RIP and long live Kirk Douglas (December 9, 1916 - February 5, 2020), aged 103
And
RIP and long live Richard Harris (October 1, 1930 - October 25, 2002), aged 72
You both will always be remembered as legends.
Nicholson, Sally Field, Kirk, Jack Lemmon, and Lauren Bacall- all in awe of Harris’ charisma. Legend.
Well said
A tear for times gone by and never to be seen again
WOW! I know Laddie Boy that you were thinking about this piece. But! OMG are those truer words for today?
OH.....AMEN to that for sure!
You can always tell the stature of a man's character by how humbly & generously he thanks those before him for his success & career. James Cagney is another such giant.
ving rhamnes giving his golden globe to jack lemmon :D
Man oh man! Just listened to Richard Harris again in his luminous and heartfelt story honoring Kirk Douglas and my God! Mr. Harris, you lovely and crazy and glorious Irishman, your honest respect sprinkled with humble accolades for your childhood idol Mr. Douglas, always brings me to tears! That's not acting, that's pure spirit, love and unabandoned gratitude! Bless Richard, what a class act an Irish treasure shared with the world! Look at Kirk, he was beaming with pride, joy and that energy of life that comes from the thankfulness and respect of another of his acting peers! Outstanding!
I never thought I'd ever hear Richard Harris calling anyone his hero, just goes to show.
I was about 19ys old and saw Richard in Camelot in L.A... Life altering experience
I knew Richard Harri's Cousin a Jesuit Priest who lived in Limerick. every time Richard would come back to Limerick he always sought out Fr. Paddy and instead of saying hello he had the same greeting "Paddy are you still praying for me you're my only hope of getting into Heaven" Fr. Paddy lived to be age 99 so I am certain Richard made it into Heaven. I met him once in Limerick what an amazing story teller I just sat there listening and laughing at his stories.
Richard Harris one of the greats. I love waking up earlier on Saturday mornings just to watch films he was in.
RICHARD HARRIS WAS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, AN OUTSTANDING ACTOR! NO KIDDING!
Yes, we know...

The honesty of Richard Harris is one in a million
Always one of the best storytellers . . .
Gwap Gwap Savage Hmm. Wish I could help but I'm not sure what language that was. Sorry.
@Raffael, after playing prof. Alvo Dumbledore on 2nd Harry Potter`s film (The chamber of secrets)
Easy to do when you actually lived a life.
@@JonnySublime . . . Still takes a gift few have . . .
How can ya not love Richard Harris?
Amen! What was Guenevere thinking?! His King Arthur was
His King Arthur was superb! Charming, loyal, highly principled, and completely focused on making Camelot more civilized. He was also very attractive and charismatic. Keep your Lancelot, Jenny! Arthur has it ALL over him!
Impossible!
Boy oh boy, what a great story teller he was!
A great man and even a greater actor. We'll always miss your Irish accent my friend, I sincerely believe wherever you are, you're loved and admired. We miss you too much! Amazing, amazing actor indeed... RIP
Richard Harris may be the greatest acting genius I ever saw.
I saw Harris on stage in London, and I saw Burton do Camelot in Los Angeles.
Both were great, but Burton was born to the role of Arthur in that show.
And Vanessa Redgrave was more masculine than Franco Nero in the film version . . .
Harris..a life lived.
A fantastic actor indeed

He’s so cool
Richard Harris was always a class act.
Its funny that Danny DeVito hosted this, Richard Harris when working with Russell Crowe on Gladiator had said they would go drinking in his old hunts in his native city Limerick, Harris died before they had a chance to do it together, so to honour his memory Russell Crowe visited Limerick and Harris favourite pub, this all comes full circle when the local chipper which is owned by Danny DeVitos cousins brought Russell Crow some fish and chips to eat
When those rooms at award shows used to be filled with talent and giants. Never again.
