Of course the rule was I had to do homework first, then video games. Lets just say I pretended the whole hour that I did homework all the while eyeing the open lid to my Nintendo and seeing the strip of gold cartridge. Best memory!
Great walkthrough! I’m here because I had this game back in 87’ and I never passed it. I fought Gannon, but never beat him. At age 41, it irked me. I got the NES mini cause I saw that it had Zelda. Haha.. indeed. I had the same thought when I saw that the playthrough is only a little over 2 hours. Took me a long time to finish when I was 10 or so. Had the paper-map with hand-drawn stuff on it to find my way around. Fun times!
MaynardOwns how old is your father. I remember I got this game as a five year old boy, that was way back when, and the nintendo cartridge was gold color.
I was so proud when I finally beat this game back in 1987 I was 16 and it took me a while. I remember actually calling that Nintendo gamer help line because I was stuck in the “lost woods” for days. I was literally addicted to this game. It just pulled me in. I remember that music from level 9 was so cool. I was playing day and night to finally beat the game so I could take a picture of tv showing the end of the game and submit it to Nintendo power and got my name published for berating Gannon. I was so proud of myself when I finished this game. But I can’t take all the credit. My Girlfriend (now my wife of 28 years) actually helped me beat those blue guards in level 5 to get the whistle to beat the level 5 boss. Those guys were a pita to kill because you had to get them at a side angle. Now I want to play it again. I still have it but the Nintendo system doesn’t work anymore. It just blinks red power lights on all my games. It’s funny I still remember the code to get to mike Tyson in mike Tyson’s punch out. He was another one who once you got past his minute and a half of deadly punches he was easy to beat. It was all about timing.
You can replace the cartridge conector and disable the nes 10 chip and your NES should be very reliable again. It’s a very easy repair, requires no soldering skill and there’s many tutorials on how to do it online.

Thank you for posting this. By far my favorite game growing up. I still remember the day my dad got me this, it came in the mail, used. Dad lived oversees and it was almost impossible to get a brand new copy of these. This brought back amazing memories and I just realized that getting that Golden cartridge was one of the greatest moments of my childhood.
I haven't seen this game since I was a child, but I've thought about it a lot! This was great to see, thank you. I loved how the game cartridge itself was a metallic gold color, and none of the other games were. Such a mysterious and magical game.
Just recently repaired my old NES by installing a new 72 pin connector and once I got it reassembled, this was the first game I popped in to play. Zelda was my very first original NES game I got for Christmas back in 1988 and the first true open world game I ever got to experience as a kid and the reason why I love open world games to this day.
When the processor couldn’t handle the amount of enemies/movement on screen, my brother and I used to call it “slowdownation” lol This was fun to watch, brought back a lot of memories
I beat it several times in 1988, then I beat it in a 10 hour sitting a couple of years ago. Muscle memory. Looking forward to doing the same with Metroid, Super Mario, and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. Also as much as I LOVE the original Zelda, the music and sound effects are absolutely haunting. It makes me feel as though I’ve been transported to another realm where everything is cursed. The dungeons and caves are especially eerie.
Maps and the music. Playing this in the background, came back in the house and i knew we were in a labyrinth. If i could get my NES to work with my tv today i would play this now and again. Edit: okay i guess there's only 2 soundtracks, so
Nostalgia after watching it. I remember plying Zelda with my best friend in 1988-89. We use to spend hour and hours everyday and even in our summer vacations. We use to save the progress made by loading with the registered name. This came Zelda nd Metroid...both were very tough and engaging games. We never reached this far though! ❤️❤️❤️
How did you not beat this game? It boggles me that there are so many that did not beat this game. Even in 1987 when I got this game I beat it after only a month or so and that was with no internet. I had the map that was provided and a magazine I bought with detailed maps. Idk, i never found myself to be all that smart but for some reason, I did very well in this game.
Thank you for reliving my childhood and doing something I never thought possible.... finishing the damn thing... WHO KNEW THERE WERE 9 LEVELS? Holy shit!
