I must say, my favorite part about every Master Sword Scene is that Link instinctively raises the blade skyward. Just like Fi instructed him at the beginning of Skyward Sword.
seriously, its like the one thing in botw that musically aligns EXACTLY with all of the other games. botw has a generally very lonely atmosphere and all of the musical connections are just motifs and subtle nods, but when you pull that sword you KNOW that youre playing a zelda game. its like botw link's one solid, unbreakable connection to all of the other distant and forgotten links
I just realized, in BOTW, pulling the Master Sword out isn't just a story element, it's an actual test of courage for the player. As you hold down the A button, you watch your health get drained, your first instinct is to let go of the button. You don't just get it for free in a cutscene, you have to EARN it. You have to show your commitment and courage in the face of danger, and hold that button down to the last sliver of the last heart to prove you deserve the sword. That's what we call fucking good game design, kids.
The TP one is very different. There you NEED the mastersword to become human again. It therefore feels more like an obstacle course than a test of some kind since there is the feeling that failure is simply not an option. You are going to succeed and you feel no fear for the tests therefore.
I love how in Wind Waker the emphasis is put on the re-colouration of the castle and the statues lowering their swords, and then it's like the composer realises he hasn't done the iconic Master Sword jingle yet and speedruns through it :P
how is that disappointing? the enemies are tough and the shield and swords breaking makes it harder so, the requirement for 13 hearts isn't disappointing and it's worth the reward
I think Breath of the Wild had the best scene. The music's tempo was perfect, and the feeling of seeing Link hold it felt so triumphant when you consider what Link has been through to get it back.

I love the Hero of Wind's little smile at 1:04 after testing out the sword. It make me a little worried that he might not be worthy. BotW link is probably the second least serious as he does that little extra swish before sheathing it.
It's like getting an old favorite toy back after many years of not seeing it, holding it. Anything. He had the Master Sword already a hundred years prior, so of course he's gonna be like that. The swing, the weight of it and how it fits in his hands...it feels right, familiar. Nostalgic even. I'm honestly surprised more than one memory didn't play out as he pulled the sword. Fi hiding in there, showing him the memory of what transpired there.
Does anyone tear up even a little every time this scene appears in a new Zelda? Something about the idea of seeing this legacy carrying on over time just hits me right here, for some reason
Going to leave like a "spoiler tag" for anybody that, even though it's been a month after release, doesn't want to be spoiled on in-game elements (contrary to if you read *other* comments) like the Master Sword because I've got some input on Breath of the Wild's Master Sword and _why_ it is what it currently is in the game. So yeah, the Master Sword "breaks" in the game. It has a base power/strength of 30, but will double to 60 in the presence of Ganon's Malice (i.e. pools of Malice, Guardians, inside Divine Beasts). I like to call it the "evil detector," or "Link's hero senses." But unfortunately the sword _will_ "break" (it "loses power") after some use. It seems like it has better durability when it's powered up in the presence of Malice, but even then it can still break at some point so it's best not to use it unless it's really necessary. It takes 10 minutes in real, *unpaused* time for it to recharge back to it's full durability. But why does it *break*?? Well, you'd have to understand the whole premise of this game during the development process. Nintendo really wanted to change the formula up to making one *GIANT* world instead of places that were basically giant rooms that would fade to white/black every time you entered a new area and the game needed to load in all the assets. They also pushed for this survival element where Link needed to forage to survive, getting/cooking food for hearts, materials and spoils for rupees, and weapons for self-defense. So let's focus on the weapons. All weapons have durability. Fully durability in the game is signified with a little gold sparkle in the upper right-hand corner of their picture in the menus. No sparkle means it's been used to strike something _at least_ once. Red and flashing means it's badly damaged. And when a weapon breaks, it's gone. But for the Master Sword, it's just a slot with a zero-power sword. In case you don't know, pulling the Master Sword makes a new slot for itself among your melee weapons. So the reason why the Master Sword "breaks" is most likely due to a universal algorithm used for all weapons, shields, and bows for when their individual values for durability reaches zero, the item breaks. But the Master Sword has a special case where it doesn't disappear when it breaks and instead is just pretty much a useless placeholder until the sword is of use again. The developers did not want to make the Master Sword unbreakable because it would undermine the utility of the other melee items found in the game; even though 30 power isn't the best, it would be a decent one-handed weapon to use if it had infinite durability and thus would undermine most other one-handed weapons. A personal theory of mine is that they wanted to implement the Master Sword to enter a still-usable, but very weak in power, state rather than have it break; the Master Sword would drop to a power within the single digits while it waited to recharge. But then the problem with this would be that the "universal algorithm" for weapon durability would conflict with this idea, i.e. the game could think the "weak Master Sword" is a brand new sword with it's own durability and thus it could break or get stuck in a loop of needing to repair should the player manage to abuse the weak Master Sword. It would have basically been too complicated to make a never-breaking Master Sword because one route would potentially undermine other melee weapons and the other route would conflict with the game's established logic. But how does the Master Sword "breaking" work in the game overall? It at least teaches the player to use everything at their disposal. It is also used to break the ever-long grip of better weapons undermining the use of other items, something that has plagued the Zelda series since day one (i.e. nobody uses the slingshot after they get the bow). Also it symbolizes the possibility of Link relying on the Master Sword too much in the past which eventually lead to his near-demise during the great Calamity. I haven't finished the game so of course I still have questions like "How did Link even get the Master Sword in the first place? Did he not undergo any trials or tribulations to earn the right to wield it? It can't be just because of fate or because of his apparent skill with the sword."
