- Hey everybody, this is all the gear i finished with✨
More info!
If you want to connect Instagram is a great place! Find me @stella.hikes I try my best to respond to DMs :)
And if you want to support me on the AT and the creation of these videos you can
Venmo @Stella-Blashock
and I’ll send you a post card from the trail!
Massive thank you to those already supporting me on the AT regardless of how- financially, following along, sharing, and commenting! 💗
10% of YT earnings this year will go back to trail orgs like the ATC, PCTC, and the CDTC 🌲🏔️✨ Thank you for your support and encouragement! Let’s get outside and into the mountains together 💞
I usually LOATHE these gear videos and videos portraying the AT as rainbows and unicorns, but you are so cool, inspiring, fun and were so real that I have been obsessively watching your videos for the past 3 days. I live in Maine and hike a lot of miles here and didn't realize until 2018 that Maine isn't "normal" trail miles! I have stage 4 colon cancer and have since 2015 and thought I was out of the woods, so to speak :), until November when it returned. It feels like I should do the trail now before things get bad, if they do, but my job is so awesome and supportive that I don't want to give it up! However, if I get bad news tomorrow, I may be rethinking my plans. Thank you for your honesty and transparency and showing that women rock the trail. Your smile and laughter have made some dark days brighter. Congrats on finishing despite your challenges. You're a rock star for doing so much of it alone. I will end here before you think you have a stalker fan in Maine !
Good morning Stella! It's good to hear from you again. My grandchildren have been asking about you. They told their dad, I'm going to Hike the Appalachian trail someday. I wanna Hike with Stella, she's nice. 😅 You're famous! ;) Enjoy your summer! 🙏
I have an opposite situation....my children in their 30s are urging me in my 60s to thru hike! They want to sit on the couch and watch my vlogs....?!
@@sanman8359😂 that's funny
@@RickINFJ I know…..kids these days…..😎
So nice to see a You Tuber who actually LOVES to hike and wants to share this with the world. You can tell this is your passion and not just a way to make cash (although thrilled if you do, you deserve it).
Stella, you are so lucky you missed the deluge of rain! I know 3 vloggers that have got off trail I. NH, ME and VT. Guess you probably saw Taylor’s video
Could you do a video on your food? Eating on trail as a vegetarian….. how to resupply in gas stations and trail magic and all that!!? 😊❤
Wow. Heavier pack, heavier duty rain gear ( I wouldnt skimp on rain gear either), and still 12.5 lbs. I love these statistical videos. Great to see you Stella and thank you for a very thorough rundown. Take care ✌️ P.S. I'm so glad you kept the intro music! ❤
Just remembered - please consider posting another video with slow step-by-step (screen by screen if possible) instructions on how best to film, edit, and upload daily videos under rough AT-like conditions. Thanks!
Good idea! Thanks San Man!
Love that you weighed everything as you went through it all. I am prepping for my thru hike next year so it's great for comparisons.
Hi Stella, great vid, could you do a more in depth one about your Garmin Inreach Mini please? They're so expensive, and I cant quite bring myself to buy one, yet I know how important it or something similar could be. Thanks...💙🇬🇧👍
You mentioned that you like Farm2Feet better than Darn Tough. Could you explain why you like them better? Thanks for taking the time to do this video, and for sharing your expertise.
So glad to hear this gear info. But most important, seeing your smile and happy face. You bring such an upbeat perspective to handling the tough challenges of life.
Thanks for posting a post hike gear review! As a new hiker, seeing how gear holds up over the long haul is very helpful.
Congratulations!! How many pounds of food do you think was carried between towns? Yes, a video on the big 3 + stove kit, thanks, Stella!
Stella. Did you ever have a puffy jacket, or did you send that home? What do you think your food weighed, on average?
It seems hikers carry a lot of food. Thx for the video. I remember you letting the air out of your inflatable sleep pad at the beginning of your CDT videos, instead of the music.
My puffy for the AT is synthetic so it’s technically the black arcteyx atom I showed in the video. And I was around 2lbs/day plus a bit more if I was doing 25-30 miles for multiple days. My food bag was enormous lol 🤦🏽♀️
Thanks for explaining your hiking gear!
Surely seems very light to me. Your gear did serve you well. I am so happy for you; it was such a delight to follow your hike Stella 💙
Second that!
Videos like this are so interesting, thank you for doing this! Especially appreciated how you said the order of what you packed :) Would love links to some of this stuff if you have the time.
Im sure lots of future hikers benefited from this info.
Thanks for going over your gear! Its always fun to see how other people pack for a long hike!
Great to see another video! Yay!! 🎉
Thanks for the great info.
Hi Stella!! Good to hear from you!!
