I have had good luck pairing trail runners with a thin neoprene socks for snowy and wet trails. Feet are wet but warm. Thanks for the tips, Stella. 👍
Ooo I forgot about that! I have good luck with that method too actually- I tried it on my CDT section in the San Juan’s and it works super well. Great for summer hiking in the snow I think!

What a great tool you have created, seriously. The devil is in the details, and you were incredibly thorough. 💯 agree with tougher rain gear and warm layers. The weight is laughable compared to being cold and wet. The ball cap also spreads a bug net out nicely.👍 Yeah, you've gotta have hope, but you touched on something really important... 25:31 change the connection with the suck. 😊 Well said. This is so helpful because this is the one area (rain protection) that I'm still trying to dial-in. I'm curious how Leffe liked his Lightheart gear rain gear, because that's what I ended up buying (haven't tried it out yet). I debated for the longest time over trying lightweight gore-tex gear that could potentially wet-out or going with a non-breathable, but waterproof nylon jacket/pants (the LH gear set) and risk getting drenched in my own sweat. Went for the LH gear, honestly, because it was less expensive!
A positive attitude will get you far in life…. If you do not have it, you will not flourish….😊
Glad you got done when you did. Later hikers had rain for days that created flooding so depending on where they were some had to get off trail.

Not necessary but could be nice! You could try it and see what you think and send it home if it’s not your thing! I think the trees and wind and climbs might get in the way of an umbrella on the AT

There is no perfect hike weatherwise on a long through hike!
You had snow and freezing rain in your earlier start. Others had torrential rain and flooding!
The ultimate challenge, then is weather and secondly, the distance is my conclusion.

Thank you Stella, good info. A quick thought on socks: Sealskinz and Showers Pass Waterproof socks have kept my feet warm and dry during hikes in intermittent rain but I’ve yet to try them out during steady downpours such as the ones you experienced on the AT. Curious to know if there are any socks that can keep our feet dry through an extended deluge. On the flip side, I would love to know what type of Sun hoodie you wore on the trail. I recall that you mentioned the brand in one of your vlogs…..I think 👍.
I am considering Hiking the AT in a couple years and have done about 1600 miles so I know what I will be doing when I turn 80. I would like to see a video about all the places to stay along the trail hostels and such. I have stayed in several but there are many that I have never heard of. You could retire with an app. showing hostels at shuttles. Thanks I have enjoyed following you.
Very, very interesting video! If I ever decide to do a thru hike, I'll definitely re-watch this. Do you think it would be possible to hike the AT if you only hiked on non-rainy days? Are there enough dry days to even make the whole trip! Probably not.
I hiked the AT and had less than five days with heavy rain. Of course more days with occasional showers. Started around May 1st though which increase the chance of nice weather a lot. A couple of years later I started at Springer at around the same date for a 5-6 week section hike and had more rain in that period than on the complete thruhike. Still not what I'd consider a lot of rain though. So, with luck, a fairly late start date and finishing before October you probably could do the complete AT and skip the really rainy days. Problem is the luck part which is really hard to plan for.
Hi Stella 🖐 Great video, very useful tips. Were you never tempted to carry an umbrella? Or are they just too much hassle. I can't decide whether to take one on my first thru hike.🤔🇬🇧💙
Hi thanks ☺️ And I brought my umbrella at the bringing I think 🤔 but then sent it home because I never used it! I think it works great if the circumstances allow for it- no low hanging branches and/or no wind!
That was awsome. Remember the couple that offered to gift you a hostel for the night? Did you say that you didn't want to impose on them the next morning with getting you to the trail? Also, do you have any second thoughts about the danger you sidestepped. For, example the 🐊 gators. I would like to hear about the hostles. Do you check in and go directly to bed, or eat a meal waiting? Do you request a breakfast from a menu in advance? The food always looked so good. Is it one price fits all? How do get the trail magic, the chocolate?
Hi, I'm curious about your footwear. Some have problems with Goretex shoes/boots getting (extremely) smelly when used wet for extended periods. You seemed to have wet conditions on parts of your thruhike. Did you experience any issues with your Altra-boots?
I’m sorry your experience in New England especially VT, NH and Maine was so wet and muddy. We who live here are all tired of it…..well I can’t speak for everyone but many are tired of it for sure.
Great feedback about keeping your spirits up on rainy days by hoping for better events/experiences ahead. Of course, the challenge is how DO you get your mind to embrace "hope" when everything sucks around you - but that would be another video altogether.... :-). Thanks again.!

I really hate being wet! I think if I was hiking the AT this year with all that rain, I would go bonkers!!!! Congrats on keeping it together Stella….😊👍👏🏻
What gear swaps did you do leaving so early on the AT?? I've done a bunch of short weekend hikes and remember getting bulky and heavy.

If there is one discomfort I truly don’t like is walking wet for any long period of time and add to that being cold. Your best single advice is the strength you get from hope and reminding yourself with positive thoughts. This was another great vlog. ❤

Great stuff, I go really overboard in rain. I have a hmg pack also and I use a compactor bag along with dcf bags for quilt and clothes. Any bags in the outside pocket are also dry bags. I don’t use a cover. I really enjoyed following your hike. Congrats

Great video and lots of helpful tips. What about thunderstorm safety? I know it’s different on the east coast than out west when ridge hiking during thunderstorm season.

Thanks Stella, the only thing I would add regarding rain pants is to purchase those with zippers the last 10-12 inches on the legs, that way you don’t have to “deboot” every time you put on or take off your rain pants.