They would have done better to require players to get to the start of the second half of the game and then provide an unbreakable weapon. Same with the Hylian Shield, an unbreakable shield acquired somewhere after 2/3 of the game. There are plenty of other weapons and shields which are stronger or have better special effects. I felt really silly walking around with the Master Sword but wielding a Dragonbone Boko Spear.
Temporary Account i know when you signal a comment it disappears from your screen, so I guess that’s what happened Sorry for accusing you without evidence
The title is "Evolution of Master Sword Cutscenes in *Zelda Games* (1986-2017)" Emphasis on *Zelda Games*. Hyrule Warriors isn't canon, but it's still a *Zelda Game*. Smash Bros. isn't one.
You forgot Oracle of Seasons linked game, when the Master Sword comes to your aid being found in a Lost Woods of another country. It's simple, but still counts.
A Link to the Past (SNES) and Twilight Princess versions top the others so far for me. I love the music and the wind coming from the sword in Twilight Princess giving it a more epic feel and I love the delay, the Pendants changing colors and the sounds in the SNES version of A Link to the Past. Those two are tied in 1st while Breath of the Wild would be 3rd. I do love seeing how the Sword tests you by draining your life to a certain amount.
My favourite was the Twilight Princess one. The wind washing away the clouds like a shockwave. And I preferred the Twilight Princess Link. He looked even more adult and bulky and handsome in that one. I couldn't bear to see the one from Skyward Sword, he was looking like fourteen or such, too young. The one from Breath of the Wild was a bit thin and teenage-looking again when half nude (even if the villagers reactions were funny and priceless). Adult Link from the remake of Ocarina of Time on 3DS came close to the handsome adult I expected, but yeah... I agree on one point though, Link is DEFINITELY a handsome guy. They created a hottie for a Hero especially with each gaming evolution. Breath of the Wild was a masterpiece. The graphics were just endlessly breathtaking me.
P.s making ganondorf a black red head is a bit racist and making link one direction lookalike wannabe is a bit of a bad brainwashing effect on this generation
The master sword was in the first legend of Zelda but it was called some thing different and you needed 13 hearts to get it and that's were that came from in breath of the wild
seeing the evolution of attaining the master sword throughout time just makes me cry. good god, we've all come so far. this is it, folks. we did it. we can go home now. this is too beautiful.
The only non-Canon cutscene just so happened to be the best one. Don't get me wrong, I consider Breath of the Wild to be the best, and Twilight Princess is my favorite, but that Hyrule Warriors cutscene...
Lilkxdude4101 Way more than that because near the beginning of BOTW it even says that 10,000 years ago another hero (probably named Link used the master sword to seal Ganon away with the help of the princess of Hyrule (probably names Zelda). So I wouldn't be surprised if the Master Sword was actually around 100,000 years old or even more for that matter.