@@0megazeero I agree that A Link to the Past is definitely great. I maintain that there are 4 Zelda that are on equal footing, and are equally revolutionary, ground-breaking and game-changing. This brings back so many fond memories that sparked my love for video games. It's so sad that not many games today can keep my attention like this did.
10/10: I'm still proud to have beaten what I think is Nintendo's greatest game. It's a true epic quest overflowing with life and charm, and it rewarded me to no end for exercising a little patience for the first time in my restless youth. Setting the standard for replay value, it really is a LEGEND that STILL RULES!!👍
This game was one of the best experiences in my childhood. I remember feeling like I was on a real adventure with this and the map seemed there was endless secrets to uncover, every tile had a potential to hide a secret. Even after beating the game, I felt there was always more to explore.
I remember being about 4 years old and my grandma would have me on her lap while she played this. That was in 1988. She still to this day gets out the old NES in her closet and plays through legend of Zelda, both quests.
Thank you for this! I've never played the original and this was incredibly helpful. I decided to play this in anticipation for the new Zelda game releasing this week. The 3D Zeldas are some of my all time favorites so I had to pay homage to where it all began.
OMG Finished this today! Couple times found this video very useful, thanks! "Tip of The nose" and "A -key" and some parts in the beginning for example. Really proud of managing to find Levels 7, 8 and 9 without help! Such a great game!
I played this game I was 12 after my mother sacrificed my siblings xmas present to buy me the NES and Zelda. I spent so many hours in those scary dungeons. Playing it now still give me the thrill! And this dude here is so easy...it wasn't that easy for real!
After 30 yrs, I have finally beat ZELDA. Thanks UA-cam. A kid like me growing up also couldn't afford a game genie or a Nintendo Power subscription. 👊🏾🕹🎮
1:08:56 dungeon-6: this room is the location of the staff, you are supposed to move the left tile and a passage will appear underground. but also when you see an old man in a dungeon betting you would like some more bombs for 100 (like in dungeon-5), not only does he give you full stock on bombs, but he also increases the bag space by 4. so it goes from 8 bombs to 12, 12 to 16. otherwise this is the best walkthrough ive seen for this game. thanks you so much, you helped get 100 percent completion because i had no idea the overworld had so many hidden places
I never really played Mario until later in life. I actually got into the old Mario games in college many years later. Had a bunch of people show me the secrets and such. I have played the original SMB through a few times but it has been a while. I often now get tripped up in 8-2 or 8-3. Still really tough levels even by today's standards. I never really played the 2nd zelda. I have it now on the NES classic but never really tried it. Having NES and SNES in my room in college was a good choice...everyone wanted to come over and play.
As a pre teen in the late 80's, I played a lot of video games. I mostly played sports games (especially Tecmo Bowl), but my all time favorite game to this day is the original Legend Of Zelda! Such a brilliant classic game! My 10 year old nephew was over the other day so I dusted off the old Nintendo and we played. Thanks to this video I was able to beat this game in July 2022 about 30+ years since the last time I did it. THANK YOU!!! Unbelievable how you won the entire game on just one life. It took me 5. Also, in level 8 when you were down to a half a heart and pulled it out. BRAVO!!! I also noticed you did it with just 8 bombs. I bought more bombs twice for a load of 16. You did show me one heart I was never able to find back in the day. So cool, thanks again!
I also played this nearly 35 years ago when I was young, the game theme song is so touching and I still remember this game cartridge is golden so elegant
When I was a kid and playing this game, I always thought that these dungeons were just castles just like what we've experienced in the original Super Mario Bros
Well according to the manual of The Legend of Zelda this aren't dungeons either they're called labyrinths. However your thoughts of castle came true in Zelda 2 the adventure of link in the form of palaces.
I don’t think he gets it. When he’s got full life he still tries to get as close as possible to an enemy to hit it with the sword and doesn’t bother freezing anything with the boomerang.
