  • Can a running shoe that is 100% recyclable and based on being sustainable and environmentally friendly be any good when it comes to performance? Salomon think so!
    They’ve launched the brand new Index 0.1 - the result of 3 years research and development at Salomon’s Annecy design centre in the French Alps - with the whole concept of the shoe based on circular life cycle principles.
    Andy’s been taking a first-look at them and putting them through their paces to see if they’re any good. Watch now to find out his thoughts.

    It's literally baby steps in the right direction. I would love to be able to buy such shoes but I have wide feet and use the Brooks 2E width fitting. I know from previous fitting visits that nothing else comes close. I am already massively limited in my choice.
    What is needed is for all running shoes to be recyclable and even better, all running shoes and clothing to me made out of recycled materials. It's the elephant in the room where running is concerned - the huge amount of man-made materials in our clothing and shoes. The whole industry needs to step up and up their game on this.

    I usually have 3 pairs of running shoes on rotation and they will wear out in about 6 months +/-. It will definitely be a plus for me if I know the shoes that I am purchasing are 100% recyclable.

    I would like to try these shoes. Black would be a better colour; being white they will need regular cleaning! But 100% recyclable running shoes must be the future. I imagine that millions of running shoes are discarded every year.

    I think all the running shoe makers (heck, even all clothing/shoe manufacturers) should be required to provide a recycling scheme. I struggle to find places I can recycle my old running shoes. I will definitely look into the Salomon shoe for my next pair. Thanks for the review.

    I love the idea and this could be the start of something great, but its still very early. My main concern would be the tread on the bottom of the shoe. I can see myself sliding around in them in the winter and I don't think they'd do too well for trail running - not just because they're white :D

    It's a great idea though, hopefully more companies will follow suit. It would be interesting to hear a follow-up verdict on these shoes after say 100 miles... You can't really get a proper feel on a short run (as they do when you get to try them on treadmill in the shop, or at least I can't anyway!).

    -I love anytime a company reduces the wasteful packaging and/or recycles materials. -I don’t think this shoe is for me; I need cushioning.
    -I love the lack of crazy colors on the shoe: really hate bright fluorescents, purple and orange combined, or even a green added to a navy blue as it limits what will go with it.
    -Didn’t catch the price. That can always shut down whether or not I can purchase it because I’m responsible for an entire family of 6.
    -What’s the expected average mileage for these?

  • @williammorris7895

    That's a really interesting concept, thanks for the video. I started googling and discovered the 'Cyclon' project. For US$30 a month you effectively rent recyclable shoes on a subscription basis. For high milage runners, that concept could really change the game. But... you can only change the shoes twice a year, and you have to pay for a minimum of 6 months, so it's effectively like buying a shoe on a finance plan... except you don't get to keep them at the end. I like the idea, but those numbers don't quite work out for me - I think in order for it to be worth doing, you'd need to be able to change the shoes more regularly, so that you get the benefit of always being in fresh shoes. There has to be another benefit of paying $180 (6x$30) for a shoe that you can't keep - as in, either be given the opportunity to change them more often, or lower the price so that the cost is less than simply buying a shoe that you'll get 6months+ out of. When you crunch the numbers, it's not actually a good deal for the customer. Again though, I really like the idea.

    • @runningchannel
      @runningchannel  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching William! And definitely agree, the Cyclon project is a great idea for those runners who are clocking up the miles. Salomon could be an alternative for those who don't want to take out a subscription.

    I do appreciate the idea behind this shoe. A great idea for the future of running, sustainable development and for things made with care.
    But I do not like the way they look, the lack of grip on the sole and especially the brick like midsole. Not in term of stiffness cause I do like a shoe that’s is not soft, but they way the look not rounded at the back
    Great idea, but not for me at this moment. Always first generation things tend to be less refined compared the later models

    One of the things that always bothered me was the amount of waste that goes into making the running shoe! I'm really happy there are more recyclable and sustainable options! (is this one also considered sustainable if its based on circular economy?). I do have a question though, I couldn't tell from the video, but is there are difference in the tread in the toe and heel? Or was that just from running in them? Also is there a particular reason for the choice of the dot tread?

    Not that hard to improve on the recycling of running shoes. But until legislation comes in $come first for these companies. Look at sports clothing, how many are using blue sign approved fabrics and using 100% recycled and recyclable fabrics. If Patagonia can do it these other companies which are much larger and richer can but don’t.

    I like the idea of recyclable running shoes, but this is a mighty high price to pay for a pair of everyday easy paced running shoes. It sounds like a £65 pair of trainers with a £165 price tag on it. As the manufacturers get the shoe back when you have finished with them, thereby getting free materials to reuse, why the heck is there such a massive price add on? I really hope that it's not yet another eco-cash grab from a manufacturer trying to garner green points while craftily pocketing the extra cash.

    • @leebrown3645
      @leebrown3645 3 роки тому

      To be fair, they are way out of my price range anyway, so I don't think that I'm in their target demographic. Buying 2 pairs a year out here in Peru would cost me more than a whole month's salary! I think that if they market them properly and that the quality is there (and with being Salomon, there is no reason to doubt that) they could be a real success. The idea is great, they just have to convince people that the money is well spent. Good luck to them, I say. 👍

    • @nickpellatt
      @nickpellatt 3 роки тому

      100% agree Lee. Absolutely sounds like an eco-grab to me. Feels very hard for me to support this type of program without a huge amount of hard evidence, rather than being sold the idea via glossy advertising (like On).
      Just like cutting out the middle man with Daniel Wellington watches, saving the planet with £4 a pack vegan sausages, these recycling deals scream fraud, millennial money making scams to me.

    Nice idea...but how much energy is used in the recycle? the mailing back, the breaking down of the shoe ie: the recycle machinery uses energy too and then the re manufacture process. Not arguing if they are good shoes just seems like a lot of energy going into the process that can't be recovered.