Everyone wonders why the blade hurts or even kills those who are too weak to hold it but remember that each link who has drawn it is already a hero and is protected by the key items of power that he has claimed beforehand. Edit: it does make me wonder what happened to the mark of the triforce to this link when he died. Perhaps it lies dormant or it was simply so that we could get the proper experience
linck7up it feels extra good to be getting the master sword in breath since your faking grinding shrines to get the thing, and it is holy satisfying when you do get it
i absolutely love how, in botw, nearly every musical callback is just a subtle nod to the older games, and the entire game feels kinda lonely as you traverse a broken hyrule. that is, until you pull the master sword, and link is instantly "linked" directly back to all of his predecessors, holding the same exact sword while the exact same melody plays. it feels like the one moment in the game where all of the forgotten time and heroes of the past are brought back to one moment, and in that moment link truly becomes a hero. to me it just feels like the botw version of this cutscene has so much more thematic significance than nearly any of the others, and its really an incredible moment. also, i just noticed that the master sword theme is a slowed down version of the jingle that plays when you get an important item, just given a LOT more emphasis since its such an important item to the story
it isn't useless outside boss battles EDIT: it's Very useful both inside and outside boss battles, because when you are near guardians or things controlled by malice (weird black red stuff) , it glows and gains 30 more damage also, it doesn't break, if it did, you wouldn't have it anymore would you? it loses power then you would have to wait 10 minutes
It can still lose power while powered up (when it starts to glow). It happened to me while I was in Hyrule Castle which keeps the Master Sword powered up at all times while Link is within the area.
Cool down? So what? It takes 10 minutes, by the time it finish cooldown I already killed the boss with lynel bow and bomb arrows with royal guards weapons.
If you got a sword like that, wouldn't you want to hold it up in the air? I would! It's a magic blade that can pierce evil, I would feel pretty powerful and want to hold it up in the air like that.
In Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak, there's a reference to the Master Sword where Hamtaro and Bijou collect three marbles to put into the pedestal, then pull the sword out. (Even though it's called "The Legendary Spoon")
I love how the great deku tree mentions Fi when telling Link to respect the sword. Which brings up the question- is Fi conscious in the sword? Can she see the world around her as she waits in silence trapped in the blade? Knowing the answers and knowing she can help the hero but never having the ability to? Or is it the more disturbing possibility, that every one of the reborn spirits of the hero has had to wield the blade of ages... that carries a dead guardian? Has the weight of the master sword only increased, now that it holds the corpse of the goddess' agent?
I don't think you played botw so lemme just tell you, yes fi is active (at least in this game) because her sound effect is in one of the cutscenes (either after trial of the sword or links defeat I can't remember)
For special matters I have to say that the master sword in the Legend of Zelda franchise is the most popular, iconic, recurring, strongest and most powerful weapon which is broken.
A link to the past is a good one. The way they make multiple fakes and how you have to navigate a maze just to find the real one . The wind waker one is good as well and I love how time starts to flow again once link pulls out the sword from the long lost castle/ yenole of hyrulr as ots partly buried beneath the oceans deep waves . Though to be honest they are all amazing scenes and my favorite part of the franchise is when link gets to pull out the master sword.
Master Sword's function: ALTTP= Fire beam while full health OOT= Transform Link into Adult TWW= Unlock Ganon's monsters TP= Allow Link to transform between Human and Wolf freely SS= Increase Skyward Strike range and reduce its charge time ALBW= Fire beam while full health Hyrule= ???(Never play it) BOTW= Fire Skyward Strike while full health, Increase damage and gain infinite energy against Demise's force

A Link to the Past - Its discovery
Ocarina of Time - Its legacy and purpose (a.k.a. the game where it became iconic to the series)
Wind Waker - Its restoration and death
Twilight Princess - Its need in times of darkness
Skyward Sword - Its origin story
A Link Between Worlds - Its nostalgia? (Don't know, haven't played this game, don't know what its story is.)
Hyrule Warriors - Its power and flaw (it has a few flaws in the game that are apparent to gameplay and story, no spoilers though. Figure it out on your own time.)
Breath of the Wild - Its worth

BotW link is probably the second least serious as he does that little extra swish before sheathing it.
angeldude101 botw link in general is a loveable asshole
It's like getting an old favorite toy back after many years of not seeing it, holding it. Anything. He had the Master Sword already a hundred years prior, so of course he's gonna be like that. The swing, the weight of it and how it fits in his hands...it feels right, familiar. Nostalgic even. I'm honestly surprised more than one memory didn't play out as he pulled the sword.
Fi hiding in there, showing him the memory of what transpired there.
Botw Looks like he just got a missing piece of his hope back
I mean the sword has always been an extension of him the guy pulled it at like 13 or something
"Evolution of Master Sword Cutscenes in Zelda games (1986 - 20-"
"1986"
._. Wait what???