@@danielmyers76 +1 on this- I'm not saying I'm the best zelda player, but his technique could use a lot of improvement, especially staying away and using his tools. Also in the beginning I start out the same way basically by going right; but it was a waste to go all the way then up to buy bombs from the shop. Simply going up to the bushes and killing Moblins will drop a lot of bombs as was seen in his video. It's a waste to buy bombs
It’s impossible to beat it without a manual. Or without the Nintendo Power Magazine because you wouldn’t know where the secrets are or where to go but, ofc you could always call the Nintendo Power Hotline but it charge you back then idk if it would now.
You had to throw fire on every single bush until you remembered everything. This is so nostalgic in a good way. This and Contra were the best games ever made.
He missed the wand in level 6 and the book that results in the wand discharge ending in a candle flame. Very useful in rooms where you would want to hurl a projectile but your life isn't full so your sword doesn't hurl.
Man this brought back memories from the 80's!!!! Wondering why you didn't use the boomerang more though. It's very helpful in some of those levels, especially with bats and the like. Thanks for the throwback!
Now that video is amazing! The way the player takes time first to win heart containers, usefull items like ring, hidden money, etc...and then go to the castles....that's a game changer! I used to go to castle 1, die, castle 2, die again, castle 3, sword, castle 4 etc...i tried this new way and its so easy now!
Don’t know if this was already mentioned but on Level 8 and another one I forget, you can kill the pink looking bunny rabbit heads that bounce around with and “arrow” it kills them instantly instead of risking getting hit trying to kill them with your sword!! Great walkthrough tho, thanks for sharing 😊
When I have kids I wonder how I could make them value games like I did when I was young. I still remember the emotions I felt when I bought a new game and inserted it in my console or waited for it to be installed on the PC. Aww, I miss those times.
My dad used this step by step to play through Zelda and made me instruct him on what you were doing and it made me so sleepy having to pause it so many times but we appreciate you posting this even though I have to risk my energy but I still get the hilarious sighting of my dad’s sarcasm 😂
I can't remember how I figured out the lost woods part as a kid.... I remember using the booklet for help and writing on the map as I found out secrets.
You likely encountered an old lady in a cave in the very bottom left corner of the game who told you, "Go north, west, south, west to the Forest of Maze," after greeting you with "Pay me and I'll talk."
It's so clever how the first screen starts you without the sword. It's simple to get it but the game is telling you from the first moment that finding items is important.
I wasn’t going to bother with this one but watching the first minute of this, it looks pretty good. Zelda 1 and 2 and Twilight Princess are the only ones I haven’t played through yet. I think I’ll buy the download for my 3ds instead of emulation.

As a pre teen in the late 80's, I played a lot of video games. I mostly played sports games (especially Tecmo Bowl), but my all time favorite game to this day is the original Legend Of Zelda!

I played this when I was 20 in 2004, after ocarina of time and after a link to the past. It's an amazing game.
The 1980's was my childhood, and I wouldn't trade it for ANY other decade to be a child! Thank you for posting this!
I was lucky to be born during the 80's. I too would not trade it. I even wish there was a way to go back to the 80's. Maybe in the afterlife.
Surprised you didn’t use your boomerang or flame 🔥 on the level missions. That’s handling it like a boss! Brings back a lot of memories!
It's so clever how the first screen starts you without the sword. It's simple to get it but the game is telling you from the first moment that finding items is important.
2020 who's playing these classic

Just ordered it for my new NES
I am i downloaded it on my PC for my nes emulator n jeez is it fun but very hard at the same time
I wasn’t going to bother with this one but watching the first minute of this, it looks pretty good. Zelda 1 and 2 and Twilight Princess are the only ones I haven’t played through yet. I think I’ll buy the download for my 3ds instead of emulation.
This was exactly what I needed, 2 hours 17 minutes 2 seconds ago. Thanks :)
I got the NES for Christmas in 85. Zelda is still hands down my favorite game of all time
All we had back in the day was nintendo power magazines and word of mouth on the playground😊