Was watching your PCT Sierras vid and was in awe when you said you had 12 days of food! 12 lbs total pack base weight sounds so much better! Happy Trails! 🌈🏞🏕
Nice video! Very useful information….thank you.
Thank you so much for this info 🙏
Great to see you. 😊
Good morning, that's a very light loadout, awsome that you got a new pack when you did and it holds everything with room to spare seems like.
12.5 is GREAT 🎉… nice job
Thanks for sharing. I sure do miss your intro music every morning 😀
Very nice loadout ...12.5 +2 liters water 5lb ,,+ approx. typical 2lb per day food& snacks ,,15lb per week .....30-32lb. ,... don't forget to pick up a couple fuel cannisters to be ready for a quick outing ... always want to be ready when the urge hits ..
Sorry I missed this. I just got back from backpacking. I'm glad you are doing well, especially your knees. Love your haircut!!!
Wow! Life in a backpack and you said you had many 'luxury items'! A great lesson on survival with simplicity!
Interesting video!
8:42 I have Black Diamonds as well since begin of the year. Little bit different design, telescope the upper end and folding at the bottom. Never used them because I'm so used to swinging and balancing with my arms. But today I packed them in doing San Mateo Peak in New Mexico. So on the last mile of a 9 mile out-and-back hike I gave them a try. Mixed impressions 🤔but mostly good😄
Good info.
Stella excellent review of your gear. I’m hoping after all the journaling you did, you will think about a small book with poems and thoughts from your journey.
Good thing you started your AT hike early and got finished early. They are really having some serious flooding in New England these days, especially Vermont & Maine.
Interesting. Thanks.
Nice to hear your music.
Could you do a quick video on how to edit your videos and upload them while on trail via your phone...
Stella, need to ask you about your camp shoes. What brand are they? 10oz and way flatter than trying to pack crocs. Please let me know when you can. Thanks! Loved watching your videos, glad you finished strong!
Thanks for making this! Do you have a lighterpack or a gear list somewhere?
I was really curious about your bivy. I didn't really know UL bivys existed. As a section hiker, I'm hesitant to stay in a shelter because I have a fear of critters crawling on my face or getting in my sleeping bag, but a bivy seems like a good solution! I'm curious about how your rain jacket worked for you. Did it keep you dry and warm? How well did it breathe? Most people opt for the lighter-weight jackets, but they don't seem to perform well, so I'm wondering if yours did. Could be worth the extra weight!
Hi Stella 👋 Thank you so much for sharing your gear list with us. It's very helpful. I have a question regarding your videos. You did such an excellent job documenting your thru-hike! I'm curious as to the phone you used and if you just held it in your hand while you were hiking, or did you use the selfie stick you showed us? The videos were very stable and clear. Also, if I might ask, what editing software do you use? Thank you again for sharing your adventure! You are a true inspiration 🥾♥️
I bought my Altra Timp trail runners in 2018. Yes, they need to be retired! I live in south FL so they don’t see rocks or mountains unless I’m traveling. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Altras!
Sure have missed your adventures.
Thank you soooo much h for sharing. The AT "bosses" are recommending bear canisters due to so many bears . How did you handle this? They say hanging bags is not good enough.
Happy to see you again Stella! I have a couple of questions. 1. Do you think if you had a do over would you have considered switching to a tent vs the tarp?
2. Your the second peeson I know that uses farm to feet socks. Im curious on what you like about them vs Darn Tough.
Thanks for your comment! And I would have kept the trap unless it was super buggy or super rainy and if there were fewer shelters/hostels. And the farm to feet don’t shrink like darn toughs do!
@@StellaHikes thank you!
Great setup! I’m trying out the Anda UL bivy and tarp right now. I think I’m going to make the switch for good. Even though I love my durston gear x-mid pro 1 so much. I love gear way too much. 😂 also, testing out the Neighborhood Packs Ultra Grid 40l pack. Check them out!
Nice video. So awesome IKEA let her borrow one of their rooms to film in!
Looking ahead StellaHikes. Wise choice starting your 2023 AT thru early. Bad weather in the North East.
Where there any decision making or thought out plan due to weather changes to hike the journey to Maine?
Love the AT blaze mug on the back wall, where did you get that? 🧐
🦋
Again, congratulations and well done. Crazy weird but cathartic to see you sitting on a "comfy couch"! Did you just check you backpack "as is"? I am flying to Bangor to hike the 100 Mile Wilderness NOBO in August and am worried on how my full backpack will be treated as "checked" baggage for the flight.
Yeah checking a full pack is so scary but I just made sure everything was inside or strapped securely and the I put a trash bag on the outside of it / I put it in a trash bag and had the flight desk tag it from the top strap. It worked great! Have fun!