First Zelda game, next year is legend of zeldas 35th anniversary
@@wherearemydamfrenchfries8013 But this is the master sword video and the master sword isn't in the first Zelda
I love that jingle ot plays everytime you get it and how link always raises it skywards. I hope that never stops.
These cutscenes give me chills every time
Does anyone tear up even a little every time this scene appears in a new Zelda? Something about the idea of seeing this legacy carrying on over time just hits me right here, for some reason
it must've been such a good feeling in skyward sword when the sword got it's full power
Twilight Princess seems the most epic with that pipe organ, perfectly matches with the aesthetic of the game and that moment. Gives me chills.
@@jlinkous05 I swear I never figured out how to get the hylian shield in botw

That theme is so so satisfying to hear knowing that your efforts and time are rewarded with a weapon to end your adventure once and for all.
you know you're a hardcore zelda fan when everyone of these cutscenes give you goosebumps
Aw the sweet memories.
To me Breath of the Wild cutscene was the best

My favorite is TP, and then A link to the Past, then Botw
Great video, Love your channel, but it is from 1991-2017 cx
Xooster Yeah im pretty sure the original zelda didnt have a master sword lol
Xooster yah, Zelda 1 has the "Magical Sword" I'm pretty sure.
Yeah, but it didn't really have a cutscene xD
the "magical sword" and the master sword are two different weapons
I know
Twilight Princess has the best Master Sword cutscene, in my opinion.
WHAT?! THE GREAT DEKU TREE IS BACK IN BREATH OF THE WILD!?!?
Yeah. You didn't know?
Oui
We got an Ocarina player over here!
Dwi Bagus Elrifi he embodies a new tree...
Diego Zavala Xed So you are saying he slapped a face on another tree? (Its a joke..)
2>30 wtf what weapon were you holding before the master sword a stick
R O X Λ S probably a torch
@@anonymousfrog1334 Yep, you use a torch to get there through the Lost Woods.
Using the same music throughout is just so awesome.
LOVE that they've mostly kept the same melody ever since ALTTP.
I just realised that zelda is the cross between Peter pan and king arthur
Aaron Sedgwick
Well,ok. :-/
Aaron Sedgwick um, i suppose you could look at it that way...
Well the creator said that he modelling link and the legend of zelda after Peter pan but wonder if he was influenced by King Arthur
P.s making ganondorf a black red head is a bit racist and making link one direction lookalike wannabe is a bit of a bad brainwashing effect on this generation
Aaron Sedgwick well he model link from Peter pan but he model the game design on memories he had as a child exploring caves forests
I love your channel
It's funny how a young link just pulls out the Master Sword like it's almost nothing😂
Then you get to BOTW and you almost die lmao
Twilight princess’ hits different, holy shit I get the chills when that cutscene plays
The master sword was in the first legend of Zelda but it was called some thing different and you needed 13 hearts to get it and that's were that came from in breath of the wild
You mean Magical Sword? Its way different.
Michael the Legendary Super Human. Are you a Zelda fan?
Ernesto III Prias Yeah. Why?
Botw was spossed to be a "zelda 1 remake" of sorts
The magic sword is not the master sword it was just a callback

The only non-Canon cutscene just so happened to be the best one. Don't get me wrong, I consider Breath of the Wild to be the best, and Twilight Princess is my favorite, but that Hyrule Warriors cutscene...
This damn melody!! Gawd, everytime I'm close to cry T.T but Twilight Princess...damn no cutscene is able to beat that!
Ehhhh so.....HOW OLD IS THE FRICKING MASTERSWORD?I mean like seriously
Emile Rouichi 7000+. Seriously.
As old as the Super Mushroom...
As old as Skyward Sword is the timeline. XD
Check the latest Zelda time line, add that to 100,100 years.
THE MOST IRONIC ONE WAS TWILIGHT PRINCESS

Do you mean iconic
1000th comment BTW but honestly always watch this vid for the satisfying sound effect
feels good to get the sword in every game but Breath of the Wild. not only do u not need it but the tree tells u it can brake
It doesn't really break... It's just has to recharge for 10 minutes...
You can, for an example, do the hole fight against Fireblight Ganon with the Master Sword, so even if it breaks, she is good!
Except it CAN'T break: if it runs out of energy, it goes on recharge, and it IS needed: it's the only weapon capable of killing Calamity Ganon.
