I work at a derm clinic, and we do so many full skin exams!! The reality is that we don't remove a "lot" of moles. The most likely scenario is that your dermatologist will use a lumio light (large bright magnifying glass) or dermatoscope (google them- they are seriously cool tools!) to look really closely at the pigmentation pattern and vascularity (blood supply) of spots on your skin. You'd be surprised- often some spots we (personally) think are "bad" are totally fine, and the spots you don't even think about may be problematic. If you have SEVERAL slightly weird-looking nevi, they will probably mark them on a chart and take pictures of them. They then will advise you to return in about 3 months to recheck those sites you are watching. If they don't change within the three months, they will probably just be sites they look at each year when you come in for your full skin exam.
Something we tell our patients to look for is the "ugly duckling." Even if you make really dark moles or freckle easily (these can be "moles," which are nevi, or lentigines, which are sun-related changes), if you have several that all kind of look the same (same depth, same pigmented pattern), they are probably okay to keep.
Remember that your health care is entirely yours. Your dermatologist will usually give three options for any moles they find look atypical: 1) watch the site (take pictures and recheck to look for change), 2) take a SHAVE BIOPSY (this is like a deep scrape and have minimal risk of scarring, or 3) take a PUNCH BIOPSY, which they may call "punch excision." The punches WILL leave scarring- you might have seen videos of this done, but they take a little cookie cutter of your skin to hopefully get a small margin on that site so if it DOES come back as atypical when they send it to pathology, the margins are clear and you do not need additional surgery. If your derm is NOT comfortable with any of those options, they will let you know.
Atypical moles have the POTENTIAL to progress into melanoma (the big scary skin cancer), which is why we remove them. However, if you have many of them, removal of all of them is not only a huge medical burden, it's a huge financial burden on YOU and it takes time away from other patients who may have more pressing needs (just being honest here). You can always opt to remove any mole, regardless of if it's atypical or totally fine, but what I'm getting at here is usually the best thing to do there is just to watch them.
At your age, I would be SURPRISED if your derm pulls out the liquid nitrogen. We use liquid nitrogen to destroy the damaged cells in actinic keratoses- these are "precancers" because about 10% of those spots turn into a cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma. You will probably have some level of actinic damage and sun damage (who doesn't??), but if you already have spots they want to freeze, take that pretty seriously. There is NO CURE for actinic keratoses, but freezing (cryotherapy) can manage them. They can look pretty rough after freezing.... but it's way better than the topical treatment. We have seen patients in their mid 20s have skin cancers, including squamous cell and basal cell, so this is so important and I love that you are getting preventative exams!!!
PS- don't wear any nail polish. Your derm will look at your nails and nail beds. If you have polish on, we work around it, but if you want a complete and total check, get your pedicure AFTER your appointment. And please don't wear any fragrance!! Derms see a LOT of contact allergies, and many of our patients are allergic to fragrance. This goes for heavily scented body lotion as well. Even if you smell "good," (the fragrance isn't overpowering or whatever else), it can still be enough to trigger somebody's allergies.

This was so helpful, thank you! I'm on medication that raises my risk for skin cancer so I'm going to visit the derm for the first time to get checked out and you completely calmed my nerves about it. Have a great day!

Yeah everything you said has been my experience. I got diagnosed with melanoma when I was 30 and my Dr made a chart of moles she was slightly concerned about to reference when I come in each year. Often I don't have to have anything removed. But I have had 2 others since the melanoma that I was concerned about and had them remove because they worried ME. and they totally respect that because they know I check myself regularly to look for any changes. 1 of them did come back severely dysplastic and they treated it like it was melanoma so I had to go see a general surgeon again to have a larger area around it removed. The margins were clear of abnormal cells so that was good. But I don't mind going at all. I feel like there's hardly any pain when they remove a mole. Not a big deal.