Thank you so much! How are your knees? By the way? I hope they are feeling much better! It’s a one piece of gear that I would love for you to maybe try to demonstrate how it works is the movie I don’t quite understand how that works plastic tube. Just curious You could be used instead of intent, does that mean it has some type of a frame to keep it up off of your head? I just have to say that I am so glad that you I have been watching other hikers like 0GNT and Taylor, the Nahamsha hiker. The weather through New Hampshire, and Maine has gotten even worse than when you were up there. The rivers and streams are horrible! I feel so badly for everyone attempting to get up there right now. It just seems so scary! Thanks again for posting. It was wonderful to see the notification because I’ve been wondering how you’ve been doing. :-)
Stella and gang timed it perfectly - just before the weather turned.....
Thanks for the video but I'm confused...I've been unable to find a 20o quilt that light! I checked EE Enigma and to get one around 15oz it has to be a 40o quilt? Am I missing something? I would dearly love a 15oz 20o quilt at any price!
Gonna be wondering what tarp that is. Really hoping you let the company and model slip in a later vid. Is the 20F quilt an old EE when they had less fill?
Ty so much, What brand is the Mid layer yellow hoodie? I would love a layering guide for cold weather and sleep as I live in the southern united states and no nothing of cold weather layering lol
Thank you! It’s a Rab mid layer!
After people complete a thru hike do they wash all of their gear? 🧍🏽♀️👍🏻🙂
New challenge. Sobo starting on 1/1. 😂
Great job Stella. One quick question how did you like that rain jacket in the summer? Was it too hot or did it ventilate good enough?
I loved it and it ventilated really well but definitely too warm in super hot weather!
@@StellaHikes thank you
How bout your phone and any handy apps u loaded into it prior to trail?
Awesome base weight
If you were taking 4-5 days to do section hiking . Any recommendations on south end?
I'm proud of you what's next
Shoot, my laptop backpack for work weighs 12lbs, that is AWESOME!!!!
I know...still can't get over how strong thru-hikers are.
Stella, what is special about the Patagonia baseball style cap?
The bill and body keeps its shape better than ultralight caps!
@@StellaHikes Thanks! I loved following your AT journey.
thanks stella be well whats next?
That was interesting. Did you practice carrying that weight before you started the hike or when you hiked the past "first" hike. That is quite a bit to carry everyday for several miles, "500" miles and then some. You are strong. The food you ate must have burned very quickly.
Yes I definitely practice carrying a fully pack before I start every trail!
Maybe you should consider raffling off some of the gear.
How you been since after the trail I know that Post trail depression will kick your butt
What county are you in Colorado ❤ maybe will run into u
Hi there! I’m making my prep list and buying gear for next years thru hike. Did you “pack” health insurance somehow? This seems to be a massive hurdle to figure out 😢
Hey yes it’s definitely tough! Some of my hikes I opted to go without health insurance (not a good idea) but this last hike I was able to get on a plan through WA state where I was living. Where do you live? Maybe there are some affordable options if you are quitting your job to hike.? Wish I had more info for you!
@@StellaHikes I live in NY. There’s Medicare through the state but it sounds like they might not qualify me because I have a lot of investments and savings. I’m still working on figuring this out! Thanks for replying!
Stell, did you hear Tayl is off trail til Sept… ?
I didn’t!
Did you ever post the drawing I made for you?
Dang! who's the new hot chick in comfy apt? 😂 I miss the grungy, exhausted, trail-busting Stella ❤
Don't forget huffing and puffing .... :-)
How big was your Fanny pack?
Welcome back - for more global appeal I wish you would have presented weight in metric g or kg instead of just pounds and ounces.
Ohh didn’t even think about that sorry! Next time!
I have been so impressed with you, as you bring a mindfulness to thru-hiking which sets you apart from other hikers I've seen on You Tube. I'm an Appalachian native (western North Carolina) who hiked in Great Smokies National Park in my youth, before spending most of my adult life overseas, 13 years of that in New Zealand. I would like to encourage you to consider doing the Te Araroa thru-trail in NZ, which runs for over 1900 miles from Cape Reinga at the tip of the North Island to Bluff at the tip of the South Island. It's considered one of the most spectacular thru-hikes in the world (takes 4-5 months). And you would love the indigenous Maori spirituality which infuses everything in NZ (the world's most beautiful country!). In two weeks I am returning permanently to New Zealand, after trying to resettle in the US this past year, and if you decide at some point to take on the challenge of Te Araroa, I will happily be a Trail Angel for you. For a brief intro to Te Araroa, see www.msrgear.com/blog/guide-thru-hiking-new-zealands-te-araroa-trail/#:~:text=Stretching%203%2C000%20km%20from%20Cape,the%20world's%20major%20thru%2Dhikes.
Wow...