James Martin you can kill Ganon without it
linck7up it feels extra good to be getting the master sword in breath since your faking grinding shrines to get the thing, and it is holy satisfying when you do get it
those who say in botw they will gain the blade i seriously wish to cut up, even that dude who calls some random torch the master torch
I love rubbing it in their faces when I actually do get the sword
Yea I want to *C U T* them up to
whats next?
evolution of Simon Belmonte's moonwalk?!
i absolutely love how, in botw, nearly every musical callback is just a subtle nod to the older games, and the entire game feels kinda lonely as you traverse a broken hyrule. that is, until you pull the master sword, and link is instantly "linked" directly back to all of his predecessors, holding the same exact sword while the exact same melody plays. it feels like the one moment in the game where all of the forgotten time and heroes of the past are brought back to one moment, and in that moment link truly becomes a hero. to me it just feels like the botw version of this cutscene has so much more thematic significance than nearly any of the others, and its really an incredible moment. also, i just noticed that the master sword theme is a slowed down version of the jingle that plays when you get an important item, just given a LOT more emphasis since its such an important item to the story
So, does the Master Sword break?
Bryce Alexis Well that's good because every damn weapon breaks.
rishka9825 if you use it when it's not needless it will run out of energy and need to recharge
yes it does! after 10min it will return, it is usless outside of boss fights!
it isn't useless outside boss battles
EDIT: it's Very useful both inside and outside boss battles, because when you are near guardians or things controlled by malice (weird black red stuff) , it glows and gains 30 more damage
also, it doesn't break, if it did, you wouldn't have it anymore would you? it loses power then you would have to wait 10 minutes
It can still lose power while powered up (when it starts to glow). It happened to me while I was in Hyrule Castle which keeps the Master Sword powered up at all times while Link is within the area.

Master sword only do 30 damage? Lol
nyi lever when facing gurdians and dungeon bosses and the final boss it does 60 and glows blue
Ye when fighting against ganon related things it becomes a weapon that does 60 damage
and when you are against a boss, it can't go in "regeneration" mode.
nyi lever 60 damage at full power which is crazy for a light weapon
Cool down? So what? It takes 10 minutes, by the time it finish cooldown I already killed the boss with lynel bow and bomb arrows with royal guards weapons.
The music is so triumphant.
Why do they hold the sword in the air like that? Because of the link from SS?
If you got a sword like that, wouldn't you want to hold it up in the air? I would! It's a magic blade that can pierce evil, I would feel pretty powerful and want to hold it up in the air like that.
Lilkxdude4101 Too bad Ocarina of Time had to be the odd one out.
Still, almost EVERY Link does it, not even knowing that the previous Link did the same thing.... I guess ancestry instinct.
In Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak, there's a reference to the Master Sword where Hamtaro and Bijou collect three marbles to put into the pedestal, then pull the sword out. (Even though it's called "The Legendary Spoon")
Too bad the master sword sucks balls in botw
But it kills guradians *with relative ease*
Name_taken. the sword can not break Lmao you have to wait 10 minutes if used on non ganon type enemies
Chillz Audio It can still break if you fight it with Dark Enemies, its just more useful as its power becomes 60
But it recharges
No, it already sucks in Oot, u know the big sword is faaaar stronger than it right?
Perfect moments in the tloz, i love all🤧💖❤
too bad the master sword fucking sucks in BOTW
I still die laughing when Midna flies off Wolf Link in the Twilight Princess cutscene
Ohohoh MAN the botw one gave me CHILLS!
Since 1992 A Link to the Past when you hear the same pulling The Master Sword music every time, to me it means you already won.
Pass all three sections of your CDL driving test and see that fresh new CDL minted:
We might never see one of this again.
Ocarina of time has my favorite sword pulling cutscene
Holy crap! The master sword in Twilight Princess is huge!
Fun fact that you probably already knew: Majora’s Mask is the only game without the master sword
Original, Zelda 2, four swords, links awakening
Master Sword's function:
ALTTP= Fire beam while full health
OOT= Transform Link into Adult
TWW= Unlock Ganon's monsters
TP= Allow Link to transform between Human and Wolf freely
SS= Increase Skyward Strike range and reduce its charge time
ALBW= Fire beam while full health
Hyrule= ???(Never play it)
BOTW= Fire Skyward Strike while full health, Increase damage and gain infinite energy against Demise's force
For me, all the best games have the Master Sword!
Hey Minish cap is good too