Rest in peace Richard Harris
Pure Class, that you don't see today
It's amazing that saying 'thanks' costs nothing, but means so much. It also shows that being kind and generous need not be by means of money, but by both kind and decent words and actions. We need so much for of these values to play out in life. It's a lovely clip.
I met Mr. Harris during the road show of Camelot, til this day I cherish the memory and his autograph...he was an amazing talent and storyteller....ty AFI for posting, fabulous channel too...thumbs up !
oh richard harris was a character! wild irish man and so loved!!!!!!!!!!!
A master class on how to express gratitude.
Richard was superb in Camelot. Great film.❤️
Richard Harris Masterful Irishman R.I.P..
This is an exquisite example of not taking no or relinquishing your passion for what you believe in and what do you feel you can accomplish. Well done Richard Harris, It wouldn't of been the beautiful work of art but it came with it were not for your determination. Thank you! Steve Gardner
sometimes people say things they dont mean and later regret it, this is harris respecting a man he looked up to and admired
@Joseph Preston yes Harris and douglas clashed personality wise, but they obviously didn't bare any grudges towards each other, and they let the past go,
Lord bless you Richard Harris! What an eloquent, generous, honest and soulfull story teller and his sincere humility and gratitude came thru in abundant measure! What a class act and Mr. Harris never lost his boyish cheeky smile and his youthful passion for life, love, vocation and rabble rousing with his good dear friend and comrade in arms, Peter O'toole!
Richard Harris my all-time favorite actor. So in love with him when I was a young girl... okay still am, and Camelot one of my all-time favorite movies. You may be one of the greats to others, but to me you're the greatest. ❤️
I agree with you. Richard Harris is my all time favorite! Love him💋💞💖💕No guy comes close.

He’s so cool
I'm absolutely in love with Richard Harris! His King Arthur was the greatest interp re
Oh, Richard ...❤❤❤❤❤ he totally has me, always has.
I would have loved see Ríchards career on AFI. His drinking stories with Otoole are legendary
My fellow Irishman born 3 miles from me.
A genuinely nice crazy bastard 👍
R.I.P Richard
He was one of the greats.
I was just reading a story when Harris gave Michael Caine a spliff, Caine left to get a cab and was laughing so hard no cab would give him a lift so he had to walk all the way home laughing lol
A Limerick legend.
Like myself.
That makes him one of God's best works!
Are you a Leprechaun?
Do you each Lucky Charms for breakfast daily?
Do you get some kind of Lucky Charms discount?
And finally, can I have some of your pot of gold?
Lovely tribute 2 great actors ..
Loved him, lived him, a class act, a maverick, authentic, no bs, what you saw was what you got!
One of the greatest talk show guests of all time. I used to love his stories when he was on Carson, Griffin, Cavett etc. back in the sixties......especially his drinking stories with his pal Peter O'Toole.
I loved Richard Harris!
Delightful eloquence from Richard Harris. Well done to Kirk for his generosity of spirit re the casting of Camelot. Jaysus, Harris but you're missed. :-)
Nailed it!
As a man from limerick i can only say that i am proud to be irish
So heartfelt and genuine. Love this man.
Harris is a hero who knew how to tell a story. May he RIP.
You have to love this heartfelt tribute! Harris is the kind of person who knows exactly why he's there that night, and you just know he means every word of what he says!
Nice props from the great Richard Harris to Kirk Douglas, may they both rest in peace.. cA
Lovely heartfelt story.
I'm sure he would have done an extraordinary performance as Dumbledore in the following movies. It's a shame a lot of HP's fans underappreciate his talent and nuances. He will always be the best.
He is by far the best Dumbledore
Rest In Peace Michael Gambon (1940-2023) the other great Dumbledore. And like Richard Harris another great Irish 🍀 actor.
A brilliant tribute from a master storyteller.
A master at speaking in public......
Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole, Kirk Douglas, Richard Burton...those wonderful days when upper crust class was the norm and not the exception. My father is a big fan of them all, and he passes his love of them onto me. I grew up admiring these guys more than the actors of my era - the 70's to the mid-80's. Legends, all of them. As of this writing, Kirk Douglas is the only one still alive at the incredible age of 102. Wow!
They are in all listing to him what a legend
R.I.P to this legend who died exactly 7 years ago today on the 25th of October 2002, this guy knew how to have fun and i honor you on this day sir, R.I.P i will never forget you.
Richard Saint John Harris (1 October 1930 25 October 2002) you are missed.
Just over 15 years now
) 😢
Touching, by the way there are great actors in the audience, Lehman and Nicholson and many more...really great to watch such videos that have stored such moments of time.
Both actors might have had strong egos, but they both had well balanced egos...this is a fantastic tribute....and Richard Harris had a half decent voice by the way, check out MacArthur Park.
That is a great tribute
Lovely man. Glad he got his life straightened out by the end.
I had an afternoon with Richard Harris, drinking with him in a bar I used to go in, in Fulham(my manor, in London)..top geezer, very humble, funny and giving in conversation..I liked him, before I met him..loved him, afterwards..RIP Richard..and Kirk..x

Where waz ya, gaz - Dingles on The Broadway or The Lord Palmerston on King's Road?
@@hyena131 it was in the pub (now a poncy bar/restaurant ), over the road from Parsons Green Tube..directly opposite from the tube..Mary, who used to own it(don't know if she still does), was a bunny girl at the Playboy club, down Park Lane..I think he knew her from there..long time ago, now..can't for the life of me ,remember the bloody pubs name..and it used to be one of the regular watering holes...memory is going, old boy..can you remember it?..right under the the railway bridge, there..😳
@@garybuller5656
I know that pub (had a drink there once a few moons ago) and like you can't remember it. I'll ask the old man as he's a veritable encyclopaedia on long gone pubs. I'm not bad, but he's better. If he doesn't know, one of his mates will. I'll get back to you, mate.
@@hyena131 well done, son...Christ, I spent a lot of time in there..lot of characters...do you remember Mary?
@@garybuller5656
Afraid not, lad. Used to go to Dingles back in the day (late drinks), but as a rule didn't venture often to Fulham. Chelsea boy. Not The White Horse is it? Parsons Green proper posh now. Had a school mate who lived at Sullivan Ct - the big block of council flats by The Thames.
Great story, eloquent as always.
This is a real treat! LOVE Richard Harris, and yes, MacArthur Park is my all time favorite song...OF ALL TIME!! Can't explain it..it just gets under my skin. God Bless You Both!..thanks for posting.....
I gotta say that Harris looks a like a fucking god with his silver hair and his specs. That suit is awesome as aswell. He didn't lose an ounce of that Celtic charm. Just an absolute boss. They don't make true hardcore Thespians like this anymore. The ones that work hard and play harder.
But I still can't deny it's poignancy. It's amazing that the guy getting roasted is still alive while Harris who was much younger than Kirk has since kicked the bucket. The way he expresses his admiration and gratitude towards the elder Douglas is so innocent and almost childlike, making him seem so much younger.
Yes, that breed is past. Richard Harris, Burton, Oliver Reed, Sean Connery, Peter O'Toole, I know there's a couple more that I can't think of.
Great story teller
RIP Richard Harris
Richard harris legend
His son Jared has VERY similar mannerisms-voice, cadence, pacing-in his speech similar to his dad minus the accent, and he’s just as talented.
RIP Richard Harris
Limerick OWN LEGEND SO PROUD OF HIM RIP RICHARD !
IM HERE TODAY BECAUSE THIS LEGEND DIED EXACTLY 10 YEARS AGO!!! but no im not sad and nor would he want anyone to be sad, im here to remember him, his work and his amazing life, RIP harris!!
