I think your wise taking on those types of jobs £££ Have a good rest of the week bud