I do microblading!! My biggest advise is really ask questions of your technician. Ask about their process, their products, ask to see their work, and about colour theory and how colour heals on different undertones of skin. The more you discuss during consultation the better! Any technician who can't/isn't interested in discussing these questions is not worth seeing in my opinion. Definitely shop around and see who's style and approach suits you best. Also definitely ask about accreditation/education and insurance because those are things that are often left out of the discussion out of trust but it is so important to be sure you're going to someone reputable. ✨❤️

I have always had lots of moles/ freckles and never really thought about skin cancer. I've never sun tanned much and took care of my skin. At 35, I had a mole that turned black and had it removed, it turned out to be malignant melanoma. It was so scary and changed my life forever. But honestly, it was all ok. My point to this message.... is that good for you😊for being proactive in your skin care and getting checked out. Your message is a positive one, that its ok to checked before something is wrong. I am grateful for my dermatologist and he has taught me so much knowledge of what to watch for. I went from being terrified that I will get melanoma again, to being in control of my health. If i catch it early again, all will be ok. Sorry for long message but I am moved that you've shared this and wanted to share. All the best in your dermatologist visit. 💖

I've had a few moles removed - you don't need to be nervous about the procedure. My incisions also healed flat, a little discoloured (lighter than my skin tone) but they weren't indented or pockmarked. It's 100% worth doing particularly if you are skin cancer prone or have a history of skin cancer in your family. Good luck, you will be fine!

I recently got my brows microbladed and I LOVE them. I did a ton of research on local places that did it, so I was confident in my decision on where to go. Call and ask questions so you are more comfortable and know more about the process before you go in and commit! This made me feel less nervous than I probably would have not doing it, but of course I was still a little nervous going in. Make sure you communicate to the artist what you want and make sure you are 100% good with the drawn on shape. The process was pretty painless, but my eyebrows did feel a little bit sore the first day. They will look a little crazy at first, but give them time to heal and follow the aftercare instructions VERY carefully. After the touchup that happens a few weeks after the first session heals (which is usually included in price for most places), you will wake up with beautiful done brows everyday! They look super natural and I rarely wear makeup anymore and feel so much better going out without any on. Only "negative" for me personally is that if I wear a full face of makeup, I still have to fill in my brows the slightest amount or use a gel.

I’ve had my brows micro-bladed. I have a hormonal disorder that makes my eyebrows not grow. I was worried, but the lady that did mine was amazing. She was super careful to check with me at every step to make sure I liked them and explained everything. I just went in for my yearly skin check. I’m fair like you, and I have lots of moles, so I’ve been going yearly since turning 40. (four years now) I thought I was good, since last years check was fine, but my dermatologist found a small spot on my nose. She said it could be basal cell carcinoma, so she biopsied it. Thankfully, it came back benign. I’ve been wearing a dedicated spf 50 daily for over 8 years, but apparently it wasn’t enough. I’ve refocused on sun care, and am making an effort to keep my family covered in sunscreen too. My girls are 9, and 11-years-olds, and I slather them daily. My husband is the worst, he forgets to apply it before leaving the house in the morning, so I apply things when he comes home for lunch. It’s an important part of our healthcare, and I’m trying to get better about reapplying throughout the day. Over makeup is the hardest, but I’m finding some options that work. Glad you’re going to see the dermatologist. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Lots of love!

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend talking to your hair stylist about tinting your brows. I feel the exact same way as you regarding microblading, and I'm just too scared to do it. After getting my brows tinted I will never go back. Not only does it darken your hairs (obviously) but it makes all these tiny hairs stand out that I never knew I had - it's truly amazing!!!! The first day looks crazy, but then it's beautiful and it only lasts about a month, just in case you don't like it.

I am someone who is covered in freckles and moles! We also have a huge history of skin cancer / dangerous moles in our family so I always try to push people to go to the dermatologist. My Dr told me that raised moles, though ugly, cannot become cancerous so make sure to have them check out all of your flat moles/freckles. Also make sure they CHECK you girl, it can be super uncomfortable but my (female) Dr checks in between my toes, all over my scalp, around my breasts, etc. Shes found some bad looking ones that way and I'm so grateful. I go all the time and still get nervous so I totally understand. Also depending on how your insurance works you can usually get 2 zapped per visit paid for by insurance for "health reasons." Good luck! (:

I did microblading and I loved it! My brows have been fair and thin my entire life and it was a really good decision. The good thing about it is that because they don’t go in deep to your skin, they do it in two sessions to get the ink to stick. This means if you go the first time and don’t like the shape or color they do, if you don’t go back for your second session, it’ll fade very quickly. My brows didn’t look complete until I went back for my second session!