The thing about the actors of old. They really seemed OK being messy, flawed, humans. In fact, it almost seem to propel their careers, to feed them. Nowadays, actors are so determined to be liked and perfect, that they forget that they’re not.
Powerful life lessons in this short clip. Douglas understood the key fact that is all but extinct these days -- ye need not have to like someone to work with them and profit from it -- and Harris demonstrates what true, genuine gratitude and appreciation, respect and honor, sounds like. That too has become rare.
If RH led a complicated life, and had many facets to his personality--some good, some not--the one facet I always admired was the mind and heart that so truly understood Arthur in "Camelot". He "got it" and knew what the role of Arthur meant to him, literature, musical theatre, and world history. So many thanks to RH and Kirk Douglas for facilitating that.
That's an awesome anecdote awesomely told. Love it. Love the man.
Richard Harris amazing actor so he was great storyteller
This was posted 14 years ago. Just found it.
A gem.
Harris in the film “the field “ was one of the best films I’ve seen..
Mcarthurs Park did or for me, it gives me Chills just thinking about the song, and how Jimmy Webb explains the story behind it . Richard nailed it .
A more charming man never lived.
I love how bold and emphatic he is with his accolade, rather than anything wet and simpering.
Richard was outstanding in Orca, the Killer Whale. Great actor and will never be forgotten. RIP.
Loved the story of Harris been given the last rites by the priest and not regretting a minute of his life well lived.
That been said, whether he is above or below, we will never know.
I would love to see the whole show. I also love Kirk Douglas.
OMG Love so much Richard. RIP.
He'll always be the perfect Dumbledore.
Joseph Preston Well that's one way to look at it. Here's another way. A Millenial like myself would likely not even know about Kirk Douglas even if he had a A grade career if not for his son's work and the same can be said about Harris if not for his role in Harry Potter. It's a way for the younger audiences to be introduced to these legendary actors.
when i think about roman empire,Harris comes to my mind as the divi filius...Marcus Aurelius
@@chrisbreezy-ryanbarbosa4320 touché man, you are so RIGHT!! At least roles like this or situations like Michael Douglas, etc. keep the light burning for these legends.
Now there's something you don't see every day, A man called Horse thanking Spartacus.
to misquote someone, 'when a man is tired of watching Richard Harris, he must be tired of life'
Come on youtubers lets get more Harris clips up here. someone has to have some of the brilliant Harris/Parky interviews on VHS up in the attic, get 'em converted, get 'em up here!!
The more clips I see of Harris, the more I wished I would have watched him closer..
A room full of legends in awe of the geezer !
Great actor Richard Harris.
Amazing, that is true integrity. But anyone who has read the Ragman's Son knows what a man Kirk was.
Much missed Richard Harris..
Love this guy great actor
HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST EVER.
Richard is gone and so many other famous entertainers died in 2016 but amazingly Kirk is still with us. Good on him.
"Camelot" was huge step-up in Harris' career...it made him 'bankable' as a 'first-rank' movie-star..and a 'nod' from Kirk didn't hurt anything at all* ( *What's not mentioned is that Burton could not actually sing in any sense good enough to use his own voice, whereas Harris could be coached to get the most 'emotion' out of his true voice which was crucial to both the play and movie to convey emotion* )
Burton managed it on Broadway, so I think it would have worked out with either of them.
@@patrickmorgan4006 *Possibly...IF Warner wanted to come-up
w/the $$$$$$$$$$ for Burton, as opposed to $ for Harris*
Richard and Kirk had very similar characters and that's why they clashed and that's why they secretly like each either
22grena I’d say I’m the only man in the comments who knows that’s Tom Barry in your picture!😉
2 legends...loved them both!

@Brady2k10 May I post here with your yr old comment? Thanks Brady, because all I wanted to say was the same as you did. Richard Harris you are indeed missed. Even your little oral tribute to Kirk Douglas was filled with class. I'm going to view it again and surely again. " A law was made a distant moon ago here"