Not to mention that at least at the place I went to, they double and triple checked my shape and color before they got the needle anywhere near my face. They asked me to come in with my brows filled in like I like them and went off of that. And even then at my second appointment they adjusted the color a bit because I said I would prefer them a little warmer (I’m a red head) and darker. It was a really good experience for me.

Don’t be nervous about having your skin checked. I’ve had 2 moles removed, it doesn’t hurt and the scars are smaller than the mole. It’s really important to do!

For your face, dermatologists say to use half a teaspoon of the spf you’re using. Use another half for your neck. I know it sounds like a lot but layering the spf you’re using really helps! Putting one layer and gently rubbing it in until you feel it’s mostly absorbed then adding another makes it super easy to do :D don’t forget protecting your body as well!

Cold pressed Castor oil is great for growing hair in brows or lashes.. works amazingly well and is cost effective. Just brush on a light layer with a clean mascara wand before bed. It is the only thing I use and swear by. Works really well as a deep conditioning treatment for your hair as well when mixed with either almond or coconut oil for your hair! Love your videos Jessica.. been subscribed since your first video. Love how genuine and real you are. Lots of love from India!😘❤️❤️

Thank you so much for this- I was sitting here realizing how 'samey' reviews have become when so many people are using PR or, esp the smaller creators I mostly watch, buying products to review because there is a 'demand' to review whatever is the latest newness. This kind of format is a great way to actually discover a wide assortment of new and older products curated by the individual.

These are my favorite videos of yours. I love feeling like I'm just chatting with a friend about makeup. Also, good for you for seeing the dermatologist. I had a suspicious mole removed from my left shoulder when I was around 13. Luckily it was benign. The importance of sunscreen was really never taught to me as a kid, because it just wasn't a big deal when my parents were growing up. I'm 27 now and I'm trying to take better care of my skin. Also, talking about your reproductive health is never TMI. We have some very specific health issues that should be discussed openly. Talking about it casually may inspire some of your viewers to make an appointment for themselves and make sure everything is on the up-and-up. I have endometriosis, PCOS, and my uterus is bicornuate (double), and shaped like a Y. I'm willing to bet a percentage of your viewers have the same issues. It's okay to talk about it. Love you, Jess!

Yay for The Dunes! I live up here:) Buuut, MICROBLADING changed my life!♥️ They numb you. Then numb you again! Then measure it all out, allowing for the differences in each brow, drawing a stencil.
I went w them filled in to show her how I like them. I left looking the same, but better. Then a touch up a month later.
Healing was really super easy for me &, having multiple autoimmune diseases I do NOT heal well or quickly, but this was nothing!
    The color was perfection.
It's been just over 2 yrs now w/o a touch up. The color Has turned a little warm if ur really looking & I'll get them retouched soon, but a lot of days I don't even bother to fill them in, even to make the colors match. I just don't feel I need to.
And, oh man, my brows were AWFUL before. Ppl don't understand... I went to hs & Purdue from '93-'01 so yeah, the tweezing was real af back then. Half of my left eyebrow just refused to grow back!
I've wasted soooo much time on eyebrows. Worrying about them. Filing them in. Retouching. Ughhhhh.. Even way before they were a thing to do, I did them. I had no choice lol
But yeah, it was honestly the best $$ I've EVER spent, not counting adoption fees for cats 😉 (and I have a 14yo daughter, so that's saying A LOT for microblading 😂😂)
I WILL say that apparently my skin holds the pigment really well so that's prob why I've been able to go this long & why I've had such great results, but again, that surprises me bc after my diagnosis, my body stopped retaining tattoo ink. My fewest one actually looks worse than my oldest. It's odd.
But microblading uses a pigment & doesn't penetrate as many layers of skin as a tattoo does, which uses permanent ink. So I guess you can't really compare them. Totally dif procedures.
THE POINT OF ALL THIS lol is that I'm someone who could have so easily rejected the pigment & had an awful time healing, but it was a breeze! At wonderful!
I'd go for it if I were you! 😊😊 You'll prob regret not having done it sooner!
    -Amy Catherine

I has microblading done last year. Loved it!! I'm just bummed that it's semi-permanent so it's mostly gone already (it fades even faster if you use any kind of actives for skin turnover). I also have a massive fear of red tones (I had hot roots once when I got my hair colored and I will never recover from that horror!) so I did freak out A LOT the next day when it looked like the color was very red. But the artist assured me we chose the right color tone and shade, and all I was seeing was the post procedure inflamed skin. She was right, of course. Within 2 more days the redness had gone and all I was left with were full, rich, perfectly medium brown brows. I miss them!!! So, as long as you get a well vetted artist, you should be fine. And they should show you the final color mix on your skin (mine was swatched on my forehead) so I could see what the end result would be. (Yes, I should have trusted that color swatch, LOL!).

if you go with your brows done to a microblading place, they'll see how you draw and fill in your preferred shape/color yourself, and they can really see what you're asking for and after remove your makeup. Plus, they'll redraw the shape as many times as you want as a stencil until it's perfect before starting the microblading!

I’ve considered microblading but I’m also unsure. I’ve use so many brow serums and nothing. I’m a teen from the 90’s and went to beauty school so I’m a victim of over plucking and waxing. But!! I started using the neulash serum and holy cow! I’m growing new eyebrows and they are finally getting thicker. I’m blown away. If this didn’t work I was going to give up. It’s expensive. $85. But if you buy on dermstore and save as a favorite you can get 10% off and use ebates and dermstore is usually 4% cash back. Now it’s 15% off when Macy’s has friends and fam and that just ended. I think it also goes on sale in Nordstrom’s up coming huge annual sale. I’m so bloody excited about how much growth I’ve had. I’ve tried grande brow, babe lash and another random brand. Never anything. I’ve been using 4-6 weeks now. Hoping it keeps giving me thicker brows but so far I’m thrilled with what I’ve got. I keep looking at them throughout the day. They look so good. FINALLY! (Oh and dermstore is always free shipping)

Really like your get ready with me Jessica, I agree with you on the RMS concelear I have it and I find you have to build it up quite a bit and I find when I wear my makeup doesn't last as well or have as nice a finish. The bronzer as eyeshadow looks really nice as well :) :) My holy grail RMS product is the RMS lip to cheek in diabolique as I found it to be the perfect burgandy red colour as its not to bright which is nice and it has the darker hue. When you do new product GRM's it would be great to see check in's every now and then so we can see how it works. Lovely video :) :)

I love when you're just chatty. 💛 I'm definitely interested in what the dermatologist says as well as whatever you're willing to share when you get checked out by the OBGYN. I've been watching several videos lately about menstrual cups and such. I find personal topics like that so refreshing to discuss openly. But I love the new direction your channel is heading. It just feels like we're all maturing together. 👍

You cracked me up but I understand fully about your "glowy Hawaii night out" look reference! Your overall look was incredible. I'll have to try the RMS bronzer. I've always used powder bronzer but being a "mature" woman I've been getting into facial oils, BB and CC creams versus full coverage foundations, and highlighting stick from ELF. I use L'oreal micro brow pencil in Dark Blonde. I've tried your recommendations for brow pencils and L'oreal works the best for me. Lash Paradise clumps too much for me so I bought the Wet n' Wild skinny mascara which looks great on my upper and lower lashes. It smells really good too. Thank you for another excellent video. I like your honesty; in a world of so many Beauty & Skin Care UA-camrs I really find you're the most genuine. ☆☆☆☆

I’m so glad you’re going to the dermatologist! Last year I went for a skin check-hadn’t been in years. He removed a few moles that looked sketchy to him and one ended up being melanoma. Luckily it was stage one but I still had to have a chunk of tissue removed. So now I’m a big advocate of getting regular skin checks, and I use sunscreen more religiously. Preventative care is important because you can find things early.

My microblading experience was amazing. I actually was in the same boat as you and was so scared they would screw it up. I researched for 10 months and who i wanted to do mine. I kept looking at work they done and then finally made my choice. Im glad i did it. The girl who did mine chose a few different colours for my brows and asked me what colour i liked best. It was the best decision i ever made.
